Abstract:Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) plays key roles in the energy efficiency of electro-catalytic systems. However, the sluggish kinetics and accumulated gas slugs under the industrial operation condition limit the application of OER. Herein, Mn, Fe co-doped nickel hydroxide with highly dense nano-sheets array is obtained through a simple and mild two-step etching strategy, which exhibits a remarkable OER performance. Doping Mn and Fe can modulate the electronic structure and redox behavior of active site, leading to an excellent intrinsic activity toward OER. Moreover, highly dense nanoparticle-nanosheet array structure is conducive to provide more active sites and inhibit the accumulation of gas slugs under industrial current density. Thus, the obtained catalyst provides an impressing current density of 1.8 A cm(-2) at a small overpotential of 370 mV and sustains the performance more than 100 h.

Abstract:Low-cost and efficient electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are the key to electrolytic water splitting of water to produce high purity hydrogen as a green energy source. Construction of nanoarrays on conductive substrates is an effective way to obtain high OER performance, due to the high surface area, enhanced mass diffusion and low interface resistance between catalysts and collectors. To achieve these merits, effective control in the composition, phase structure and size of nanoarrays is highly desirable. Herein, nanosheet arrays of single-phase Co3O4, NiO and Co3O4/NiO nanocomposites were directly grown on carbon cloth by an electrodeposition method. The composition can be finely tuned via changing the Ni2+/Co2+ ratio in the electrodeposition solution. The thickness and plane size of the nanosheets can be also well controlled. The effects of size, composition and phase on the OER activity were investigated in detail. The optimized nanosheet arrays were further coated with a NiO layer to achieve an even enhanced OER activity.

Abstract:Low-cost and highly effective transition metal oxides are being widely researched as one of the most promising electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, traditional transition metal oxides suffer from sluggish reaction kinetics due to their intrinsically poor electronic conductivity. Herein, we demonstrate a facile polydopamine-assisted carburization strategy for the confined synthesis of novel NiOx/Ni ultrathin heterostructured nanosheets. Benefiting from the large exposed surface area and fast charge transfer, the obtained ultrathin NiOx/Ni heterostructured nanosheets exhibit an overpotential of 358 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) and a small Tafel slope of 51 mV dec(-1), outperforming other reported representative nickel oxide based materials and commercial Ir/C catalysts. In addition, a sustainable and efficient overall water-splitting electrolyzer integrated ultrathin NiOx/Ni nanosheets with commercial Pt/C can be effectively and stably driven by solar cells.
Tailored heterostructured Ni3N–NiO nano-frameworks for boosting electrocatalytic oxygen evolution via surface-modulated plasma strategy

Abstract:The facile reconfiguration of phases plays a pivotal role in enhancing the electrocatalytic production of H 2 through heterostructure formation. While chemical methods have been explored extensively for this purpose, plasma-based techniques offer a promising avenue for achieving heterostructured nano-frameworks. However, the conventional plasma approach introduces complexities, leading to a multi-step fabrication process and challenges in precisely controlling partial surface structure modulation due to the intricate interaction environment. In our pursuit of heterostructures with optimized oxygen evolution reaction (OER) behavior, we have designed a facile auxiliary insulator-confined plasma system to directly attain a Ni 3 N–NiO heterostructure (hNiNO). By meticulously controlling the surface heating process during plasma processing, such approach allows for the streamlined fabrication of hNiNO nano-frameworks. The resulting nano-framework exhibits outstanding catalytic performance, as evidenced by its overpotential of 320 mV at a current density of 10 mA·cm −2 , in an alkaline environment. This stands in stark contrast to the performance of NiO-covered Ni 3 N fabricated using the conventional plasma method (sNiNO). Operando plasma diagnostics, coupled with numerical simulations, further substantiates the influence of surface heating due to auxiliary insulator confinement of the substrate on typical plasma parameters and the formation of the Ni 3 N–NiO nanostructure, highlighting the pivotal role of controlled surface temperature in creating a high-performance heterostructured electrocatalyst.

