Abstract:The Central Asian Orogenic Belt represents a Late Paleozoic archipelago, but crustal growth and the reworking and exhumation of the individual microcontinental massifs remain poorly constrained. Here, we use the Axi epithermal deposit to examine continental preservation and exhumation in the Central Asian Orogenic Belt of the Chinese Western Tianshan region. Zircon U–Pb dating and geochemistry demonstrate that the andesitic host rock formed via the incremental addition of magma in an Andean-type magmatic arc setting at 362, 354 and 342 Ma. Pyrite Re–Os data and textural evidence reveal two mineralization events at 355 and 332 Ma. Zircon (U–Th)/He data reveal temperatures of c. 180°C until 317.8 ± 9.8 Ma, which is interpreted to record the timing of exhumation of the andesite and gold ore bodies prior to their burial by Carboniferous-age sediments. Further sedimentary concealment continued until the Late Mesozoic when the system was re-exhumed between 148.6 ± 8.6 and 120.0 ± 13 Ma at a rate of c. 9.8 m Ma −1 , as shown by apatite (U–Th)/He data. Collectively, the geochronology/thermochronology data show that the Chinese Western Tianshan region records a transition from compressional to extensional tectonism during the Late Paleozoic and Late Mesozoic. The shallow epithermal mineralization was protected from erosion by post-mineralization deposition. Carboniferous-Permian Tectonic Transition Envisaged in Two Magmatic Episodes at the Kuruer Cu-Au Deposit, Western Tianshan (NW China)

Abstract:The Western Tianshan in NW China is one of the most important gold provinces in the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB). The recently discovered Kuruer Cu-Au deposit has been interpreted to represent a transition from high-sulfidation epithermal to porphyry mineralization system. In this study, we present new LA-ICP-MS zircon U-Pb ages for the many magmatic rock types at Kuruer, including the Dahalajunshan Formation andesitic tuff (333.2 +/- 1.6 Ma), diorite porphyry (269.7 +/- 2.0 Ma), slightly-altered (264.4 +/- 2.6 Ma) and intensively-altered (270.5 +/- 2.5 Ma) albite porphyry. These ages reveal two distinct magmatic episodes: The Early Carboniferous Dahalajunshan Formation (wall rocks) andesitic tuff samples contain narrow ranges of SiO2 (60.29-61.28 wt.%), TiO2 (0.96-0.98 wt.%), Al2O3 (16.55-16.57 wt.%) and Fe2O3T. (5.36-5.57 wt.%). The tuff is characterized by LREE enrichment and HFSE depletion, as well as LREE/HREE enrichment ((La/Yb)(N) = 8.31-8.76) and negative Eu anomalies (delta Eu = 0.64-0.76). Zircon epsilon(Hf) (t) values are 5.4-8.2, and two stage Hf model ages (T-DM2) are 821-1016 Ma, indicating partial melting of a moderately depleted mantle wedge with Precambrian continental crustal input. The ore-forming Middle Permian diorite porphyry and (quartz) albite porphyry have variable major oxide compositions (e.g., SiO2 = 53.09-53.12 wt.% for the diorite porphyry, 70.84-78.03 wt.% for the albite porphyry, and 74.07-75.03 wt.% for the quartz albite porphyry) but similar chondrite-normalized REE and primitive mantle-normalized multi-element patterns. These porphyries display LREE enrichment and HFSE depletion, as well as elevated LREE/HREE enrichment and negative Eu anomalies. The positive zircon epsilon(Hf)(t) values (11.7-15.9 for the diorite porphyry, 8.9-14.9 for the albite porphyry) and young two-stage Hf model ages (T-DM2) (282-542 Ma for the diorite porphyry, 337-717 Ma for the albite porphyry) indicate a major juvenile continental crustal involvement. We propose that the Carboniferous and Middle Permian magmatism was formed in a continental arc and post-collisional settings, respectively, with the latter episode responsible for the Cu-Au mineralization.
Geology and Geochemistry of the Early Permian Axi Low-Sulfidation Epithermal Gold Deposit in North Tianshan (NW China)

