Abstract:Limited by dispersion-induced pulse overlap, the frame rate of serial time-encoded amplified microscopy is confined to the megahertz range. Replacing the ultra-short mode-locked pulse laser by a multi-wavelength source, based on waveband-division technique, a serial time stretch microscopic imaging system with a line scan rate of in the gigahertz range is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. In this study, we present a surface scanning imaging system with a record line scan rate of 2GHz and 15 pixels. Using a rectangular spectrum and a sufficiently large wavelength spacing for waveband-division, the resulting 2D image is achieved with good quality. Such a superfast imaging system increases the single-shot temporal resolution towards the sub-nanosecond regime.

Abstract:Ultrafast imaging is a powerful tool for studying space-time dynamics in photonic material, plasma physics, living cells, and neural activity. Pushing the imaging speed to the quantum limit could reveal extraordinary scenes about the questionable quantization of life and intelligence, or the wave-particle duality of light. However, previous designs of ultrafast photography are intrinsically limited by framing speed. Here, we introduce a new technique based on a multiple non-collinear optical parametric amplifier principle (MOPA), which readily push the frame rate into the area of ten trillion frames per second with higher spatial resolution than 30 line pairs per millimeter. The MOPA imaging is applied to record the femtosecond early evolution of laser-induced plasma grating in air for the first time. Our approach avoids the intrinsic limitations of previous methods, thus can be potentially optimized for higher speed and resolution, opening the way of approaching quantum limits to test the fundamentals.

Abstract:A novel approach to achieving ultrafast three-dimensional (3-D) imaging based on space-to-wavelength-to-time mapping and short-time Fourier transform (STFT) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The fundamental concept to achieve 3-D imaging is to encode the depth information of a sample by interfering two delayed pulses that are reflected from the surface of the sample and an additional reference plane on the top of the sample. The interference pattern that contains the depth information in the frequency domain is converted into the time domain based on dispersive Fourier transform and then analyzed based on STFT. Thus, ultrafast 3-D imaging is achieved. The proposed approach is experimentally evaluated. The imaging of a sample with a depth of 1.5 mm using an ultrafast pulse laser source with a beam width of similar to 2 mm at a repetition rate of 48.8 MHz is demonstrated.

Abstract:Traditional imaging technologies can neither capture ultrafast processes nor get high sensitivity in their imaging processes.This paper aims to build an ultrafast one-dimensional real-time imaging system which is based on the optical mapping and boardening technology.By the use of optical image amplification, we realize the system with both ultrafast continuous real-time imaging and high sensitivity.This system makes full use of the dispersive Fourier transform in order to simplify the construction of the system and realize the real-time image processing,while the system is based on the space-frequency mapping of the spatial grating and the frequency-time mapping of the dispersive fiber.Besides,this paper discusses not only the system measuring range but also the spatial resolution from both the grating formula and the features of the gratings and other components of the system.We get some ideal experimental results to verify the system performance.As a result,we get real-time imaging at a frame rate of 20.9 MHz,which is 4 orders of magnitude higher than that of the traditional imaging system.Our system measuring range is about 7.0 mm,while the spatial resolution can reach as low as 280.

By using hybrid dispersion laser scanning technique, we built an ultra-fast line scan microscopic imaging system with record frame rate of 1GHz. This technique is promising to be used for capturing fast process, especially non-repetitive transient phenomena.

Abstract:A wavelength division ultrafast microscopic imaging scheme is proposed and demonstrated. This scheme is based on wavelength-time-space mapping technique. And we use wavelength division to avoid temporal overlapping in optical fiber, the overlapped single frame is divided into two bands by optical filters. Thus each frame in different wavelength band can be received separately. By using this method, large dispersion fiber can be used to achieve higher resolution.

Abstract:An ultrafast single-pixel imaging scheme is proposed to improve the resolution in the vertical direction. A whole row of horizontal and vertical information for a reflecting sample is encoded onto the time, frequency and phase of a space-dispersed ultrafast mode-locked beam. The single-shot spectrum is decoded to reconstruct three-dimensional (3D) imaging by comprehensively extracting the time-frequency-phase information of the interference spectrum from a mode-locked pulse. In the proposed method, the free spectral range (FSR) and phase information are extracted based on Fourier forward and inverse transform from the temporal interferogram. With the help of comprehensive utilization of time-frequency-phase information and time-stretch technique, the imaging system with axial resolution higher than 100 nm, depth measurement range greater than 7.5 mm and 50 MHz line-scan frame rate are experimentally demonstrated.

