Abstract:The intrinsic limitations of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) with regard to safety, cost, and the availability of raw materials have promoted research on so-called "post-LIBs". The recent intense research of post-LIBs provides an invaluable lesson that existing electrode materials used in LIBs may not perform as well in post-LIBs, calling for new material designs compliant with emerging batteries based on new chemistries. One promising approach in this direction is the development of materials with intercalated water or organic molecules, as these materials demonstrate superior electrochemical performance in emerging battery systems. The enlarged ionic channel dimensions and effective shielding of the electrostatic interaction between carrier ions and the lattice host are the origins of the observed electrochemical performance. Moreover, these intercalants serve as interlayer pillars to sustain the framework for prolonged cycles. Representative examples of such intercalated materials applied to batteries based on Li+, Na+, Mg2+, and Zn2+ ions and supercapacitors are considered, along with their impact in materials research.

Abstract:To further enhance the properties of batteries, it is important to exploit new electrode materials. Carbon fiber has been found to play a crucial role. Various batteries, such as Lithium-ion batteries, Lithium-sulfur batteries, Sodium-ion batteries, and Vanadium redox flow batteries, have been investigated. Moreover, greatly improved performance has been obtained by compositing pure carbon fibers with the metal materials, metallic oxide materials, metallic sulfide materials, carbon materials and so on. Through the application of carbon materials and their compounds in various types of batteries, the battery performance has obviously been improved. This review primarily introduces carbon fiber materials for battery applications. The relationship between the architecture of the material and its electrochemical performance is analyzed in detail. In addition, the development of the history, unsolved problems and prospects with respect to the introduction of carbon fibers are also included.

Abstract:The ion-intercalation-based rechargeable batteries are emerging as the most efficient energy storage technology for electronic vehicles, grids, and portable devices. These devices require rechargeable batteries with higher energy–density than commercial Li-ion batteries, which are intrinsically limited by specific capacities and electrochemical potentials of transition-metal (M) electrode materials. Over the past decades, a significant number of studies have focused on exploring coordination environments and electronic origins of these materials based on ligand field theory (LFT). However, studies to understand and manipulate the relationship between their local-structural characteristics and electrochemical properties are limited. In this review, we comprehensively discussed how the combining of LFT and first-principles calculations can be used to derive Fermi levels that determine electrochemical potential, crystal field stabilization energy, and anionic redox activity. Based on this, a series of strategies are proposed to improve the phase-stability and energy–density of intercalation-type electrode materials, such as ion-intercalation potential tuning of rigid-band systems and electrode phase stability regulations with different M periods. Two high energy–density cathode materials, M-free LiBCF2 and Li-free group-VB/VIB MX2 (X = S, Se), are successfully designed from the aforementioned principles derived. Finally, we also highlight further directions for designing better intercalation-type materials based on LFT and their opportunities/challenges.

Abstract:Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), used for energy supply and storage equipment, have been widely applied in consumer electronics, electric vehicles, and energy storage systems. However, the urgent demand for high energy density batteries and the shortage of lithium resources is driving scientists to develop high-performance materials and find alternatives. Low-volume expansion carbon material is the ideal choice of anode material. However, the low specific capacity has gradually become the shortcoming for the development of LIBs and thus developing new carbon material with high specific capacity is urgently needed. In addition, developing alternatives of LIBs, such as sodium ion batteries and potassium-ion batteries, also puts forward demands for new types of carbon materials. As is well-known, the design of high-performance electrodes requires a deep understanding on the working mechanism and the structural evolution of active materials. On this issue, ex-situ techniques have been widely applied to investigate the electrode materials under special working conditions, and provide a lot of information. Unfortunately, these observed phenomena are difficult to reflect the reaction under real working conditions and some important short-lived intermediate products cannot be captured, leading to an incomplete understanding of the working mechanism. In-situ techniques can observe the changes of active materials in operando during the charge/discharge processes, providing the concrete process of solid electrolyte formation, ions intercalation mechanism, structural evolutions, etc. Herein, this review aims to provide an overview on the characters of carbon materials in alkali ion batteries and the role of in-situ techniques in developing carbon materials.

