Abstract:X-ray phase contrast imaging holds great promise for improving the visibility of light-element materials such as soft tissues and tumors. Single-mask differential phase contrastnimaging method stands out as a simple and effective approach to yield differential phase contrast. In this work, we introduce a novel model for a single-mask phase imaging system based on the transport-of-intensity equation. Our model provides an accessible understanding of signal and contrast formation in single-mask X-ray phase imaging, offering a clear perspective on the image formation process, for example, the origin of alternate bright and dark fringes in phase contrast intensity images. Aided by our model, we present an efficient retrieval method that yields differential phase contrast imagery in a single acquisition step. Our model gives insight into the contrast generation and its dependence on the system geometry and imaging parameters in both the initial intensity image as well as in retrieved images. The model validity as well as the proposed retrieval method is demonstrated via both experimental results on a system developed in-house as well as with Monte Carlo simulations. In conclusion, our work not only provides a model for an intuitive visualization of image formation but also offers a method to optimize differential phase imaging setups, holding tremendous promise for advancing medical diagnostics and other applications.

Abstract:X-ray phase contrast imaging (XPCI) is an emerging imaging modality for industrial inspections and biomedical applications. A polycapillary semilens is utilized in the grating-based XPCI to reduce the imaging time or improve the image quality of the reconstructed images in this work. The proposed system is proved to be effective for improving the contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) of the reconstructed images compared with using an aperture diaphragm in the system under the same exposure time. The polycapillary semilens concentrates the X-rays on the region of interest (ROI) of the sample, which reduces the unnecessary radiation in other areas.

Abstract:Numerous advances have been made in X-ray technology in recent years. X-ray imaging plays an important role in the nondestructive exploration of the internal structures of objects. However, the contrast of X-ray absorption images remains low, especially for materials with low atomic numbers, such as biological samples. X-ray phase-contrast images have an intrinsically higher contrast than absorption images. In this review, the principles, milestones, and recent progress of X-ray phase-contrast imaging methods are demonstrated. In addition, prospective applications are presented.
Tri-directional X-Ray Phase Contrast Multimodal Imaging Using One Hexagonal Mesh Modulator.

Abstract:Objective. X-ray phase contrast imaging is a promising technique for future clinical diagnostic as it can provide enhanced contrast in soft tissues compared to traditional x-ray attenuation-contrast imaging. However, the strict requirements on the x-ray coherence and the precise alignment of optical elements limit its applications towards clinical use. To solve this problem, mesh-based x-ray phase contrast imaging method with one hexagonal mesh is proposed for easy alignment and better image visualization.Approach. The mesh produces structured illuminations and the detector captures its distortions to reconstruct the absorption, differential phase contrast (DPC) and dark-field (DF) images of the sample. In this work, we fabricated a hexagonal mesh to simultaneously retrieve DPC and DF signals in three different directions with single shot. A phase retrieval algorithm to obtain artifacts-free phase from DPC images with three different directions is put forward and false color dark-field image is also reconstructed with tri-directional images. Mesh-shifting method based on this hexagonal mesh modulator is also proposed to reconstruct images with better image quality at the expense of increased dose.Main results. In numerical simulations, the proposed hexagonal mesh outperforms the traditional square mesh in image evaluation metrics performance and false color visualization with the same radiation dose. The experimental results demonstrate its feasiblity in real imaging systems and its advantages in quantitive imaging and better visualization. The proposed hexagonal mesh is easy to fabricate and can be successfully applied to x-ray source with it spot size up to 300μm.Significance. This work opens new possibilities for quantitative x-ray non-destructive imaging and may also be instructive for research fields such as x-ray structured illumination microscopy (SIM), x-ray spectral imaging and x-ray phase contrast and dark-field computed tomography (CT).

Abstract:In-line Phase Contrast Imaging using a micro-focus X-ray source enables weakly absorbing specimens to be imaged successfully with X-rays and enhances the visibility of fine scale structure in more strongly absorbing specimens greatly. Getting the intensity on the image plane, we can get the phase contrast of an object by phase retrieval method. We got phase contrast of a black ant in different position and obtained the phase retrieval result by Transport of Intensity Equation method. On the base of edge visibility formula and entropy method, we quantitatively compare different edge visibility results of the images in different position and the differences between original phase contrast image and phase retrieval image.

Abstract:Since quantitative phase distribution reflects both cellular shapes and conditions from another view, compared to traditional intensity observation, different quantitative phase microscopic methods are proposed for cellular detections. However, the transport of intensity equation-based approach not only presents phase, but also intensity, which attracts much attention. While classical transport of intensity equation needs multi-focal images which often cannot realize simultaneous phase measurement, in this Letter, to break through the limitation, a real-time quantitative phase imaging method using transport of intensity equation is proposed. Two identical CCD cameras are set at the binocular tubes to capture the same field of view but at different focal planes. With a double-frame algorithm assuming that the on-focal image is the average of over- and under-focal information, the proposed method is capable of calculating quantitative phase distributions of samples accurately and simultaneously indicating its potentialities in cellular real-time monitoring.

