Abstract:Linear super-resolution microscopy via synthesis aperture approach permits fast acquisition because of its wide-field implementations, however, it has been limited in resolution because a missing spatial-frequency band occurs when trying to use a shift magnitude surpassing the cutoff frequency of the detection system beyond a factor of two, which causes ghosting to appear. Here, we propose a method of chip-based 3D nanoscopy through large and tunable spatial-frequency-shift effect, capable of covering full extent of the spatial-frequency component within a wide passband. The missing of spatial-frequency can be effectively solved by developing a spatial-frequency-shift actively tuning approach through wave vector manipulation and operation of optical modes propagating along multiple azimuthal directions on a waveguide chip to interfere. In addition, the method includes a chip-based sectioning capability, which is enabled by saturated absorption of fluorophores. By introducing ultra-large propagation effective refractive index, nanoscale resolution is possible, without sacrificing the temporal resolution and the field-of-view. Imaging on GaP waveguide material demonstrates a lateral resolution of lamda/10, which is 5.4 folds above Abbe diffraction limit, and an axial resolution of lamda/19 using 0.9 NA detection objective. Simulation with an assumed propagation effective refractive index of 10 demonstrates a lateral resolution of lamda/22, in which the huge gap between the directly shifted and the zero-order components is completely filled to ensure the deep-subwavelength resolvability. It means that, a fast wide-field 3D deep-subdiffraction visualization could be realized using a standard microscope by adding a mass-producible and cost-effective spatial-frequency-shift illumination chip.

Abstract:The recent demonstration of isolated attosecond pulses from an X-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) opens the possibility for probing ultrafast electron dynamics at X-ray wavelengths. An established experimental method for probing ultrafast dynamics is X-ray transient absorption spectroscopy, where the X-ray absorption spectrum is measured by scanning the central photon energy and recording the resultant photoproducts. The spectral bandwidth inherent to attosecond pulses is wide compared to the resonant features typically probed, which generally precludes the application of this technique in the attosecond regime. In this paper we propose and demonstrate a new technique to conduct transient absorption spectroscopy with broad bandwidth attosecond pulses with the aid of ghost imaging, recovering sub-bandwidth resolution in photoproduct-based absorption measurements.

Abstract:A combination of sub-nanosecond photoexcitation and femtosecond supercontinuum probing is used to extend femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy into the nanosecond to microsecond time domain. Employing a passively Q-switched frequency tripled Nd:YAG laser and determining the jitter of the time delay between excitation and probe pulses with a high resolution time delay counter on a single-shot basis leads to a time resolution of 350 ps in picosecond excitation mode. The time overlap of almost an order of magnitude between fs and sub-ns excitation mode permits to extend ultrafast transient absorption (TA) experiments seamlessly into time ranges traditionally covered by laser flash photolysis. The broadband detection scheme eases the identification of intermediate reaction products which may remain undetected in single-wavelength detection flash photolysis arrangements. Single-shot referencing of the supercontinuum probe with two identical spectrometer/CCD arrangements yields an excellent signal-to-noise ratio for the so far investigated chromophores in short to moderate accumulation times.

Abstract:Attosecond transient absorption spectroscopy is a recent addition to the experimental tool set of attosecond science. This all-optical method measures different observables than the previously existing techniques based on electron and ion detection and overcomes several of their limitations. We review the present state-of-the-art of attosecond transient absorption experiments and theory. Applications cover the exploration of ultrafast electron dynamics in atoms as well as in solid-state systems. As an example we discuss the observation of transiently bound electron wavepacket dynamics in helium in more detail. This example illustrates how transient absorption spectroscopy can provide information that is fundamentally inaccessible to the techniques based on ionisation, namely dynamics occurring well below the ionisation threshold. Furthermore, we show that a model based on wavepacket interference and originally developed to explain modulations in the ion yield is not sufficient to explain the observed optical response of the system. The optical response on extremely short timescales and in systems exposed to strong laser fields is still not fully understood. This makes the method also attractive for fundamental studies. Furthermore, it is expected that the technique will also find future applications for studying molecular systems in gas phase, in solution, or as solids and will greatly benefit from the advances of ultrafast lasers with multi-100-W average power improving signal-to-noise ratio by many orders of magnitude in the near future.

