Abstract:Glycerol is the main byproduct of industrial biodiesel plants, and new technological routes using it as feedstock have been studied, due to the increase in world biofuel production. One of the possible applications is in the production of acrylic acid, a product with several industrial applications. This study analyzed a new process of converting crude glycerol, through purification for the removal of impurities, followed by oxidative dehydration reaction in a single step and purification until glacial acrylic acid specification standards are met. It was attested that the process is economically viable, with a payback period of 5 years for an NPV/Investment greater or equal to 2 and an IRR greater or equal to 10% per annum, or 4 years in case tax incentives offered for the development of green technologies.

Abstract:Glycerol, derived from biodiesel production, is a renewable feedstock for the production of value-added chemicals. Herein, we report an investigation of the acetalization of glycerol with n-octanal by homogeneous acid catalysis in the absence of a solvent, using p-dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid, p-toluenesulfonic acid, and sulfuric acid, respectively, as catalysts. p-Dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid, a surfactant-type Bronsted acid, proved to be an excellent catalyst capable of efficiently promoting the reaction under solvent-free conditions, and the yields of glycerol acetals reached 99% under the optimal conditions. The distribution of five-and six-membered cyclic acetal regioisomers varied depending on the reaction time and temperature. Moreover, the amphiphilic properties of the products, with different ratios of five-to six-membered cyclic acetals, have been evaluated by surface tension measurements.

Abstract:Acrylic polymer latex plays an important role in many industrial processes, such as the production of synthetic rubber, surface coatings, adhesives, additives in paper and textiles and many other products. Presently, the raw materials for preparing the acrylic polymer latex mainly originate from fossil resources. The progressive decline of fossil resources, together with the ongoing increases in oil prices, has initiated an increase in the search for alternatives, based on renewable resources for the production of acrylic polymer latex. In this paper, the application of renewable resources in preparing acrylic polymer latex is reviewed and summarized. The aim of the review is that provides the reference for application of the renewable resources in preparing the acrylic polymer latex.

Abstract:The conversion of glycerol, the main byproduct of the biodiesel industry, to acrylic acid is one of the most attractive biomass to biochemical processes. It represents millions of tons of market demand. The previous tandem reaction protocol for the conversion of glycerol to acrylic acid via an acrolein intermediate always suffers from fast catalyst deactivation and thus cannot be commercialized. Herein, a novel two-step protocol for the conversion of glycerol to acrylic acid is presented: glycerol deoxydehydration (DODH) by formic acid to allyl alcohol, followed by oxidation to acrylic acid in the gas phase over Mo–V–W–O catalysts. In the second step, supported and unsupported Mo–V–W–O multiple-metal oxide catalysts were used for the transformation of allyl alcohol to acrylic acid and excellent activity as well as selectivity was achieved. Remarkably, the mesoporous silica-supported Mo–V–W–O catalysts showed superb stability on time stream under the optimal reaction conditions with an overall acrylic acid yield of 80%. This study provides a prominent catalytic process for the large scale production of acrylic acid from biorenewable glycerol.

Abstract:Petrochemical based polymers, paints and coatings are cornerstones of modern industry but our future sustainable society demands greener processes and renewable feedstock materials. A challenge is to access platform monomers from biomass resources while integrating the principles of green chemistry in their chemical synthesis. We present a synthesis route starting from biomass-derived furfural towards the commonly used monomers maleic anhydride and acrylic acid, implementing environmentally benign photooxygenation, aerobic oxidation and ethenolysis reactions. Maleic anhydride and acrylic acid, transformed into sodium acrylate, were isolated in yields of 85 % (2 steps) and 81 % (4 steps), respectively. With minimal waste and high atom efficiency, this biobased route provides a viable alternative to access key monomers.

