Abstract:An omnidirectional structural color based on the metal-SiOx-metal stack structure is proposed, which can present the same perceived color for a broad range of incidence angles. The tunable structural color can be obtained with adjustable intermediate dielectric layer by simply adjusting the deposition condition, especially the oxygen flow rate during the deposition processes. The resonance condition can be satisfied across the whole visible light region with this special dielectric. The strong absorption caused by the resonance within the metal-SiOx-metal structure accounts for the efficient spectral filtering feature, and the constant phase shift within the dielectric layer leads to angle insensitivity of this color filter. This simple color tuning method for omnidirectional structural colors can have a great potential in various applications such as displaying, imaging, colorful decoration, anti-counterfeiting and so forth.

Abstract:<p>This work presents a novel approach of incorporating an ultrathin dye film into a classic dielectric‐absorber‐dielectric‐metal resonator configuration for generating high‐purity reflective structural colors. Utilizing a thin film of organic dye having the same color as the targeted reflection color as a part of the cavity layer in the structure, its absorption at complementary color wavelengths is significantly enhanced due to the strong cavity resonances, hence reflection at the unwanted wavelengths strongly suppressed, leading to the improved purity of the desired reflective color. This design principle can be applied to create essentially all colors, and is demonstrated by experiment to produce high‐purity blue and red colors. In addition, the fabricated device exhibits outstanding stability under UV exposure without additional protections compared to traditional organic pigments. The proposed method in this work largely simplifies the design process of high‐purity structural colors, which paves the way for more potential applications in various fields.</p>

Abstract:We propose a reflective chromatic polarizer based on one dimensional metal–dielectric–metal grating structure, which can present a great feature of efficient color filtering for TE polarization and blocking feature for TM polarization at 45° incidence. Three primary chromatic polarizers (cyan, magenta, yellow) with excellent performance are obtained. The effect of the geometrical parameters on the polarizing property and chromatic character is fully analyzed. A convenient and fast approach is provided to achieve color tuning for chromatic polarizers by simply varying the thickness of the intermediate dielectric layer. Moreover, the chromatic polarizer can keep the optical property up to 10° of the azimuth angle. The Fabry–Pérot resonance and the similar effect of the wire grid polarizer account for the spectral filtering feature and the polarizing feature of the chromatic polarizer.

Abstract:We propose omnidirectional reflective color filters based on metal-dielectric-metal subwavelength grating structure. By particle swarm optimization, the structural parameters of three color filters (yellow, magenta, cyan) are obtained. The optimized filters can present the same perceived specular color at unpolarized illumination for a broad range of incident angles. The reflectance curves at different incident angles keep almost invariable and the color difference is less than 6 in CIEDE2000 formula up to 45 degrees. Angle-insensitive properties including the incident angular tolerance, azimuthal angular tolerance and the polarization effect are investigated thoroughly to construct a real omnidirectional color filter. Through the analysis of the magnetic field, the physical origin is verified that the total absorption band at specific wavelength results from the localized surface plasmon resonance responsible for the angle insensitive spectral filtering. Abstract:We present a new scheme for visibly-opaque but near-infrared-transmitting filters involving 7 layers based on one-dimensional ternary photonic crystals, with capabilities in reaching nearly 100% transmission efficiency in the near-infrared region. Different decorative reflection colors can be created by adding additional three layers while maintaining the near-infrared transmission performance. In addition, our proposed structural colors show great angular insensitivity up to ±60° for both transverse electric and transverse magnetic polarizations, which are highly desired in various fields. The facile strategy described here involves a simple deposition method for the fabrication, thereby having great potential in diverse applications such as image sensors, anti-counterfeit tag, and optical measurement systems.

Abstract:Dynamic structural color has attracted considerable attentions due to its good tunable characteristics. Here, an ultrathin asymmetric Fabry-Perot (FP)-type structural color with phase-change material VO2 cavity is proposed. The color-switching performance can be realized by temperature regulation due to the reversible monoclinic-rutile phase transition of VO2. The various, vivid structural color can be generated by simply changing the thickness of VO2 and Ag layers. Moreover, the simple structural configuration enables a large-scale, low-cost preparation on both rigid and flexible substrates. Accordingly, a flexible dynamic structural color membrane is adhered on a cup with a curved surface to be used for temperature perception. The proposed dynamic structural color has potential applications in anti-counterfeiting, temperature perception, camouflage coatings among other flexible optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Abstract Wide gamut and angle-insensitive structural colors are highly desirable for many applications. Herein, a new type of lithography-free, planar bilayer nanostructures for generating structural colors is presented, which is basically composed of a deep-subwavelength, highly absorbing dielectric layer on an opaque metallic substrate. Experimental results show that a galaxy of brilliant structural colors can be generated by our structures, and which can cover ∼50% of the standard red–green–blue color space by adjusting the nanostructure dimensions. The color appearances are robust with respect to the angle of vision. Theoretical partial reflected wave analyses reveal that the structural color effect is attributed to the strong optical asymmetric Fabry–Perot-type (F–P-type) thin-film resonance interference. The versatility of the structural color properties as well as the simplicity of their fabrication processes make this bilayer structures very promising for various applications, such as security marking, information encryption, and color display, etc.

