Abstract:Metal-organic complex (MOC) multilayers are, for the first time, conformally constructed on Ni foam (NF) via a three-component sequential layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly approach and converted to three-dimensional (3-D) NF-supported interconnected CoO nanoparticles (NPs)/N-doped carbon nanohybrid multilayers via calcination. The obtained nanoarchitecture delivers an overpotential of 318 mV to achieve 10 mA cm(-2) and a Tafel slope of 46.1 mV dec(-1). This activity is superior to most reported oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts, and even much better than those of Ir- and Ru-based ones measured under the same conditions (0.1 M KOH). Additionally, this electrode undergoes negligible potential and current change after 19.8 h chronopotentiometric measurement and 300 cyclic voltammetry cycles. The outstanding catalytic performance is mainly attributed to the ultrasmall and high-density CoO NPs embedded in Ndoped carbon uniformly assembled on the 3-D substrate significantly increasing electrochemically accessible active sites and durability and the N-doped carbon greatly promoting intrinsic activity of CoO. This work not only creates 3-D highly tunable networked nanostructured electrodes with excellent durability for high-efficiency electrocatalysis but also develops a facile, economical, and extremely versatile strategy to controllably self-assemble conformal MOC-based multilayers with multifunctionality and superior performance on essentially any substrate at the molecular level for broad applications.

Abstract:Morphology control plays a pivotal role in achieving an exceptionally efficient electrocatalyst with abundant active sites and outstanding electrical conductivity. In this study, we employed a sophisticated chemical nanoengineering technique to fabricate an exquisitely thin NiFe(OH)x electrocatalyst on Ni3S2 nanosheets. Firstly, the Ni3S2 nanosheets were synthesized through an innovative in situ one-step sulfurization reaction of the Ni(OH)2 nanosheets grown on Ni foam. Subsequently, a remarkable ultrathin layer of NiFe(OH)x was precisely deposited onto the surface of the Ni3S2 to form a captivating core-shell structure using a chemical dipping method. The resulting electrode, denoted as NiFe(OH)x/Ni3S2/NF, exhibited exceptional electrocatalytic activity and durability towards the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), owing to its expansive specific surface area, rapid electron transport, and robust interlayer bonding. Notably, this electrode achieved an impressive current density of 100 mA cm-2 at an astonishingly low overpotential of 218 mV while maintaining a low Tafel slope of 37.9 mV dec-1 and remarkable stability for up to 12 days in 1 M KOH aqueous solution. This work presents an alluring novel approach for constructing highly efficient ultrathin catalysts for water splitting.

Abstract:Nickel(II) sulfide (NiS) nanosheets with a thickness of 10 nm and a size of 200 nm were facilely grown on stainless steel (SLS) meshes via a one-pot hydrothermal method. This unique construction renders an excellent electrical contact between the porous film of active NiS sheets and the highly conductive substrate, which exhibits a superior catalytic activity toward oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The NiS@SLS electrocatalyst exhibits an unusually low overpotential of 297 mV (i.e., 1.524 V vs RHE) at a current density of 11 mA·cm(-2), and an extra small Tafel slope of only 47 mV·dec(-1) proves an even more competitive performance at high to very high current densities. This performance compares very favorably to other Ni-based catalysts and even to the precious state-of-the-art IrO2 or RuO2 catalyst.

Abstract:Nickel sulphides stand out as promising, earth-abundant transition metal chalcogenides with significant potential for electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reactions. However, the realisation of their full potential is hindered by challenges in controlling the size, morphology and phase of nickel sulphide nanocrystals, limiting their broader application. In this study, we introduce a novel method for synthesising two-dimensional Ni9S8 phase-dominated NixS nanoplates via a precisely controlled cation exchange approach. Through meticulous adjustments in surface ligands and reaction temperature, we effectively fine-tune the reaction kinetics, resulting in the production of NixS nanoplates with well-preserved morphology and high crystallinity. Notably, the resulting NixS nanoplates synthesised at 170°C exhibit exceptional performance in oxygen evolution reactions, boasting a low overpotential of 329 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 and a Tafel slope of 52 mV. These findings not only advance our understanding of nickel sulphide nanomaterials but also hold promise for their practical applications in efficient and sustainable electrocatalytic processes.