Abstract:The Axi gold deposit containing 12 Mt of ore with an average Au grade of 5 g/t is the largest low-sulfidation epithermal gold deposit in Chinese Tianshan. It is hosted by Late Devonian to Early Carboniferous continental arc volcanic rocks in the Tulasu volcanic-sedimentary Basin in North Tianshan (NW China). The orebody is controlled by annular and radial faults associated with volcanic crater, and later NW-trending faults. Four stages of ore-formation could be identified based on petrographic studies: (I) chalcedony; (II) gold-bearing pyrite-quartz veins and breccias; (III) gold-bearing marcasite-quartz-carbonate veins; and (IV) quartz +/- barite-calcite veins. Electrum precipitated in stage II (285-195 degrees C, logfS(2) = -6.7 to -13) and stage III (190-95 degrees C, logfS(2) = -15.8 to -25.6). The chalcedony formed in stage I is strongly enriched in LREE (La/Yb = 4.5-36.2) compared with later gold-bearing pyrite-quartz veins and quartz +/- barite-calcite veins (La/Yb = 1.2-2.0). O-H isotopic data indicate that fluid mixing is a major mechanism causing electrum precipitation in stage II. Hydrothermal breccias consisting of chalcedony, altered wall-rocks and gold-bearing pyrite-quartz veins (stage II) are cemented by gold-bearing marcasite-quartz-carbonate assemblages (stage III), which implies that brecciation plays an important role in stage III ore-formation. Re-Os isotopic analyses of gold-bearing pyrite samples yield an Re-187/Os-188-Os-187/Os-188 isochron age of 299 +/- 35 Ma with an initial Os-187/Os-188 ratio of 0.57 +/- 0.37. K-Ar ages of four intensively sericitized andesitic wall rocks range between 286 and 293 Ma. These Early Permian ages are much younger than the Late Devonian-Early Carboniferous host volcanic rocks, but overlap the age range of postcollisional granitoid in the Tulasu Basin. The Re-Os isotopic compositions and the ages suggest that mantle-derived components were involved in the Axi ore-forming system in a postcollisional setting. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:The eastern North China Craton is characteristic of Mesozoic cratonic destruction and largescale gold mineralization. Previous geochronological studies by 40Ar-39Ar dating on alteration minerals such as sericite and K-feldspar and Rb-Sr and 40Ar-39Ar dating on quartz and pyrite suggested that the gold mineralization occurred in Early Cretaceous. We have identified hydrothermal zircons from the orebody and alterated rocks in the Xiadian gold deposit, Jiaodong Peninsula. These zircons contain two phase (vapor-liquid) fluid inclusions or enclose hydrothermal alteration minerals such as sericite. They show homogeneous low CL-response image and have high U with low Th/U, and also show enriched and flatter normalized LREE pattern with high La and low (Sm/La)(N) and Ce/Ce* relative to magmatic zircons. Their petrographical, textural and compositional features strongly suggest that they mainly crystallized from the hydrothermal fluids during the pyrite-sericite-quartz alteration that was closely related to the gold mineralization. Direct LA-ICP-MS U-Pb dating on such hydrothermal zircons indicates that the gold mineralization in the Xiadian deposit mainly occurred during the Paleocene and underwent a prolonged metallogenic process (68.7-56.7 Ma), most likely commenced at the end of Cretaceous and lasted at the end of Paleocene. In-situ Hf isotopic compositions of the hydrothermal and inherited zircons suggest that the ore-forming fluids might have been derived from an enriched lithospheric mantle, followed by interacting with Archean metamorphic basement during ascent. Such a gold mineralization event might have been associated with the early Cenozoic uppermost lithospheric thinning in eastern North China Craton. It has important implications for further understanding the geneses and the geodynamics of gold deposits in the whole eastern North China Craton.
From Magma Replenishment to Epithermal Mineralization: Combined Evidence from Zircon U-Pb, (U-Th)/he and Trace Element Data

Abstract:The Dahalajunshan Formation volcano-volcanoclastic rocks in Chinese Western Tianshan host specific Paleozoic epithermal gold deposits as well as volcanogenic Fe-Cu mineralization. Although numerous studies have been taken to constraint its geological, geochemical, geochronological features as well as petrogenesis, the link between volcanism and mineralization is not well constrained. In this contribution, accessory zircon was collected from the intermediate to felsic volcanic rocks outcropped at the Jingxi-Yelmand gold deposit. Detailed cathodoluminescence imaging illustrates ubiquitous resorption surfaces and embayments, and in situ LA-ICPMS trace element analysis further indicates periodic recharge of magma chamber by mafic magma input from depths. UPb geochronology constrains two main pulses of magmatism at similar to 370 Ma and 365-362 Ma, respectively. The duration of magmatic activity in the magma chamber is estimated to 52 +/- 6 Myrs, using the U-Pb age of the oldest zircon antecryst (406.9 +/- 5.4 Ma) and the youngest zircon autocryst (354.6 +/- 3.0 Ma) as cutting edge and taking the analytical uncertainty into consideration. (U-Th)/He dating of zircon from the first pulse yields an age of 354 +/- 15 Ma, which is identical to U-Pb age within analytical uncertainty. However, zircons from the second pulse of volcanic rocks yield much younger (U-Th)/He centered at 292.6 +/- 7.6 Ma due to significant post-eruption reheating events. We propose that the intermediate to acid volcanic rocks are constructed by incremental addition of small magma batches. The periodic injection of more mafic magma and subsequent mixing may act as important trigger of not only volcanic eruption but also epithermal mineralization. Gold mineralization at the deposit should be no later than 292.6 Ma.
Petrogenesis and timing of emplacement of porphyritic monzonite, dolerite, and basalt associated with the Kuoerzhenkuola Au deposit, Western Junggar, NW China: implications for early Carboniferous tectonic setting and Cu–Au mineralization prospectivity

Abstract:The Kuoerzhenkuola epithermal Au deposit is located in the northern part of the West Junggar region of NW China and is underlain by a recently discovered porphyritic monzonite intrusion that contains Cu–Au mineralization. Zircon LA-ICP-MS U–Pb dating of this intrusion yielded an age of 350 ± 4.7 Ma. The porphyritic monzonite is calc-alkaline and is characterized by high concentrations of Sr (583–892 ppm), significant depletions in the heavy rare earth elements (HREE; e.g. Yb = 0.96–2.57 ppm) and Y (10.4–23.3 ppm), and primitive mantle-normalized multi-element variation diagram patterns with positive Sr and Ba and negative Nb and Ti anomalies, all of which indicate that this intrusion is compositionally similar to adakites elsewhere. The composition of the porphyritic monzonite is indicative of the derivation from magmas generated by the melting of young subducted slab material. The area also contains Nb-enriched basalts that are enriched in sodium (Na2O/K2O = 1.20–3.90) and have higher Nb, Zr, TiO2, and P2O5 concentrations and Nb/La and Nb/U ratios than typical arc basalts. The juxtaposition of adakitic rocks, Nb-enriched basalts, and dolerites in this region suggests that the oceanic crust of the expansive oceans within the West Junggar underwent early Carboniferous subduction. Magnetite is widespread throughout the Kuoerzhenkuola Au deposit, as evidenced by the volcanic breccias cemented by late hydrothermal magnetite and pyrite. In addition, the zoned potassic, quartz-sericite alteration, and propylitic and kaolin alteration in the deeper parts of the porphyritic monzonite are similar to those found in porphyry Cu–Au deposits. These findings, coupled with the mineralogy and geochemistry of the alteration associated with the Kuoerzhenkuola Au deposit, suggest that the mineralization in this area is not purely epithermal, with the geology and geochemistry of the porphyritic monzonite in this area suggesting that a porphyry Cu–Au deposit is probably located beneath the Kuoerzhenkuola Au deposit.