Abstract:The development of colored electrodes has significant implications for various applications, offering an enhanced blend of aesthetics and functionality across multiple fields. Traditional approaches to achieving this, such as altering material composition, modifying carrier density, and applying surface treatments or micro-nano structures, face challenges in terms of complexity and manufacturing costs. This study introduces an innovative, high-conductivity electrode design capable of flexibly controlling the reflective spectra. We have successfully fabricated various flexible colored devices characterized by high brightness and saturation through a room-temperature preparation process, exhibiting remarkably low electrical resistance of approximately 300 m Omega/sq. The construction of the asymmetrical Fabry-Perot resonance cavity, composed of a four-layer compact film stack, enables the enhancement or suppression of specific light wavelengths, facilitating efficient spectral filtering with conductive dielectric and metals. Moreover, the electrode exhibits remarkable bending properties, maintaining conductivity and color integrity even after 5000 bending cycles and at high curvatures (up to 90 m(-1)), a feature attributed to its ultrathin structure (<600 nm). Our findings showcase the electrode's potential in a wide range of electronic and optical applications, including electromagnetic shielding/camouflage and photovoltaic devices, as demonstrated in our research.

Abstract:Structural colors, resulting from the interaction of light with nanostructured materials rather than pigments, present a promising avenue for diverse applications ranging from ink-free printing to optical anti-counterfeiting. Achieving structural colors with high purity and brightness over large areas and at low costs is beneficial for many practical applications, but still remains a challenge for current designs. Here, we introduce a novel approach to realizing large-scale structural colors in layered thin film structures that are characterized by both high brightness and purity. Unlike conventional designs relying on single Fabry–Pérot cavity resonance, our method leverages coupled resonance between adjacent cavities to achieve sharp and intense transmission peaks with significantly suppressed sideband intensity. We demonstrate this approach by designing and experimentally validating transmission-type red, green, and blue colors using an Ag/SiO 2 /Ag/SiO 2 /Ag configuration on fused silica substrate. The measured spectra exhibit narrow resonant linewidths (full width at half maximum ∼60 nm), high peak efficiencies (>40 %), and well-suppressed sideband intensities (∼0 %). In addition, the generated color can be easily tuned by adjusting the thickness of SiO 2 layer, and the associated color gamut coverage shows a wider range than many existing standards. Moreover, the proposed design method is versatile and compatible with various choices of dielectric and metallic layers. For instance, we demonstrate the production of angle-robust structural colors by utilizing high-index Ta 2 O 5 as the dielectric layer. Finally, we showcase a series of printed color images based on the proposed structures. The coupled-cavity-resonance architecture presented here successfully mitigates the trade-off between color brightness and purity in conventional layered thin film structures and provides a novel and cost-effective route towards the realization of large-scale and high-performance structural colors.

Abstract:A novel and convenient scheme is proposed to achieve angle insensitive color filtering across a large color gamut by simply altering the thickness of the dielectric layer of a dielectric-metal-dielectric grating structure. The plasmonic filter presents a great feature of angle resolved spectrum response up to 60° and is independent of the azimuthal angle and the polarization state as well so as to construct an omnidirectional filter for practical applications. The color tuning feature of the proposed filter with varied dielectric thickness is attributed to the modulation of the condition for the localized surface plasmon resonance, which bears responsibility for the omnidirectional property of this plasmonic filter. This color-tuning method with a single mold size required can have wide applications in fields of display, colorful decoration, printing, and so forth.