Abstract:Exploitation of the efficient and cost-effective electrode materials is urgently desirable for the development of advanced energy devices. With the unique features of good electronic conductivity, structure flexibility, and desirable physicochemical property, carbon-based nanomaterials have attracted enormous research attention as efficient electrode materials. Electronic and microstructure engineering of carbon-based nanomaterials are the keys to regulate the electrocatalytic properties for the specific redox reactions of advanced metal-based batteries. However, the critical roles of carbon-based electrocatalysts for rechargeable metal batteries have not been comprehensively discussed. With the basic introduction on the electronic and microstructure engineering strategies, we summarize the recent advances on the rational design of carbon-based electrocatalysts for the important redox reactions in various metal-air batteries and metal-halogen batteries. The relationships between the composition, structure, and the electrocatalytic properties of carbon-based materials were well-addressed to enhance the battery performance. The overview of present challenges and opportunities of the carbon-based active materials for future energy-related applications was also discussed.

Abstract:Potassium-ion energy-storage devices have emerged as important candidates of next-generation energy-storage devices. Carbon materials have established themselves as vital roles in electrode of potassium-ion device due to environmentally friendly nature, low-cost, and large-current charge/discharge capability, ultra-long life and wide operation temperature region. In this timely review, a brief introduction of the state-of-the-art developments about carbon materials was provided. Subsequently, synthetic routes to carbon materials and their electrochemical performances in energy-storage devices were stated in detail. The relationships between rationally designed structures and electrochemical performances of carbon electrode materials were summarized to try to provide basic guidelines for material design. Potential research directions and important scientific problems of carbon materials were also proposed in the hope of solving the emerging problems of carbon-based energy-storage devices.

Abstract:Metal-ion(Li-,Na-,Zn-,K-,Mg-,and Al-ion)batteries(MIBs)play an important role in realizing the goals of"emission peak and carbon neutralization"because of their green production techniques,lower pollution,high voltage,and large energy density.Carbon-based materials are indispensable for developing MIBs and are widely adopted as active or auxiliary materials in the anodes and cathodes.For example,carbon-based materials,includ-ing graphite,Si/C and hard carbon,have been used as anode materials for Li-and Na-ion batteries.Carbon can also be used as a conductive coating for cathodes,such as in LiFePO4/C,to achieve better performance.In addition,as new high-valence MIBs(Zn-,Al-,and Mg-ion)have emerged,a growing number of novel carbon-based mate-rials have been utilized to construct high-performance MIBs.Herein,we discuss the recent development trends in advanced carbon-based materials for MIBs.The impact of the structure properties of advanced carbon-based materials on energy storage is addressed,and a perspective on their development is also proposed.

Abstract:This review summarizes the recent advances in ion‐conducting covalent organic frameworks (COFs) toward a wide scope of battery applications. The design principles and ion‐transfer mechanisms of ion‐conducting COFs are systematically proposed and analyzed to promote the development of high‐performance rechargeable batteries. Related challenges and perspectives are also emphasized to pave the foundation for the further optimization and application of ion‐conducting COFs.Ionic conduction plays a critical role in the process of electrode reactions and the charge transfer kinetics in a rechargeable battery. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have emerged as an exciting new class of ionic conductors, and have made great progress in terms of their application in rechargeable batteries. The unique features of COFs, such as well‐defined directional channels, functional diversity, and structural robustness, endow COF‐based conductors with a low ionic diffusion energy barrier and excellent temperature tolerance, which are much superior to the classic inorganic or polymer conductors. Here, a comprehensive analysis and summary of the unique ion‐conducting behavior of COF‐based conductors are presented, and the design principles for ion‐conducting COFs are emphasized. Moreover, a systematic overview of the recent progress in the development of ion‐conducting COFs serving as electrodes, separators, solid electrolytes, and artificial interphase materials for diverse battery applications, such as metal‐ion batteries, lithium metal batteries, lithium–sulfur batteries, lithium–CO2 batteries, zinc–air batteries, etc., is proposed. This review is expected to provide theoretical guidance for design of novel kinds of ionic conductor bearing intrinsic framework structures and to boost further research enthusiasm for ion‐conducting COFs in rechargeable batteries.