Abstract:The Axi deposit is the largest low-sulfidation epithermal gold deposit in Chinese Western Tianshan, Central Asian Orogenic Belt. In this contribution, combined petrological observations, electron microprobe analysis (EMPA) and X-ray backscattered electron images (BSE) have been conducted on Fe-S-As minerals to reveal their textural and compositional evolution. Pyrite and arsenopyrite are ubiquitous. Their texture and composition show gradual changes with time. Four generations of pyrite can be identified, named Py1, Py2, Py3 and Py4 from early to late. The coarse-grained, euhedral to subhedral Py1 (mostly 100-300 mu m) from the quartz-chalcedony stage is the earliest, and predates gold mineralization. Sometimes they contain silicate and arsenopyrite (Apy) inclusions. Compositionally, they are enriched in Pb (up to 0.60 wt%), but depleted in As (0.06-7.61 wt%, mostly < 0.30 wt%) and Au (0.01 wt%-0.25 wt%, mostly < 0.10 wt%). Subhedral to anhedral Py2 grains (50-1000 mu m) coexist with other sulfides such as chalcopyrite, sphalerite, galena and tetrahedrite in the quartzpolymetallic sulfides stage. They are unusually rich in Au (with a mean value of 0.06 wt%), Ag (with a mean value of 0.04 wt%), Cu (with a mean value of 0.21 wt%) and As (with a mean value of 3.06 wt%), implying a synmineralization feature. Subsequent Py3 occurs as very fine-grained disseminations of euhedral crystals (10-50 mu m) in quartz-polymetallic sulfides stage and carbonate-quartz stage. They display clear oscillatory zoning and contain arsenopyrite (Apy3), sphalerite and Sb-Te mineral inclusions. Their Au content vary greatly from 0.02 wt% to 1.02 wt%, with corresponding As content varying from 0.07 wt% to 8.28 wt%. The postmineralization Py4 crystals (30-5000 mu m) mainly occur as foliated, sheaf, or radiaxial aggregates in carbonatequartz stage. They have the lowest Au (with a mean value of 0.04 wt%), As (with a mean value of 0.32 wt%), Co (with a mean value of 0.04 wt%) and Ni (with a mean value of 0.04 wt%) concentrations, although dramatically high S contents (with a mean value of 52.72 wt%). Correspondingly, there are three generations of arsenopyrite: Apy1 (20-50 mu m) and Apy3 (3-15 mu m) mainly occur as inclusions in Py1 and Py3, respectively, whereas the latest Apy4 ( < 5-60 mu m) can occur either as serrated grains surrounding Py4 or overgrowth Py1 and Py3, or as individual euhedral to sub-euhedral grains. They also contain considerable, but much higher Au contents than pyrite, with the values of 0.6 wt%-1.1 wt% for Apy1, 0.18 wt%-1.32 wt% for Apy3 and 0.50 wt%-1.75 wt% for Apy4, respectively. Besides, they also contain considerable amounts of trace elements such as Co, Zn, Pb, Sb and Se. Arsenopyrite geothermometer constrains the ore-forming temperature responsible for Apy3 formation to 325-385 degrees C. Our result reveals that significant invisible gold accommodated by sulfides is the main cause of refractory ores at the Axi deposit.

Abstract:The Bilihe large-scale porphyry gold deposit locates in the Early Paleozoic accretionary orogenic belt of the northern margin of North China Craton.The lithology in Bilihe goldfield was the set of volcanic rocks which include andesite,dacite and rhyolite.The andesite belongs to sub-alkaline,high-K calc-alkaline series,with higher content of MgO(2.05%～10.29%) ,low FeOT/MgO ratio and the content of TiO2(0.21%～0.85%) and with high content of Cr(44×10-6～473×10-6) ,Ni(19.3×10-6～249.4×10-6) ,depleted Nb,Ta,Ti,P,absence or minor of Eu/Eu anomalies,which collectively indicated the andesite with the characteristics of volcanic rocks of typical Andean-type active continental margin.The weighted average 206Pb/238U ages of andesite and andesitic tuff were 281±4.3Ma and 281±12Ma(the Early Permian) ,by LA-ICP-MS zircon U-Pb dating respectively,and consistent with the crystallization age(279Ma) of granodiorite porphyry that related to gold mineralization and ore-forming age(272Ma) ,which indicated that diagenesis-metallogenesis of mining area was associated with collisional orogeny between the North China plate and the Siberian plate in the Late Paleozoic,and suggesting that it had the great potential to find Late Paleozoic epithermal-porphyry type gold(copper) deposits in northern margin of the North China Craton.U-Pb ages of the ancient inherited zircons presents in the volcanic rocks and intrusive rocks associated with mineralization were 1.8Ga,2.0Ga and 2.4Ga,implying that the mining area was presence of ancient basement of the North China Craton,and as a major factor in generating gold mineralization.
Genesis of the Zaozigou gold deposit, West Qinling orogen, China: Constraints from sulfide trace element and stable isotope geochemistry

