Abstract:MnO 2 offers the opportunity to advance fundamental scientific knowledge as well as contribute to eco-friendly and sustainable energy storage technologies. In the current study, we investigate the effect of Fe substitution on the hollandite structured α-MnO 2 from first principles using the GGA + D2/U formalism of the Density Functional Theory. The Fe incorporation is observed to alter the structure, electronic, and magnetic structure of MnO 2 significantly. Fe incorporation induces structural distortion by changing the unit cell from tetragonal to monoclinic and then back to tetragonal structure with increasing Fe content from 0 to 50 at.%. The Fe incorporation decreases the volume consistently with increasing the Fe content. The bandgap values did not reveal a systematic variation with increasing Fe content. All compounds were found to have an antiferromagnetic ground state after geometrical relaxation. The net magnetic moment per unit cell was found to increase with increasing Fe. The enhancement in magnetism is due to the magnetic state of Fe ions in the antiferromagnetically aligned Mn and Fe ions. Magnetic exchange coupling constants were determined using several magnetic configurations and temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility was determined using the coupling constants. All samples except pristine MnO 2 show paramagnetic susceptibility behavior in the temperature range 0–300 K while MnO 2 showed antiferromagnetic susceptibility. Curie-Weiss law was used to further study the high-temperature magnetic susceptibility behavior of α-MnO 2 .
