Abstract:The spectral characteristic of materials is the key factor of the photothermal microactuator's performance. The present article introduces the operating principle, and analyzes the relationship between the material spectral characteristic and its expansion. As the photothermal microactuator is an innovative microactuator based on photothermal expansion that absorbs the laser energy and converts it into internal energy to realize the microdrive, the optimal photothermal expansion material with proper absorption spectrum characteristic matching the spectrum of light driving source needs to be found. The reflection and absorption spectra of four types of polymeric material, including PVC, HDPE, LDPE and PET, were obtained by using the single integrating sphere method. The results indicate that the reflection spectrum of the dyed high-density polyethylene (HDPE) is of double-peak structure in visible band, and there is strong absorption within the range of 600-690 nm, which means it would match the light driving source quite well in the broad spectral range. Therefore, HDPE was chosen as the photothermal expansion material. In order to check out the feasibility and performance of the photothermal microactuactor based on HDPE, a prototyping microactuator 1 500 mm in length and 30 mm in thickness was manufactured by using an excimer laser micromachining system. With a laser diode (10 mW/650 nm) as the external power source to activate the microactuator, performance measurement experiments were carried out by using a self-produced video movement measurement system with a CCD-coupled microscope. The experiment results demonstrate that the deflection of the microactuator reaches 18.7 mm at 10 mW of laser power, showing that the characteristics of spectral absorption and light-heat transition are quite well at 650 nm. This novel photothermal microactuator has simple structure, adjustable displacement output, and more mobility, and can be controlled remotely, so it will be quite useful for applications in the fields of micro-optical-electro-mechanical systems (MOEMS).

Abstract:Actuators that can convert environmental stimuli into mechanical work are widely used in intelligent systems, robots, and micromechanics. To produce robust and sensitive actuators of different scales, efforts are devoted to developing effective actuating schemes and functional materials for actuator design. Carbon-based nanomaterials have emerged as preferred candidates for different actuating systems because of their low cost, ease of processing, mechanical strength, and excellent physical/chemical properties. Especially, due to their excellent photothermal activity, which includes both optical absorption and thermal conductivities, carbon-based materials have shown great potential for use in photothermal actuators. Herein, the recent advances in photothermal actuators based on various carbon allotropes, including graphite, carbon nanotubes, amorphous carbon, graphene and its derivatives, are reviewed. Different photothermal actuating schemes, including photothermal effect-induced expansion, desorption, phase change, surface tension gradient creation, and actuation under magnetic levitation, are summarized, and the light-to-heat and heat-to-work conversion mechanisms are discussed. Carbon-based photothermal actuators that feature high light-to-work conversion efficiency, mechanical robustness, and noncontact manipulation hold great promise for future autonomous systems.
Analysis and experimentation of novel asymmetric photo-thermal micro-actuator

Abstract:In this article, an innovative micro-actuator based on photo-thermal heating is introduced. The basic ideas are to apply a new way to get large actuation power from laser source. When a beam of laser irradiates a thin sheet, the sheet temperature increases and volume expands. Besides irradiation laser power, convection coefficient and the parameters of sheet material, the length-width ratio of sheet also influences the heating process. Applying this characteristic, an asymmetric photo-thermal actuator was manufactured by the excimer laser micromaching system. Steady-state thermal analysis is presented. Feasibility experiments with a laser diode (655 nm) as the power source were carried out, and the data of deflection have been measured under different laser power. The experiment results prove the availability of these novel photo-thermal micro-actuators, and demonstrate that the deflection can be 11.8 μm at 10 mW laser power. This mirco-actuator doesn't need of the old power supply modes of external electric wire or small battery, and can be operated in non-focused uniform irradiation, so it has more mobility and can be controlled remotely. Furthermore, this actuator can be applied in many special environments. © 2008 SPIE.
Theoretical Modelling and Experimental Study of Novel Photothermal Microactuators