Abstract:A high-speed microscopic imaging system based on a multiwavelength source and time-stretch technique is proposed and demonstrated. We realize an imaging system at 1D scan rate of 80 MHz with 20 resolvable points. This scheme breaks the bottleneck of large bandwidth and high repetition rate in mode-lock lasers and has great potential for imaging system integration.

Abstract:Fast microscopic imaging has greatly potential applications in biology, medical science and environment monitoring. The ability to image specimen at high speed is particularly important for inspecting a large quantity in a short period of time. CCD or CMOS cameras are conventionally used for imaging, but has limited frame rate and data throughput. In this report, time-stretch high-speed microscopic imaging systems based on temporally and spectrally shaped incoherent optical source are proposed and experimentally demonstrated. We significantly reduced the complexity of the light source by applying multi-wavelength source or amplified spontaneous noise emission (ASE) in the time-stretch microscopic imaging system. Further-more, by preprocessing the broadband spectrum, the resolution of the proposed system is better than 35 µm and the effective 1D scan rate could reach 50 MHz to 2GHz.

Abstract:Femtosecond-scale ultrafast imaging is an essential tool for visualizing ultrafast dynamics in molecular biology, physical chemistry, atomic physics, and fluid dynamics. Pump-probe imaging and a streak camera are the most widely used techniques, but they are either demanding the repetitions of the same scene or sacrificing the number of imaging dimensions. Many interesting single-shot ultrafast imaging techniques have been developed in recent years for recording non-repetitive dynamic scenes. Nevertheless, there are still weaknesses in the number of frames, the number of image pixels, or spatial/temporal resolution. Here, we present a single-shot ultrafast microscopy that can capture more than a dozen frames at a time with the frame rate of 5 THz. We combine a spatial light modulator and a custom-made echelon for efficiently generating a large number of reference pulses with designed time delays and propagation angles. The single-shot recording of the interference image between these reference pulses with a sample pulse allows us to retrieve the stroboscopic images of the dynamic scene at the timing of the reference pulses. We demonstrated the recording of 14 temporal snapshots at a time, which is the largest to date, with the optimal temporal resolution set by the laser output pulse. Our ultrafast microscopy is highly scalable in the number of frames and temporal resolutions, and this will have profound impacts on uncovering the interesting spatio-temporal dynamics yet to be explored.

Abstract:Temporal imaging is one of the most promising all-optical signal processing techniques that enable single-shot ultrafast signal characterization in both spectral and temporal domains. However, conventional temporal imaging systems have inherent constraints such as limited record length, narrow spectral observation range and complex system configuration, which prevent their potential to be fully unleashed. In this article, we review the recent efforts in developing advanced temporal imaging systems with much enhanced performance. Their powerful applications are demonstrated by real-time single-shot characterization of Kerr soliton generation in microresonator, noise-like pulses in mode-locked fiber lasers, broadband frequency combs and the dynamic waveform in ultrafast optical tomography. In addition, potential future developments of this technique in several important directions are discussed.

Abstract:Abstract Simultaneous and efficient ultrafast recording of multiple photon tags contributes to high-dimensional optical imaging and characterization in numerous fields. Existing high-dimensional optical imaging techniques that record space and polarization cannot detect the photon’s time of arrival owing to the limited speeds of the state-of-the-art electronic sensors. Here, we overcome this long-standing limitation by implementing stereo-polarimetric compressed ultrafast photography (SP-CUP) to record light-speed high-dimensional events in a single exposure. Synergizing compressed sensing and streak imaging with stereoscopy and polarimetry, SP-CUP enables video-recording of five photon tags ( x, y, z : space; t : time of arrival; and ψ : angle of linear polarization) at 100 billion frames per second with a picosecond temporal resolution. We applied SP-CUP to the spatiotemporal characterization of linear polarization dynamics in early-stage plasma emission from laser-induced breakdown. This system also allowed three-dimensional ultrafast imaging of the linear polarization properties of a single ultrashort laser pulse propagating in a scattering medium.

