Abstract:The techniques of site-directed and in-situ dating should meet two requirements.It must accurately give age value and endow with definite geological meaning. The first one can be resolved by development of modern apparatus and testing methods.While the second drives people to attach importance to the study of crystal chemistry of minerals. This paper suggests the developing possibility of chemical dating technique of EPMA and/or μ-PIXE with high spatial resolution and the non-destructive character by comparison with all other microprobe techniques, and elucidates the methods of crystal chemical study of minerals and their important function for site-directed and in-situ dating on a micrometer-scale. Then it presents an example of implication for microbeam analytical results of apparent ages and crystal chemical features of zircon from Huangtuling granulite in North Dabie Mountains.It shows that zircon is of polygenetic due to complex geological events, and the granulite-facies metamorphism was reliably confirmed at 2.050 Ga.

Abstract:The potential of multi-elevated-temperature post-IR IRSL (MET-pIRIR) dating [Li, B., Li, S.H., 2011. Luminescence dating of K-feldspar from sediments: a protocol without anomalous fading correction. Quaternary Geochronology 6, 468–479] using polymineral fine grains (FG) (4–11μm) is tested using loess samples from the Luochuan section in the Chinese Loess Plateau. Nine FG samples with ages within the last glacial–interglacial period are tested using the MET-pIRIR protocol. The MET-pIRIR results for FG are compared with both the coarse grain (63–90μm) K-feldspar MET-pIRIR dating results and the coarse grain quartz OSL dating results. The stratigraphic age of the profile also provides an independent age control. Our results indicate that the FG MET-pIRIR signals of 200°C and 250°C have negligible anomalous fading and they can give reliable ages for the Chinese loess within the last glacial–interglacial period.

Abstract:Zircon is the most widely used mineral for U Pb age determinations, and shows particular importance to a complicated geological history of a metamorphic terrain, like Dabie Shan collision orogen. Zircon from metamorphic rocks may suffer from Pb diffusion loss, metamictization caused by lattice radiation damage, overgrowth mixing and recrystallization. All of these processes would affect the accuracy and validity of zircon ages to some extent. In order to get geological meaningful ages, one must pay particular attention to mineral genesis and texture of zircons, and decide firmly zircon genetic process through internal structure observation, especially CL and BSE image before zircon U Pb dating. The selection of reasonable common Pb correction, reasonable measured 204 Pb value and simple genetic zircon is preferred for TIMS dating. Here, we emphasize the advantage of SIMS dating technology in Dabie orogen research.
Calcium isotopes tracing secondary mineral formation in the high-relief Yalong River Basin, Southeast Tibetan Plateau

Abstract:Calcium is a critical element in the global carbon cycle due to its role in carbon sequestration via silicate weathering and carbonate formation. Here we apply calcium (δ44/40Ca) and strontium (87Sr/86Sr) isotopes to explore such chemical weathering processes in a river system draining a diverse range of geologic and climatic environments: the Yalong River, China, and its tributaries. This river originates on the Tibetan Plateau and represents one of the upper reaches of the Changjiang River, China. The Ca isotopic composition of the dissolved load of the Yalong River ranges from 0.60‰ to 1.02‰ (relative to the NIST standard SRM 915a). Higher δ44/40Ca values were found in the plateau and lowland rivers, with lower values in the mountainous rivers. Correlations between riverine dissolved δ44/40Ca values, Sr/Ca ratios, and calcite saturation index indicate that the precipitation of secondary carbonates governs the Ca isotopic composition and carbon transformation in most of this river system. However, such correlations are not seen in the lowland tributaries, where the relationship between δ44/40Ca and lithium (Li) isotopes instead suggests a control by topography and climate, via secondary clay mineral formation. Specifically, heavy rainfall in the lowland regions lowers the pH of the soil solution, which inhibits the precipitation of secondary carbonates. In addition, the flat terrain and thick soils increase the time for water-rock interaction, which favours the formation of secondary clay minerals that preferentially incorporate the lighter Ca isotopes. Overall, this study highlights the potential of stable Ca isotopes, when used in combination with other isotope systems (e.g. Sr and Li isotopes), to quantify secondary mineral formation processes in large river basins.