Abstract:We present a category of novel photothermal (PT) microactuators. Each microactuator consists of two PT arms that are jointed at the free end and connected to an anchor at the fixed end. When a laser beam irradiates one of the arms (called hot arm, and the other is cold arm), light energy is absorbed and converted into heat. The asymmetric thermal expansion of the hot and cold arms results in lateral deflection. Based on conduction heat transfer theory and heat dissipation mechanism, we study the PT effects and establish the theoretical model of PT expansion for the microactuators. The temperature distribution and the linear thermal expansion can be numerically calculated. The analytical solution provides an insight into the operation of the actuators and predicts the performance of the actuators with new designs. A symmetry microactuator and a microswitch as the prototypes have been fabricated and tested. The experimental results are in good agreement with the theoretical predictions and prove the feasibility of the novel PT microactuators.
The Effect of Infrared Laser-Induced Micro/Nano Photothermal Expansion and the Novel Method of Photothermal Actuation

Abstract:This paper presents a novel asymmetric microactuator based on photo-thermal expansion. It has an asymmetric structure consisting of two thin expansion arms with different widths. When a beam of infrared laser irradiates the arms，the different increases in temperature and photo-thermal expansion controlled by the different rates of specific surface area causes a magnified lateral deflection. In the paper，the thermodynamic model is introduced，and the computing formula of lateral deflection is given. A prototype microactuator of 750μm length has been manufactured by using the excimer laser micromaching system Optec Promaster with an infrared laser diode (998nm) as the external power source to activate the microactuator. Then we carried out feasibility experiments by using a monitored control system made by our laboratory，and measured the relationship between the lateral deflection and laser power. The experiment results demonstrate that the deflection of the microactuator reached 258μm at 16mW infrared laser power. The photo-thermal microactuator has the advantages of simple structure，adjustable deflection，no electromagnetic interference，easy integrating and remote controlling. It will be quite useful for applications in the fields of micro/nano-technology and micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS).

Abstract:For various applications, it is challenging but essential to obtain complex tunable mechanical actuations in response to environmental stimuli. Here, a general and effective strategy is developed to produce multiple types of photo-mechanical actuation (from phototropic/apheliotropic bending to three-dimensional helical buckling) by manipulating the orientation of one-dimensional nanomaterials. These materials are manipulated to mimic plants that generate diverse mechanical motions through the orientation of cellulose fibrils. The photomechanical actuations can be completed in milliseconds and can be performed reversibly without detectable fatigue after 100 000 cycles. This capacity to produce multiple types of photomechanical actuation is further developed to produce complex integrated movements, as demonstrated by a light-manipulated robotic arm and a solar energy harvesting system.

Abstract:Recent advancements in small-scale soft actuators have showcased their ability to respond to various stimuli, making them ideal for biomedical engineering and robotics. Light-responsive actuators constructed from photothermal materials such as carbon-based materials have received great attention for their remote wireless control ability. However, conventional carbon-based actuators typically exhibit uniform responses to different light wavelengths, limiting the complexity of their control. To address this limitation, this study develops light-driven soft actuators utilizing gold nanorods (Au NRs) to enhance selective photo-responsiveness. Au NRs are incorporated given their superior ability to convert light energy into localized heat through localized surface plasmon resonances, with efficiency varying based on their size and the wavelength of incident light. By adjusting the specifications of the Au NRs and the wavelength of the optical field, tunable actuation efficiency can be achieved. Experimental calibration confirms that the actuator exhibits differential performance across various wavelengths, enabling more precise control over its behavior. Demonstrations of application devices highlight the actuator's versatility in flexible robotics, showcasing its potential for advanced applications. This innovation represents a considerable step towards achieving more adaptable and functional soft robotic systems, paving the way for future developments in this area.

Abstract:In this paper, a new type of thermal actuator based on photo-thermal expansion is introduced. The basic idea is using a high power laser beam to heat one arm of the actuator. Different temperatures of the two arms will lead to different thermal expansions, which result in lateral deflection at the connection free end. We first give a theoretical model and use experiment data to prove its validity. Applying the presented model we investigate the influence of the facular position and area on the lateral deflection. Photo-thermal actuators are in millimeter-scale size and easy to fabricate, and they can output micro-scale displacement. They use laser beam to transfer power avoiding the presence of electric current, so they can be applied in many special fields.
Study of New Photothermal Microactuator Based on Micro/nano Scale Photothermal Expansion

Abstract:A microactuator with 1 000 μm length was manufactured by an excimer laser micromaching system using single layer material.A laser diode(650 nm) was employed as the external power source to activate the microactuator.Experiments have been carried out to check the feasibility of deflection.The results show that the actuator can practically generate an obvious lateral deflection without considering the size and the location of the irradiated light spot strictly.The deflection status of the microactuator could be controlled remotely from 0 μm to 14.33 μm by changing the laser power from 0 mW to 10 mW.This proposed photothermal microactuator is quite simple and convenient for operation,which could be miniaturized and utilized in micro-electro-mechanical systems(MEMS) wirelessly with large displacement/actuation force and remote controlling.

