Abstract:With the development of soccer robots, application of embedded real-time operating system (RTOS) in the control system of robots is attracting more and more considerable attention for meeting the increased requirements of complexity and real time. A control system of intelligent robocup was developed, which was based on the embedded RTOS of MicroC/OS-II and the digital signal processing (DSP) chip of TMS320F2407. It adopted the control algorithm of PPLID available in the literature. This control system is superior in computation, control and real-time performance.

Abstract:The Zhejiang University Micro-Aerial Robotics Team (ZMART) has prepared to participate the 2012 International Aerial Robotics Competition (IARC). Our team aims to demonstrate autonomous exploring and operation in an unknown indoor environment. The basic system architecture consists of a quadrotor helicopter platform, control units, different kinds of sensors, communication modules and a base station. The hardware structure, as well as the algorithm structure, will be introduced in this report.

Abstract:In order to launch a soccer game between human and robots, one of the crucial problems for robots is to effectively identify human and their actions. In this paper, based on human skeleton tracking information from Kinect, GR (Gesture Recognition), FVGR (Front View Gait Recognition) and NNVGR (Non-Normative View Gait Recognition) are carried out to develop the HRI (Human Robot Interaction) systems for a middle size league soccer robot. This method is used to identify the human body language and obtain information of body movements, so that the HRI system can generate different command to control the movements of the middle size league soccer robot. The performances of the proposed HRI systems are verified by different experiments. The experimental results show that this method can quickly and safely identify human and their movements. This research can provide a practical solution for Mid-Sized League competition between human and robots in the future.

Abstract:Humans have a remarkable ability to learn continuously from the external environment and inner experience. One of the grand goals of robots is to build an artificial lifelong learning agent that can shape a cultivated understanding of the world from the current scene and previous knowledge via an autonomous lifelong development. It is challenging for the robot learning process to retain earlier knowledge when robots encounter new tasks or information. Recent advances in computer vision and deep-learning methods have been impressive due to large-scale data sets, such as ImageNet [1] and COCO [2]. However, robotic vision poses unique new challenges for applying visual algorithms developed from these computer vision data sets because they implicitly assume a fixed set of categories and time-invariant task distributions [3].

Abstract:This chapter describes the preparation and implementation of the Robotic Grasping and Manipulation Competition @IROS 2016. Our Tsinghua Team participated in both the hand-in-hand and fully-autonomous tracks. The structure of a novel designed gripper and an algorithm for object detection and grasp pose estimation are described. The competition results demonstrates the effectiveness of the strategies used in the competition.

Abstract:The platform software system was revised for the FIRA Mirosot 5 vs 5 match in order to optimize the environment for the competition of 5 vs 5 on the original 3 vs 3 platform.The Function of visual identification and control output are strengthened in this revision.The video reading and identification functions are also added in with the new software system for the convenience of debugging on the computer without correlative hardware.The newly developed real-time simulation function helps to reduce the time/memory consumption on video display.The revised software will successfully and effectively collaborate on the operation of the hardware in real-time competition.

Abstract:Shared benchmark problems have historically been a fundamental driver of progress for scientific communities. In the context of academic conferences, competitions offer the opportunity to researchers with different origins, backgrounds, and levels of seniority to quantitatively compare their ideas. In robotics, a hot and challenging topic is sim2real-porting approaches that work well in simulation to real robot hardware. In our case, creating a hybrid competition with both simulation and real robot components was also dictated by the uncertainties around travel and logistics in the post-COVID-19 world. Hence, this article motivates and describes an aerial sim2real robot competition that ran during the 2022 IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems, from the specification of the competition task, to the details of the software infrastructure supporting simulation and real-life experiments, to the approaches of the top-placed teams and the lessons learned by participants and organizers.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a cloud-based benchmark for robotic grasping and manipulation, called the OCRTOC benchmark. The benchmark focuses on the object rearrangement problem, specifically table organization tasks. We provide a set of identical real robot setups and facilitate remote experiments of standardized table organization scenarios in varying difficulties. In this workflow, users upload their solutions to our remote server and their code is executed on the real robot setups and scored automatically. After each execution, the OCRTOC team resets the experimental setup manually. We also provide a simulation environment that researchers can use to develop and test their solutions. With the OCRTOC benchmark, we aim to lower the barrier of conducting reproducible research on robotic grasping and manipulation and accelerate progress in this field. Executing standardized scenarios on identical real robot setups allows us to quantify algorithm performances and achieve fair comparisons. Using this benchmark we held a competition in the 2020 International Conference on Intelligence Robots and Systems (IROS 2020). In total, 59 teams took part in this competition worldwide. We present the results and our observations of the 2020 competition, and discuss our adjustments and improvements for the upcoming OCRTOC 2021 competition. Abstract:In this work we present a platform to assess robot platform skills using an internet-of-things (IoT) task board device to aggregate performances across remote sites. We demonstrate a concept for a modular, scale-able device and web dashboard enabling remote competitions as an alternative to in-person robot competitions. We share data from nine robot platforms located across four continents in three manipulation task categories of object localization, object insertion, and component disassembly through an organized international robot competition - the Robothon Grand Challenge. This paper discusses the design of an electronic task board, the strategies implemented by the top-performing teams and compares their results with a benchmark solution to the presented task board. Through this platform, we demonstrate fully remote, online competitions can generate innovative robotic solutions and tested a tool for measuring remote performances. Using the open-sourced task board code and design files, the reader can reproduce the benchmark solution or configure the platform for their own use case and share their results transparently without transporting their robot platform.

