Abstract:Aluminum-doped strontium titanate SrTiO3(Al), has been demonstrated as the suitable photocatalyst for overall water splitting. Noble metals, such as RhCrO x , are widely applied to accelerate the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. Herein, Ni single atoms anchored on nitrogen-doped graphene (Ni SA-NG) are adopted to replace noble metal as hydrogen (H2) evolution cocatalysts for SrTiO3(Al)/CoO x photocatalyst. The prepared Ni SA-NG/SrTiO3(Al)/CoO x photocatalyst exhibits remarkable activity for photocatalytic overall water splitting with the H2 evolution rate of 498 μmol g−1 h−1 and oxygen (O2) evolution rate of 230 μmol g−1 h−1, respectively. Ni SA-NG not only improves the efficiency of photogenerated charge transfer and separation through the Ti–O–C bonds acting as the electron transfer freeway, but also provides highly active sites to accelerate the surface H2 evolution rate. This research provides a valuable method to construct SrTiO3-based photocatalyst without noble metal cocatalysts.

Abstract:Cubic SrTiO3 powders were synthesized by three methods: the polymerized complex (PC) method, the solid state reaction, and the milling assistant method. The samples obtained were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV–vis spectroscopy (UV–vis), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The mean diameters of the as-synthesized SrTiO3 particles were 30nm by the polymerized complex method, 140nm by the solid state reaction, and 30nm by the milling assistant method. The photocatalytic activity of hydrogen evolution from water splitting over SrTiO3 powders by the polymerized complex method is higher than that by the solid state reaction and the milling assistant method. Particle size, uniformity of components, and particle aggregation extent affect the photocatalytic activity of SrTiO3 for hydrogen evolution. The best rate of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution over SrTiO3 by the polymerized complex method under UV illumination is as high as 3.2mmolh−1g−1.

Abstract:The synergistic coupling of light and heat in solar energy has attracted increasing research attention. In this work, both codoping and coloading were applied to SrTiO3-based catalysts to improve their solar photo and thermal conversion, respectively, and maximum productivities of 51.55 and 25.59 mmol.g(-1).h(-1) were achieved for H-2 and O-2 in photothermal synergistic water splitting. The yield of H-2 was nearly double that achieved via pure photocatalysis. In addition to many experiments and characterizations, DFT calculations were also performed to clarify the photothermal synergy. It was found that both the light absorbance and mobility of photoinduced carriers could be promoted by solar thermal effects in the material. Meanwhile, the energy barriers of the key steps were reduced with increasing temperature in the hydrogen production driven by solar photo effects. This work offers new ideas for designing catalysts for solar hydrogen production with photothermal synergistic strategies.

Abstract:Activating metal ion‐doped oxides as visible‐light‐responsive photocatalysts requires intricate structural and electronic engineering, a task with inherent challenges. In this study, we employed a solid (template)‐molten (dopants) reaction to synthesize Bi‐ and Rh‐codoped SrTiO3 (SrTiO3:Bi,Rh) particles. Our investigation reveals that SrTiO3:Bi,Rh manifests as single‐crystalline particles in a core (undoped)/shell (doped) structure. Furthermore, it exhibits a well‐stabilized Rh3+ energy state for visible‐light response without introducing undesirable trapping states. This precisely engineered structure and electronic configuration promoted the generation of high‐concentration and long‐lived free electrons, as well as facilitated their transfer to cocatalysts for H2 evolution. Impressively, SrTiO3:Bi,Rh achieved an exceptional apparent quantum yield (AQY) of 18.9% at 420 nm, setting a new benchmark among Rh‐doped‐based SrTiO3 materials. Furthermore, when integrated into an all‐solid‐state Z‐scheme system with Mo‐doped BiVO4 and reduced graphene oxide, SrTiO3:Bi,Rh enabled water splitting with an AQY of 7.1% at 420 nm. This work underscores the significance of simultaneous structural and electronic engineering and introduces the solid‐molten reaction as a viable approach for this purpose.
Nitrogen-doped Ultrathin Graphene Encapsulated Cu Nanoparticles Decorated on SrTiO3 As an Efficient Water Oxidation Photocatalyst with Activity Comparable to BiVO4 under Visible-Light Irradiation