Abstract:High-resolution XRF scanning is widely used on marine and lake sediment cores as a means of rapidly acquiring elemental concentrations from closely spaced intervals with no damage to the samples. Therefore, guidance on how to obtain reliable datasets and select suitable step sizes for different geological media are of great importance. Here we apply this efficient analytical method to loess, stalagmite, and tridacna samples. The results show that 11 elements (Al, Si, K, Ca, Ti, Mn, Fe, Rb, Sr, Zr and Ba), 8 elements (Ca, Si, K, Fe, Cu, Ni, Sc and Sr) and 7 elements (Ca, Sr, Cu, Fe, Sc, Ni and Si) can be robustly detected by this method for loess, stalagmite and tridacna archives respectively, demonstrating the capacity to reconstruct high-resolution paleoclimate change. For loess cores, efficiency emission decay of the X-ray tube, water content, matrix, and grain size effects are the main factors influencing elemental intensities. The efficiency emission decay of the X-ray tube, scanning path, scanning interval, and radiation area have a significant effect on element intensities of stalagmite and tridacna samples. Based on our investigations, we suggest optimal resolutions for scanning these three archives for millennial to seasonal-scale paleoclimatic reconstructions. We compare our analyses with existing results from traditional (discrete) analyses, demonstrating similar scales of variability. Our results suggest that geochemical proxies measured by XRF scanning, such as Rb/Sr, Zr/Rb, and Ca/Ti ratio of loess and the Sr/Ca ratio of speleothem and tridacna, can be effectively used to reconstruct high-resolution paleoclimate changes. Abstract:Linking geological and biological events requires a robust geochronologic framework, which is especially challenging for poorly fossiliferous Precambrian strata. Although this can be achieved through zircon U-Pb dating, only maximum or minimum ages can typically be obtained, with rare interbedded volcanic ash beds providing precise depositional ages. U-Pb dating of authigenic carbonates could potentially become a more widely applicable geochronometer, but only if carbonate minerals can be dated with sufficient precision. A renaissance in carbonate U-Pb geochronology, utilizing the in situ laser ablation method, has opened new doors in the application of this method to geological problems. Here we apply laser ablation U-Pb dating to carbonate-rich sedimentary strata of likely Meso-Neoproterozoic age on the southeastern margin of the North China Craton, resulting in two meaningful U-Pb ages of 1036 ± 45 Ma and 1010 ± 36 Ma (2σ), from early diagenetic fine-grained microspar samples. As well as being mutually consistent, these new ages show that precision approaching the limiting uncertainty of the reference material used (∼2.5% 2σ) can be achieved. Success in this study holds promise for dating other key Precambrian successions.

Then three typical theoretical model: arithmetic mean approach, geometric mean approach and energy minimizing approach are summed up. Abstract:1 QUESTION FORMULATION Time and space are the two basic axes to characterize the existence of matter. Without time, there would be no rate ("No dates, No rates"). The Earth has a history of approximately 4.5 billion years, leaving behind a myriad of geological records, and the geologic timeline is the only common language avail-able to unravel the evolutionary history of the Earth. In the past two hundred years, geoscientists from all over the world have been working to explore approaches to reconstruct the evolu-tionary history of Earth. The emergence of the principle of fau-nal succession in the 18th century provided an important theo-retical means for the construction of geologic timescales (Sch-neer and Yochelson, 1989). By the 1960s, the study of stratigra-phy and geochronology has reached a new stage due to the technological advancement and multidisciplinary approach that integrated lithostratigraphy, cyclostratigraphy, chemostratigra-phy, magnetostratigraphy and geochronology. Subsequently, the International Commission on Stratigraphy (ICS) was found-ed on demand to resolve the discrepancies in the demarcation and classification of chronostratigraphy by different regions, experts, and methods. The ICS aims to establish a universal standard chronostratigraphy for intercontinental and regional correlations, i.e., geologic timescales.

