Abstract:The effects of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) component on the crystallization kinetics, crystalline structure, phase transition, and morphology of polymorphic poly(butylene adipate) (PBA) in their miscible PVDF/PBA binary blends have been investigated. The polymorphism of PBA can be regulated upon blending with PVDF. The incorporated PVDF faciliates the formation of PBA alpha-crystal, which is probably attributed to the thermodynamic and kinetic contributions. From the crystallization kinetics, it was found that a small amount of PVDF acts as a nucleating agent and can accelerate the crystallization of PBA, while a large amount of PVDF hinders the crystallization of PBA due to the confinement effect. In addition, the addition of PVDF greatly accelerates the beta- to alpha-form phase transition of PBA upon annealing the PBA beta-form at higher tmeperataure (48 degrees C). However, the large amount of PVDF decelerates the phase transition to a certain extent. The possible reasons for these phenomena were also proposed.

Abstract:ABSTRACTPoly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) has been widely used in electric devices due to electroactive β polymorph. In this article, we probe the formation of β phase under friction by spectroscopy and thermal analysis. During continuous friction, entire sliding of PVDF is identified with two regimes, i.e., running‐in and steady‐state. At initial running‐in period, friction surfaces are dominated by plastic strain, which leads to striking formation of β phase from α polymorph (α→β). Subsequently, melting‐flow domains almost cover friction surfaces at steady‐state. Thus, formation of β crystal is correspondingly induced by shear crystallization. Nevertheless, β‐crystal content at steady‐state is lower than that at running‐in. With sliding proceeding, moreover, β‐crystal content exhibits a gradually decreasing tendency, attributed to rising surface temperature. Besides, the friction‐induced β phase is further confirmed by evaluation of wear debris. Overall, friction plays a crucial role as to the formation of β phase. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Taming the Phase Transition Ability of Poly(vinylidene fluoride) from α to γ′ Phase

Abstract:The transition of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) α crystals to γ′ phase is, in general, unpredictable. In the present work, the related α–γ′ phase transition has been regulated through adjusting the thermal treatment protocol of the sample. The enhanced α–γ′ phase transition ability has been achieved through stepwise melt crystallization of PVDF. It consists of three steps, including (i) isothermal crystallization at Tc1 for tc1, (ii) quick cooling from Tc1 to room temperature at 25 °C, and (iii) isothermal annealing at a relative higher temperature of Tc2 for tc2. The obtained results demonstrate that the insufficient melting at Tc2 of the α-PVDF microcrystallites created during cooling from Tc1 to 25 °C promotes the γ-PVDF crystallization during tc2 with a curled lamellar structure. These γ-PVDF crystals accelerate the transition of α-PVDF spherulites formed at Tc1 into its γ′ counterpart simultaneously during annealing at Tc2. The α–γ′ conversion efficiency is confirmed to be dependent on the cooling rate from Tc1 to 25 °C as well as the annealing temperature of Tc2. A synergistic adjustment of the cooling rate from Tc1 to 25 °C and the Tc2 can result in a full transformation of the α-PVDF spherulites formed at Tc1 into γ′-PVDF spherulites. Abstract:The crystal structure has a great influence on the dielectric and piezoelectric performance of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF). In this work, we prepared PVDF films with two typical crystalline phases (α and β). In situ Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) and Piezoelectric force microscopy (PFM) were employed to investigate the responses of different PVDF crystalline phases to charge mobility, polarization, and piezoelectric properties. We used a homemade Kelvin probe force microscope (KPFM) to inject charges into the two crystalline phases to investigate the differences in the response of different crystalline phases of PVDF to electrical excitation on a microscopic scale. It was found that the α-phase has a lower charge injection barrier and is more susceptible to charge injection and that the α-phase is accompanied by a faster charge dissipation rate, which makes it easier to accumulate charge at the interface between the α-phase and β-phase PVDF. Moreover, the PFM polarization manipulation showed no change in the amplitude and phase diagram of the α-phase under ±10 V bias. In contrast, the β-phase showed a clear polarization reversal phenomenon and a significant increase in piezoelectric amplitude, which is consistent with its polar intrinsic properties. This study provides valuable insights into the multiphase contributions and a reference for designing advanced PVDF dielectrics.