Abstract:A single-frame complete spatiotemporal characteristics measurement method of ultrafast laser pulses, named Carrier Frequency Division Multiplexing Spectral Interferometry (CFDMSI), is proposed and demonstrated. Based on the idea of frequency division multiplexing, the 3D spatiotemporal field E(x,y,t) of a femtosecond laser pulse can be reconstructed from a single spectral interferogram. The implementation of CFDMSI is quite simple, just fixing a slit array at the entrance of an imaging spectrometer, then injecting the unknown pulse and the reference pulse into the imaging spectrometer at a certain cross angle. By recording and analyzing a single spectral interferogram, the unknown pulse‘s spatiotemporal field in the sampling area of the slit array can be obtained. The principle and implementation of CFDMSI are introduced, and its effectiveness is verified by a demonstration experiment.

Abstract:A simple fast line scan microscopic imaging approach based on a wavelength-space-time mapping technique has been proposed. With a lab-made subpicosecond pulse laser with 10 dB bandwidth of 12 nm, we experimentally demonstrate a free-space optical apparatus designed for fast line scan imaging of microscopic objects. This system has a spatial resolution of 22 mu m, field-of-view of 2.5 mm, and line scan rate of 20.9 MHz. By imaging a modified unitraveling carrier photodetector, we demonstrate the application of semiconductor device inspection for speeding up quality control. (C) 2013 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Optical time stretch has been employed for ultrafast optical imaging based on space-to-wavelength-to-time mapping. However, temporal overlap between two adjacent time-stretched pulses is a disadvantageous factor that limits the spatial resolution, or the frame rate has to be reduced by reducing the pulse repetition rate to avoid the temporal overlap. To increase the spatial resolution without reducing the frame rate, we propose a novel technique based on polarization-division multiplexing, using a polarization modulator to generate two polarization interleaved pulse trains. Since two adjacent optical pulses are orthogonally polarized, the spacing between two adjacent pulses for one polarization direction is doubled, and the spatial resolution is doubled by using a dispersive element with two times the dispersion. The proposed approach is experimentally evaluated. An imaging system with an increased spatial resolution is demonstrated.

Abstract:Ultrafast real-time optical imaging is an indispensable tool for studying dynamical events such as shock waves, chemical dynamics in living cells, neural activity, laser surgery and microfluidics. However, conventional CCDs (charge-coupled devices) and their complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) counterparts are incapable of capturing fast dynamical processes with high sensitivity and resolution. This is due in part to a technological limitation-it takes time to read out the data from sensor arrays. Also, there is the fundamental compromise between sensitivity and frame rate; at high frame rates, fewer photons are collected during each frame-a problem that affects nearly all optical imaging systems. Here we report an imaging method that overcomes these limitations and offers frame rates that are at least 1,000 times faster than those of conventional CCDs. Our technique maps a two-dimensional (2D) image into a serial time-domain data stream and simultaneously amplifies the image in the optical domain. We capture an entire 2D image using a single-pixel photodetector and achieve a net image amplification of 25 dB (a factor of 316). This overcomes the compromise between sensitivity and frame rate without resorting to cooling and high-intensity illumination. As a proof of concept, we perform continuous real-time imaging at a frame speed of 163 ns (a frame rate of 6.1 MHz) and a shutter speed of 440 ps. We also demonstrate real-time imaging of microfluidic flow and phase-explosion effects that occur during laser ablation.

Abstract:Ultrafast compressed imaging is promising for capturing a large number of frames and providing single-shot observations of various unknown and important transient scenes. However, this technique often compromises spatial resolution in order to capture ultrafast phenomena with larger frame numbers. In this paper, a high-channel spectral-temporal active recording (H-STAR) is proposed, which achieves both femtosecond-level ultrafast imaging speed and high spatial resolution by substantially increasing the number of imaging channels. H-STAR can realize the highest spatial resolution of 101.6 lp/mm, the highest frame rate of 5.52 trillion frames per second, and the highest frame number of 120. The advantages of H-STAR, including its compact optical structure, high frame rate, large number of frames, and high imaging quality, are demonstrated through the capture of laser-induced plasma dynamics and the twice-reflection of the light spot. H-STAR enables single-shot and precise recording of ultrafast processes with both spatial and temporal complexity.