Abstract:A novel system Of automatic competition analysis based on global vision for practical robot soccer games is proposed in this paper to tentatively overcome gaps between simulation competitions and practical ones. Firstly, to improve performance of vision systems and to acquire more reliable competition data, several ideas including color space transformation, sensitivity object processing, local searching combined with global tracking are presented. Secondly, four trajectory restrictions of moving objects are introduced for acquiring more reasonable competition data. Finally, a competition analysis system to support technique statistics, data analysis and interested scenes retrieval is proposed and implemented. Experiments show that the system is compact and effective for quantitative analysis of practical robot soccer competitions.

Abstract:This paper presents a robot design competition called ‘IDC Robocon’ as an effective tool for engineering education. The International Design Contest (IDC) Robocon competition has several benefits in creating a meaningful design experience for undergraduate engineering students and includes an international flavour as participants of the competition hail from all around the world. The problem posed to the contestants is to design, build and test mobile robots that are capable of accomplishing a task. A primary goal of the competition is to provide undergraduates with a meaningful design experience with an emphasis on mechanical design, electronic circuits and programming. It is hoped that by placing the emphasis on the design, the course will encourage more undergraduates to go into the field of engineering design. This paper presents the latest 2015 IDC Robocon (the 26th edition) in detail and discusses course of events and results in terms of the educational experience. In this competition, a simulated space problem of cleaning the debris from orbit is proposed for the latest IDC Robocon competition. Teams, comprising of students from multiple countries work together to develop robotic systems to compete with each other in collecting the foam balls and delivering them to the rotating the holder.
Preserving HRI Capabilities: Physical, Remote and Simulated Modalities in the SciRoc 2021 Competition

Abstract:In the last years, robots are moving out of research laboratories to enter everyday life. Competitions aiming at benchmarking the capabilities of a robot in everyday scenarios are useful to make a step forward in this path. In fact, they foster the development of robust architectures capable of solving issues that might occur during human-robot coexistence in human-shaped scenarios. One of those competitions is SciRoc that, in its second edition, proposed new benchmarking environments. In particular, Episode 1 of SciRoc 2 proposed three different modalities of participation while preserving the Human-Robot Interaction (HRI), being a fundamental benchmarking functionality. The Coffee Shop environment, used to challenge the participating teams, represented an excellent testbed enabling for the benchmarking of different robotics functionalities, but also an exceptional opportunity for proposing novel solutions to guarantee real human-robot interaction procedures despite the Covid-19 pandemic restrictions. The developed software is publicly released.

Abstract:Autonomous car racing competitions have become widespread across many countries and events, taking inspiration from renowned motorsports like Formula 1 and IndyCar, among others. Similar to how traditional motorsports have fueled advancements in automotive technology, researchers and students are now anticipating similar contributions from autonomous car racing competitions. Betz et al. have provided a comprehensive review of the current landscape of autonomous car racing in [1]. These competitions feature a diverse range of robot cars, varying in scale from 1:10 to full-scale (refer to Table 1 for specifics). The size differences also extend to the sensory and computing systems employed. While many of these events are tailored for educational purposes, targeting students from high school to postgraduate programs, it is noted that smaller-scale hardware systems may not necessarily utilize the same sensory and computing systems as their real-scale counterparts. This, however, does not imply that the technical challenges in algorithm and program development are any less demanding than those encountered in full-scale or near full-scale cases. The variations in sensory, computing, and hardware resources due to the size differences may give rise to distinct technical problems not encountered by autonomous cars navigating real-world road environments. Nevertheless, fundamental issues, such as planning, motion control, and real-time recognition with onboard systems are common for both scales.

Abstract:This paper reports a series of simulation competitions on domestic robots. All of these five competitions were based on a simulation platform focused on evaluating high-level functions of a domestic robot, including task planning and dialogue understanding. The object of holding these competitions is to promote research and development of service robots while avoiding limitations imposed by hardware of real robots. We also analyze the results and performances of participating teams since the competition was first held in 2009, showing that more and more terms are participating and they are performing better and better. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.