Abstract:Propagation-based phase-contrast imaging was simulated based on paraxial Fresnel-Kirchoff diffraction integral and spherical wave illumination. Under a developed micro-CT system parameters, the effects of focal-spot size and imaging geometry on phase-contrast imaging have been investigated using a 2 mm thickness polystyrene edge phantom. An equivalent mono-energy was used to substitute the polychromatic spectrum of the micro-focus x-ray source. To consider effects of focal-spot size and detector resolution, the obtained phase-contrast image with an ideal point source was convolved with source intensity distribution and point spread function of detector. Simulations show reasonable influences of the two parameters and are in good agreement with experimental results.
Single Exposure Quantitative Phase Imaging with a Conventional Microscope using Diffusion Models

Abstract:Phase imaging is gaining importance due to its applications in fields like biomedical imaging and material characterization. In biomedical applications, it can provide quantitative information missing in label-free microscopy modalities. One of the most prominent methods in phase quantification is the Transport-of-Intensity Equation (TIE). TIE often requires multiple acquisitions at different defocus distances, which is not always feasible in a clinical setting. To address this issue, we propose to use chromatic aberrations to induce the required through-focus images with a single exposure, effectively generating a through-focus stack. Since the defocus distance induced by the aberrations is small, conventional TIE solvers are insufficient to address the resulting artifacts. We propose Zero-Mean Diffusion, a modified version of diffusion models designed for quantitative image prediction, and train it with synthetic data to ensure robust phase retrieval. Our contributions offer an alternative TIE approach that leverages chromatic aberrations, achieving accurate single-exposure phase measurement with white light and thus improving the efficiency of phase imaging. Moreover, we present a new class of diffusion models that are well-suited for quantitative data and have a sound theoretical basis. To validate our approach, we employ a widespread brightfield microscope equipped with a commercially available color camera. We apply our model to clinical microscopy of patients' urine, obtaining accurate phase measurements.

Abstract:Differential X-ray phase-contrast tomography (DPCT) refers to a class of promising methods for reconstructing the X-ray refractive index distribution of materials that present weak X-ray absorption contrast. The tomographic projection data in DPCT, from which an estimate of the refractive index distribution is reconstructed, correspond to one-dimensional (1D) derivatives of the two-dimensional (2D) Radon transform of the refractive index distribution. There is an important need for the development of iterative image reconstruction methods for DPCT that can yield useful images from few-view projection data, thereby mitigating the long data-acquisition times and large radiation doses associated with use of analytic reconstruction methods. In this work, we analyze the numerical and statistical properties of two classes of discrete imaging models that form the basis for iterative image reconstruction in DPCT. We also investigate the use of one of the models with a modern image reconstruction algorithm for performing few-view image reconstruction of a tissue specimen.

Abstract:X-ray phase-contrast imaging is a potential nondestructive testing and diagnostic technology in medicine, biology and materials science. It provides high sensitivity and contrast of weakly absorbing low-Z objects by measuring phase shifts of the X-rays. In this paper, we propose a novel phase-contrast imaging method using only one absorption grating and a high-resolution detector. The intensity distribution downstream of the grating is recorded and analyzed by the high-resolution detector directly. We use a spatial phase demodulation method to retrieve the phase information. Only one image is needed. Numerical simulations are performed to validate that the setup of our method is greatly simplified compared with the phase-stepping method and our method can significantly reduce the time-consuming and the unnecessary dose.
Fast implicit diffusive dark-field retrieval for single-exposure, single-mask x-ray imaging

Abstract:Complementary to conventional and phase X-ray radiography, dark-field imaging has become central in visualizing diffusive scattering signal due to the spatially-unresolved texture within an object. To date most diffusive-dark-field retrieval methods require either the acquisition of multiple images at the cost of higher radiation dose or significant amounts of computational memory and time. In this work, a simple method of X-ray diffusive dark-field retrieval is presented, applicable to any single-mask imaging setup, with only one exposure of the sample. The approach, which is based on a model of geometric and diffusive reverse-flow conservation, is implicit and non-iterative. This numerically fast methodology is applied to experimental X-ray images acquired using both a random mask and a grid mask, giving high quality reconstructions that are very stable in the presence of noise. The method should be useful for high-speed imaging and/or imaging with low-flux sources.