Abstract:The West Qinling orogen, central China is endowed with dozens of world-class sediment-hosted gold deposits, most of which have formed from metamorphic fluids released from Paleozoic sedimentary rocks during the Triassic collisional orogeny. Here we present trace element and sulfur isotope data of gold-bearing pyrite and arsenopyrite, along with oxygen and hydrogen isotopes of ore-related sericite, to show that the Early Triassic Zaozigou gold deposit (142 t) in the Xiahe-Hezuo district may have contrasting origin. Gold mineralization at Zaozigou is dominated by fine-grained pyrite and arsenopyrite disseminations (Py1 and Asp1) in hydrothermally altered Triassic flysch and, less significantly, in Early Triassic granitoid dike swarm. The disseminated ores are overprinted by quartz-sulfide-ankerite-sulfide vein/veinlets, which contain less abundant, coarser pyrite and arsenopyrite (Py2 and Asp2) and are less economically significant. Gold occurs as invisible gold in fine-grained arsenian pyrite and arsenopyrite of the disseminated ores, with subordinate native gold grains locally observed in the quartz-sulfide-ankerite vein/veinlets. The two types of pyrite (Py1 vs. Py2) and arsenopyrite (Asp1 vs. Asp2) are consistently enriched in As, Au, Co, Ni, Mn, Cu, Zn, Ag, Sb, W, Pb, Te, and Bi and have well comparable δ34S values ranging from -12.0 ‰ to -5.5 ‰. Grain-scale variation has been observed for Au and other trace elements both in Py1 and Py2, likely reflecting changes in physio-chemical conditions such as fO2, fS2 and temperature due to fluid-rock interactions and/or fluid mixing. The δ34S values are broadly consistent with sulfur isotopic compositions of many Early Triassic ilmenite-series intrusions in the Xiahe-Hezuo district, and thus suggest a magmatic sulfur derivation from the reduced magmas that have assimilated carbonaceous sedimentary rocks. The δD and δ18O values of ore-fluids calculated from isotopic compositions of ore-related sericite range from -56 to -76 ‰ and 10.1 to 12.4 ‰, respectively, indicating a magmatic fluids exsolved from the above-mentioned ilmenite-series magma or a mixture of such as fluid with a metamorphic derived component. Synthesis of geochronological and geochemical data throughout the Xiahe-Hezuo district led us to conclude that the Zaozigou gold deposits can be considered as a shallow-seated, distal product of a reduced intrusion-related gold system.

Superimposing mineralization in the Zhengguang Au-Zn deposit, NE China: Evidence from pyrite Re-Os geochronology, fluid inclusion, and H-O-S-Pb isotopes

Abstract:The Duobaoshan orefield is located in the eastern part of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB) and underwent multiphase magmatism and mineralization. The Zhengguang deposit in the orefield is characterized by porphyry copper mineralization and intermediate-sulfidation (IS) epithermal gold mineralization. The porphyry-type veinlet-disseminated sulfide mineralization (∼480 Ma) is hosted in granodiorite/tonalite porphyries and hydrothermal breccias, and is associated with widespread potassic (K-feldspar and biotite) alteration. Three porphyry-type mineralization stages have been identified: (I-1) quartz + medium-fine grained pyrite, (I-2) quartz + pyrite + chalcopyrite, and (I-3) quartz + calcite + minor pyrite. The IS epithermal vein/veinlet-disseminated mineralization occurs in andesite porphyry and fractures of the Duobaoshan Formation volcanic rocks, and is associated with extensive silicic, sericitic, and pyrite-sericitic-silicic alterations and minor propylitic alteration. Three IS epithermal-type mineralization stages are identified: (II-1) quartz + coarse-grained pyrite, (II-2) quartz + polymetallic sulfides, and (II-3) quartz + calcite + barren sulfides. Five stage II-2 pyrite samples yielded a Re-Os isochron age of 246.0 ± 6.4 Ma (MSWD = 0.85), suggesting a Triassic Au mineralization event after the Ordovician Cu mineralization. Stage I-1 fluid inclusions (FIs) are predominantly of VL- and LV-type and minor SL-type, with homogenization temperatures (Th) of 283–359 ℃ and salinities of 0.3–35.1 wt.%. Stage I-2 is characteristically composed of VL- and LV-type inclusions with Th of 193–296 ℃ and salinities of 0.8–14.2 wt.%. Only VL-type inclusions occur in stage I-3, II-1, II-2, and II-3 with Th of 149–216 ℃, 213–285 ℃, 169–236 ℃, and 125–176 ℃, and salinities of 2.4–7.9 wt.%, 6.5–12.2 wt.%, 3.4–8.8 wt.%, and 2.1–6.3 wt.%, respectively. H-O isotopic compositions for the mineralization (Ordovician: δ18OH2O = -9.9 to -0.5‰, δD = -86 to -75.6‰; Triassic: δ18OH2O = -8.4 to -2‰, δD = -134.1 to -88.5‰) indicate two different evolving fluid systems, both with an initial magmatic source and a later meteoric water incursion. Sulfur and lead isotope (Ordovician: δ34S (-3.1 to -0.7‰), 206Pb/204Pb (17.570–17.613), 207Pb/204Pb (15.427–15.441), 208Pb/204Pb (37.258–37.294); Triassic: δ34S (-5.4 to -2.5‰), 206Pb/204Pb (17.627–17.965), 207Pb/204Pb (15.466–15.534), 208Pb/204Pb (37.468–37.703)) values suggest a dominantly magmatic and a mixed magmatic-sedimentary source for the Ordovician and Triassic mineralization, respectively.