Abstract:The progresses in chemical separation and mass spectrometric measurement for Lu-Hf isotopic system in geological samples since 1980 have been reviewed in this paper. Three measurement systems of TIMS, hot-SIMS and MC-ICP-MS with their sample treatments and instrumental determinations have been discussed. The review suggests that MC-ICP-MS is the prospective technique for Lu-Hf isotopic system and Eichrom Ln-Spec resin is an effective medium for chemical separation and Lu-Hf isotopic system will provide an important tool in research on geological chronology. 46 references are also cited.
Age-Dating of Foliage and Soil Organic Matter: Aligning 228Th:228Ra and 7Be:210Pb Radionuclide Chronometers over Annual to Decadal Time Scales

Abstract:The 228Th:228Ra ratios of foliage and organic soil horizons evolve with time following a predictable radioactive decay law and thus provide a new chronometer for absolute age-dating of plant and soil organic matter. Preferential uptake of 228Th (t0.5 = 1.9 years) and 228Ra (t0.5 = 5.9 years) by canopy tree species, ferns, and mosses, drives disequilibrium in the 232Th-228Ra-228Th radioactive decay series within forest vegetation and organic soils. With examples from northeastern USA, we verify a new 228Th:228Ra age model by demonstrating its concordance with the fallout radionuclide chronometer 7Be:210Pb in the 0 to 5-year time frame [R2 = 0.87, RMSE = 0.5 years]. At our locality, canopy tree species assimilate 228Th with a typical initial ratio (228Th:228Ra)0 ∼ 0.3, but in several instances, both deciduous and coniferous tree species show a preference for Th over Ra with (228Th:228Ra)0 exceeding 5. While the 228Th:228Ra system is restricted to organic soil horizons, concordance of 228Th:228Ra with established 7Be:210Pb and 241Am bomb-pulse chronometers establishes a coherent age-dating system of soil organic matter based on three independent chronometers and five particle reactive metals, and spanning 0-200 years in time scale that encompasses both organic and mineral soils to depths of up to 30 cm. Concordance indicates that these metals all follow common processes of organometallic colloid formation and migration and, in conjunction with 14C, may open new opportunities to understand soil pedogenic processes that regulate the storage of carbon and atmospheric metals such as Pb and Hg.

Abstract:Conclusions based on audio-visual similarity degrees of the distribution patterns of trace elements and rare earth elements in different geological objects are subject to individual researcher`s subjectivity and thus may have low reliability. Through two examples (the Beiya gold deposit in Yunnan Province and metamorphic rocks at Xiangshan in Jiangxi Province), by means of Q-type cluster analysis and fuzzy cluster analysis on trace elements and REE data and in combination with spidergram, the source of metallogenetic materials for the Beiya gold deposit in Yunnan Province and the stratigraphic designation of metamorphic rocks at Xiangshan in Jiangxi Province are discussed respectively in this paper. Using these analyses, we are able to obtain much finer geochemical information with significant geological implications hidden in the spidergram. Thus more strict and objective conclusions with scientific duplicity may be drawn when this method is used.
The Possibility of Using the Δ 13C Sequence of Α-Cellulose of the Annual Ring Buried Ancient Timbers As Substituting Indices for Paleo-climate Change Research

Abstract:The tree-ring α-cellulose △δ 13C sequences of various sorts of buried ancient timber belonging to different epochs and different tree species in Guangdong Province were respectively measured. The analyses show that the δ 13C of ancient Cinnamomum camphora trees and ancient Idesia polycarpa trees which grew in a relatively warm and humid environment was more positive than the δ 13C of the trees which grew in a relatively cool and dry environment. Here are some conclusions: (1) the ancient Idesia polycarpa trees reflect the cool climate after the ice age;(2) the ancient Cinnamomum camphora trees reflect humid climate in tropical region during the mid- Holocene; and (3) the death of ancient Glyptostrobus pensilis trees in large quantities reflect several cold events during the late-Holocene and some other historic periods. These conclusions indicate the possibility of using the tree-ringδ 13C α-cellulose sequence of the buried ancient timber as the substituting index for paleo-climate change research in the tropical zone. The contrast between ancient times and modern ages has enriched the contents of dendro-climatology.
Radiocarbon Dating of Individual Lignin Phenols: a New Approach for Establishing Chronology of Late Quaternary Lake Sediments.

