Abstract:Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) plays key roles in the energy efficiency of electro-catalytic systems. However, the sluggish kinetics and accumulated gas slugs under the industrial operation condition limit the application of OER. Herein, Mn, Fe co-doped nickel hydroxide with highly dense nano-sheets array is obtained through a simple and mild two-step etching strategy, which exhibits a remarkable OER performance. Doping Mn and Fe can modulate the electronic structure and redox behavior of active site, leading to an excellent intrinsic activity toward OER. Moreover, highly dense nanoparticle-nanosheet array structure is conducive to provide more active sites and inhibit the accumulation of gas slugs under industrial current density. Thus, the obtained catalyst provides an impressing current density of 1.8 A cm(-2) at a small overpotential of 370 mV and sustains the performance more than 100 h.

Abstract:The rational design of high-efficient non-noble metal electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reactions (OER) is of significance in electrochemical energy conversion. However, such low-cost but highly active electrocatalysts remain poorly developed because of the daunting synthetic challenge. Here, the synthesis of NiSe2/Fe3O4 nanotubes via a facile self-templating strategy, which manifests unique tetragonal morphology, asymmetric hollow interior, and unusual but adaptable heteroepitaxy structure, is reported. Benefiting from sufficient active sites and their improved activity around the heterointerface, accompanied by the good conductivity, the NiSe2/Fe3O4 nanotubes exhibit as a superior OER electrocatalyst, which affords the current density of 10 mA cm(-2) at a very small overpotential of 199 mV, high attainable current density beyond 200 mA cm(-2), and mass activity of 984.5 A g(-1), as well as excellent stability for 100 h in the alkaline media. This work provides a unique synthetic pathway to fabricate superior OER electrocatalysts by optimizing their composition and architecture.

Abstract:A novel nonprecious Fe2O3 nanoparticle decorated NiO nanosheet (Fe2O3 NPs@NiO NSs) composite has been obtained by a rapid one-pot electrochemical exfoliation method and can be used as an efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalyst. In the nanocomposite, the Fe2O3 NPs are uniformly anchored on the ultrathin graphene-like NiO nanosheets. At the same time, we also studied the influence of the Fe/Ni molar ratio on the morphology and catalytic activity. The Fe2O3 NPs@NiO NSs nanocomposite possessed a high BET surface area (194.1 m2 g-1), which is very conducive to the charge/mass transfer of electrolyte ions and O2. Owing to the unique two-dimensional (2D) heterostructures and rational Fe content, the as-prepared Fe2O3 NPs@NiO NSs show high catalytic performance, a low overpotential at 10 mA cm-2 (221 mV), a small Tafel slope (53.4 mV dec-1), and 2000 cycle and 20 h long-term durability. The introduction of Fe2O3 NPs is beneficial to accelerating charge transport, increasing the electrochemically active surface area (ECSA), and thus improving the release of oxygen bubbles from the electrode surface.

Abstract:Low-cost and highly effective transition metal oxides are being widely researched as one of the most promising electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, traditional transition metal oxides suffer from sluggish reaction kinetics due to their intrinsically poor electronic conductivity. Herein, we demonstrate a facile polydopamine-assisted carburization strategy for the confined synthesis of novel NiOx/Ni ultrathin heterostructured nanosheets. Benefiting from the large exposed surface area and fast charge transfer, the obtained ultrathin NiOx/Ni heterostructured nanosheets exhibit an overpotential of 358 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) and a small Tafel slope of 51 mV dec(-1), outperforming other reported representative nickel oxide based materials and commercial Ir/C catalysts. In addition, a sustainable and efficient overall water-splitting electrolyzer integrated ultrathin NiOx/Ni nanosheets with commercial Pt/C can be effectively and stably driven by solar cells.
In situ assembly of Ni3S2 nanosheets encapsulated with NiFe(oxy)hydroxides for efficient water oxidation