Abstract:Large surface area and unique surface chemical environment are two critical factors for a catalyst, both of which can highly influence the catalytic activity. In this study, we present a small molecular amine mediated one-step approach to directly synthesize thin cobalt sulfide nanosheets by employing sulfur powder and CoCl2 as the reaction precursor. The surface chemical environment including cobalt oxidation state of the obtained cobalt sulfide materials can be in situ finely tuned by sulfur dosage. The as-prepared and optimized cobalt sulfide nanosheets with thickness of 5-12 nm have a favorable surface chemical environment including amounts of highly active Co(III) species, easy transform of Co(II) to Co(III), richness of defects, and higher electrochemical surface area, which induce enhanced catalytic activity for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline media. When used as an electrocatalyst, the optimized cobalt sulfide catalyst offers an overpotential of 312 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) and mass loading of 0.37-0.45 mg cm(-2), which can remain constant for at least 36 h of OER operation in 1 M KOH electrolyte. This electrocatalytic activity is better than most of reported monometallic cobalt sulfide materials and commercial RuO2.

Abstract:The efficiency of electrolytic water splitting is hampered by the slow kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Addressing this challenge, we present a novel catalyst with rich Ni3S4/FeNi2S4 heterostructures anchored metal-organic framework-derived nanosheets interconnected by carbon nanotubes (NiFe-S@CNT). The NiFe-S@CNT electrocatalyst shows an ultralow overpotential of 246 mV at a current density of 10 mA/cm2 (eta 10), surpassing the benchmark RuO2 (eta 10 = 291 mV) as well as many reported sulfide electrocatalysts. The strong heterointerface interaction between Ni3S4 and FeNi2S4 induce synergistic effects, modifying the electronic structure of active sites and generating a large number of lattice defects. Additionally, the carbon nanotubes skeleton facilitates efficient electron transfer and enhances electrical conductivity during the catalytic process. Moreover, the metal-organic framework derivative inherits a porous structure, aiding in electrolyte penetration and efficient bubble release. This study provides a facile and scalable strategy to develop nonprecious transition-metal-based OER catalysts with abundant heterointerfaces and active sites for efficient water splitting.

Abstract:Synthesis of highly efficient and stable electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction remains a big challenge. Herein, we rationally designed a novel route, involving hydrothermal electrodeposition of Ni/Zn alloy and in situ electrochemical dealloying followed by sulfuration, to fabricate three-dimensional mesoporous nickel sulfide nanosheets assembled tightly on Ni foam for oxygen evolution reaction. The mesoporous Ni3S2 nanosheets/Ni foam exhibited a highly mesoporous structure with a specific surface area of 60.1 m(2) g(-1) and showed a low overpotential of 223 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) with a small Tafel slope of 60.5 mV dec(-1); this overpotential is superior to that of IrO2/Ni foam. As-prepared Ni3S2 nanosheets/Ni foam achieved a high turnover frequency value of 0.61 mol O-2 s(-1) at an overpotential of 500 mV. Impressively, the as-obtained catalyst possessed excellent conductivity and outstanding stability for over 240 h. The superior catalytic property could be ascribed to the rational synthetic process, morphology-controlled mesoporous structure, and highly exposed active sites. This paper presents an efficient route to fabricate porous nanosheets as stable and efficient electrocatalyst for water oxidation.

Abstract:The development of cheap and effective catalysts is one of the major challenges to boost up electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In this study, we synthesized phosphorus incorporated nickel sulfide (Ni3S2@Ni5P4/NF) composite via a simple one-step hydrothermal treatment for electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction in basic media. The newly synthesized Ni3S2@Ni5P4/NF composite catalyst shows a remarkable OER activity with an overpotential of 399 mV at a current density of 50 mA cm−2. Ni3S2@Ni5P4/NF also shows a Tafel slope of 75 mV dec-1 with long-term stability for more than 15 h in alkaline media. The enhanced electrocatalytic activity of current system is among best catalysts based on Nickle sulfides and nickel phosphides according to our knowledge. Current enhancement can be attributed to fast electron transfer due to synergistic effect of Ni3S2 and Ni5P4 in the composite.

Abstract:Exploring high-performance and stable transition metal electrocatalysts is prerequisite for boosting overall water splitting efficiency. In this study, iron (Fe), manganese (Mn) co-doped three-dimensional (3D) Ni3S2 nanoflowers were in situ assembled by many inter-connected 2D nanosheets on nickel foam (NF) via hydrothermal and sulfuration treatment. By virtue of the introduced Fe and Mn elements and unique flower-like structures, the as-prepared catalyst displayed high activity and stability for oxygen evolution reaction (OER), coupled with a small Tafel slope (63.29 mV dec−1) and a low overpotential of 216 mV to reach the current density of 30 mA cm−2. This study would shed some lights for facile synthesis of exceptional OER catalyst by tailoring the electronic structure and doping transition metal(s).