Abstract:Plasma treatment as an effective strategy can simultaneously achieve surface modification and heteroatom doping. Here, an N/P-doped NiFeV oxide nanosheet catalyst (N/P-NiFeVO) constructed by Ar/PH 3 plasma treatment is used to drive the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The introduction of V species leads to the formation of an ultrathin ordered nanostructure and exposure of more active sites. Compared to the 2D NiFeV LDH, the prepared N/P-NiFeVO by plasma treatment possesses multiple-valence Fe, V and Ni species, which regulate the intrinsic electronic structure and enable a superior catalytic activity for the OER in alkaline media. Specifically, the N/P-NiFeVO only require an overpotential of 273 mV to drive the current density of 100 mA cm −2 . What's more, the electrode can maintain a stable current density in a long-term oxygen evolution reaction (∼120 h) under alkaline conditions. This work provides new insight for the rational design of mixed metal oxides for OER electrocatalysts.

Interfacial electronic regulation on NiCo2O4 nanowires@NiFe-LDH nanosheets heterostructure for efficient oxygen evolution

Abstract:Developing cost-effective, highly efficient, and durable oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts is critical for improving the efficiency of hydrogen production from water splitting. Herein, we reported a novel OER catalyst composed of NiFe layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) nanosheets on NiCo2O4 nanowires (NiCo2O4@NiFe-LDH) supported on carbon cloth through the hydrothermal method and subsequent electrodeposition. The three-dimension (3D) hierarchical architecture facilitates the diffusion of electrolyte ions and O2 release. Experimental results demonstrate that the electrons transfer from the highly conductive NiCo2O4 nanowires to the NiFe-LDH sheets, which could expedite the charge transfer significantly. Importantly, the tunable adsorption/desorption nature of the oxygenated intermediates was achieved through the local delocalization of spin state at the heterointerface through the bridging O2-. Benefiting from the heterostructure and synergistic effects between different components, the optimized NiCo2O4@NiFe-LDH-2 exhibits excellent OER performance with a low overpotential of 270 mV at 50 mA cm−2, a small Tafel slope of 74 mV dec−1 and a good durability for 25 h in 1 M KOH. This work provides a novel approach to fabricate advanced OER catalysts and is expected to be extended to other materials for energy conversion applications.

Kinetically Controlled, Scalable Synthesis of γ-FeOOH Nanosheet Arrays on Nickel Foam toward Efficient Oxygen Evolution: The Key Role of In-Situ-Generated γ-NiOOH

Abstract:Layered γ-type iron oxyhydroxide (γ-FeOOH) is a promising material for various applications; however, its sheet-shaped structure often suffers from instability that results in aggregation and leads to inferior performance. Herein, a kinetically controlled hydrolysis strategy is proposed for the scalable synthesis of γ-FeOOH nanosheets arrays (NAs) with enhanced structural stability on diverse substrates at ambient conditions. The underlying mechanisms for the growth of γ-FeOOH NAs associated with their structural evolution are systematically elucidated by alkalinity-controlled synthesis and time-dependent experiments. As a proof-of-concept application, γ-FeOOH NAs are developed as electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), where the sample grown on nickel foam (NF) exhibits superior performance of high catalytic current density, small Tafel slope, and exceptional durability, which is among the top level of FeOOH-based electrocatalysts. Density functional theory calculations suggest that γ-NiOOH in situ generated from the electrooxidation of NF would induce charge accumulation on the Fe sites of γ-FeOOH NAs, leading to enhanced OER intermediates adsorption for water splitting. This work affords a new technique to rationally design and synthesize γ-FeOOH NAs for various applications.

Abstract:A novel nonprecious Fe2O3 nanoparticle decorated NiO nanosheet (Fe2O3 NPs@NiO NSs) composite has been obtained by a rapid one-pot electrochemical exfoliation method and can be used as an efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalyst. In the nanocomposite, the Fe2O3 NPs are uniformly anchored on the ultrathin graphene-like NiO nanosheets. At the same time, we also studied the influence of the Fe/Ni molar ratio on the morphology and catalytic activity. The Fe2O3 NPs@NiO NSs nanocomposite possessed a high BET surface area (194.1 m2 g-1), which is very conducive to the charge/mass transfer of electrolyte ions and O2. Owing to the unique two-dimensional (2D) heterostructures and rational Fe content, the as-prepared Fe2O3 NPs@NiO NSs show high catalytic performance, a low overpotential at 10 mA cm-2 (221 mV), a small Tafel slope (53.4 mV dec-1), and 2000 cycle and 20 h long-term durability. The introduction of Fe2O3 NPs is beneficial to accelerating charge transport, increasing the electrochemically active surface area (ECSA), and thus improving the release of oxygen bubbles from the electrode surface.