Abstract:In many regions, even if waste vegetable oil is used as raw material, the profits of biodiesel (fatty acid methyl ester, FAME) enterprises still remain restricted, and they are facing environmental problems caused by the by-product glycerol. Hence, value-added utilization of FAME and glycerol is a promising alternative to improve the competitiveness of biodiesel enterprises in the economy and environmental protection. In this paper, FAME and glycerol were utilized to prepare epoxidized acyl glycerides by transesterification and epoxidation. In the transesterification, acyl glycerides were prepared by reacting FAME and glycerol catalyzed by K2CO3. The contents of monoacyl glyceride, diacyl glyceride, and triacyl glyceride in the acyl glycerides were about 50%, 40%, and 10%, and the optimal conditions were a temperature of 200 degrees C and the molar ratio of FAME to glycerol of 1:1. In the epoxidation, selectivity of epoxides was significantly affected by monoacyl glyceride content, and a treatment method was developed to control the monoacyl glyceride content <5%. In addition, the plasticity of epoxidized acyl glycerides to partially substitute dioctyl phthalate in polyvinyl chloride was studied, the overall mechanical properties, thermal stability, and extraction resistance were improved. In this work, FAME and glycerol were utilized to prepare epoxidized acyl glycerides with higher value-added, which provide a potential solution for improving the market competitiveness of biodiesel enterprises.

Abstract:The selective dehydration oxidation of glycerol to acrylic acid is a very attractive approach for glycerol utilization. In this work, we demonstrated an efficient two-bed system for this process. The dehydration catalyst was Cs2.5H0.5PW12O40 supported on Nb2O5 (CsPW-Nb), and the oxidation catalyst was vanadium-molybdenum mixed oxides supported on silicon carbide (VMo-SiC). The experimental results showed that the optimum reaction temperature and oxygen ratio for these two catalysts were very similar. This made the two-bed system simple and efficient. Compared with the single-bed system, the two-bed system with the dehydration catalyst and oxidation catalyst loaded separately was more favorable to avoid the overoxidation reaction of glycerol. A high yield of acrylic acid was achieved at optimized conditions in the two-bed system. The Bronsted acid sites on the dehydration catalysts were the active sites for acrolein formation. The byproducts produced on Lewis acid sites in the dehydration step and the water in the glycerol feed did not show negative effects on the acrolein oxidation reaction. Both the CsPW-Nb and VMo-SiC catalysts were stable for at least 70 h and had very good thermal stability at the coke burning temperature of 500 degrees C.

Abstract:Lignocellulosic biomass is a promising renewable feedstock for the sustainable manufacturing of biofuels and bioproducts. Among emerging bioproducts, 3-hydroxypropionic acid (3-HP) is of particular interest as a platform chemical to produce commercially significant chemicals such as acrylic acid. In this study, BioSTEAM.an open-source platform.was leveraged to design, simulate, and evaluate (via techno-economic analysis, TEA, and life cycle assessment, LCA) biorefineries producing acrylic acid via fermentation of sugars (glucose and xylose) to 3-HP. The biorefinery could produce acrylic acid with a minimum product selling price (MPSP) of $1.72-2.08.kg(-1) (5th-95th percentiles; baseline at $ 1.83.kg(-1)). Advancements in key technological parameters (fermentation yield, titer, and saccharification solids loading) could greatly enhance the biorefinery's performance (MPSP of $1.29-1.52.kg(-1) with similar to 88% probability of market-competitiveness, a global warming potential of 3.00 [2.53-3.38] kg CO2-eq.kg(-1), and a fossil energy consumption of 39.9 [31.6-45.1] MJ.kg(-1)). A quantitative sustainable design framework was used to explore alternative fermentation regimes (neutral/ low-pH fermentation across titer, yield, and productivity combinations) and alternative feedstocks (first/second-generation feedstocks across price and sugar/carbohydrate content). Overall, this research highlights the ability of agile TEA-LCA to screen promising biorefinery designs, navigate sustainability trade-offs, prioritize research needs, and establish a roadmap for the continued development of bioproducts and biofuels.

Abstract:Although glycerol has been a well-known renewable chemical for centuries, its commercial relevance has increased considerably in the last few years because of its rising inevitable formation as a by-product of biodiesel production. The present review gives a broad overview on the chemistry of glycerol starting from the classic esters and oligomers to new products like glycerol carbonate, telomers, branched alkyl ethers, propanediols and epoxides. In particular, the novel possibilities to control the numerous addition, reduction and oxidation reactions via heterogeneous, homogeneous and biocatalysis will be presented. A benchmark will be given to determine the products which will have the best chances of entering the market and which processes are currently most developed.