Abstract:Morphology control plays a pivotal role in achieving an exceptionally efficient electrocatalyst with abundant active sites and outstanding electrical conductivity. In this study, we employed a sophisticated chemical nanoengineering technique to fabricate an exquisitely thin NiFe(OH)x electrocatalyst on Ni3S2 nanosheets. Firstly, the Ni3S2 nanosheets were synthesized through an innovative in situ one-step sulfurization reaction of the Ni(OH)2 nanosheets grown on Ni foam. Subsequently, a remarkable ultrathin layer of NiFe(OH)x was precisely deposited onto the surface of the Ni3S2 to form a captivating core-shell structure using a chemical dipping method. The resulting electrode, denoted as NiFe(OH)x/Ni3S2/NF, exhibited exceptional electrocatalytic activity and durability towards the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), owing to its expansive specific surface area, rapid electron transport, and robust interlayer bonding. Notably, this electrode achieved an impressive current density of 100 mA cm-2 at an astonishingly low overpotential of 218 mV while maintaining a low Tafel slope of 37.9 mV dec-1 and remarkable stability for up to 12 days in 1 M KOH aqueous solution. This work presents an alluring novel approach for constructing highly efficient ultrathin catalysts for water splitting.
Scalable Synthesis of NiFe‐LDH/Ni9S8/NF Nanosheets by Two‐Step Corrosion for Efficient Oxygen Electrocatalysis

Abstract:Scalable synthesis of non‐noble‐metal‐based electrocatalysts achieved by energy‐saving and cost‐effective strategies towards efficient oxygen evolution is primary significant for the practical application of water splitting, however, it is still a great challenge. In this work, a two‐step corrosion engineering is proposed to construct ultrathin NiFe‐LDH and high‐conductivity Ni9S8 composites (denoted as NiFe‐LDH/Ni9S8/NF) at room temperature. By ingeniously using the corrosion reaction between nickel foam (NF) and S2O32− under acidic condition, Ni9S8 was firstly formed on the surface of Ni foam. Then, ultrathin NiFe‐LDH nanosheets were precipitated on the Ni9S8 surface through an ultrafast Fe2+ ions‐assisted corrosion treatment. Featured with fast electron/mass transfer rates, sheet‐stacked structure, and superior hydrophilicity, NiFe‐LDH/Ni9S8/NF exhibits an enhanced oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity with low overpotentials of 223 and 265 mV at 10 and 100 mA cm−2, respectively. Such feasible, economical, and scale‐up synthesis method might open a new avenue for the wide‐scale fabrication of materials for various electrochemical applications.

Abstract:We demonstrate a straightforward method for the synthesis of the high-performance double-hydroxide (Fe(OH)3‖Ni(OH)2) nanoporous composite electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). A nanoporous Ni(OH)2 film was electrochemically deposited using water electrolysis, in which hydrogen bubbles acted as a dynamic template, and the generated hydroxide ions caused precipitation of Ni2+ ions from the solution. The capillary action of nanopores was used to introduce Fe3+ ions that were precipitated in the nanopores by dipping into a KOH solution. A series of characterization methods and electrochemical techniques were used to characterize the physicochemical properties and electrocatalytic behavior of the prepared catalyst toward OER. Experimental results suggest that the incorporation of Fe(OH)3 into the nanoporous Ni(OH)2 film to a level of ~4%mol can significantly enhance its electrocatalytic activity toward OER. The OER current density observed for as-synthesized Fe(OH)3‖Ni(OH)2 was higher by a factor of 3.9 compared to the original nanoporous Ni(OH)2. The enhanced performance resulted from the interfacial synergistic effects between the two hydroxides, likely due to the improved electronic structure and increased density of oxygen vacancies. Our synthetic method is quite simple, cost-effective, and holds great potential for practical application in water electrolysis.

Abstract:The development of efficient and cost-effective oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts is crucial for clean energy conversion and storage devices, such as water-splitting, CO2 reduction, and metal-air batteries. Herein, we report an efficient 2-dimensional OER catalyst of ultrathin nickel-iron sulfide nanosheets (NiFeS-NS). Dodecanethiol is employed in the synthesis, which prohibits the growth along the Z-axis, thus a nanosheet is obtained. The NiFeS-NS shows high OER catalytic activity, which only requires a small overpotential of 273 mV to achieve the OER current density of 10 mA/cm2 in alkaline electrolyte, and almost no decay after 150 h of chronopotentiometry test. The high performance is attributed to the 2-dimensional structure, the synergistic effect from the Ni and Fe components which promotes the formation of the high valence Ni species, and the tuning effect from the in-situ generated sulfate doping. This work demonstrates the advantages of the 2-dimensional sulfides in electrocatalysis.

