Abstract:In this paper,some of the microwave techniques used in plasma diagnostic systems on nuclear fusion device HL-2A tokamak are introduced.The basic principle,the circuits of every microwave diagnostic system and the measurement results in discharge are systematically presented.The electron temperature and its fluctuations of the main plasma are measured by electron cyclotron emission(ECE).The temporal and spatial resolution are up to 4 ms(swept frequency) or 1μs(single frequency)and 3cm respectively.The electron temperature range of the system is from 10ev to 10kev.With the microwave reflectometry,we can study the density profile,rotation and fluctuation of the plasma.The temporal resolution and the spatial resolution are 1ms and 1cm respectively.The average density of plasma in the diverter of the HL-2A tokamak is measured by microwave interferometer with 0.1ms temporal resolution.

Abstract:Real-time diagnosis of thermal plasma temperature is a very challenging and comprehensive technology, which can provide valuable reference in understanding chemical reaction processes of thermal plasma and verifying simulation results. In this paper, we reviewed contact and non-contact types of temperature diagnostic methods for thermal plasma. Working principle, application range and development direction of each diagnosis method are summarized with emphasis on optic emission spectroscopy in the thermal plasma temperature diagnosis. Real-time online analysis of thermal plasma is considered to be the main direction of future development.

Abstract:In this paper we give a short introduction to the use of atomic spectroscopy in plasma diagnostics. Both older works and exciting new branches of atomic physics, which have relevance to diagnostics, are discussed. In particular we focus on forbidden lines in Be-like ions, lines sensitive to magnetic fields and levels which have a lifetime dependence on the nuclear spin of the ion, i.e. f-dependent lifetimes. Finally we mention a few examples of where tokamaks, instead of needing atomic data, actually provide new data and lead to developments in atomic structure studies.

Abstract:In order to optimize the parameters of the plasma plume for atmospheric pressure plasma applications such as biological and industrial applications, it is highly necessary to thoroughly understand its characteristics. In this paper, various diagnostic techniques are discussed to characterize the atmospheric pressure plasma plume. The major emphasis of this work is to utilize possibly simple methods, low complexity in post data analysis and obtain in-situ information. The parameters of the plasma plume such as spatial variation of gas temperature, electron excitation temperature, plume velocity, plume current, electron density are experimentally measured. In addition, plasma discharge behavior and plume formation with various gas flow rates and applied voltage are studied. The characterization of the above parameters is carried out by using electrical diagnostics (voltage probe and a current sensor), Optical diagnostics (optical emission spectroscopy (OES), fast imaging method using ICCD camera), and thermocouple. The plasma plume/gas temperature along the plume length is measured by using a simple K-type thermocouple and is found to be in the range of (42.5 - 24.5) deg C. The OES is used to estimate the electron excitation temperature of plasma plume and to identify the key reactive species (OH, NO, N2+, O, etc.) present in the plume. ICCD camera is utilized to capture the temporal evolution of plasma and to estimate the plume velocity along the plume length. The current transformer is utilized to measure the plume current along the plume length. By using the velocity and current information, the plasma density is evaluated, and the obtained values are in the range of (0.069-5.96)x 10^12 cm^-3. The above range of parameters and tunable nature of our designed plasma source will be useful for the development and optimization of plasma sources for various applications.

Abstract:An overview of low temperature, partially-magnetized ion sources is presented. This class of devices is broadly characterized by plasma densities below 10 19 m -3 , electron temperatures below 100 eV, and magnetic field strength tailored such that electrons are magnetized whereas ions are not. The overarching approach is pedagogical, targeting an audience that does not necessarily have an expertise in low temperature devices. A tutorial is presented on the basic physics of operation of common ion sources including an overview of common methods for plasma generation and acceleration. A review of typical diagnostics and common applications of these plasma sources is also presented. Special attention is given to applications in plasma propulsion and materials processing. This class of ion sources is then discussed in the context of the current state of the field, key technical and scientific challenges, and future prospects.

Abstract:This mini review is to introduce the readers of Plasma to the field of plasma medicine. This is a multidisciplinary field of research at the intersection of physics, engineering, biology and medicine. Plasma medicine is only about two decades old, but the research community active in this emerging field has grown tremendously in the last few years. Today, research is being conducted on a number of applications including wound healing and cancer treatment. Although a lot of knowledge has been created and our understanding of the fundamental mechanisms that play important roles in the interaction between low temperature plasma and biological cells and tissues has greatly expanded, much remains to be done to get a thorough and detailed picture of all the physical and biochemical processes that enter into play.