Abstract:Developing highly active, earth-abundant, and durable electrocatalysts is desired but challenging for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In this work, we design an electrocatalyst of the edge-rich nickel sulfide arrays on the nickel foam (Ni3S2 NSs-NF) by a facile yet efficient wet-chemical method. Benefiting from the three-dimensional nanostructure with numerous active edges, the prepared Ni3S2 NSs-NF exhibits superior OER performance in alkaline conditions. An in-depth study reveals that the real active sites toward OER are the in situ formed heterogenous Ni3S2-NiOOH. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate the density of state (DOS) of the Ni3S2-NiOOH heterojunction near the Fermi level is enhanced, contributing to higher electronic conductivity. As a result, the Ni3S2 NSs-NF with abundant Ni3S2-NiOOH heterojunctions exhibits an efficient electrochemical activity toward OER in alkaline conditions. The Ni3S2 NSs-NF electrode shows an overpotential of 244 mV at 10 mA cm−2 with a Tafel slope of 75 mV dec−1 and possesses ultrastable performance even at 100 mA cm−2.
Metallic Ni3N Quantum Dots As a Synergistic Promoter for NiO Nanosheet Toward Efficient Oxygen Reduction Electrocatalysis

Abstract:The development of efficient and stable transition-metal-based electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in fuel cells is highly desirable, yet a great challenge remains. Here, we report novel Ni3N quantum dot (QD)/NiO heterostructure material, fabricated by immobilization of metallic Ni3N QDs onto the surface of NiO nanosheet, as a highly active and durable electrocatalyst for efficient oxygen reduction performance. The electrochemical characterizations and theoretical calculations reveal that a strong interface coupling effect in Ni3N QDs/NiO heterostructure is realized by the interfacial hetero Ni species, synergistically accelerating the dissociation of adsorbed water molecules and reductive kinetics of adsorbed oxygen molecules during the ORR process. Hence, the developed Ni3N QDs/NiO heterostructure yields prominent oxygen reduction performance with a small half-wave potential (E-1/2) of 0.76 V and high kinetic current density (J(k)) of 15.4 mA cm(-2) at 0.7 V, much superior to those of NiO nanosheet (0.65 V; 0.81 mA cm(-2)) and comparable to those of commercial Pt/C catalyst (0.80 V; 13 mA cm(-2)). In addition, the catalyst shows long-term catalytic stability with robust methanol tolerance, serving as a promising noble-metal-free ORR catalyst for fuel cells.

Abstract:This study employed a one-step hydrothermal process to synthesize Ni3S2/Fe3O4 nanoblocks in situ on nickel foam (NF). The resulting Ni3S2/Fe3O4/NF catalyst demonstrates exceptional electrocatalytic activity for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and robust long-term stability. It achieves a low overpotential of only 220 mV for a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) with a Tafel slope of 54.1 mV dec(-1) and remains stable in 1.0 M KOH for 66 h. The binder -free self-supported three-dimensional nanoblocks enhance the reaction region and long-term stability. Electronic interactions between Fe3O4 and Ni3S2, coupled with heterogeneous interfaces, optimize the electronic structure, fostering the formation of highly reactive species. Density-functional theory (DFT) calculations confirm that Ni3S2/Fe3O4, with a heterogeneous interfacial structure, modulates the chemisorption of reaction intermediates on the catalyst surface, optimizing the Gibbs free energies (Delta G) of oxygen-containing intermediates. The synergistic effect between the two active materials within the heterogeneous structure enhances OER catalytic performance. This finding offers a valuable approach to designing efficient and stable OER electrocatalysts.
In Situ Electronic Redistribution Tuning of NiCo 2 S 4 Nanosheets for Enhanced Electrocatalysis