Abstract:The reliability of chronology is a prerequisite for meaningful paleoclimate reconstructions from sedimentary archives. The conventional approach of radiocarbon dating bulk organic carbon in lake sediments is often hampered by the old carbon effect, i.e., the assimilation of ancient dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) derived from carbonate bedrocks or other sources. Therefore, radiocarbon dating is ideally performed on organic compounds derived from land plants that use atmospheric CO(2) and rapidly delivered to sediments. We demonstrate that lignin phenols isolated from lake sediments using reversed phase high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) can serve as effective (14)C dating materials for establishing chronology during the late Quaternary. We developed a procedure to purify lignin phenols, building upon a published method. By isolating lignin from standard wood reference substances, we show that our method yields pure lignin phenols and consistent ages as the consensus ages and that our procedure does not introduce radiocarbon contamination. We further demonstrate that lignin phenol ages are compatible with varve counted and macrofossil dated sediment horizons in Steel Lake and Fayetteville Green Lake. Applying the new method to lake sediment cores from Lake Qinghai demonstrates that lignin phenol ages in Lake Qinghai are consistently younger than bulk total organic carbon (TOC) ages which are contaminated by old carbon effect. We also show that the age offset between lignin and bulk organic carbon differs at different Lake Qinghai sedimentary horizons, suggesting a variable hard water effect at different times and that a uniform age correction throughout the core is inappropriate.
Direct dating rodingitization in the northern North China Craton using garnet U–Pb geochronometry

Abstract:The formation of rodingites has been a continually controversial topic, largely due to the absence of minerals that can be unambiguously dated. Here, we present a case study that utilized LA‐ICPMS garnet U–Pb dating, in conjunction with field investigations, petrology and Raman spectroscopy, to reveal the age and petrogenesis of rodingite in the northern North China Craton. The rodingites are spatially associated with mafic and alkaline rocks. Our findings indicate that rodingitization occurred at ca. 388 Ma, making it about 5–10 Myr younger than its mafic protoliths, but contemporaneous with the adjoining alkaline plutons. These observations suggest that the rodingitization may be attributed to hydrothermal fluids from the alkaline magmas. Our study emphasizes the importance of utilizing garnet U–Pb dating to determine the timing of rodingitization and introduces a novel perspective on the relationship between rodingitization and alkaline magmas in extensional continental settings.

The Minerageny of Two Groups of Zircons from Plagioclase- Amphibolite of Mayuan Group in Northern Fujian

Abstract:Zircons can crystallize in a wide range of physical and chemical conditions. At the same time, they have high stability and durability. Therefore zircons can grow and survive in a variety of geological processes. In addition, the diffusivity of chemical compositions in their crystals is very low. Consequently,we can trace back the evolution history of the planetary materials containing zircon with zircon U-Th-Pb geochronology and geochemistry studies. However, this depends on our ability to decipher its genesis, namely magmatic or metamorphic origins. In this paper, magmatic and metamorphic zircons were found from plagioclase-amphibolite samples. Their geneses have been determined by zircon morphology, chemical composition zonations and geological field setting combined with their zircon U-Th-Pb ages. We have found obvious differences in micro-scale Raman spectra between these magmatic and metamorphic zircons. The magmatic zircons exhibit a high sloping background in their Raman spectra, but the metamorphic zircons exhibit a low horizontal background in their Raman spectra, which suggest that the magmatic zircons may contain a much higher concentration of fluorescent impurities than the metamorphic zircons. Moreover, reverse variation trends in Raman spectrum peak intensities from core to rim of a crystal between the magmatic and metamorphic zircons have been found. We think that this can be attributed to their reverse chemical composition zonations. These differences can be used to distinguish magmatic and metamorphic zircons.