Abstract:Water oxidation is known as the bottleneck for both natural and artificial photosynthesis, and is still facing challenges in developing visible-light responsive photocatalyst with promoted efficiency. Herein, Cu nanoparticle encapsulated in nitrogen-doped ultrathin graphene (NC) layer decorated on SrTiO3 (STO) is designed as a high-efficient, low-cost photocatalyst for the photocatalytic water oxidation under visible-light irradiation. The O-2 evolution rate over 1% Cu@NC/STO is approximately 2 times that of commercial WO3, and even comparable to BiVO4. Systematical studies and density functional theory simulations show that nitrogen-doped graphene layer not only protects Cu NPs from oxidation, but also modifies the electronic states of carbon layer in addition to enhancing charge carriers separation, which ultimately promotes photocatalytic water oxidation with reduced apparent activation energy. Furthermore, in universality test, Cu@NC/STO showed an excellent activity for thermocatalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol. This work demonstrated the prospect of rational designing Cu-based photocatalysts with high stability and efficiency.
The Synergistic Effect of Pyridinic Nitrogen and Graphitic Nitrogen of Nitrogen-Doped Graphene Quantum Dots for Enhanced TiO2 Nanocomposites’ Photocatalytic Performance

Abstract:In this study, nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) and a TiO2 nanocomposite were synthesized using a simple hydrothermal route. Ammonia water was used as a nitrogen source to prepare the N-GQDs. When optically characterized by UV-vis, N-GQDs reveal stronger absorption peaks in the range of ultraviolet (UV) light than graphene quantum dots (GQDs). In comparison with GQDs/TiO2 and pure TiO2, the N-GQDs/TiO2 have significantly improved photocatalytic performance. In particular, it was found that, when the added amount of ammonia water was 50 mL, the content of pyridinic N and graphitic N were as high as 22.47% and 31.44%, respectively. Most important, the photocatalytic activity of N-GQDs/TiO2-50 was about 95% after 12 min. The results illustrated that pyridinic N and graphitic N play a significant role in photocatalytic performance.

Abstract:High performance and low-cost electrocatalysts for overall water splitting, i.e., catalyzing hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions with the same material, are of great importance for large-scale, renewable energy conversion processes. Here, we report an ultrafast (~ 7 ms) synthesis technique for transition metal chalcogenide nanoparticles assisted by high temperature treatment. As a proof of concept, we demonstrate that cobalt sulfide (~ 20 nm in diameter)@ few-layer graphene (~ 2 nm in thickness) core-shell nanoparticles embedded in RGO nanosheets exhibit remarkable bifunctional electrocatalytic activity and stability for overall water splitting, which is comparable to commercial 40 wt.% platinum/carbon (Pt/C) electrocatalysts. After 60 h of continuous operation, 10 mA·cm−2 water splitting current density can still be achieved at a low potential of ~ 1.77 V without any activity decay, which is among the most active for non-noble material based electrocatalysts. The presented study provides prospects in synthesizing highly efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts for large-scale energy conversion application via a simple yet efficient technique.

Abstract:The solar-driven water splitting process is highly attractive for alternative energy utilization, while developing efficient, earth-abundant, bifunctional catalysts for both oxygen evolution reaction and hydrogen evolution reaction has remained as a major challenge. Herein, we develop an ordered CoMnO@CN superlattice structure as an efficient bifunctional water-splitting electrocatalyst, in which uniform Co-Mn oxide (CoMnO) nanoparticles are coated with a thin, continuous nitrogen-doped carbon (CN) framework. The CoMnO nanoparticles enable optimized OER activity with effective electronic structure configuration, and the CN framework serves as an excellent HER catalyst. Importantly, the ordered superlattice structure is beneficial for enhanced reactive sites, efficient charge transfer, and structural stability. This bifunctional superlattice catalyst manifests optimized current densities and electrochemical stability in overall water splitting, outperforming most of the previously reported single- or bifunctional electrocatalysts. Combining with a silicon photovoltaic cell, this CoMnO@CN superlattice bifunctional catalyst enables unassisted solar water splitting continuously for ∼5 days with a solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency of ∼8.0%. Our discovery suggests that these transition metal oxide-based superlattices may serve as a unique structure modality for efficient bifunctional water splitting electrocatalysts with scale-up potentials.
Synergistic surface oxygen defect and bulk Ti3+ defect engineering on SrTiO3 for enhancing photocatalytic overall water splitting