Abstract:In this work, high-color-purity transmissive colors with high angular tolerance are proposed. The metal/dielectric film stacks, by means of induced transmission effect, are able to achieve similar to 60% peak transmission and similar to 60 nm transmission band, so as to cover a large color gamut. The filter presents good incident angle insensitivity up to 60 degrees, ascribed to the combined contribution of the constant total phase shift within the intermediate dielectric layer and the relatively high refractive index of the dielectric layers. And the matching of the optical admittances for metal/dielectric layers is responsible to the high transmission of the metal-based film stack. Moreover, the optical constants of silver film, affected by deposition technology have a great impact on the optical property of the color device including the bandwidth and peak transmission. And the thickness of the top dielectric layer as well as the metal/dielectric stack number can also alter the performance of the color filter.
Manipulation of resonance orders and absorbing materials for structural colors in transmission with improved color purity

Abstract:We present an improved color purity of additive transmissive structural color filters by controlling a resonance order and by inserting a highly absorbing material. The proposed structure consists of a single metal sandwiched by two transparent dielectric media serving as a cavity to minimize the ohmic loss in the metal mirrors, which is distinctly different from a conventional Fabry-Perot (FP) cavity that is in general designed to have two metal mirrors. Low reflections at an air-dielectric interface cause a quality-factor of a resonance to be reduced, causing a degraded color purity, which can be improved by employing a 1st order resonance that exhibits a narrower bandwidth than a fundamental FP resonant mode (0th order). For a red color with the improved purity, introducing an ultrathin absorbing layer in the middle of a top cavity enables the 1st resonance to be trivially influenced while selectively suppressing a 2nd order resonance appearing at the shorter wavelength region. Moreover, angle-insensitive performances up to 60° are attained by utilizing a cavity material with high index of refraction. Besides, the fabrication of the structural coloring devices involves a few deposition steps, thus rendering the approach suitable for applications over the large area. The described concept could be applied to diverse applications, such as colored solar panels, sensors, imaging devices, and decorations.

Abstract:Abstract A large number of structural colors proposed concentrate on the optical spectral features in the visible region for improving their color gamut, purity, and brightness. However, there are few attentions on the shortwave infrared region of structural colors, detrimental to human eyes under the long‐term exposure. Here, an asymmetric Fabry–Pérot cavity‐based reflective structural color, composed of planar alternating multilayers of Ti and indium tin oxide (ITO), is proposed and demonstrated, which possesses distinguishing optical features in both visible and shortwave infrared regions. The resonant optical filter at the visible region exhibits a high‐contrast reflective peak due to the constructive interference, generating purer and brighter reflective colors. While displaying vivid colors, the designed structure can also achieve an average light absorption up to 89% across the whole shortwave infrared region to effectively prevent it entering human eyes, benefitting from destructive interference. By controlling the dielectric ITO spacer thickness, full‐color display covering the entire visible region can be realized, even including black color. Consequently, the color gamut exhibits around 135% of standard Red Green Blue (sRGB) and 100% of Adobe RGB. Meanwhile, the proposed structural colors also demonstrate an angle tolerance of 60°, a good thermal stability, and mechanical flexibility.

Abstract:We present a dual-layer hafnium dioxide (HfO2) grating capable of full-color modulation in the visible spectrum by leveraging the magnetic dipole resonance induced by the lower-layer HfO2 grating, while the upper-layer HfO2 grating serves as a refractive index matching layer to effectively suppress high-order Mie resonances at shorter wavelengths. The HfO2/HfO2 grating exhibits a significantly larger distribution area in the CIE 1931 chromaticity diagram compared to the HfO2 grating. Furthermore, the structural color saturation closely approximates that of monochromatic light. Under varying background refractive index environments, this structure consistently exhibits high-quality structural color. However, the hue of the structural color undergoes alterations. When the polarization angle is below 20°, the saturation of the acquired structural color remains remarkably consistent. However, exceeding 20° results in a significant degradation in the quality of the structural color. This study demonstrates the promising potential for diverse applications, encompassing fields such as imaging and displays.

Abstract:We present quad-layered reflective structural color filters generating vivid additive primary colors by controlling a mode number in a Fabry–Perot (FP) cavity and an anti-reflective (AR) coating layer, thus accomplishing high spectral contrast which is highly demanded in creating sharp colors. The reflection brightness of fabricated structural color filters is over 78% and a color gamut is comparable to the standard color gamut (sRGB). Higher-order resonant modes are exploited yielding a narrow passband with strong suppression of the reflection at shorter and longer wavelength ranges for a green color, while red and blue colors are produced by employing fundamental resonant modes. Besides, the structural color filters maintain both high brightness and high color purity at oblique incidence angles up to 40° due to a small angle of refraction by a cavity medium with high refractive index. Moreover, a large-scale fabrication is enabled owing to the simplicity of a device structure, where thin film deposition is used. The scheme presented in this work may open the door to a number of applications, such as reflective displays, imaging devices, colored photovoltaics, and decorations.