Abstract:Field emission of electrons underlies great advances in science and technology, ranging from signal processing at ever higher frequencies 1 to imaging of the atomic-scale structure of matter 2 with picometre resolution. The advancing of electron microscopy techniques to enable the complete visualization of matter on the native spatial (picometre) and temporal (attosecond) scales of electron dynamics calls for techniques that can confine and examine the field emission on sub-femtosecond time intervals. Intense laser pulses have paved the way to this end 3,4 by demonstrating femtosecond confinement 5,6 and sub-optical cycle control 7,8 of the optical field emission 9 from nanostructured metals. Yet the measurement of attosecond electron pulses has remained elusive. We used intense, sub-cycle light transients to induce optical field emission of electron pulses from tungsten nanotips and a weak replica of the same transient to directly investigate the emission dynamics in real time. Access to the temporal properties of the electron pulses rescattering off the tip surface, including the duration τ = (53 as ± 5 as) and chirp, and the direct exploration of nanoscale near fields open new prospects for research and applications at the interface of attosecond physics and nano-optics.

Abstract:We review the technique and research of the ultrahigh spatiotemporal resolved spectroscopy and its applications in the field of the ultrafast dynamics of mesoscopic systems and nanomaterials. Combining femtosecond time-resolved spectroscopy and scanning near-field optical microscopy (SNOM), we can obtain the spectra with ultrahigh temporal and spatial resolutions simultaneously. Some problems in doing so are discussed. Then we show the important applications of the ultrahigh spatiotemporal resolved spectroscopy with a few typical examples.

Abstract:Time-resolved electron microscopy aims at tracking nanoscale excitations and dynamic states of matter with a temporal resolution ultimately reaching the attosecond regime. Periodically time-varying fields in an illuminated specimen cause free-electron inelastic scattering, which enables the spectroscopic imaging of near-field intensities. However, access to the evolution of nanoscale fields and structures within the light cycle requires a sensitivity to the optical phase. Here, we introduce Free-Electron Homodyne Detection (FREHD) as a universally applicable approach to electron microscopy of phase-resolved optical responses at high spatiotemporal resolution. In this scheme, a phase-controlled reference interaction serves as the local oscillator to extract arbitrary sample-induced modulations of a free-electron wave function. We demonstrate this principle through the phase-resolved imaging of plasmonic fields with few-nanometer spatial and sub-cycle temporal resolutions. Due to its sensitivity to both phase- and amplitude-modulated electron beams, FREHD measurements will be able to detect and amplify weak signals stemming from a wide variety of microscopic origins, including linear and nonlinear optical polarizations, atomic and molecular resonances and attosecond-modulated structure factors.

Abstract:Abstract Simultaneous and efficient ultrafast recording of multiple photon tags contributes to high-dimensional optical imaging and characterization in numerous fields. Existing high-dimensional optical imaging techniques that record space and polarization cannot detect the photon’s time of arrival owing to the limited speeds of the state-of-the-art electronic sensors. Here, we overcome this long-standing limitation by implementing stereo-polarimetric compressed ultrafast photography (SP-CUP) to record light-speed high-dimensional events in a single exposure. Synergizing compressed sensing and streak imaging with stereoscopy and polarimetry, SP-CUP enables video-recording of five photon tags ( x, y, z : space; t : time of arrival; and ψ : angle of linear polarization) at 100 billion frames per second with a picosecond temporal resolution. We applied SP-CUP to the spatiotemporal characterization of linear polarization dynamics in early-stage plasma emission from laser-induced breakdown. This system also allowed three-dimensional ultrafast imaging of the linear polarization properties of a single ultrashort laser pulse propagating in a scattering medium.

Abstract:Abstract Cameras with extreme speeds are enabling technologies in both fundamental and applied sciences. However, existing ultrafast cameras are incapable of coping with extended three-dimensional scenes and fall short for non-line-of-sight imaging, which requires a long sequence of time-resolved two-dimensional data. Current non-line-of-sight imagers, therefore, need to perform extensive scanning in the spatial and/or temporal dimension, restricting their use in imaging only static or slowly moving objects. To address these long-standing challenges, we present here ultrafast light field tomography (LIFT), a transient imaging strategy that offers a temporal sequence of over 1000 and enables highly efficient light field acquisition, allowing snapshot acquisition of the complete four-dimensional space and time. With LIFT, we demonstrated three-dimensional imaging of light in flight phenomena with a <10 picoseconds resolution and non-line-of-sight imaging at a 30 Hz video-rate. Furthermore, we showed how LIFT can benefit from deep learning for an improved and accelerated image formation. LIFT may facilitate broad adoption of time-resolved methods in various disciplines.