Abstract:An attempt has been made to review and analyze the developments made during last few decades on the place of carbon in batteries. First identified as an anode of interest in the form of graphite, carbon has also made a place for itself as conductive agent added during electrode formulation or also as buffer with electrochemical active oxide processing by conversion. The focus is primarily on how to decrease the irreversibility of classical anode materials then how to increase its whole performance through nanostructures, mainly CNTs and graphene. We have identified post-lithium batteries as an opportunity for carbon as anode but also as support to reversible cathode material. Operando measurements may provide several breakthroughs and allow the rational and real design of carbonaceous materials for high power anodes in all types of batteries.

Abstract:Tremendous progress has been made in the field of electrochemical energy storage devices that rely on potassium-ions as charge carriers due to their abundant resources and excellent ion transport properties. Nevertheless, future practical developments not only count on advanced electrode materials with superior electrochemical performance, but also on competitive costs of electrodes for scalable production. In the past few decades, advanced carbon materials have attracted great interest due to their low cost, high selectivity, and structural suitability and have been widely investigated as functional materials for potassium-ion storage. This article provides an up-to-date overview of this rapidly developing field, focusing on recent advanced and mechanistic understanding of carbon-based electrode materials for potassium-ion batteries. In addition, we also discuss recent achievements of dual-ion batteries and conversion-type K-X (X=O2 , CO2 , S, Se, I2 ) batteries towards potential practical applications as high-voltage and high-power devices, and summarize carbon-based materials as the host for K-metal protection and possible directions for the development of potassium energy-related devices as well. Based on this, we bridge the gaps between various carbon-based functional materials structure and the related potassium-ion storage performance, especially provide guidance on carbon material design principles for next-generation potassium-ion storage devices.

Abstract:Rechargeable aluminum ion batteries (AIBs) have recently gained widespread research concern as energy storage technologies because of their advantages of being safe, economical, environmentally friendly, sustainable, and displaying high performance. Nevertheless, the intense Coulombic interactions between the Al3+ ions with high charge density and the lattice of the electrode body lead to poor cathode kinetics and limited cycle life in AIBs. This paper reviews the recent advances in the cathode design of AIBs to gain a comprehensive understanding of the opportunities and challenges presented by current AIBs. In addition, the advantages, limitations, and possible solutions of each cathode material are discussed. Finally, the future development prospect of the cathode materials is presented.

Abstract:Abstract Graphite‐derived carbon materials have been widely used in metal‐ion batteries due to their good mechanical and electrical properties, cost effectiveness, light weight, and environmental friendliness. Though natural graphite has been commercially used in lithium‐ion batteries, the small interlayer spacing hinders its application in other metal‐ion batteries. As such, numerous works have been done to enhance the metal‐ion storage capability of graphite and its derivatives. In this review, structural engineering on graphite including expanded graphite, graphite intercalation compounds and porous graphite, and the corresponding electrolyte engineering for lithium‐ion batteries, sodium ion batteries, potassium ion batteries, and dual ion batteries are summarized, aiming to make a comparison between various strategies and give a suggestion on future work in this area.

Emphasis is focused on the structural properties of intercalation electrode materials which are related to the rechargeable capacity and stability during cycling of Li ions. 118 references are given.