Abstract:Phase control is now challenging the manufacturing of electroactive polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) toward energy storage applications. Currently, the state-of-the-art approach in fabricating virgin, unfilled PVDF with predominantly the β-phase always needs complex procedures and requires extreme processing conditions. Herein, for the first time, we fabricated PVDF with a controlled β-phase under mild processing conditions by introducing a cyclic pulsating pressure (CPP) during hot pressing. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and wide-angle X-ray diffraction revealed the relationship between the β-phase fraction and CPP condition. Consequently, we obtained melt-processed, virgin, and unfilled PVDF with 72.2% β-phase, as well as enhanced dielectric and mechanical properties, under hot pressing with a maximum pressure as low as 40 MPa. The mechanism of volume reduction-induced β-phase formation was proposed and verified. Moreover, in contrast to the conventional understanding of the phase transition that requires continuous ultrahigh pressure, we find that the inclusion of the relaxation process can further promote the formation of the β-phase. Abstract:The rheological behavior of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) samples of different molecular weights was investigated by means of high pressure capillary rheometer and rotational rheometer. Information on the rheological properties of such materials above melt temperatures is of interest as this can lead to an improved understanding of polymer behavior in processing and fabrication technologies. Shift factors derived from time-temperature superposition showed good fit to the Arrhenius equation with a flow activation energy E of almost 74 kJ/mol, which was essentially independent of polymer molecular weight suggesting the unit of flow was a collective motion of chain segments rather than the whole chain itself.

Abstract:Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) is a basic polymer that has been extensively used in flexible electronics, with the properties differing in terms of multiple phases, e.g. α, β, and γ. As generally involved, processing induced phase variations have not yet been identified clearly, which furthermore often embarrasses the attributions and contributions in the properties and mechanisms. To this end, the phase compositions and evolutions in pure PVDF films are systematically tuned and explored by annealing and quenching processing. The annealed PVDF exhibits a predominant γ-phase, while α-phase is dominated in quenched PVDF. Upon the induced different phase compositions, the optimally processed PVDF films similarly exhibit an ultrahigh dielectric energy storage density e.g. 19.66 J cm−3 for annealed and 21.73 J cm−3 for quenched PVDF film, respectively, but only the former maintains a simultaneously high discharge efficiency of 65 %. With showing excellent energy storage performance, the processed especially the annealed PVDF film could compare to many existing high-performance dielectric energy storage systems. This work thus not only uncovers the phase evolutions as well as their impacts on the properties in PVDF system, but also demonstrates firstly a high energy storage performance in pure PVDF.

Abstract:Poly vinylidene fluoride (PVDF) is a versatile polymer that shows polymorphism, and most of its applications are based on its piezoelectric properties given by its polar crystalline phases. Increasing the polymer's polar β-phase content has been a major pursuit in material science. We present the results on the evolution of induced polymorphic changes of PVDF through thermal treatment and the presence of the nano-ZnO with different morphologies. Three types of samples—a PVDF pure layer, PVDF:ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) and PVDF:ZnO nanorods (NRs)—were subjected to stress by heating at different temperatures from 50 °C close to melting temperature, 170 °C. The changes in PVDF–ZnO composite layers were investigated in situ using an experimental setup consisting of a high-resolution micro-Raman spectrometer and a thermo-electric cell. The ZnO NPs and NRs added in PVDF lead to obtaining a PVDF nanocomposite in which the intensity of the β phase is much higher than that of the α phase: intensities ratio Iβ(840.6 cm−1)/Iα(798.9 cm−1) > 5.56. The phase is stable up to 150 °C, and with the increase in temperature to 170 °C, the β phase passes to a lower crystallinity α phase with a large amorphous content highlighted by the 400–700 cm−1 and 800–1000 cm−1 regions without Raman peaks.

Abstract:Oriented polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) films were obtained in multistage process based on melt extrusion of polymer. We investigated the results of the polymorphic α→β crystalline phase transformation in the PVDF films subjected to uniaxial stretching. During uniaxial extension both appearance of a polar piezo active crystalline structure and significant changes in the samples morphology were observed. Variations in the PVDF films morphology, polymorphic composition, and supramolecular structure upon transformation were detected with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, wide-angle X-ray scattering, and scanning electron microscopy techniques. Broadband dielectric spectroscopy was used to ascertain a change in molecular mobility of the polymer chains during α→β phase transformation. The relaxation processes, γ-, α а -, α с -, and interfacial polarization, in both α- and β-phases of PVDF were identified in the dielectric loss spectra and described with either Arrhenius or Vogel-Fulcher-Tammann equations. The analysis of the equations parameters allowed concluding that initiation of a polymorphic α→β transition through uniaxial extension results in hindering the relaxators mobility in the β-phase of PVDF samples, except γ-relaxators. This finding confirms a proposal that γ-relaxators are located in the amorphous part of PVDF. Uniaxial extension resulted in a substantial increase in the interfacial polarization, which can be attributed to the emergence of new interface boundaries.

Abstract:The β phase stability in poly(vinylidene fluoride/trifluoroethylene) [P(VDF-TrFE)] thin films was studied below 300 K using X-ray diffraction and polarization-electric-field (P-E) hysteresis loops measurements. On as-grown samples, an irreversible partial order-disorder transformation at Tβ ∼ 250 K, namely, the β relaxation temperature, was evidenced by the appearance of an additional X-Ray diffraction peak above Tβ as well as changes on the P-E loops on heating after the first cooling. This order-disorder-like transformation which is attributed to an all-trans order to helical disorder transition is suggested to take place in defect-rich regions like crystal-amorphous interphases and/or crystalline areas with randomly distributed TrFE defect-like units.