Abstract:SrTiO3 as a photocatalytic overall water splitting material has received extensive attention in recent years, while effectively suppressing Ti3+ is the key to enhancing the photocatalytic performance. Herein, a polymerizable complexation method is employed to enable Al3+ uniformly enter into SrTiO3 lattice for reducing Ti3+, and substituting Ti4+ with the formation of oxygen vacancy. Thus, the photogenerated carrier transport is promoted, and the resulting appropriate surface oxygen vacancy is also conducive to the adsorption of water molecules and OH*. The optimized 2% Al3+-doped SrTiO3 possesses a lower Ti3+ concentration, compared with the same sample prepared by the solid-phase griding method. Consequently, 2% Al-STO sample deposited co-catalysts achieves the highest activity and durability with the H2 and O2 evolution rates of 1.256 mmol·h−1 and 0.692 mmol·h−1 (0.04 g catalyst), respectively, corresponding to the AQE value of 55.46% at 365 nm. The characterizations and DFT calculation results reveal that the uniform Al3+ doping promotes the increase in the surface oxygen vacancy, which is beneficial for accelerating the reduction reaction and facilitating carrier separation and migration, therefore enhancing the overall water splitting reaction.

Abstract:Cocatalysts are of great significance for photocatalytic overall water splitting (POWS). Ni-based cocatalysts are attractive candidates for replacing representative noble metals such as Pt, but they suffer from poor stability and low efficiency. Herein, Ni nanoparticles encapsulated in a nitrogen-doped ultrathin graphene (NC) layer are demonstrated to be an active, stable, and low-cost cocatalyst for POWS. It was determined that the H2 evolution rate over Ni@NC/SrTiO3 (STO) is about 3.2 times that of Ni/STO and is even superior to that of a typical Pt cocatalyst. Experiments and XPS studies showed that the unfavorable oxidation of Ni during the reaction is effectively suppressed through the selective coating of N-doped graphene. In addition to the improvement in the charge carrier dynamics, a kinetic study revealed that the apparent activation energy of POWS is reduced by 44% after the introduction of N. With the help of a machine learning potential, an in-depth theoretical study was carried out, and active sites with appropriate H* adsorption were statistically clarified by performing single-point energy calculations for approximately 700 sites on each model structure. The theoretical calculations demonstrated that the distribution of active sites with high spin densities is remarkably promoted due to the modification of the electronic structure of graphene by N doping. This work demonstrates the great potential of using highly stable and active Ni-based photocatalysts for POWS.

Abstract:Utilizing photocatalysts to split water into H2 and H2O2 simultaneously is an ideal but challenging process to obtain clean H2 energy and high valuable H2O2. Most of the photocatalysts currently studied for the overall water splitting are converting water into H2 and O2, resulting in further need of gas separation. Here, we reported a photocatalyst which can utilize the nano-Au based localized surface plasmonic resonance (LSPR) effect to produce H2 and H2O2 simultaneously. Nitrogen doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) pieced together into large graphene through a catalytic process by chloroauric acid, in which dodecahedron nano-Au particles can also be obtained concurrently. Then Au wrapped up by graphene can be in situ formed with good interfaces. Photocatalytic activity tests revealed that the as prepared catalysts show efficient photocatalytic overall water splitting activity with a H2 evolution rate of 65.6 μmol g-1 h-1 and H2O2 generation rate of 49.7 μmol g-1 h-1. This work provides a feasible route for the facile fabrication of graphene through the bottom-up polycondensation of N-GQDs by amide bonds and new insights into the synthesis of photocatalysts for overall water splitting into H2 and H2O2.

Abstract:Hydrogen production from overall water splitting using SrTiO3(Al)-based semiconductors is one of the most promising routes to address energy and environmental concerns. Noble metals are needed to accelerate water splitting by promoting the charge transfer and providing active sites. However, noble metal-based catalysts have high prices and rare resources. Herein, we demonstrate a strategy to construct highly active CoxP/SrTiO3(Al) for overall water splitting. Hydrothermal method followed by an ultrasonic process was applied to prepare CoxP dots, which were loaded on the whole surface of SrTiO3(Al) as bifunctional cocatalysts. Interestingly, the CoxP dots on the (110) planes of SrTiO3(Al) were partially oxidized for the OER reaction. However, CoxP dots on the (100) planes of SrTiO3(Al) for HER kept it as it was. The as-prepared CoxP/SrTiO3(Al) photocatalyst shows a stable HER rate of 1.36 mmol-1 h-1 and OER rate of 0.635 mmol-1 h-1. The strong interaction between CoxP and SrTiO3(Al) not only facilitates rapid charge separation but also provides a highly active site for overall water splitting. Our study provides a valuable method for constructing noble-metal-free SrTiO3(Al)-based photocatalysts.
Bimetallic Synergy in Ultrafine Cocatalyst Alloy Nanoparticles for Efficient Photocatalytic Water Splitting