Abstract:Metal Ru and vacancy engineering play an important role in oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, there are few reports targeted on electrocatalysts by simultaneously employing these two strategies. Herein, theoretical calculation firstly predicts that Ru and VS can regulate the adsorption energy of OER/HER intermediates for NiCo2S4 electrocatalysts. Then, a facile solvothermal‐photochemical strategy is utilized to synthesis series NiCo2S4 samples: through filling the solvothermal‐created VS in NiCo2S4–x with Ru single atoms (Ru‐NiCo2S4–x) under ultraviolet irradiation as OER catalysts. Besides, Ru nanoclusters are introduced into NiCo2S4 without VS (Ru‐NiCo2S4) for HER. As a result, the OER exchange current density of NiCo2S4–x is prominently boosted after decoration of Ru single atom, which possesses an eminently low overpotential of 190 mV@50 mA cm−2, while Ru‐NiCo2S4 shows superior HER performance (32 mV@10 mA cm−2) compared with Ru‐NiCo2S4–x, surpassing most reported electrocatalytic materials. Moreover, Ru‐NiCo2S4–x//Ru‐NiCo2S4 exhibits remarkable stability and catalytic performance in the overall water splitting, with a cell voltage value of 1.46 V at 10 mA cm−2 in 1.0 m KOH. Bader charge analysis unravels the “restricted‐delocalized‐restricted” phenomenon between electrons promote the electron interactions, which in turn improves electrochemical performance. Theoretical calculation predicts that metal Ru and S‐vacancies can regulate the electronic structure of NiCo2S4 electrocatalysts, and the adsorption energy of reactants. A solvothermal‐photochemical strategy is utilized to synthesis series NiCo2S4 samples. The optimized Ru‐NiCo2S4–x//Ru‐NiCo2S4 exhibits impressive catalytic performance for overall water splitting with a cell voltage value of 1.46 V at 10 mA cm−1 in 1.0 m KOH.

Abstract:Low-cost and highly effective transition metal oxides are being widely researched as one of the most promising electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, traditional transition metal oxides suffer from sluggish reaction kinetics due to their intrinsically poor electronic conductivity. Herein, we demonstrate a facile polydopamine-assisted carburization strategy for the confined synthesis of novel NiOx/Ni ultrathin heterostructured nanosheets. Benefiting from the large exposed surface area and fast charge transfer, the obtained ultrathin NiOx/Ni heterostructured nanosheets exhibit an overpotential of 358 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) and a small Tafel slope of 51 mV dec(-1), outperforming other reported representative nickel oxide based materials and commercial Ir/C catalysts. In addition, a sustainable and efficient overall water-splitting electrolyzer integrated ultrathin NiOx/Ni nanosheets with commercial Pt/C can be effectively and stably driven by solar cells.

Abstract:The synthesis of nanostructured transition metal compounds with adjustable components are often challenging due to the involvement of multiple synthetic procedures or complex manipulations. In this work, a one-step selfregulating acid-etching strategy is employed for nickel iron-layered double hydroxide (NiFe LDH). A twodimensional (2D) NiFe LDH nanosheet is speedy and efficiently formed. This as-prepared NiFe LDH exhibits electrocatalytic activity for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). This approach avoids numerous structural design challenges and provides highly active sites and a robust interface between catalyst and support. As a result, 2D NiFe LDH electrodes demonstrate highly efficient OER performance with a low overpotential of 300 mV and a Tafel slope of 70.6 mV dec- 1 at a current density of 100 mA cm -2.
Three-dimensional VOx/NiS/NF Nanosheets As Efficient Electrocatalyst for Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:Developing effective and robust electrocatalysts that are applicable for intense conditions is promising for variable industrial oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, we have developed a simple hydrothermal strategy to construct a three dimensional nanoflower-like VOx nanosheets (VOx/NiS/NF) that utilizes S-modified NF as substrate. NiS/NF can provide not only high-surface area for the growth of VOx but also better conductivity and stability derived from NiS. XRD shows the formation of amorphous VOx supported on NiS/NF. XPS confirms the existence and valence state of V, Ni and S. EDX and SEM elemental mapping reveal the composition and great distribution of V, O, Ni and S. SEM and TEM show that the thin VOx nanosheets covered on the surface of NiS/NF uniformly, which implying more exposed active sites. OER measurements display that VOx/NiS/NF has the outstanding catalytic activity with the lower overpotential (330 mV, 50 mA cm(-2)), smaller tafel slope (121 mV dec(-1)) and lower value of semicircle of EIS than VOx/NF. The modification of NF may be the key for enhancement performances for OER due to reduced charge transfer resistance. The strong durability of VOx/NiS/NF may be attributed to the tighter integration between VOx and NiS/NF in alkaline electrolytes. The impressive results may provide a new strategy to design suitable substrate with good dispersion and conductivity to prepare effective electrocatalysts for OER.