Abstract:Assessing tissues’ inhomogeneous optical properties is helpful for diagnosis, but high-cost measurement and experimental setups limit its development, data collecting and applications. In this paper, a portable microscope is proposed to assess the inhomogeneous optical properties of the sample. In the single LED illumination mode, accurate quantitative phase (QP) map can be recovered from 5 intensity images captured at different axial positions. Then based on the scattering-phase theorem and statistical dispersion relation (SDR), the inhomogeneous optical properties of the sample can be quantitatively assessed from these QP maps. In the incoherent dark field illumination mode, strong scattering structures can be observed easily without post processing. An improved resolution comparing with bright field imaging and qualitative optical properties would be obtained. In contrast to DHM and SLIM, our setup is cost-effective, use-flexible, and with a small amount of data acquisition, thus having the potential to promote the development of assessing tissues’ inhomogeneous optical properties, especially in resource-limited areas.

Abstract:Hard X-ray phase-contrast imaging provides high sensitivity of weakly absorbing low-Z objects in medicine, biology and materials science. The traditional viewpoint is that coherent X-rays and coherent measurements are essential to hard X-ray phase-contrast imaging. In this paper, a differential phase-contrast imaging experimental system is introduced to obtain refraction-angle images based on the theory of infinite fringe moire deflectometry under the incoherent condition with weakly coherent X-rays from the conventional X-ray tube without Talbot effect. The experiments on material and biological samples prove that differential phase-contrast imaging can be realized under more relaxed condition.

Abstract:Differential interference contrast (DIC) microscopy is an inherently qualitative phase-imaging technique. What is obtained is an image with mixed phase-gradient and amplitude information rather than a true linear mapping of actual optical path length (OPL) differences. Here we investigate an approach that combines the transport-of-intensity equation (TIE) with DIC microscopy, thus improving direct visual observation. There is little hardware modification and the computation is noniterative. Numerically solving for the propagation of light in a series of through-focus DIC images allows linear phase information in a single slice to be completely determined and restored from DIC intensity values.

Abstract:X-ray phase-contrast imaging has experienced rapid development over the last few decades, and in this technology, the phase modulation strategy of phase-stepping is used most widely to measure the sample's phase signal. However, because of its discontinuous nature, phase-stepping has the defects of worse mechanical stability and high exposure dose, which greatly hinder its wide application in dynamic phase measurement and potential clinical applications. In this manuscript, we demonstrate preliminary research on the use of integrating-bucket phase modulation method to retrieve the phase information in grating-based X-ray phase-contrast imaging. Experimental results showed that our proposed method can be well employed to extract the differential phase-contrast image, compared with the current mostly used phase-stepping strategy, advantage of integrating-bucket phase modulation technique is that fast measurement and low dose are promising.

Abstract:Hard x-ray phase-contrast imaging provides high sensitivity to weakly absorbing low-Z objects in medicine, biology, and materials science. Here, we describe a feasible method to obtain differential phase-contrast images directly with incoherent x-ray sources, avoiding the Talbot effect, which requires coherent x rays. This method was validated experimentally on material and biological samples, and the results prove that differential phase-contrast imaging can be realized under more relaxed conditions. It also demonstrates the feasibility of phase-contrast imaging with conventional x-ray tubes, and should benefit clinical diagnoses, biological examinations, and material inspections in the near future.

Abstract:Abstract Grating-based x-ray phase-contrast imaging provides three simultaneous image channels originating from a single image acquisition. While the phase signal provides direct access to the electron density in tomography, there is additional information on sub-resolutional structural information which is called dark-field signal in analogy to optical microscopy. The additional availability of the conventional attenuation image qualifies the method for implementation into existing diagnostic routines. The simultaneous access to the attenuation coefficient and the electron density allows for quantitative two-material discrimination as demonstrated lately for measurements at a quasi-monochromatic compact synchrotron source. Here, we investigate the transfer of the method to conventional polychromatic x-ray sources and the additional inclusion of the dark-field signal for three-material decomposition. We evaluate the future potential of grating-based x-ray phase-contrast CT for quantitative three-material discrimination for the specific case of early stroke diagnosis at conventional polychromatic x-ray sources. Compared to conventional CT, the method has the potential to discriminate coagulated blood directly from contrast agent extravasation within a single CT acquisition. Additionally, the dark-field information allows for the clear identification of hydroxyapatite clusters due to their micro-structure despite a similar attenuation as the applied contrast agent. This information on materials with sub-resolutional microstructures is considered to comprise advantages relevant for various pathologies.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a quantitative phase imaging approach which has the merits of high accuracy and less computational load. It starts with estimating phase from the transport of intensity equation that is later used as an initial estimate for the accelerated iteration of the Gerchberg–Saxton technique for phase estimation. The proposed technique has faster convergence characteristics that utilize the gradients at each iterative update step to estimate the actual phase value. Simulations and experimental studies related to microscopic objects have been implemented and verified. The proposed technique not only develops the ability of a traditional algorithm in terms of computation efficiency, but also provides a valuable processing foundation for novel-design imaging strategies. Therefore, in the future it may be used in life science applications, such as biological cell observation and even real-time dynamic measurement of living cells.