Formation Age and Characteristics of Magma Sources of Volcanics Related to Gold Mineralization in the Beihuaiyang Zone, Anhui:Constraints from Zircon U-Pb Dating and Hf Isotopes

Abstract:This paper presents LA-ICP-MS zircon dating and zircon Hf isotopic data of the Xindianhe dacite related to gold mineralization in the Beihuaiyang zone,Anhui Province.The Th/U ratios of zircons range from 1.21 to 2.57,which indicated that they are magmatic zircons in origin.The Xindianhe dacite has weighted mean age of (130±2) Ma (n=13,MSWD=1.4),which indicated it is the crystallization age of the Xindianhe dacite in consideration of euhedral texture and zonary structure of zircon mineral.The measurement of zircon Hf isotopes show that εHf(t) value ranges from-31.6 to-26.3 and corresponding two-stages ages are 2.82 to 3.15 Ga,which indicated that it was formed by the melting of the Meso-Archean to Neo-Archean basement.The gold mineralization in the Beihuaiyang region likely results from the large-scale magmatism related to the orogenic collapse which were formed in the post-collisional extensional setting in the post early Cretaceous period.In combination with previous data,two-stages of gold mineralization are identified,i.e.,early stage epithermal gold mineralization (about 130 Ma age) and late stage porphyry Mo mineralization (about 114 Ma age).Therefore there is great prospecting potential for epithermal gold deposit in the Xindianhe region.
Late Mesozoic tectonic evolution and thermal history in the northeast Xing'an Block, NE China: Implications for gold mineralization and preservation

Abstract:New zircon U–Pb, sericite Ar–Ar, and zircon and apatite (U–Th)/He ages as well as whole‐rock geochemistry in the northeast Xing'an Block in NE China reveal the tectonic evolution and thermal history during the Late Mesozoic, which provides a new insight for further defining the orogenic and epithermal gold mineralization and preservation. Late Triassic–Jurassic orogenic and Early Cretaceous epithermal Au deposits are significant producers of Au, Ag, and potentially critical elements (e.g., Te, Se and Sb) in the North Heilongjiang Belt in the Xing'an Block, NE China. However, the preservation mechanism of these Au deposits associated with tectonic evolution is unclear. Here, we conducted zircon U–Pb, sericite Ar–Ar, zircon and apatite (U–Th)/He dating as well as whole‐rock geochemistry in the Xing'an Block. Zircon U–Pb dating shows the ages of 174.1 ± 2.4 Ma for the granodiorite, 169.9 ± 1.6 Ma for the tonalite, 154.0 ± 2.0 Ma for the monzogranite and ca.122 Ma for the diorite. Sericite Ar–Ar dating presents plateau and isochron ages of 163.2 ± 1.8 Ma and 163.4 ± 2.8 Ma. The average apatite (U–Th)/He (AHe) and zircon (U–Th)/He (ZHe) ages from the Jurassic rocks have the ranges of ca. 146–89 Ma and ca. 150–116 Ma and from the Cretaceous are ca. 109–76 Ma and ca. 117–111 Ma, respectively. The Early‐Middle Jurassic intrusions are featured by the tonalite‐trondhjemite‐granodiorite (TTG) rock type. Late Jurassic monzogranite has the geochemical signature of adakitic rocks. The Early Cretaceous granitoids are classified as volcanic arc granites with a part of the Early Cretaceous granodiorite featured by adakitic. These new results reveal five group ages associated with tectonic evolution, Au mineralization and the preservation of the Au deposits. (i) Magmatic events were related to the subduction of the Mongolia‐Okhotsk Ocean during the Early Jurassic (ca. 177–170 Ma) and then the compressional settings with regional deformation (ca. 167–163 Ma). (ii) Thickening crust and orogenic Au mineralization were related to the closure of the Mongolia‐Okhotsk Ocean (ca. 154–145 Ma). (iii) The transformation was from compressional to extensional settings followed by exhumation during the Early Cretaceous (ca. 145–120 Ma), which is the factor of the exhumation of the orogenic Au deposits formed from the Late Triassic to Late Jurassic. (iv) Epithermal Au–Ag mineralization was associated with an extension related to the subduction of the Palaeo‐Pacific Plate (ca. 120–100 Ma). (v) Thermal history shows one thermal event during the Late Cretaceous (ca. 89–76 Ma). The Au deposits have been preserved since the Late Cretaceous.

Abstract:The Xiaorequanzi Cu–Zn deposit is the first and only volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) Cu–Zn deposit discovered in the Carboniferous volcanic-sedimentary rock series of the East Tianshan, Xinjiang. The mineralization includes stratiform, stringer/stockwork, volcanic hydrothermal-related veinlet, and subvolcanic-related vein/veinlet. The exhalative sedimentary period contributed to the majority of the Cu–Zn resource and can be subdivided into three stages: (I) stratiform (Ia) and stringer/stockwork (Ib) mineralization is represented by layered, lenticular, tabular, vein, and irregular Cu–Zn–(Au) orebodies, (II) volcanic hydrothermal-related vein mineralization is defined by pyrite–quartz ± carbonate veinlets, and (III) subvolcanic-related vein/veinlet mineralization is associated with albitophyre and dacite porphyry.Fluid inclusions study reveals that the mineralizing fluids in stage I are characterized by moderate–low temperature (peak at 160–240 °C) and low salinity (peak at 5.0–10.0 wt% NaCl eqv.). The composition of He–Ar and H–O isotopes indicate that stage I mineralizing fluids were derived from deep-circulation seawater mixed with magmatic fluids accompanied by fluid mixing. Sulfides from stage I record a range of δ34S values between 3.7 and 7.8‰, suggesting that the mineralizing sulfur was derived from seawater sulfate and volcanic rocks by thermochemical sulfate reduction. The mineralizing fluids in stage II display low temperatures (peak at 140–180 °C) and low salinities (peak at 5.0–7.0 wt% NaCl eqv.), which could indicate continuous cooling of magmatic fluids and input of seawater accelerated the precipitation of pyrite in this stage. The mineralizing fluids in stage III are characteristic of bimodal distribution temperatures (peak at 160–220 °C and 240–280 °C) and salinity (peak at 6.0–8.0 wt% NaCl eqv. and 9.0–12.0 wt% NaCl eqv.). The composition of H–O isotopes indicate that stage III mineralizing fluids were derived from magmatic fluid mixed with seawater accompanied by fluid boiling. The δ34S values range from 1.5 to 4.0‰, implying a magmatic sulfur origin.Zircon U–Pb dating of mineralization-hosting tuff and dacite porphyry yielded ages of 354.5±3.9 Ma and 341.9±3.1 Ma, respectively. Combining the previous Re–Os and U–Pb ages of the deposit, we conclude that the Xiaorequanzi Cu–Zn deposit is spatially and genetically associated with the volcanic exhalative sedimentation at 352–357 Ma and subvolcanic intrusion at 342–345 Ma, respectively.