Abstract:In this paper, the study of a plasma diagnostic system based on the THz time domain spectroscopy technique is presented. Such a system could potentially probe a large part of the electromagnetic spectrum currently covered by several other diagnostics in a single measurement. This feature, keeping in mind the basic requirements for plasma diagnostics in nuclear fusion experiments, such as robustness and hard environment applicability, as well as durability and low maintenance, makes the diagnostic of great interest. A conceptual design of the THz-TDS diagnostic has been developed, starting from the well-established classical microwave and far infrared plasma diagnostics landscape. The physical constraints and required instrumental characteristics have been studied and are described in detail here, together with the solutions available for each type of plasma measurement. Specific experimental laboratory tests of the different experimental configurations have been carried out, evaluating the capacity and potential of the novel diagnostic, together with the instrumental constraint, within the diagnostic parameter space.

Abstract:Diagnosis of atmospheric pressure low-temperature plasma parameters is of great significance to study the mechanism of plasma discharge and promote research in related application fields. For example, accurate and effective measurement of the molecular rotational and vibrational temperatures of gas discharge plasma can be used in many fields such as plasma spraying, plasma medical treatment, and aerospace combustion technology. The research content of this paper focuses on the diagnosis of plasma molecular temperature parameters in atmospheric pressure. Taking the needle-plate air discharge as an example, the plasma discharge emission spectrum data is obtained by a high-precision spectrometer, and the second positive system of nitrogen molecules $(C^{3}\Pi_{\mathrm{u}^{-}}B^{3}\Pi_{\mathrm{g}})$ is calculated and analyzed by the optical emission spectroscopy, which aims to study and analyze the temperature parameter characteristics and internal mechanism of gas discharge plasma under different experimental conditions. In the experiment, the similarities and differences of plasma temperature parameters in different discharge states generated by positive and negative DC power supplies with different needle-plate distances are compared and analyzed. At the same time, in view of the low efficiency of manual fitting of emission spectra, we build a spectral data set using Python script and use the grid iteration method to achieve high-efficiency fitting of temperature parameters. The content of this paper is of great significance for promoting the research of plasma discharge mechanisms and the development of related application fields.

Abstract:Plasma, the fourth and most pervasive state of matter in the visible universe, is a fascinating medium that is connected to the beginning of our universe itself. Man-made plasmas are at the core of many technological advances that include the fabrication of semiconductor devices, which enabled the modern computer and communication revolutions. The introduction of low temperature, atmospheric pressure plasmas to the biomedical field has ushered a new revolution in the healthcare arena that promises to introduce plasma-based therapies to combat some thorny and long-standing medical challenges. This paper presents an overview of where research is at today and discusses innovative concepts and approaches to overcome present challenges and take the field to the next level. It is written by a team of experts who took an in-depth look at the various biomedical applications, made critical analysis, and proposed ideas and concepts that should help the research community focus their efforts on clear and practical steps necessary to keep the field advancing for decades to come.

Low-cost sensors and circuits for plasma education: characterizing power and illuminance

Abstract:Industrial applications of plasma have significantly increased beyond semiconductor manufacturing in recent years. This necessitates training a skilled workforce in plasma science and technology. However, an essential challenge to this end stems from the high cost of plasma devices and diagnostics. The limited access to plasma devices has hindered plasma education, particularly in the least developed countries. To this end, this paper demonstrates how low-cost sensors and circuits can be developed to enable inexpensive plasma experiments in laboratory environments. In particular, we show how to measure high voltage, current, and power from a cold-atmospheric plasma discharge. Additionally, we develop a low-cost illuminance sensor and demonstrate how it can be used to estimate the corresponding plasma power. The low-cost sensors and electronics presented in this paper can aid educators in characterizing plasma power versus plasma illuminance.