Abstract:Organisms and time are important factors for rock weathering to form soils. However, weathering time is usually difficult to quantitatively study, and the potential microorganisms involved in rock weathering are difficult to identify qualitatively. Currently, there is no clear conclusion on how ecological strategies of carbonatite weathering rind microorganisms change with weathering time, and how the microbial composition and functional genes involved in element cycling change over two century-scale weathering time. In this study, we selected abandoned carbonate tombstones as the subject and used the date when the tombstones were erected by humans as the onset of weathering. Using metagenome sequencing methods, we investigated the trends in the composition of fungal, bacterial and archaeal communities of carbonate weathering rind and related elemental cycle functional genes during a weathering time of 19 to 213 years. The results showed that: (1) with the increase in weathering time, at the phylum level, microbial taxa gradually shifted from r-strategists (faster turnover rates, higher mortality rates, higher reproduction, lower competition rate) to K-strategists (slower turnover rates, lower mortality rates, lower reproduction, higher competition rate), which correspondingly increased the abundance of functional genes related to C and N cycles. (2) The properties of the parent rock layer determines the colonization and distribution of weathering rind microorganisms (especially prokaryotic microorganisms) and the corresponding functional gene abundance. Our study provides new insights into the weathering process of carbonate rocks.

A New Method for Loess Chronology by Microcodium Δ18o and Its Application to the Mangshan Section

Abstract:Mangshan section is a scarce and valuable high-sedimentation deposit at the southeastern margin of the Chinese Loess Plateau for high-resolution paleoclimate reconstructions. Although the chronology of the deposit above the paleosol layer S2 has been pinned down on the glacial-interglacial timescale, it still needs to be refined at orbital timescale, especially at the boundary from loess layer L2 to paleosol layer S1. In the age model by correlation of loess grain size with the benthic oxygen isotope (δ18O) records, the lack of paleosol and low magnetic susceptibility during the marine isotope stage 5e are substantially different from the observations in other loess-paleosol sequences on the Chinese Loess Plateau. Here, we analyzed the oxygen isotope composition of microcodium from the upper loess layer L2 and paleosol layer S1 of the Mangshan section to reconstruct the oxygen isotopic stratigraphy. Comparing it with the absolute-dating speleothem δ18O record, we suggest corresponding the paleosol layer S1 to the last interglacial, which is consistent with other loess-paleosol sequences on the Chinese Loess Plateau. Our study provides a new method for the loess chronology by tuning the microcodium δ18O record to the absolute-dating speleothem δ18O record.
Tree-ring lignin proxies in Larix gmelinii forest growing in a permafrost area of northeastern China: Temporal variation and potential for climate reconstructions

Abstract:The hydrogen and carbon stable isotope ratios (δ2HLM and δ13CLM values) of tree-ring lignin methoxy groups have recently been recognized as valuable palaeoclimate indicators. However, the environmental factors but also sample preparation processes that might cause variations of δ2HLM and δ13CLM values have been not fully explored. Furthermore, the temporal dynamics of wood lignin content on both isotopes hasn't been investigated. To investigate the effects of total lignin content, removal of lipids and differences between individual and pooled tree-ring series on isotopic values, we analyzed ring samples of dominant Larix gmelinii trees from a typical permafrost region of northeastern China. We also examined relationships between δ2HLM and δ13CLM values with annual-resolution lignin content and climatic parameters over the common period of overlap 1901 to 2013. We found that the inter-tree variability between the individual and pooled isotopic chronologies was consistent, and the removal of lipids did not change the results of stable isotope measurements. The total lignin content shifted between the heartwood and sapwood, whereas the content of guaiacyl monomers (G-lignin), the only donor of methoxy groups, remained constant. Correlations analysis between lignin proxies and climate variables indicated that the heartwood total lignin content was positively correlated with the intrinsic water-use efficiency, temperature and vapor-pressure deficit (VPD), but negatively with the early-growing-season standardized precipitation evaporation index. Whilst δ2HLM values were positively correlated with the growing season temperature (May to August) and VPD, particularly in August, δ13CLM series showed insignificant correlation. Therefore, we suggest that the total lignin content and δ2HLM values of tree rings (both individual and pooled series) are suitable for tracking environment dynamics, as they can reveal the climate responses of tree growth.