Abstract:Ti 3 C 2 T x (a typical MXene) has been widely used in light-driven actuators due to its outstanding photothermal conversion capability. However, the response speed of these actuators is always slow because the effective irradiated area is limited to their surface. Herein, we propose a wood-based composite material which is made by coating Ti 3 C 2 T x on delignified wood (DW). The high porosity of DW leads to high loading of Ti 3 C 2 T x and provides large irradiated areas, thus enhancing photothermal conversion efficiency. The delignification on wood can expose cellulose with highly hydrophilic surface for rapid diffusion of Ti 3 C 2 T x suspension, and the hydroxy in cellulose can act as binding sites to form stable combination with Ti 3 C 2 T x . Taking advantage of the good compressibility of DW, a simple densification is conducted on TDW (Ti 3 C 2 T x /DW) to greatly shorten the distance between adjacent oxygen-enriched Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets, enhancing the conjugation among nanosheets, thus endowing TDW with good flexibility and high heat transfer efficiency. Moreover, we manufacture a light-driven bilayer actuator comprised of TDW as the passive layer and low-density polyethylene (LDPE) as the active layer. Our light-driven actuator exhibits a tremendous angle variation of 160° at a light intensity of 120 mW/cm 2 . A series of devices based on the TDW/LDPE actuator are demonstrated, including simulated gestures, a four-finger soft gripper, and a bionic flower. Moreover, we propose a light-controlled smart switch which can be used on non-contact (COVID-19) or dangerous (blasting) occasions. Additionally, we present a finite element simulation to predict the bending deformation, which guides the accurate control of the devices.

Abstract:Photothermal soft actuators have become a hot research topic in recent years due to the unique light-to-heat conversion, mechanical deformation, contactless operation, and extended applications from bionic design to intelligent robots. Moreover, since superhydrophobic surfaces offer drag reduction, anticorrosive, and oil absorption properties, the synergistic effects expand their smartness in micro-robots, environmental remediation, bioengineering, transportation, wireless delivery, and oil spill recovery applications. In this review, we have provided an overview of soft actuators based on the photothermal effect. We begin with a comprehensive overview of the photothermal conversion mechanism and the photothermal actuation mechanism. It explores three different types of photothermal actuation, discussing their design and mechanisms. Furthermore, we focus on the latest advancements in photothermal soft actuators, categorizing them based on actuation mechanisms and addressing their significance and associated challenges. The photothermal soft actuators enable bionic-like soft movement in the horizontal and vertical directions through bending, contraction, and rotation in response to light-induced heat. Then, this review introduces various applications of photothermal soft actuators. Finally, we draw insightful conclusions and expose exciting new possibilities in the field of photothermal actuators to create innovative solutions for photothermal soft actuators that will eventually benefit society.

Abstract:Bioinspired smart materials with synergistic allochroic luminescence and complex deformation are expected to play an important role in many areas of science and technology. However, it is still challenging to fabricate such soft actuators with high programmability, which can be manipulated in-situ with high spatial resolution. Herein, we have incorporated terminally functionalized aggregation-induced emission active tetraphenylethene derivative and photochromic spiropyran moieties into the networks of liquid crystal elastomers through covalent bonding to obtain the synergistic photochromic luminescence and programmable soft actuators. Bio-mimic functions and auxetic metamaterial-like devices were demonstrated feasible based on the combination of assembly and origami-programming strategy. These bioinspired devices with synergistic photochromic luminescence and complex photodeformation abilities could provide an elegant strategy for designing multi-functional liquid crystal actuators that could find potential applications in biomimetic soft robotics, camouflage devices, metamaterials, and beyond.