Abstract:The order-of-magnitude performance leaps of ECR ion sources over the past decades result from improvements to the magnetic plasma confinement, increases in the microwave heating frequency, and techniques to stabilize the plasma at high densities. Parallel to the technical development of the ion sources themselves, significant effort has been directed into the development of their plasma diagnostic tools. We review the recent results of Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion Source (ECRIS) plasma diagnostics highlighting a number of selected examples of plasma density, electron energy distribution, and ion confinement time measurements, obtained mostly with the second-generation sources operating at frequencies from 10 to 18 GHz. The development of minimum-B ECR ion sources based on the superposition of solenoid and sextupole fields has long relied on semiempirical scaling laws for the strength of the magnetic field with increasing plasma heating frequency. This approach is becoming increasingly difficult with the looming limits of superconducting technologies being able to satisfy the magnetic field requirements at frequencies approaching 60 GHz. Thus, we discuss alternative ECRIS concepts and proposed modifications to existing sources that are supported by the current understanding derived from the plasma diagnostics experiments.

Abstract:Plasma-based technology is of great importance for a range of industrial applications. However, due to the complexity of gas-phase and surface chemical reactions, the underlying plasma chemistry is still poorly understood, leading to a growing demand for experimental setups on plasma diagnostics. In this paper, we report an apparatus that combines tunable synchrotron vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photoionization with molecular-beam mass spectrometry for detecting ionic and neutral species formed in the processes of plasma discharge. The products including reactive intermediates such as enols can be identified unambiguously with the measurements of photoionization mass spectrometry (PIMS) and photoionization efficiency spectra. The tunable VUV PIMS has been proven as an ideal and sensitive tool for a comprehensive understanding of plasma chemistry.

Abstract:Editorial on the Research Topic. Plasma physics is one of the most important tools for explaining our universe and is extensively used 7 in engineering, industry, medicine, and agriculture to improve the standard of living. Recently, cold 8 atmospheric plasma (CAP) has attracted significant attention due to its ability to generate a cocktail of 9 reactive oxygen species (ROS), reactive nitrogen species (RNS), UV radiation, and charged particles at 10 atmospheric pressure and room temperature. The investigation of CAP intersects multiple disciplines such 11 as physics, engineering, chemistry, biology, biochemistry, and many others. The goal of this research 12 topic, entitled "Plasma and Related Sciences: Experimental and Theoretical Approaches," is to collect 13 high-quality research related to CAP and plasmas, directly or indirectly, through the associated sciences. In the second article, L. Qiang et al reported that there is currently limited research on how gas ionization 26 affects the pulse formation process in loads driven by pulsed power sources. Therefore, a simulation method 27 using Particle-In-Cell/Moment-Collision Calculation (PIC/MCC) has been proposed to accurately model 28 gas ionization during electron beam generation in Linear Transformer Drivers (LTD). This method integrates 29 the electromagnetic field and charged particles with circuit modules, providing a clearer understanding of 30 the impact of gas ionization on pulse shape. Moreover, excessive gas ionization can lead to impedance 31 mismatches and potential load short circuits.

Abstract:Measurements of plasma electric fields are essential to the advancement of plasma science and applications. Methods for non-invasive in situ measurements of plasma fields on sub-millimeter length scales with high sensitivity over a large field range remain an outstanding challenge. Here, we introduce and demonstrate a new method for plasma electric field measurement that employs electromagnetically induced transparency as a high-resolution quantum-optical probe for the Stark energy level shifts of plasma-embedded Rydberg atoms, which serve as highly-sensitive field sensors with a large dynamic range. The method is applied in diagnostics of plasmas photo-excited out of a cesium vapor. The plasma electric fields are extracted from spatially-resolved measurements of field-induced shape changes and shifts of Rydberg resonances in rubidium tracer atoms. Measurement capabilities over a range of plasma densities and temperatures are exploited to characterize plasmas in applied magnetic fields and to image electric-field distributions in cyclotron-heated plasmas.

Abstract:This work investigates the discharge properties of a cylindrical magnetized capacitive coupled plasma discharge produced between a pair of coaxial cylinders. For the purpose of diagnosing plasma properties and electron energy distribution function (EEDF), an in-house electronic circuit and an RF-compensated Langmuir probe are devised and constructed. The second harmonic technique (SHT) has been applied to obtain the direct measurement of EEDF and evaluated the effect of RF electron magnetization on the bulk plasma heating within the discharge. The effect of external magnetic field on the overall rise in plasma properties has been verified by use of particle and energy balance equations derived for argon discharge.