Abstract:The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) plays a vital role in electrolytic water splitting. It is urgent to explore highly active non-precious metal OER catalysts. Herein, the etching combined with the electrodeposition was used to synthesize the efficient Ni–Fe/p-CoAl catalyst, which exhibits ideal OER performance. A low overpotential of 282 mV and 296 mV are needed to achieve the current density of 50 mA/cm 2 and 100 mA/cm 2 in 1 M KOH, respectively. Moreover, the as-prepared catalyst shows good durability with no detectable degradation during long-term operation. The enhanced OER performance can be attributed to the large electrochemical surface area and the strong interaction between Ni–Fe nanosheets and active substrate.

Abstract:Nickel oxide (NiO) has emerged as a promising electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysis but undergoes insufficient active sites and unfavorable OH– adsorption properties. Herein, we develop an effective CeO2 and nitrogen co-decoration strategy to boost the OER performance of NiO (Ce/N-NiO) nanoparticles dramatically. The strong electron coupling among Ce/N-NiO nanoparticles provide exceptional facilities for the interface electron transfer from nitrogen-doped NiO to CeO2, and further induces the formation of rich Ni3+ surface, endowing it with abundant active sites. Besides, the surface electron reconfiguration energetically promotes the adsorption of OH–, resulting in fast reaction kinetics. As expected, the Ce/N-NiO sample shows superior OER property with a low overpotential of 250 mV at 10 mA cm−2. Particularly, when the current density exceeds 90 mA cm−2, the OER activity of Ce/N-NiO outstrips noble-metal-based RuO2. This co-decoration approach provides a practical guide for designing high-performance catalysts for OER and beyond.

Abstract:Although Ni‐based compounds perform well as oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts, several challenges hinder their potential applications, namely, complicated synthesis and pyrolysis, poor conductivity, and poor stability. Herein, a facile large‐scale synthesis strategy is designed for unique Fe‐doped Ni‐based metal‐organic polymer@carbon nanotubes (CNTs) composites that may be used as OER electrocatalysts without further treatment. The Ni1.95Fe‐MOP@CNTs deliver a small overpotential of 256 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm−2, and their Tafel slope is low to 58 mV dec−1. In addition, the catalyst displays high durability after a long‐term test of 60 000 s. Introducing Fe ions and CNTs into Ni‐based compounds increases the surface area and enhances the degree of graphitization and the composite conductivity, contributing to the excellent catalytic performance. The charge transfer reaction dynamics are explored using in situ differential electrochemical mass spectrometry. Surprisingly, the Ni1.95Fe‐MOP@CNTs demonstrate a Faraday efficiency of (≈92.7%) for O2 production. These findings pave a new way for synthesizing catalysts without post‐processing for water oxidation. A novel Fe doped Ni‐based metal‐organic‐polymer@carbon nanotubes (CNTs) composite is synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method. The introduction of both Fe ions and CNTs into the Ni‐based compounds increases the surface areas and enhances the degree of graphitization and the composite conductivity, which gives this material excellent oxygen evolution reaction performance.

Abstract:Combining transition metal oxide catalysts with conductive carbonaceous material is a feasible way to improve the conductivity. However, the electrocatalytic performance is usually not distinctly improved because the interfacial resistance between metal oxides and carbon is still large and thereby hinders the charge transport in catalysis. Herein, the conductive interface between poorly conductive NiO nanoparticles and semi‐conductive carbon nitride (CN) is constructed. The NiO/CN exhibits much‐enhanced oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance than corresponding NiO and CN in electrolytes of KOH solution and phosphate buffer saline, which is also remarkably superior over NiO/C, commercial RuO2, and mostly reported NiO‐based catalysts. X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy and extended X‐ray absorption fine structure spectrum reveal that a metallic Ni–N bond is formed between NiO and CN. Density functional theory calculations suggest that NiO and CN linked by a Ni–N bond possess a low Gibbs energy for OER intermediate adsorptions, which not only improves the transfer of charge but also promotes the transmission of mass in OER. The metal–nitrogen bonded conductive and highly active interface pervasively exists between CN and other transition metal oxides including Co3O4, CuO, and Fe2O3, making it promising as an inexpensive catalyst for efficient water splitting.

