Abstract:The presence of various contaminants in hydrogen for automotive polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) can cause detrimental FC system damage. One of the possible sources of fuel pollution is hydrogen storage and distribution facilities. Previously, various isomers of tetrachlorohexafluorobutane (C 4 Cl 4 F 6 ) were detected in hydrogen samples from a number of refueling stations. In general, halogenated compounds might have significant negative impact on PEMFC durability. However, the data on their structure/impact on PEMFC relationship is scarce, which complicates ranking of halocarbons in hydrogen quality standards. In this work, the impact of 0.2 ppm of 1,2,3,4-tetrachloro-1,1,2,3,4,4-hexafluorobutane on electrochemical performance of single FC under steady-state and dynamic test protocol of overall 900 h duration is reported for the first time to the best of our knowledge. Detailed in-situ electrochemical study revealed high irreversible voltage losses in a wide range of current densities, impedance growth and anode active surface area degradation provoked by the contaminant in comparison to the cell performance under neat H 2 . Ex-situ microscopy investigation confirmed thinning and densification of the active anode layer in presence of C 4 Cl 4 F 6 . Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis of the aged membrane electrode assemblies evidenced irreversible character of FC contamination by the halogenated impurity. This work contributes to defining a range of important halogenated hydrogen pollutants and to quantification of their impact on PEMFC performance.