Abstract:The Wenyu giant gold deposit is hosted in the Precambrian Taihua Supergroup metamorphic rocks within the Xiaoqinling terrane (Qinling Orogen), on the southern margin of the North China Craton. The mineralization can be divided into three stages: quartz–pyrite veins early, quartz–sulfide veins middle (main), and carbonate–quartz veinlets late, with gold being mainly introduced in main stage. Quartz formed in two earlier stages contains three compositional types of fluid inclusions, i.e. pure CO2, CO2–H2O and NaCl–H2O, but the late-stage minerals only contain the NaCl–H2O inclusions. The inclusions in quartz formed in the early, main and late stages yield total homogenization temperatures of 262–417°C, 236–407°C and 114–239°C, respectively, with salinities no higher than 13wt.% NaCl equiv. Trapping pressures estimated from CO2–H2O inclusions are 139–399MPa and 111–316MPa in the early and main stages, corresponding to mineralization depths of 14km and 11km, respectively. Fluid boiling and mixing caused rapid precipitation of sulfides and native Au. Through boiling and inflow of meteoric water, the ore-forming fluid system evolved from CO2-rich to CO2-poor in composition, and from metamorphic to meteoric, as indicated by decreasing δ18Owater values from early to late. The carbon, sulfur and lead isotope compositions suggest the hostrocks within the Taihua Supergroup to be a significant source of ore metals. Integrating the data obtained from the studies including regional geology, ore geology, fluid inclusion and C–H–O–S–Pb isotope geochemistry, we conclude that the Wenyu gold deposit was an orogenic-type system formed in the tectonic transition from compression to extension during the Jurassic–Early Cretaceous continental collision between the North China and Yangtze Cratons.

Abstract:The Tanjianshan goldfield is the most important gold producer in the North Qaidam, NW China. Genesis of gold deposits in Tanjianshan is enigmatic, primarily because of uncertainties as to timing, mineralization processes and fluid sources. We investigate these uncertainties through a comprehensive study of the texture and geochemistry (LA-MC-ICPMS trace elements and sulfur isotopes) of pyrite and in-situ U-Pb dating of monazite from the Qinglonggou gold deposit. Six types of pyrite with distinct textures, trace element contents and sulfur isotopes have been identified, and provide constraints on two overprinting gold-related hydrothermal events. Stage I consists of Py1, occurring as veinlets parallel to S1 deformation in a schist, is characterized by extremely low Co/Ni ratios with high contents of Ni, and high δ34S values (+14.9 ‰ to +16.1 ‰), and were likely derived from metamorphism of the sedimentary strata in the Tanjianshan and Wandonggou Group. In stage II, Py2 occurs in the pyrite-quartz veins that cut Py1 veinlets. They have similar δ34S (+13.1 ‰ to +17.8 ‰) to Py1, indicating that sulfur was likely derived from the dissolution of Py1. The stage I and II veins formed during an early gold pre-concentration event, which is constrained at 429.1 ± 5.9 Ma by in-situ U-Pb dating of monazite that coexists with Py1. Stage III includes Py3 and Py4 which occur in the altered carbonaceous schist and accompanying quartz veins. Trace metals are highest in Py3 (Ag, Au, Sb, and Bi) which represent the most economic ore stage in the deposit, whereas the following Py4 shows low concentrations of most trace elements due to abundant Py3 precipitation. In contrast, trace elements contents increase in Py5 to similar levels as those seen in Py3, suggesting a new pulse of fluid in stage IV. Minor Py6 grains precipitated in the youngest quartz-calcite veins associated with stage V, and contain low concentrations of trace elements. The δ34S values of Py3 (+5.2 ‰ to +6.0 ‰) and Py4 (+4.2 ‰ to +6.1 ‰) are within the range of magmatic sulfur, suggesting a dominantly magmatic source. The δ34S values increase from Py3-4 to Py5 (+6.3 ‰ to +7.4 ‰), and to Py6 (+8.7 ‰ to +9.6 ‰), probably due to increasing contribution from the host rocks, as well as decreasing fO2, through incremental fluid-rock interaction. Stages III and IV represent a late gold-mineralizing event during Late Paleozoic to Early Mesozoic, while stage V is post-mineralization. The overprinting gold pre-concentration and mineralization events in the Tanjianshan goldfield correspond to orogenic evolution of the Proto-Tethys Ocean and Paleo-Tethys Ocean, respectively.