Abstract:To reveal the fundamental aspects hidden behind various biological, chemical and physical phenomena, the capability of acquiring images with an ultrafast temporal resolution is indispensable and highly desired. The imaging frame rate of traditional CCD and CMOS imager usually only reaches sub-MHz, which is limited by the tradeoff between sensitivity and integration time1. The pump–probe scheme is widely applied in scientific imaging for its high-temporal resolution of pico-second level2. Recently, to film the events in chemical reactions, pump–probe combined with scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) or X-ray schemes are proposed. They can take the snapshots with enhanced resolution to femtosecond for producing true molecular movies3. However, it is only applicable for respective events, hence, falls short of capturing non-repetitive or destructive events, which count the majority in nature. To address this problem, at present, a lot of work has been carried out. By virtue of temporal and spatial dispersion, high-speed image acquisition can be realized either with time-stretched pulses4 or with split wavebands5 for frame rates of GHz and THz, respectively. But these schemes are based on dispersive Fourier transform, which limits the their achievable frame rate to THz. With compressive sensing method, compressed ultrafast photography (CUP) achieves passive imaging with up to 100-GHz frame rate in single shot, which is also applicable for fluorescence imaging6. However, the streak camera used in CUP suffers from its poor spatial resolution and quantum efficiency.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a new method to characterize the temporal structure of arbitrary optical laser pulses with low pulse energies. This approach is based on strong field photoelectron holography with the glory rescattering effect as the underlying mechanism in the near-forward direction. Utilizing the subfemtosecond glory rescattering process as a fast temporal gate to sample the unknown light pulse, the time-dependent vectorial electric field can be retrieved from the streaking photoelectron momentum spectra. Our method avoids the challenging task of generation or manipulation of attosecond pulses and signifies important progress in arbitrary optical waveform characterization.

Mapping transient electric fields with picosecond electron bunches

Abstract:Transient electric fields, which are an important but hardly explored parameter of laser plasmas, can now be diagnosed experimentally with combined ultrafast temporal resolution and field sensitivity, using femtosecond to picosecond electron or proton pulses as probes. However, poor spatial resolution poses great challenges to simultaneously recording both the global and local field features. Here, we present a direct 3D measurement of a transient electric field by time-resolved electron schlieren radiography with simultaneous 80-μm spatial and 3.7-ps temporal resolutions, analyzed using an Abel inversion algorithm. The electric field here is built up at the front of an aluminum foil irradiated with a femtosecond laser pulse at 1.9 × 10(12) W/cm(2), where electrons are emitted at a speed of 4 × 10(6) m/s, resulting in a unique "peak-valley" transient electric field map with the field strength up to 10(5) V/m. Furthermore, time-resolved schlieren radiography with charged particle pulses should enable the mapping of various fast-evolving field structures including those found in plasma-based particle accelerators.

Abstract:Single-shot ultrafast imaging reveals the transient dynamics of ultrafast phenomena. Herein, we introduce a new approach for capturing ultrafast micron-scale dynamics using an arbitrary time-wavelength-encoded biprism interferometer (TWEBI). In TWEBI, a time-wavelength-encoded pulse train is generated using a set of cascaded frequency-doubling crystals with slightly different phase-matching angles and independent delay lines, which have the advantages of independent temporal resolution, time window, and frame interval parameters. Phase measurement of TWEBI is achieved using a plug-and-play biprism interferometer. In the experiment to capture the transient dynamic of femtosecond laser-induced plasma filament, we demonstrated that the TWEBI setup can capture a total of 12 frames in a single shot, and its effective frame rate is 5 trillion frames per second (Tfps), corresponding to a temporal resolution of 200 fs and a spatial resolution of 4 μm . Moreover, the time window of the TWEBI setup can be adjusted from sub-picosecond to nanosecond timescales. Thus, TWEBI has the advantages of high-precision temporal-spatial resolution, high frame rate, adjustable time window, and no reference arm, thus providing a practical and feasible diagnostic scheme for complex transient dynamics.

Abstract:The present invention relates to the technical field of microscopic spectral imaging and analytical chemistry, and disclosed thereby are a spatial and temporal focusing-based wide field of view chromatography hyperspectral microscopic imaging method and device. The method comprises: utilizing an ultrashort pulse laser source to produce an ultrashort pulse laser; producing a focal line in a sample by means of using spatial and temporal focusing; collecting an excited fluorescent light and filtering out stray light by using a confocal optical slit; collecting fluorescence spectrum information to complete the acquisition of spectrum information (x, λ) of the sample; and finally, acquiring five-dimensional information (x, λ, y, z, t) of the sample by means of three-dimensional spatial scanning and delayed scanning. The device comprises an ultrashort pulse laser source and beam conversion system, a spatial and temporal focusing-based line scanning system, an optical microscopic system, and a confocal detection system which filters and synchronizes spectrums; the acquisition of spectrum information in the confocal detection system which filters and synchronizes spectrums is synchronized with a line scanning trigger signal in the line scanning system which combines spatial and temporal focusing technology. The present invention has the advantages of a wide field of view, high spatial resolution, high temporal resolution, high spectral resolution and the like.