Abstract:A low-temperature plasma can very well be confined by a simple magnetic dipole, such as in the Van Allen belts of Earth's magnetoshpere. This configuration can be reproduced in laboratory as a small experimental device, designed in such a way that the magnetic field lines remain within a vacuum-tight container and are virtually not intercepted by the container wall. In this paper we propose to use a dipole field for the realization of an efficient negative Ion source. To this purpose, we analyze the plasma confinement capabilities of such plasma source, in order to assess the equilibrium pressure and estimate the particle trajectories and drifts.

Abstract:The nuclear reactions in a plasma system with energy distribution deviated from Maxwellian are proved to have some unique characteristics including those in their product energy spectrum. Based on this, a new nuclear diagnostic scheme for measuring the nonthermal ion energy spectrum in high-energy-density plasmas is proposed, where the effective temperature and spectral peak of the nonthermal ion energy spectrum are uniquely determined by the spectral width and spectral peak of the product energy spectrum. Then, taking the laser-driven magnetic reconnection experiment as an example, according to the particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation results coupled with the proton-boron (pB) fusion reaction, the pB reaction rate is increased by 4 orders of magnitude; meanwhile, the product spectral peak and spectral width are shifted towards higher energy, deviating from the predictions of the thermal equilibrium assumption, both of which are on account of the accelerated and heated suprathermal protons in magnetic reconnection. Furthermore, analyzing a series of simulation results, the new product spectrum analysis approach suitable for the parameter range of laser-driven magnetic reconnection is found.

Abstract:During the last fifty years, nonneutral plasma physics has developed into a definite subfield of basic research, whose main focus has been on the collective properties of systems comprising many charged particles, such as nonlinear dynamics, equilibrium, and stability. And yet, aided by the development of suitable electromagnetic traps and ever-evolving manipulation and detection techniques, this field has branched towards many other applications well beyond the scope of plasma physics, with a notable example being low-energy antimatter. This review presents a selection of recent developments and perspectives in nonneutral plasmas, covering both basic plasma physics phenomena, which are also relevant to the nonlinear dynamics of two-dimensional fluids, as well as the advances they have enabled in the progress of antihydrogen formation, positron and positronium physics, and the creation of exotic samples such as pair plasmas.

Integral electrical characteristics and local plasma parameters of a RF ion thruster

Abstract:Comprehensive diagnostics has been carried out for a RF ion thruster based on inductively coupled plasma (ICP) source with an external flat antenna coil enhanced by ferrite core. The ICP was confined within a cylindrical chamber with low aspect ratio to minimize plasma loss to the chamber wall. Integral diagnostics of the ICP electrical parameters (RF power balance and coil current) allowed for evaluation of the antenna coils, matching networks, and eddy current loss and the true RF power deposited to plasma. Spatially resolved electron energy distribution functions, plasma density, electron temperatures, and plasma potentials were measured with movable Langmuir probes.

Abstract:To study the electromagnetic properties through reentry plasma on ground, a large-sized inductive coupled plasma generator is designed to produce a long-duration, large size and high temperature plasma flow in a low-pressure vacuum tank. Among all plasma parameters, the spatial distribution of electron density and electron temperature is of utmost importance for analyzing the electromagnetic scattering properties. In this study, we used the emission spectroscopy diagnosis method to explore the aforementioned parameters at two locations: upflow and downflow of the discharge coil in the plasma generator. Experiments were conducted under various discharge conditions for argon, with the panel power ranging from 28 kW to 85 kW. The results showed that, at the upflow of the discharge coil, the electron temperature at the center was higher than that at the edge, exhibiting an arch-shaped profile. However, at the downflow of the discharge coil, the electron temperature at the center was lower than that at the edge, exhibiting a saddle-shaped profile. The electron density exhibited a completely opposite distribution compared to the electron temperature, with higher values at the edge for upflow and higher values at the center for downflow. By varying the panel power, we observed the similar phenomenon: the electron temperature decreased, while the electron density increased with the increase in power. Finally, brief analysis was provided at the end of the paper. This study offered valuable insights into the transition of plasma distribution in a plasma generator, providing a reference for future research on the propagation of electromagnetic waves in plasma sheaths.