Abstract:Piezoelectric polymers, such as polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), have an extensive range of potential applications in the field of flexible electronic devices. This study offers a comprehensive and in-depth exploration of the structural, energetic, electrical, mechanical, and piezoelectric properties of the α, β, and γ phases of PVDF, utilizing the PBE-D3 functional and other DFT functionals. Special attention is given to the impact of van der Waals (vdW) correction within the PVDF system. Through a comparison with existing literature, the influence of D3 correction on the properties of PVDF is assessed. The findings reveal that D3 correction significantly affects calculations related to PVDF's crystal structure, energy, and electronic structure, demonstrating remarkable performance, particularly in enhancing the accuracy of mechanical property computations. This research provides a novel academic perspective, yielding a profound understanding of PVDF properties, and affords a more precise theoretical foundation for its applications in electronic devices and sensors.

Abstract:Phase transition properties of the copolymer films of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and trifluoroethylene(TrFE), P(VDF-TrFE), were studied with X-ray diffraction (XRD) and polarization modulated ellipsometry (PME). XRD studies on both Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films and spin coated films exhibit conversions from ferroelectric phase to paraelectric phase at on heating and paraelectric phase to ferroelectric phase at on cooling. The presence of the ferroelectric-paraelectric phase transition is also confirmed by the PME technique for the first time in this study. PME was proved to be a very sensitive tool in the measurement of the structural changes at the nano-thickness films.

Abstract:Due to their unique structure and excellent physical properties, boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) are often used as nano-reinforcing fillers for polymeric composites. In this work, hydroxyl-modified boron nitride nanosheets (OH-BNNSs) and amino-functionalized boron nitride nanosheets (NH2-BNNSs) were blended with poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) via a solution casting method to form PVDF/OH-BNNS and PVDF/NH2-BNNS nanocomposites. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) show that the addition of OH-BNNSs has little influence on the crystal structure of PVDF, and non-polar α-crystals are mainly formed in the PVDF/OH-BNNS nanocomposites, whereas the incorporation of a small amount of NH2-BNNSs can cause exclusive formation of polar β- and γ-phases. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and FTIR reveal that there exists a stronger interaction between PVDF and NH2-BNNSs than that between PVDF and OH-BNNSs in both solid and melt states, which is responsible for the transformation of the crystalline phase and the accelerated crystallization of PVDF/NH2-BNNS nanocomposites.

Abstract:We present the potential energy surfaces of molecular chains of poly(vinylidene-fluoride) (PVDF) and its copolymer with trifluoroethylene P(VDF-TrFE) determined by ab initio calculations. Based on the activation energy, we estimate a Curie temperature for pure PVDF of about 183 °C, which is slightly higher than its melt temperature of 170 °C. The Curie temperature decreases due to introduction of TrFE monomers to PVDF, and the origin of the ferroelectric-paraelectric phase transition of P(VDF-TrFE) is a conformational change between trans and gauche in the VDF segment. No conformational change in the position of TrFE monomers is observed during the phase transition of P(VDF-TrFE), and the gauche conformation is introduced in the all-trans molecule by the TrFE monomers.

By controlling relaxation state of crystals, pure Υ crystals are induced by two kinds of mechanism including the self-seeding and self-nucleation upon cooling within 30 min. Abstract:Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF), a polymorphic material, has useful electro active properties such as piezo-, pyro-, and ferroelectric properties. The piezoelectric crystallization polymorph is the β-phase which has an all-trans (TTTT) conformation, i.e., all of its dipoles aligned in the same direction normal to the chain axis. Elongational deformation was applied to poly(vinylidene fluoride)(PVDF) / multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) nanocomposites. Its effect on the conversion of the α-phase crystals into the β-phase crystals and on the piezoelectric propertes was investigated. Elongational deformation of PVDF molecules made it easier for the CF2 groups to arrange themselves in the same conformation by reducing the steric hindrance. However, macro-deformation was dominant in the drawn films, though the interfacial interaction between the functional groups on the MWCNTs and the CF2 dipole of PVDF chains helped the conversion of α-phase. Uniform distribution of MWCNT in the electrospun films helps efficient charge accumulation at the interface between the MWCNTs and the matrix PVDF molecules. Deploarization effect occurred in the pressed film due to the excessive charge accumulation was not observed, resulting in the high conversion of α-phase into β-phase as well as the enhancement of remanent polarization and the mechanical displacement. Added MWCNT helps the film to be extended without rupturing.