Abstract:Crucial information from electrocatalytic assessments can serve as a valuable guideline for the rational design of highly active cocatalysts for photocatalytic overall water splitting. Herein, hybridization of ultrafine PtRu alloy nanoparticles with a solid‐solution structure and Al‐doped SrTiO3 results in an apparent quantum yield of 65% at 365 nm, which is one of the highest reported values among Rh‐free cocatalysts for SrTiO3‐based photocatalysts. Herein, PtRu solid‐solution alloy nanoparticles enable high‐performance H2 evolution reaction cocatalysts through the transfer of knowledge from electrocatalysis to photocatalysis. Ultrafine PtRu alloy nanoparticles (1.0 ± 0.2 nm in diameter) are synthesized by using a chemical polyol method and used for electro/photo‐catalyses. Integration of PtRu nanoparticles with carbon and Al‐doped SrTiO3 powders via liquid‐phase adsorption and successive two‐step air and H2 annealing ensures uniform deposition of PtRu alloy nanoparticles (<2 nm) with a solid‐solution structure. The PtRu alloy nanoparticles exhibit higher electrocatalytic activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction than monometallic Pt counterparts. Modifying Al‐doped SrTiO3 with PtRu alloy nanoparticles results in efficient photocatalytic overall water‐splitting activity with an apparent quantum yield of 65% at 365 nm and a solar‐to‐hydrogen energy conversion efficiency of 0.45%, which are the highest values among SrTiO3‐based photocatalytic water splitting systems with Rh‐free cocatalysts. Transient diffuse reflectance spectroscopy reveals that the PtRu nanoparticles have a superior electron‐capturing ability than the Pt counterparts, probably due to the decreased work function of Pt by alloying with Ru. This work establishes a framework to elucidate catalytic trends and provides rational design guidance toward the development of bimetallic solid‐solution nanoparticles as cost‐effective and highly active cocatalysts for overall water splitting.

Abstract:Photocatalytic split water attracts tremendous research interest because of its outstanding advantages in generating clean energy. Therefore, this work reports the synthesis of Pt/TiO 2 @CdS/Co 3 O 4 hollow core–shell nanocomposites using a hard template method. The resulting material was then used for photo-induced spontaneous water splitting. The rationally designed hollow core–shell structure of this material not only enhanced the light collection capacity but also improved the separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers owing to its TiO 2 /CdS heterojunction. The presence of the Pt and Co 3 O 4 catalysts in our novel material resulted in 63.2 and 29.7 μ mol/g of H 2 and O 2 yields, respectively. Our work provides insights into conversion efficiency improvements during visible light-assisted catalytic water splitting.

Abstract:An efficient and stable photocatalyst for overall water splitting is desirable for solar-energy conversion. Herein, Ni4P2 catalyst was obtained in situ photoreaction semiconductor composite and [Ni4(H2O)2(PW9O34)2]10- (Ni4P2). Photocatalytic hydrogen evolution from pure water is realized using CdS as the light harvester, CQDs as the electron acceptor and donor and Ni4P2 as catalyst without addition sacrificial reagents under visible light irradiation (λ = 420 nm), which exhibits water splitting activity with H2 evolution rate up to 145 μmol gcat-1 h-1. Experiments confirm the electrons transfer from CdS to CQDs, then to Ni4P2, resulting in accumulation of the electrons in Ni4P2 for H2 evolution. The generated holes at the VB of CdS transfer to CQDs and oxidize H2O to H2O2. The rotating ring-disk electrode test confirms the two-electron process (2H2O → H2 + H2O2). This work proposes an elegant strategy for how to design multicomponent photocatalyst to realize efficient water splitting.
