Abstract:The original reason for the 1976 article (Demirjian and Goldstein Citation 1976 ) was to follow the landmark publication of "A new system of dental age assessment" (Demirjian et al. Citation 1973 ); one of the first reports describing maturation of the dentition based on tooth development instead of tooth eruption. The 1973 article described new tooth formation stages of seven mandibular permanent teeth, values for each stage that added up to a dental maturity score that increased with age in an S-shaped curve. The 1976 article improved on the 1973 article. The sample of dental radiographs was increased by the addition of several hundred young children and several hundred young adults to add the 97th and 3rd percentiles of the dental maturity curve. New self-weighted scores of each tooth stage were tabulated for seven teeth as well as two combinations of four teeth, so that dental maturity can be assessed using this method if a tooth is missing due to agenesis or previous extraction. Further information was detailed, such as the difference in score for age between the original and the larger sample, mean score for age for the different systems, standard deviation of the difference and the average rate of change (in score points) per year.