Abstract:The development of low cost and high‐efficiency electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is essential for a number of applications in the field of energy conversion and storage. Herein, we present an efficient OER electrocatalyst in the form of thin (Fe,Ni) 9 S 8 nanosheets (FNS NSs) anchored on a three‐dimensional (3D) conductive substrate of Fe nanoislands/Carbon Cloth (Fe NIs/CC). The resulting electrode exhibits an impressive OER performance with a low overpotential of 147 mV at 10 mA cm ‐2 and a Tafel slope of 29.8 mV dec ‐1 in 1 M KOH alkaline solution. The enhanced performance is ascribed to the thin nanosheets structure with ample active sites, the high conductivity of the substrate and its 3D structure, which endows the electrode with a large specific surface area and more catalytic active sites. The study on kinetic process reveals that the incorporation of Fe from the substrate can reduce the kinetic barrier of OER, allowing for a faster reaction rate.

Abstract:The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a vital proton donor for various clean energy technologies. Here, we synthesized IrOx-decorated ultrathin NiFe-LDH nanosheets (thickness 1-2 nm) by a one-step co-precipitation method. The IrOx was uniformly dispersed on the surface of ultrathin NiFe-LDH nanosheets, greatly increasing the active sites and the electric conductivity for NiFe-LDH. As a result, the IrOx/U-NiFe-LDH exhibited excellent OER performance with a low overpotential (236 mV) and a Tafel slope (74.3 mA dec-1).

Abstract:Developing effective and robust electrocatalysts that are applicable for intense conditions is promising for variable industrial oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, we have developed a simple hydrothermal strategy to construct a three dimensional nanoflower-like VOx nanosheets (VOx/NiS/NF) that utilizes S-modified NF as substrate. NiS/NF can provide not only high-surface area for the growth of VOx but also better conductivity and stability derived from NiS. XRD shows the formation of amorphous VOx supported on NiS/NF. XPS confirms the existence and valence state of V, Ni and S. EDX and SEM elemental mapping reveal the composition and great distribution of V, O, Ni and S. SEM and TEM show that the thin VOx nanosheets covered on the surface of NiS/NF uniformly, which implying more exposed active sites. OER measurements display that VOx/NiS/NF has the outstanding catalytic activity with the lower overpotential (330 mV, 50 mA cm(-2)), smaller tafel slope (121 mV dec(-1)) and lower value of semicircle of EIS than VOx/NF. The modification of NF may be the key for enhancement performances for OER due to reduced charge transfer resistance. The strong durability of VOx/NiS/NF may be attributed to the tighter integration between VOx and NiS/NF in alkaline electrolytes. The impressive results may provide a new strategy to design suitable substrate with good dispersion and conductivity to prepare effective electrocatalysts for OER. Abstract:The synthesis of nanostructured transition metal compounds with adjustable components are often challenging due to the involvement of multiple synthetic procedures or complex manipulations. In this work, a one-step selfregulating acid-etching strategy is employed for nickel iron-layered double hydroxide (NiFe LDH). A twodimensional (2D) NiFe LDH nanosheet is speedy and efficiently formed. This as-prepared NiFe LDH exhibits electrocatalytic activity for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). This approach avoids numerous structural design challenges and provides highly active sites and a robust interface between catalyst and support. As a result, 2D NiFe LDH electrodes demonstrate highly efficient OER performance with a low overpotential of 300 mV and a Tafel slope of 70.6 mV dec- 1 at a current density of 100 mA cm -2.

Abstract:Due to the dimensional confinement, two-dimensional (2D) nanostructures have exposed more active atoms, allowing faster electron transport; Furthermore, Doping is widely used to modulate the local electronic structure within the material. In this work, we proposed a strategy for the facile synthesis of ultrathin transition metal-doped nanosheets. The 2D Mn/RuO2 nanosheets prepared by rapid thermal annealing (RTA), required an overpotential of only 185 mV to reach a current density of 10 mA cm−2 under acidic solution, which was much lower than that of commercial IrO2. This finding provides a promising strategy for the reduction of precious metal content and the preparation of ultrathin nanosheet, and brings inspiration for the design and fabrication of other advanced nano-catalysts.