Abstract:The large-scale Erdaohe Ag–Pb–Zn deposit in the central Great Xing'an Range, China, contains >9.04 Mt of ore reserves. The deposit consists of skarn-type Ag–Pb–Zn orebodies located within a contact zone that is mainly between an Early Cretaceous porphyritic granite and Jurassic calcareous tuff. The deposit records four stages of formation, which are skarn, early quartz–sulfide (disseminated ores), late quartz–sulfide (veined ores), and carbonate stages. Fluid inclusion microthermometry indicates that skarn stage fluids were higher temperature (330°C to >500°C) and more saline (up to 59.8 wt.% NaCl equivalent) than the early quartz–sulfide (250°C–300°C, <36.1 wt.% NaCl equivalent) and late quartz–sulfide stage (160°C–220°C, <32.1 wt.% NaCl equivalent) fluids. Fluid inclusions of the carbonate stage record even lower temperatures (150°C–170°C) and have generally low salinity (2.1–5.1 wt.% NaCl equivalent). Raman microprobe data indicate that these fluids are dominated by H2O–NaCl ± CO2 system phases. Sulfides formed during the early and late quartz–sulfide stages of mineralization have a relatively narrow range of δ34S values (4.4‰–8.4‰) that are indicative of sulfur derived from a magmatic source. Quartz samples from the early and late quartz–sulfide stages have δ18Ofluid values of 0.1‰–2.1‰ and from −5.0‰ to −3.2‰, respectively, suggesting that the mineralizing fluids were originally magmatic with later stage mineralization involving the addition of meteoric water. LA–ICP–MS U–Pb dating of zircons from the mineralization-related porphyritic granite yielded a weighted mean age of 131.4 ± 0.3 Ma (MSWD = 1.5), indicating that the deposit formed during the Early Cretaceous. Deposit formation involved an aqueous fluid that was exsolved during the final crystallization of the porphyritic granite and ascended along fracture zones until it reacted with Ca-rich wall rocks, cooled to <300°C, and boiled under hydrostatic conditions. This caused a decrease in temperature and sulfur fugacity in the ore-forming fluid system, which triggered Ag–Pb–Zn mineralization.

Abstract:Volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits are globally significant sources of metals. The Hongtoushan VMS deposit is the only large Archean Cu-Zn VMS deposit in the North China Craton, carrying substantial economic value. Significant deformation and metamorphism have made the tectonic setting of the Hongtoushan VMS deposit the subject of extensive debate. This study investigates the petrogenesis and chronology of the ore-bearing host rocks from the Hongtoushan Cu-Zn VMS deposit in the North China Craton. By utilizing whole-rock geochemical analyses and zircon dating, this research sheds light on the origin and evolution of the ore-bearing rocks within the deposit. The whole-rock geochemical analysis data indicate that the Hongtoushan ore-bearing rock series is mainly composed of amphibole plagioclase gneiss (basalt protolith) and biotite plagioclase gneiss (andesite and rhyolite protolith), suggesting a complete volcanic cycle from basic to medium-acidic volcanic rocks. The amphibole plagioclase gneiss has slight LREE enrichment patterns with unremarkable depletions of Nb, Ta, and Ti and belongs to contaminated ocean plateau basalt (OPB) in terms of composition, which is generally interpreted as being generated from the mantle plume head. Meanwhile, the biotite plagioclase gneiss has relatively steep LREE enrichment distribution patterns with remarkable negative Ta, Nb, and Ti anomalies and a wide range of Zr/Y ratios, indicating their classification as FI- and FII-type felsic rocks; they were likely formed through the fractional crystallization of basic magma combined with crustal assimilation. When combined with the zircon dating results, the ore-bearing host rocks of the Hongtoushan VMS deposit were generated via a continuous magmatic evolution process. The zircon dating of the host rocks indicates a formation age of between 2609 and 2503 Ma, with metamorphic events between 2540 and 2466 Ma, which is consistent with the 2.5 Ga-related global mantle plume event. Further research shows that the ore-bearing host rocks are more likely to have been formed in a mantle plume-related stretching environment, possibly a margin rift.

Abstract:The North China Craton (NCC) hosts numerous gold deposits clustering in several districts, which combined have proven reserves of ∼7000 t Au. Geochronological studies have shown that the craton-wide gold mineralization occurred mostly in the 140−120 Ma interval, coincident with the peak of thinning and destruction of the lithospheric keel beneath the NCC. Here we integrate geological relations with LA-ICP-MS zircon U-Pb dating to reveal a new gold mineralization event in the Jidong district, northern NCC. The Xiajinbao, Yu'erya and Jinchangyu gold deposits in this district are characterized by crosscutting relationship between gold veins and various dikes. This relation suggests that zircon U-Pb dating of the pre-ore and post-ore dikes can provide tight constraints on the time of gold veining. LA-ICP-MS zircon U-Pb dating of pre- and post-ore dikes from the three gold deposits yields concordant U-Pb dates of 165−163 Ma, 165−164 Ma and 165−164 Ma, respectively. These indistinguishable U-Pb dates within analytical uncertainty are interpreted as the timing of gold deposition (165−163 Ma) and thus reveal a previously unrecognized Late Jurassic gold mineralization event in the Jidong district. A large variety of mafic to intermediate dikes in the Jidong district have zircon U-Pb dates of 166 ± 1 to 164 ± 2 Ma, consistent with ages of the three gold deposits investigated. The temporal consistency and abundant sulfide inclusions hosted in the mafic-intermediate intrusions, along with the close spatial relations between gold veins and various dikes within and surrounding the mines, indicate a possible magmatic source for ore fluids. Synthesis of regional geological, geochemical and isotopic data led us to conclude that the Late Jurassic gold mineralization in the northern NCC is genetically related to lithosphere destruction of the NCC. An additional implication from this study is that the Mesozoic decratonization of the NCC and associated gold mineralization are spatially and temporally heterogeneous and much more prolonged than commonly thought.