Abstract:The Construction of advanced electrode materials can push the boundaries of electrochemical performance of energy storage devices and accordingly open up a booming energy storage market. Typically, porous carbon is one of the most widely used materials in the field of batteries due to its attractive properties including large porosity, high electronic mobility, good mechanical strength and chemical stability, and ultrahigh specific surface area. This review focuses on diverse synthetic methods of multiscale porous carbon nanomaterials including direct carbonization, electrospinning, puffing, hydrothermal methods, and chemical vapor deposition, with and without templates, as well as their applications in different rechargeable secondary batteries. We summarize different dimensional porous carbon (1D, 2D and 3D) with controlled pore sizes and analyze their formation mechanisms. Additionally, the structure‐activity relationship of multiscale porous carbon nanomaterials is reviewed in detail. Meanwhile, we propose general guidelines to fabricate multiscale porous carbon nanomaterials with large surface area and high conductivity. Finally, future prospects and development trends on the advanced multiscale porous carbon nanomaterials toward construction of next‐generation batteries are presented. Black magic! In this review, diverse methods for the synthesis of multiscale porous carbon nanomaterials are summarized, including electrospinning, CVD, hydrothermal, hard‐template and template‐free methods. The application of such materials in different rechargeable secondary batteries is discussed. Furthermore, challenges and prospects for the development of next generation carbon based energy storage devices are emphasized.

Abstract:The demand for large-scale energy storage is increasing due to the decreasing non-renewable resources and deteriorating environmental pollution. Developing rechargeable batteries with high energy density and long cycle performance is an ideal choice to meet the demand of energy storage system. The development of excellent electrode particles is of great significance in the commercialization of next-generation batteries. The ideal electrode particles should balance raw material reserves, electrochemical performance, price and environmental protection. Among them, the development of electrode particulate materials with excellent electrochemical properties is the top priority at present. In this review, the typical researches of electrode materials are summarized in terms of crystal structure, morphology, pore structure, surface and interface regulation. Firstly, the structural characteristics and improvement methods of transition metal oxides, polyanionic compounds, Prussian blue and their analogues are introduced. Then, the different effects of particulate morphology, pore, surface and interface structure on the performance of electrode materials are discussed. For designing high-performance electrode materials, preparation route should be set according to the particle properties of the materials and the synergistic effect of various optimization methods should be adopted. At the same time, in addition to the electrode materials, other components of the rechargeable batteries, such as current collector, separator and electrolytes, should be optimized to improve the overall performance of the batteries. This review would provide important guiding principle for designing high-performance electrode particulate materials.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are highly promising electrode materials for next-generation rechargeable metal-ion batteries owing to their robust framework, abundant electrochemically active sites, well-defined and tunable pores and channels for metal ion transfer, and adjustable molecular structures for improving electrochemical performance. Moreover, COFs do not have the problems caused by expensive or toxic elements in conventional inorganic electrode materials or the cycling stability challenges existing in small organic molecules, and thus have great potential as electrode materials in next-generation rechargeable metal-ion batteries. We summarize the electrochemically active sites of these materials for charge storage, and most importantly, we focus on strategies for improving their electrochemical performance, including energy density, rate performance and cycling life by changing their frameworks, pores, active sites, and electronic structures. To fabricate high performance COF electrodes, much more effort is needed to improve their ionic and electronic conductivities, increase their operating voltage, and reveal their mechanisms of energy storage. This review may shed light on developing high performance COF electrode materials for next-generation rechargeable metal-ion batteries.

Abstract:Rechargeable lithium-oxygen batteries, especially the nonaqueous lithium-oxygen batteries have attracted much attention in recent years due to their high energy densities. However, few critical challenges remain to be overcome, including the low round-trip efficiency, high charge overpotential, poor cycling performance, decomposition of electrolyte, and instability of the carbon-based electrode. Among these, the instability of the carbon-based electrode is one of the major problems that hindered the practical application of the Li-O-2 batteries. Much work has been done to solve this problem and there are two widely-applied strategies: modification of carbon and designing a "carbon-free" cathode. In this review, we will introduce recent achievements of both strategies.