Abstract:Developing flexible shape changing actuators by means of 3D printing has become an exciting research area and has been widely used in our daily life and they are expected to play more important roles in soft robotics, biomedical devices and other high-tech areas. However, the development of such 3D printed shape changing actuators is limited due to the lack of 3D printing functional materials and insufficient response sensitivity of the actuators. This study demonstrates the 3D printing of photo-responsive shape changing composites based on polylactic acid (PLA) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) on paper substrates with fused deposition modeling (FDM) printing technology for the construction of flexible photothermal-responsive shape changing actuators. Introducing MWCNTs to a PLA matrix results in the enhancement of processabilities of the MWCNT-PLA composite during the FDM printing process compared to pure PLA. In the MWCNT-PLA composite filaments prepared in this work, MWCNTs are dispersed homogeneously in the PLA matrix. Furthermore, the MWCNT-PLA composite exhibits excellent photothermal effects and sensitivity under near-infrared irradiation (NIR), with the temperature of the composite increasing up to the T-g of PLA after 1 s irradiation and also being close to the T-m of PLA after irradiation for 15 s. Paper-based bilayer semicircular actuators that possess phototriggered shape changing properties are fabricated via 3D printing of the MWCNT-PLA composite on paper, which deform under near infrared irradiation and recover their original shape once the light source is switched off. This facile 3D printing strategy for flexible paper-based actuators would provide tremendous opportunities for the design and fabrication of biomimetic photothermal actuators and soft robotics.

Abstract:A novel microactuator based on photothermal expansion is introduced, which is actuated by laser beam eliminating external circuit. The mechanism of the photothermal expansion is theoretically analyzed, and the working principle of a U-shaped photothermal microactuator with two arms is introduced and the lateral deflection is calculated. LIGA technology involving X-ray lithography and electroplating is introduced to fabricate photothermal microactuators. The fabrication process with LIGA technology is introduced and important details such as X-ray mask and electroplating are discussed. Photothermal microactuators with different structures are fabricated by LIGA technology at Beijing Synchrotron Radiation Facility (BSRF) and tests are carried out with laser beam. The deflection of a V-shaped photothermal microactuator of Ni material can reach 25.8 μm under the control of a 1064 nm, 800 mW laser and a U-shaped can reach about 11 μm at an 808 nm, 600 mW laser.

Abstract:A simple strategy allowing for the fabrication of multi‐phototoresponsive 4D microstructures using two‐photon laser writing that can be actuated at different wavelengths of light, is presented. In particular, three classes of dyes (azobenzenes, donor‐acceptor Stenhouse Adducts (DASAs), and anthraquinone) enabling actuation using blue, green or red light, respectively, are exploited. For microscale 4D photoresponsive actuators, light is crucial in two ways. First, the underlying additive manufacturing techniques rely on photopolymerization processes triggered by the absorption of light. Second, the absorption of light serves as the actuation stimulus. The two absorptions can be conflicting. While the microstructure requires strong absorption at the actuation wavelength(s), this absorption should not interfere with that of the manufacturing process. Herein, a simple strategy is proposed to overcome these limitations and allow for the fabrication of multi‐photoresponsive 3D microstructures that can be actuated at different wavelengths of light. Two‐photon 3D laser printing is selected as the fabrication technique and liquid crystalline (LC) elastomers as the functional materials. In a first step, 3D microstructures are fabricated using an aligned LC ink formulation. Thereafter, up to five different dyes exhibiting absorptions that extend over the entire visible regime (400–700 nm) are successfully incorporated into the LC microstructures by an exchange process enabling a programmable actuation by irradiating with the suitable wavelength. Furthermore, by combining dyes exhibiting orthogonal absorptions, wavelength‐selective actuations are demonstrated.

Photothermal Thin Films with Highly Efficient NIR Conversion for Miniaturized Liquid-Crystal Elastomer Actuators

Abstract:This work presents the development of highly efficient photothermal thin films (PTFs) and the demonstration of their application on miniaturized polymer-based soft actuators. The proposed PTF, which comprises acrylic-based black paint and EGaIn liquid metal (LM) microdroplets, serves as an excellent absorber for efficiently converting near-infrared (NIR) irradiation into heat for actuating liquid-crystal elastomer (LCE) actuators. The introduction of LM microdroplets into the PTFs effectively increases the overall thermal efficiency of PTFs. Miniaturized soft crawlers monolithically integrated with the NIR-driven LCE actuators are also implemented for demonstrating the application of the proposed PTF. The crawler's locomotion, which is inspired by the rectilinear movement of snakes, is generated with the proposed PTF for inducing the LC-to-isotropic phase transition of the LCEs. The experimental results show that introducing LM microdroplets into the PTF can effectively reduce the thermal time constants of LCE actuators by 70%. Under periodic on/off NIR illumination cycles, the locomotion of crawlers with different dimensions is also demonstrated. The measurement results indicate that the proposed PTF is not only essential for enabling photothermal LCE actuation but also quite efficient and durable for repeated operation.

