Abstract:We prove a complex polynomial plank covering theorem for not necessarily homogeneous polynomials. As the consequence of this result, we extend the complex plank theorem of Ball to the case of planks that are not necessarily centrally symmetric and not necessarily round. We also prove a weaker version of the spherical polynomial plank covering conjecture for planks of different widths.

Abstract:This is a survey article on real algebra and geometry, and in particular on its recent applications in optimization and convexity. We first introduce basic notions and results from the classical theory. We then explain how these relate to optimization, mostly via semidefinite programming. We introduce interesting geometric problems arising from the classification of feasible sets for semidefinite programming. We close with a perspective on the very active area of non-commutative real algebra and geometry.

Abstract:Suppose that $C$ is a bounded, convex subset of $\mathbb{R}^n$, and that $P_1, \dots, P_k$ are planks which cover $C$ in respective directions $v_1, \dots, v_k$ and with widths $w_1, \dots, w_k$. In 1951, Bang conjectured that the sum of relative widths $$\sum_{i=1}^k \frac{w_i}{w_{v_i}(C)} \geq 1, $$ generalizing a previous conjecture of Tarski. Here, $w_{v_i}(C)$ is the width of $C$ in the direction $v_i$. In this note we give a short proof of this conjecture under the assumption that, for every $m$ with $1 \leq m \leq k$, $ C \setminus \bigcup_{i = 1}^m P_i $ is a convex set. In addition, we prove that if the projection of $C$ onto the vector space spanned by the normal vectors of the planks has dimension $d$, then the above sum of relative widths is at least $1/d$.

Abstract:This tract has two purposes: to show what is known about the n-dimensional unit cubes and to demonstrate how Analysis, Algebra, Combinatorics, Graph Theory, Hyperbolic Geometry, Number Theory, can be applied to the study of them. The unit cubes, from any point of view, are among the most important and fascinating objects in an n-dimensional Euclidean space. However, our knowledge about them is still quite limited and many basic problems remain unsolved. In this Tract eight topics about the unit cubes are introduced: cross sections, projections, inscribed simplices, triangulations, 0/1 polytopes, Minkowski's conjecture, Furtwangler's conjecture, and Keller's conjecture. In particular the author demonstrates how deep analysis like log concave measure and the Brascamp-Lieb inequality can deal with the cross section problem, how Hyperbolic Geometry helps with the triangulation problem, how group rings can deal with Minkowski's conjecture and Furtwangler's conjecture, and how Graph Theory handles Keller's conjecture.

Abstract:In this survey, we discuss volumetric and combinatorial results concerning (mostly finite) intersections or unions of balls (mostly of equal radii) in the $d$-dimensional real vector space, mostly equipped with the Euclidean norm. Our first topic is the Kneser-Poulsen Conjecture, according to which if a finite number of unit balls are rearranged so that the pairwise distances of the centers increase, then the volume of the union (resp., intersection) increases (resp., decreases). Next, we discuss Blaschke-Santaló type, and isoperimetric inequalities for convex sets in Euclidean $d$-space obtained as intersections of (possibly infinitely many) unit balls, which we call spindle convex sets. We present some results on spindle convex sets in the plane, with special attention paid to their approximation by the spindle convex hull of a finite subset. A ball-polyhedron is a convex body obtained as the intersection of finitely many unit balls in Euclidean $d$-space. We consider the combinatorial structure of their faces, and volumetric properties of ball polyhedra obtained from choosing the centers of the balls randomly.

Abstract:In geometry, there are several challenging problems studying numbers associated to convex bodies. For example, the packing density problem, the kissing number problem, the covering density problem, the packing-covering constant problem, Hadwiger's covering conjecture and Borsuk's partition conjecture. They are fundamental and fascinating problems about the same objects. However, up to now, both the methodology and the technique applied to them are essentially different. Therefore, a common foundation for them has been much expected. By treating problems of these types as functionals defined on the spaces of n-dimensional convex bodies, this paper tries to create such a foundation. In particular, supderivatives for these functionals will be studied.

Despite work on these topics going back to the mid 1990s, there is no survey, or a part of a survey for this area of research. In this paper we review and categorize over 60 relevant papers and analyze them by geometry, (e.g., spherical, hyperbolic, torus), by contribution (e.g., technique, evaluation, proof, application), and by graph class (e.g., tree, planar, complex).

Abstract:At a first glance, the problem of illuminating the boundary of a convex body by external light sources and the problem of covering a convex body by its smaller positive homothetic copies appear to be quite different. They are in fact two sides of the same coin and give rise to one of the important longstanding open problems in discrete geometry, namely, the Illumination Conjecture. In this paper, we survey the activity in the areas of discrete geometry, computational geometry and geometric analysis motivated by this conjecture. Special care is taken to include the recent advances that are not covered by the existing surveys. We also include some of our recent results related to these problems and describe two new approaches -- one conventional and the other computer-assisted -- to make progress on the illumination problem. Some open problems and conjectures are also presented.

Abstract:Packing, covering and tiling is a fascinating subject in pure mathematics. It mainly deals with arrangement patterns and efficiencies of geometric objects. This subject has a long and rich history, even back to Kepler, Newton, Lagrange and Gauss. Inspired by its applications and with the help of computing methods, in recent years it has become a very active research area in mathematics once again. Most of the fundamental problems in this subject can be characterized as simple sounding but challenging. This subject has important applications in many other areas such as Number Theory, Logic, Complex Analysis, Optimization, Coding Theory, Crystallography, Material Science, Industry, and even Biology. In spite of the long history, many of its key problems are still open, even in the plane.