Hierarchical Nanocomposites of Nickel/iron-Layered Double Hydroxide Ultrathin Nanosheets Strong-Coupled with Nanocarbon Networks for Enhanced Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:Nickel/iron-layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) was hindered insufficient active sites, low inherent conductivity and poor stability. Herein, we innovatively report a facile and costeffective in situ synthesis strategy to prepare ultrathin NiFe-LDH nanosheets coupled onto hierarchical nano carbon networks consisting of carbon nanotube and graphene nanoribbon (NiFe-LDH/CNT@GNR) forming a porous interconnected nanocomposite. Partial unzipping of CNT induced by strong oxidation leads to the creation of GNR nanolayers tightly attached to the retained CNT framework, where GNR achieves high surface areas to load NiFe-LDH nanosheets and inner CNT still enables high conductivity. The CNT@GNR nanocarbon network not only enhances accessible electrochemical active area and mass transfer, but also provides high-efficiency conductive brackets with interlinked electron transfer pathways and achieve the strong interface coupling with NiFe-LDH nanosheets, synergistically resulting in rapid electrocatalytic kinetics. Moreover, NiFe-LDH nanosheets are tightly anchored on the surface of nanocarbon networks, greatly enhanced the stability of NiFe-LDH. NiFe-LDH/CNT@GNR exhibits remarkable OER activity with a low overpotential of 261 mV at 10 mA cm(-2), Tafel slope of 78 mV dec(-1), and high stability for up to 17 h, superior to most LDH-based OER catalysts reported, and even better than commercial RuO2. Therefore, the facile synthesis and excellent hierarchical architecture endow NiFe-LDH/CNT@GNR nanocomposites as advanced electrocatalysts for outstanding OER performance. Most importantly, the design provides a simple but universal strategy to yield high performance of NiFe-LDH catalysts, facilitating the commercial process of non-noble catalysts for OER.
Noble Metal-Free Co9S8 and NiS Composite Nanosheets for Enhanced Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:The electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is an important factor affecting the efficiency of many energy systems, such as hydrogen production from water. However, there are still some problems with the electrocatalytic OER, for example, high overpotential and sluggish kinetics. Herein, we prepare 15 nm-thick two-dimensional (2D) composite nanosheets containing Co9S8 and NiS on nickel foam. In the electrocatalytic OER, the overpotential at 50 mA cm(-2) of the composite nanosheets is 253 mV, with a Tafel slope of 43 mV dec(-1). The electrocatalytic efficiency of the composite nanosheets is much better, as compared with the pure Co9S8, pure NiS, and conventional IrO2 catalysts. The 2D composite nanosheets are flexible for electron transfer to trigger water splitting, thus enhancing the efficiency of the composite nanosheets in the electrocatalytic OER Besides, theoretical calculations imply that the Co9S8-NiS interface on the composite nanosheets is the active site for the adsorption and splitting of the water molecules and promotes the transfer of the electrons from both Co9S8 and NiS to the water molecule. This also favors for improving the efficiency of the composite nanosheets in the electrocatalytic OER. The results of the present work are beneficial for developing efficient noble metal-free catalysts for electrocatalysis.
Non-stoichiometric NiOx nanocrystals for highly efficient electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction

Abstract:Designing a low–cost, large–scale and highly–active electrolytic oxygen evolution catalyst is still a huge challenge. Pure stoichiometric NiO is inevitably an insulator, which hampers the electron transfer and transport in catalysis. While non-stoichiometric NiOx is a wide bandgap p-type semiconductor. The conductive interface of non-stoichiometric NiOx NCs is successfully fabricated, which the p-type conductivity of NiOx originates from two positive charge compensation which favored Ni2+ vacancies. The valence band (VB) of NiOx is well adjustable so that the strong electron interaction induces electronic structure modulation, which optimizes the binding energy of *OOH intermediates. In the alkaline water splitting, non-stoichiometric NiOx NCs exhibit remarkable performance toward OER with an overpotential of 330 mV (1.56 V vs. RHE) at 10 mA cm−2 and a Tafel slope of 105.17 mV dec−1, as well as an extraordinary robust stability. Detailed investigations show that the high density of defects combine with oxygen atoms to form NiOOH species, which are conducive to the OER kinetics. This work offers valuable generalized insights for constructing robust non-stoichiometric metal oxides electrocatalysts and encouraging for large-scale practical applications.