Abstract:The Jiapigou ore cluster (JOC) located on the northeastern margin of the North China Craton (NCC) is a major producer of gold in China and is famous for its quartz vein-type gold deposits. It currently contains a dozen gold deposits with total proven reserves of >180 t Au, among which the Benqu deposit is the earliest discovered and most representative. The deposit is hosted within Neoarchean granitic gneisses and metamorphosed volcanic-sedimentary sequences. Gold orebodies mainly occur as gold-bearing quartz veins controlled by NE–NEE-trending ductile–brittle faults. Hydrothermal mineralization can be divided into early (quartz–pyrite), main (quartz–polymetallic sulfide–native gold), and late (quartz–carbonate) stages, with gold precipitation occurring in the main stage. Three types of primary fluid inclusions (FIs) are identified in quartz formed at different stages: CO2–H2O–NaCl (C-type), H2O–NaCl (W-type) and pure CO2 (PC-type). The early-stage quartz contains C- and W-type FIs, which have homogenization temperatures of 269–298 °C and salinities of 8.8–16.7 wt% NaCl equiv. The main-stage quartz contains all three types of FIs, with homogenization temperatures of 197–268 °C and salinities of 5.1–15.2 wt% NaCl equiv. The late-stage quartz contains only W-type FIs with homogenization temperatures of 145–198 °C and salinities of 3.2–12.4 wt% NaCl equiv. The ore-forming fluid system evolved from a CO2–H2O–NaCl system in the early stage to a H2O-dominated system in the late stage. The addition of meteoric water led to fluid immiscibility, facilitating the precipitation of gold and associated sulfides. The H–O–S–Pb–Sr isotope results indicate that the ore-forming fluids were derived from magmatic water and that the ore-forming materials were mainly extracted from a deep magmatic reservoir sourced mostly from the lower crust, with trace mantle components. Rb–Sr dating of the gold-bearing sulfides yields an isochron age of 175.8 ± 4.6 Ma (MSWD = 1.9). Zircon U–Pb dating of the Benqu diorite yields a weighted mean 206Pb/238U age of 176.5 ± 2.4 Ma (MSWD = 1.2). The Benqu diorite is high-K calc-alkaline, with enriched LREEs and LILEs (e.g., Rb, Pb, and K) and depleted HFSEs (e.g., Nb, Ta, and Ti), which is typical of the geochemical signature of arc magmas. The zircons have negative εHf(t) values of –11.3 to –8.9, indicating strong involvement of old crustal materials. These data suggest that the primary magma originated mainly from the partial melting of ancient lower crust that mixed with minor underplated mantle-derived magma. The above results systematically reveal that the Benqu is a mesothermal magmatic–hydrothermal lode gold deposit that formed in an active continental margin environment in the late Early Jurassic. Comparative studies of Benqu and other gold deposits in the JOC confirm that a significant magmatic–hydrothermal event occurred during the conversion from compression to extension that followed the first subduction of the Paleo-Pacific Plate beneath the Eurasian Plate.

Geochronology, fluid inclusions, and isotopic characteristics of the Xiaoshan gold deposit, Henan Province, China

Abstract:The Xiaoshan gold deposit of western Henan Province is located in the southern margin of the North China craton (NCC). Ore bodies of the deposit occur as veins in the fault zones. The ore-forming process can be divided into three stages: an early quartz–pyrite stage, a middle quartz–polymetallic sulfide stage, and a late quartz–carbonate stage. The LA-ICP-MS zircon U–Pb age of the Houhe granite, which is related to Au mineralization of the Xiaoshan deposit, was 139–137 Ma. The initial 176Hf/177Hf values of the Houhe intrusion are 0.282126–0.282368, with the εHf(t), TDM1(Hf), and TDM2(Hf) values being −19.9 to −11.3, 1242–1583 Ma, and 1912–2454 Ma, respectively, indicating that the Houhe granite is formed by partial melting of the lower crust and that the source is mainly the Taihua Group. Two types of fluid inclusions (FIs) have been distinguished in various quartz veins including liquid-rich (WL-type) and H2O–CO2 (C-type) inclusions. The FIs in the quartz of the quartz–pyrite stage comprise WL- and C-type inclusions; their homogenization temperatures, salinities, and densities vary from 300 °C to 393 °C, 1.6 wt% to 11.0 wt% NaCleqv., and 0.57 to 0.82 g/cm3, respectively. The FIs in the quartz of the quartz–polymetallic sulfide stage consist of WL- and C-type inclusions; their homogenization temperatures, salinities, and densities range from 261 °C to 298 °C, 1.1 wt% to 11.8 wt% NaCleqv., and 0.74 to 0.89 g/cm3, respectively. Only WL-type inclusions are observed in the quartz of the quartz–carbonate stage; their homogenization temperatures, salinities, and densities vary from 193 °C to 258 °C, 2.2 wt% to 12.7 wt% NaCleqv., and 0.87 to 0.97 g/cm3, respectively. The ore-forming fluids of the Xiaoshan gold deposit are generally characterized by medium temperature, moderate–low salinity, low density and belonging to an H2O–NaCl ± CO2 system. The δ18OH2O values calculated for ore-bearing quartz vary from 0.7‰ to 4.5‰, and the δDV-SMOW values from bulk extraction of fluid inclusion water vary from −69.5‰ to −47.8‰, suggesting that the ore-forming fluid consists dominantly of magmatic water. The δ34SV-CDT values range from 0.37‰ to 3.9‰. The 206Pb/204Pb, 207Pb/204Pb, and 208Pb/204Pb values of the ore minerals are in the ranges of 17.391–17.728, 15.420–15.577, and 37.420–37.923, respectively. The data from the S and Pb isotopic systems indicate that the ore-forming materials came from granitic magma. The Xiaoshan gold deposit is a mesothermal lode-gold deposit of magmatic-hydrothermal origin. Fluid phase separation and temperature decrease were the dominant mechanisms for the deposition of ore-forming materials.