Abstract:Vanadium phosphorus oxides (VPOs) fabricated by employing poly ethylene glycol (PEG) additive were used as catalysts for efficient conversion of acetic acid (methyl acetate) and formaldehyde to acrylic acid (methyl acrylate). The highest formation rate (19.8 mu mol g(cat)(-1) min(-1)) of desired products (acrylic acid + methyl acrylate) was accomplished over a VPO catalyst comprising mainly vanadyl pyrophosphate ((VO)(2)P2O7) and vanadyl phosphate in 5 form (delta-VOPO4). This catalyst is nearly three times more active than the analogue reported in literature. The VP0 catalyst activated in 1.5% butane-air is superior to that activated in air or nitrogen. Different from the PEG-derived VPO catalysts for n-butane oxidation to maleic anhydride, a better VPO catalyst for the current reaction requires a higher fraction of delta-VOPO4 entity and contains the medium strong acid sites of high density. Through systematic catalyst characterizations and evaluations, an unambiguous correlation between catalyst structure/constitution and performance was established. (C) 2014 Elsevier Inc. Glycerol Ketals as Building Blocks for a New Class of Biobased (Meth)acrylate Polymers

Abstract:Here, we present an approach for developing the next generation of bio(meth)acrylates using glycerol ketals as a platform for property differentiation. Crude glycerol, a biodiesel byproduct, and ketones, derived from biomass valorization, are the building blocks for these polymeric materials. Biobased materials are witnessing a prominent boom in research and commercialization due to increased awareness about the carbon footprint and depletion of petroleum resources. Biodiesel and biopolymers are major linchpins to improve sustainable energy and material needs of the world in the coming years. Glycerol ketal (meth)acrylate monomers synthesized by the reaction of glycerol and various ketones consist of 65–74 wt % bioderived content. Glycerol ketals from different ketones used in our study (acetone, cyclopentanone, and butanone) are the pendant groups on the (meth)acrylate polymer backbone. We studied the effect of various pendant side chain ketal groups on the thermal and rheological properties of these polymers. The methacrylate polymers had a higher glass transition temperature (Tg) (8–40 °C), whereas the acrylate derivatives had a much lower Tg between −11 and 2 °C. Sustainable Production of Acrolein: Investigation of Solid Acid–base Catalysts for Gas-Phase Dehydration of Glycerol

Abstract:Synthesis of acrolein by catalytic gas-phase dehydration of biomass-derivate glycerol was studied over various solid catalysts with a wide range of acid -base properties. The catalyst acidity and basicity were measured, respectively, by n-butylamine and benzoic acid titration methods using Hammett indicators. The most effective acid strength for the selective dehydration of glycerol to form acrolein appeared between -8.2 <= H-0 <= -3.0, with which acrolein was produced at a selectivity of 60-70 mol%. The catalysts having very strong acid sites ( H-0 <= -8.2) effected a lower acrolein selectivity (40-50 mol%) due to more severe coke deposition in the reaction. Solid acids holding medium strong and weak acid sites (-3.0 <= H-0 <= + 6.8) were found to be not selective for the acrolein production, the acrolein selectivity being less than 30 mol%. The mass specific catalytic rate for the acrolein production showed a general trend to increase with the fractional acidity at -8.2 <= H-0 <= -3.0. The catalytic data also suggest that Bronsted acid sites were advantageous over Lewis acid sites in catalyzing the selective synthesis of acrolein from glycerol dehydration. Solid base catalysts were shown not to be effective for acrolein production.

Abstract:Abstract Glycerol, defined simply as a colorless, sweet syrupy liquid extracted from fatty substances through saponification, is an alcohol with three hydroxyl (OH–) groups in its structure. Glycerol has many uses in the consumer market. It is used primarily in personal care products, as an adhesive and sealing agent and many applications. Glycerol, whose name is propane‐1,2,3‐triol, standardized by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), CHO open formula CH 2 OH–CHOH–CH 2 OH. It can be said that glycerol, a by‐product of biodiesel, is produced in very high quantities. Retention of the produced glycerol will lead to cost increases and environmental problems that may directly affect the development of the biodiesel market. Due to the supply of glycerol to the market in large quantities, glycerol prices have hit the bottom, and therefore, the income and profitability of biodiesel production factories from the sale of glycerol have decreased. This situation clearly shows that the excess of glycerol now poses an obstacle to developing the biodiesel market. This article aims to list the valuable chemicals into which glycerol, produced in large quantities as a biodiesel by‐product, can be converted under a single heading and to detail the studies carried out on this subject.