Abstract:The preparation approaches of highly efficient FeNi (oxy)hydroxide electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are usually complicated and high cost. Here, we develop a simple and cost-effective corrosion method to in situ fabricate the amorphous FeNi (oxy)hydroxides with an optimal Fe/Ni atomic ratio as highly efficient OER electrocatalysts. The corrosion process took place in a HCl solution at room temperature, which simultaneously changed the chemistry and morphology of the FeNi (oxy)hydroxide electrocatalysts. The as-fabricated amorphous FeNi (oxy)hydroxide nanosheets exhibit enhanced electrocatalytic performance in the alkaline OER process with a low overpotential of 231 mV at a current density of 20 mA cm–2, a Tafel slope of 62.9 mV dec–1, and long-term (more than 60 h) durability, which is superior to most electrocatalysts reported and the commercial catalyst IrO2. Abstract:Nickel/iron-layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) was hindered insufficient active sites, low inherent conductivity and poor stability. Herein, we innovatively report a facile and costeffective in situ synthesis strategy to prepare ultrathin NiFe-LDH nanosheets coupled onto hierarchical nano carbon networks consisting of carbon nanotube and graphene nanoribbon (NiFe-LDH/CNT@GNR) forming a porous interconnected nanocomposite. Partial unzipping of CNT induced by strong oxidation leads to the creation of GNR nanolayers tightly attached to the retained CNT framework, where GNR achieves high surface areas to load NiFe-LDH nanosheets and inner CNT still enables high conductivity. The CNT@GNR nanocarbon network not only enhances accessible electrochemical active area and mass transfer, but also provides high-efficiency conductive brackets with interlinked electron transfer pathways and achieve the strong interface coupling with NiFe-LDH nanosheets, synergistically resulting in rapid electrocatalytic kinetics. Moreover, NiFe-LDH nanosheets are tightly anchored on the surface of nanocarbon networks, greatly enhanced the stability of NiFe-LDH. NiFe-LDH/CNT@GNR exhibits remarkable OER activity with a low overpotential of 261 mV at 10 mA cm(-2), Tafel slope of 78 mV dec(-1), and high stability for up to 17 h, superior to most LDH-based OER catalysts reported, and even better than commercial RuO2. Therefore, the facile synthesis and excellent hierarchical architecture endow NiFe-LDH/CNT@GNR nanocomposites as advanced electrocatalysts for outstanding OER performance. Most importantly, the design provides a simple but universal strategy to yield high performance of NiFe-LDH catalysts, facilitating the commercial process of non-noble catalysts for OER.

Abstract:Owing to the high demand for clean and renewable energy technologies, several studies have focused on developing economically feasible, highly effective, and stable non-precious electrocatalysts for promoting the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). This development has stimulated an expansion of investigative quests and indicated the importance of advancing electrocatalytic research in this field. Through a facile and efficient method, Ni nanoparticles were uniformly embedded into nanoporous carbon nanorods (Ni-NCN), which are subsequently electrodeposited on CoFe-layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanosheets to produce highly efficient Ni-NCN/CoFe-LDH composites used for OER. The composite exhibited excellent catalytic activity toward OER owing to its low overpotential (ƞ10 mA = 280 mV), small Tafel slope (42 mV dec<sup>-1</sup>), and excellent durability. The Ni-NCN/CoFe-LDH catalyst exhibited higher OER activity owing to its uniformly dispersed Ni nanoparticles, large specific surface area, enhanced electron transport, and synergistic effect of multiple composites. Additionally, the enhanced synergistic effect of Ni-NCN promoted higher OER performance compared with Ni-undoped carbon nanorod/LDH, indicating that the Ni dopant and LDH significantly contributed to the overall OER performance. The synergistic effect of multiple composites significantly contributed to the excellent OER performance, indicating their potential as OER catalyst.