Abstract:Soft actuators hold great promise for applications in biomimetic robots, artificial muscles, and drug delivery systems due to their adaptability in diverse environments. A critical aspect of designing thermally responsive soft actuators is to achieve spatially programmable actuation under a global thermal stimulus. Different local actuation behaviors can be encoded in one actuator to enable complex morphing structures for different tasks. However, it is challenging to achieve programmability beyond one or binary states. This work introduces a new grayscale ultraviolet (UV) light processing method to fabricate soft actuators with spatially tunable Young's modulus, enabling multiple programmable states in one actuator. Together with a liquid crystal elastomer actuation layer and a photothermal heating layer, the LCE programming layer with spatially programmable moduli allows different regions of the soft actuator to bend to controllable extents under a global thermal stimulus. Various shape morphing patterns can be encoded using UV photomasks with spatially controlled grayscales. Additionally, caterpillar-inspired robots capable of bi-directional crawling and octopus-arm-inspired structures for object manipulation are demonstrated. This work represents advancements in the programmability of thermally responsive soft actuators, laying the foundation for their applications in advanced soft robotic systems.

Abstract:In this work, we are exploring the collective thermoplasmonic properties of small spherical gold nanoparticles embedded into poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (pNIPAM) films, with a focus on their application as efficient light-driven nanoheaters for smart soft actuation systems. Uniform Au-pNIPAM hybrid films with adjustable thickness in the micrometer range (1–22 μm) and distinct concentrations of gold nanoparticles were fabricated by using a photopolymerizable pNIPAM-based resin containing Au-pNIPAM core–shell microgels as building blocks (15 nm diameter gold cores). Upon 520 nm light excitation, the Au-pNIPAM films exhibit a significant temperature increase of up to 75 °C above room temperature at a light irradiance of 116 mW/mm2, as determined by thermal imaging. These results compare well with those obtained with an analytical model describing the rise in temperature produced by neighboring particles in a three-dimensional (3D) matrix under continuous illumination, with a relative margin of error of less than 7% for nearly all cases studied. Finally, light-guided swimming robots were fabricated by leveraging the collective photothermal properties of gold nanoparticles in the Au-pNIPAM films. Under light exposure, the trajectory and rotation of swimming robots floating at the air/water interface can be precisely controlled due to the light-induced Marangoni effect, with average speeds of up to 2.5 mm/s for triangular-shaped robots.

Abstract:With the rapid development of photoelectric technology, multispectral modulation materials are highly urgent to eliminate detection probability. However, it remains an extreme challenge to establish the platform for dynamic multispectral modulation from visible to microwave wavelengths. Herein, inspired by the lodging of plants, a thermal actuator (TA) was fabricated by gold layer coating MXene/Fe 3 O 4 @polyaniline (MFP) hybrids with the thermal-responsive polyurethane (TPU)-polycaprolactone (PCL) polymer blends. MFP exhibits excellent electromagnetic (EM) wave absorption due to excellent magnetic loss of Fe 3 O 4 , electricity loss of MXene, and dielectric loss of polyaniline, respectively. By applying an external thermal field, TA can change the shape from a lodging state to a vertical state due to the shape memory effect of TPU-PCL composite, which endows the TA with an excellent dynamic multispectral modulation ability. In detail, TA achieves a color change from yellow to black in the visible region, a transformation from high reflectance to high emittance in the infrared (IR) region, and a reflection loss (RL) modulation of 54.7 dB in the microwave region. Moreover, the TA exhibits excellent extensibility and shape reconfigurability. It is anticipated that the developed TA may serve as a guide for designing dynamic multispectral camouflage materials.