Abstract:Production of value-added chemicals from renewable feedstocks is an attractive platform to alleviate the shortage of petroleum resources and to minimize CO2 emission. Among different renewable feedstocks, glycerol is an organic triol molecule that is produced from plant and animal sources, in which it occurs in the form of triglycerides, a fatty acids ester. This alcohol is produced as the by-product in a large quantity of about 10% (w/w) in biodiesel production. In addition to its applications in food industries, medicinal and personal care products, the utilization of glycerol as a key raw material in organic synthesis has garnered significant attention. As an example, a few technologies for the conversion of glycerol into other essential chemicals such as acrylic acid, 1,2-propanediol, glycerol carbonate, epichlorohydrin, and solketal have been well developed. In recent years glycerol has also been used as the key starting material for the synthesis of amines in laboratories. In general amines are important fine and bulk chemicals used as central precursors and intermediates for advanced chemicals and many life science molecules including pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals. In the last five years, some key advancements have been made using glycerol in the carbon-nitrogen bond-forming processes to prepare different kinds of amines in the presence of suitable catalytic systems. Based on the advantages of glycerol as the feedstock and the importance of amines, we believe it is worthful to write a review summarizing the recent reports on glycerol amination and related reactions. In this regard, this review article discusses the latest developments in catalytic amination reactions using glycerol and its tangible applications in modern organic synthesis. We believe that this review will be interesting and beneficial to the scientists working in the areas of catalytic utilization of glycerol and aminations as well as valorization of renewable feedstocks.

Bio-based 3-hydroxypropionic- and acrylic acid production from biodiesel glycerol via integrated microbial and chemical catalysis

Abstract:Background: 3-Hydroxypropionic acid (3HP) and acrylic acid (AA) are industrially important platform- and secondary chemical, respectively. Their production from renewable resources by environment-friendly processes is desirable. In the present study, both chemicals were almost quantitatively produced from biodiesel-derived glycerol by an integrated process involving microbial and chemical catalysis. Results: Glycerol was initially converted in a fed-batch mode of operation to equimolar quantities of 3HP and 1,3-propanediol (1,3PDO) under anaerobic conditions using resting cells of Lactobacillus reuteri as a biocatalyst. The feeding rate of glycerol was controlled at 62.5 mg/g(CDW).h which is half the maximum metabolic flux of glycerol to 3HP and 1,3PDO through the L. reuteri propanediol-utilization (pdu) pathway to prevent accumulation of the inhibitory intermediate, 3-hydroxypronionaldehyde (3HPA). Subsequently, the cell-free supernatant containing the mixture of 3HP and 1,3PDO was subjected to selective oxidation under aerobic conditions using resting cells of Gluconobacter oxydans where 1,3PDO was quantitatively converted to 3HP in a batch system. The optimum conditions for the bioconversion were 10 g/L substrate and 5.2 g/L cell dry weight. Higher substrate concentrations led to enzyme inhibition and incomplete conversion. The resulting solution of 3HP was dehydrated to AA over titanium dioxide (TiO2) at 230 °C with a yield of >95%. Conclusions: The present study represents the first report on an integrated process for production of acrylic acid at high purity and -yield from glycerol through 3HP as intermediate without any purification step. The proposed process could have potential for industrial production of 3HP and AA after further optimization. Valorization of Crude Glycerol into Citric Acid and Malic Acid by Yarrowia Lipolytica

Abstract:Glycerol is a byproduct generated in large amounts during the process of biodiesel production. The present study reports an alternative method of crude glycerol valorization for the production of citric and malic acid by Yarrowia lipolytica. To enhance the conversion efficiency, we comprehensively investigated optimization of the carbon source, nitrogen source, and pH regulation strategy. Under optimal conditions with the initial concentration of crude glycerol at 40 g/L in combination with 0.3 g/L NH4Cl as the nitrogen source and pH at 4.0 using Na2CO3, we finally obtained 81.11 g/L citric acid and 24.90 g/L malic acid using fed-batch fermentation. In addition, acetate was found to enhance organic acid production and regulate carbon flow among organic acids from crude glycerol. The present study provides an alternative approach for valorization of crude glycerol into value-added biochemicals.