Synergizing In-Grown Ni3N/Ni Heterostructured Core and Ultrathin Ni3N Surface Shell Enables Self-Adaptive Surface Reconfiguration and Efficient Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:Searching for highly active, alkaline-stable and low-cost non-noble metal-based oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts with disruptively low overpotential and outstanding overall performance is of great value and yet considerable challenge, due to the sluggish OER kinetics reported for almost all known materials systems. To accelerate the sluggish OER kinetics by a self-adaptive surface reconfiguration approach, herein, we have purposely designed a strongly coupled core@shell nanostructured precatalyst consisting of an in-grown Ni3N/Ni heterostructured core and an ultrathin Ni3N shell (Ni3N/Ni@Ni3N) via a step-by-step thermal nitridation route. The Ni3N/Ni@Ni3N thus-obtained delivers an ultralow overpotential (eta) of 229 mV at 10 cm(geo)(-2) , with the remarkable 17-, 37and 20-fold enhancements in catalytic current density per active surface area at eta = 270 mV, compared favorably to the invidivual Ni3N and Ni alone as well as the commercial RuO2, respectively, together with a much reduced Tafel slope of 55 mV dec(-1). In reponse to the change in applied potential to the Ni3N/ Ni@Ni3N precatalyst during the OER process, a self-adaptive surface reconfiguration into NiOOH species takes place, which is responsible for the high catalytic activity observed. It is also evidenced by both the in-situ Raman spectrometry and ex-situ electron microscopy studies. To further support the experimental observation, density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that the interfacial electron transfer from NiOOH to Ni3N produces positive-charged Ni cations as the highly active sites to substantially lower the energy barriers for adsoprtion/desportion of the OER intermediates.

Abstract:Developing cost-effective electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and elucidating the structural transformation is urgent but remains a significant challenge. Here, we report a scalable approach to prepare welldefined Ni nanoparticles supported by nitrogen-doped carbon (Ni/NC), which possess superior catalytic activity and durability for OER, especially for the sample pyrolyzed at 600 degrees C. Moreover, the dynamic surface reconstruction of as-prepared catalysts during OER was detailedly investigated by ex-situ characterizations and operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy combined with the difference method that is a novel technique to probe the subtle structural changes. Our findings demonstrate that a surface oxidation to Ni(OH)2 on Ni nanoparticles occurs at the beginning of OER, and then a reversible phase transitions between Ni(OH)2 and NiOOH depends on the applied potential. Thus, this work develops a new method for preparing low-cost Ni-based electrocatalyst and sheds light on the direct observation of surface structure evolution during the OER.

Abstract:Energy storage technologies are developed over the past decades, such as metal-air batteries. The large-scale application of these devices is finite due to slow kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In order to solve this issue, plasma enhanced atomic layer deposition (PE-ALD) is used to synthesize high performance nano-oxide (NiOx@Co3O4/CC) electrocatalyst for OER applications. Herein, the cobalt oxide (Co3O4) nanowire arrays are grown on oxygen plasma-treated carbon-cloth (CC) and then a thin layer (~1.2 nm) of nickel oxide (NiOx) is deposited on the Co3O4/CC through PE-ALD method. The electrocatalyst of two transition metal oxides plays a leading role in improving the OER performance and stability. The overpotential for OER of NiOx@Co3O4/CC electrocatalyst is 360 mV at 10 mA cm−2, which is much lower than that of Co3O4/CC (420 mV) and comparable to commercial RuO2 (350 mV) electrocatalyst. Moreover, the stability of NiOx@Co3O4/CC electrocatalyst is also improved, which only 8.85% of the initial current is loss after 40,000 s. It is demonstrated that PE-ALD synthesis method provides a facile approach to fabricate highly efficient nano-oxide electrocatalysts for OER in energy storage devices.

Abstract:Oxygen evolution reaction is an essential but kinetically sluggish step in many energy storage and conversion processes and therefore is in pursuit of highly efficient and stable catalysts. Although nanosized transition-metal-based oxides/hydroxides exhibit high catalytic activity toward the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), many of them suffer from low stability at an anode current density in industrial scale. Herein, by combining a rapid epitaxial formation method with dynamic bubble-templated electrodeposition, we successfully developed single crystalline NiFeCu oxide catalysts with a hierarchical porous structure. It was found that the structure can facilitate fast electron transportation for the catalysts and retard the diffusion of the O atoms to the inner metallic current collector. The hierarchical pores inherited from the hydrogen bubble templates built ideal channels for the massive and rapid release of oxygen bubbles. As a consequence, the NiFeCu oxides catalyzed the OER more efficiently and steadily than the commercial RuO2 catalyst at an anode current density in industrial scale (300 mA/cm2). This work, by resolving the durability concerns for nanosized oxides, offers a series of highly efficient and stable catalysts for OER and a structure building strategy to boost the catalytic activity and stability for nonconductive catalysts.