Silicon Metasurface Embedded Fabry-Perot Cavity Enables High Quality Transmission Structural Color

Abstract:While nanoscale color generations have been studied for years, the high performance transmission structural color, simultaneously equipped with large gamut, high resolution, and optical multiplexing abilities, still remains as a hanging issue. Here, a silicon metasurface embedded Fabry-Pérot cavity is demonstrated to address this problem. By changing the planar geometries of metasurface units, the cavities provide transmission colors with 194% sRGB gamut coverage and 141111 DPI resolution, along with more than 300% enhanced angular tolerance. Such high density allows two-dimensional color mixing at diffraction limit scale. Beneficial from the polarization manipulation capacity of the metasurface, arbitrary color arrangements between cyan and red for two orthogonal linear polarizations are also realized. Our proposed cavities can be used in filters, printings, optical storages and many other applications in need of high quality and density colors.

Abstract:Structural colors are widely applied for their stability and their sophisticated optical responses. However, these colors always appear washed-out or pale assigning to the defect hardly avoided in the manufacturing procedures. It is still a challenge to bring multifunctional vivid color via a facile method. A composite structure combining 2D photonic crystal and Fabry-Perot cavity by a simple and convenient method is constructed here. Various metallic colors with tunable hue and high saturation are produced by the composite structure. What is more, an obvious optical Janus effect is created by the composite structure. Iridescent colors can be observed when viewing from the same side of incident light but only pale colors can be seen from the opposite side. The hues and saturation of the colors can be adjusted by the parameters of the composite structure. The experimental results indicate that the color is derived from the synergistic effect of the interference, the diffraction, and the Rayleigh scattering of the composite structure. The facile composite photonic structure pioneers a new way for art, architecture, and security features in anticounterfeiting materials.

Abstract:A novel approach for generating reflective full‐color structural colors with high purity and brightness by utilizing an asymmetric F‐P structure based on an ultra‐thin bilayer absorber Ni/GSST is proposed. The proposal of applying GSST films to the relevant fields in the visible light band is groundbreaking. These brightly colored devices can cater to various fields such as micro‐nano displays. This study proposes a general strategy for constructing an asymmetric Fabry–Perot structure based on an ultra‐thin composite absorber, Ni/Ge2Sb2Se4Te1, to produce reflective full‐color structural colors with high brightness and purity. The composite absorber effectively enhances the strong interference effect of thin film, which can significantly reduce the reflection bandwidth of the target band and the reflectivity of the non‐target band. Under the premise of optimizing the five‐layer base structure, full‐color structural colors can be tuned by only changing the thickness of the LaTiO3 layer. Using the ion‐assisted electron beam evaporation technique, a simple and efficient film deposition process, six color devices (namely red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple) are successfully prepared with reflection peaks exceeding 90%. The chromaticity coordinates of the proposed high‐purity red, green, and blue (RGB) samples are (0.554, 0.339), (0.280, 0.600), and (0.164, 0.075), respectively. These coordinates are fairly close to the standard RGB color coordinates used in liquid crystal displays. This device has a simple structure with a novel material combination and a low production cost, which makes it feasible for mass production using just one coating run process. It has excellent application potential in various fields such as micro‐nano displays, anti‐counterfeiting measures, reflective color filters, and decorations.

Abstract:Inspired by the structure of a beetle forewing, angularly heterochromatic structural colors with an asymmetric Fabry–Perot cavity are constructed by homologous magnetron sputtering, with high color saturation and stable mechanical properties. The ultrahigh‐performance parameters are determined by the interference of the reflective layer with an amorphous structure and its oxide and the absorbing island layer with a controllable structure. The existing color filter implementation schemes are prone to introduce prestress during the preparation process due to the large difference in thermal expansion coefficients of different layers of materials, resulting in poor mechanical stability. Inspired by beetle forewings' structure, it is proposed to construct asymmetric Fabry–Perot (F‐P) angular heterochromatic structural colors utilizing homologous materials through a continuous deposition method of magnetron sputtering technology. The fabricated large‐area F‐P‐type reflective filters not only exhibit high color saturation but also achieve good bonding ability between the layers with a steady‐state friction coefficient of ≈0.1. The large‐area reflective filter can achieve different colors such as blue, yellow, violet, and green, which is in agreement with the simulation results. This work not only provides a new design method for advanced decorative applications but also provides protection to the substrate.