Abstract:The production of industrial chemicals with renewable biomass feedstock holds potential to aid the world in pursuing a carbon-neutral society. Trimellitic and trimesic acids are important commodity chemicals in industry that are prepared by the oxidation of petroleum-derived trimethylbenzene. To reduce the dependence on the limited oil source, we develop a potential sustainable alternative towards trimellitic and trimesic acids using biomass-based 2-methyl-2,4-pentandiol (MPD), acrylate and crotonaldehyde as starting materials. The process for trimellitic acid includes dehydration/D-A reaction of MPD and acrylate, flow aromatization over Pd/C catalyst, hydrolysis and catalytic aerobic oxidation (60% overall yield). The challenging regioselectivity issue of D-A reaction is tackled by a matched combination of temperature and deep eutectic solvent ChCl/HCO2H. Crotonaldehyde can also participate in the reaction, followed by Pd/C-catalyzed decarbonylation/dehydrogenation and oxidation to provide trimesic acid in 54% overall yield. Life cycle assessment implies that compared to conventional fossil process, our biomass-based routes present a potential in reducing carbon emissions.

Selective Synthesis of Diglycerol Monoacetals Via Catalyst-Transfer in Biphasic System and Assessment of Their Surfactant Properties

Abstract:Diglycerol obtained from biomass glycerol has been valorized into selective products by acetalization reaction in the presence of ZnCl2. A synthesis method of monoacetals via catalyst-transfer is carried out encompassing two phase-separated reagents, diglycerol with n-octanal. Mechanistic analysis has revealed that the formation of unstable emulsion promotes the reaction, and the selectivity is affected by the catalyst-transfer direction. By measuring the Zn content in the two phases, we demonstrated the transfer direction of ZnCl2 and the monoacetal were opposite, resulting in separation of the catalyst and the substrate. And the formation of diacetal was retarded. The products monoacetals exhibit superior surfactant properties, especially in terms of foam stability and alkali tolerance.

Abstract:This perspective discusses the underexploited potential of renewable glycerol and its derivatives for the preparation of active pharmaceutical ingredients, some of which are on the World Health Organization list of essential medicines. The regulatory challenges faced by industries considering the replacement of petro-based building blocks with renewably sourced ones are described before diving into pharmaceutical ingredients that could potentially incorporate these bio-based atoms. Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) are sorted following their therapeutic potential, including entities treating cardiovascular diseases, musculoskeletal drugs and compounds endowed with anti-infective properties. Finally, polymeric drugs and more eclectic substrates such as dietary supplements, radiosensitizers or chemotherapeutical agents are considered in the last two sub-sections. The broad spectrum of presented substrates relying on glycerol or potentially glycerol-derived reagents in their synthetic pathway emphasizes the potential contribution of bio-based substrates in already developed industrial processes. The presented examples hint towards a future chemical development in which APIs may be constructed with increasing percentages of bio-sourced atoms.

Abstract:Selection of a suitable lipase provides for quantitative hydrolysis of triacylglycerides without unwanted coproducts. Optimization of the reaction in solely water as sole reaction medium allows for cost efficient conversion of plant oils and and recovery of a highly pure glycerol product as precursor for acrylonitrile synthesis as well as free fatty acids. Plant based triacylglycerides are a sustainable feedstock for the chemical, bioenergy, food and cosmetic sector. While fatty acids conversion has been intensively studied, processes for glycerol valorization have been scarce. In contrast to chemical hydrolysis of plant triacylglycerides enzymatic hydrolysis methods provide a cleaner glycerol stream. This study focuses on the selection of a commercial lipase capable of quantitative hydrolysis of rapeseed‐ and high oleic sunflower oils. Enzymatic process using only water as the reaction medium allows simplified recovery of pure glycerol. Among the six commercial lipase preparations tested, Candida rugosa lipase was identified as the most effective biocatalyst. Catalytic behavior in buffer and pure water was equivalent. Glycerol generated using a washed lipase was recovered by just three purification steps. The FTIR spectrum of the recovered glycerol was equivalent to pure glycerol standard. Over the entire recovery process, 82%–88% of the theoretical glycerol yield could be obtained. Purified glycerol was further didehydroxylated to allyl alcohol by a formic acid mediated open distillation process. The enriched allyl alcohol had a quality, which allows to use it for the synthesis of bio‐based acrylonitrile.
