Abstract:Purpose: Identify users' needs for pediatric upper extremity (UE) exoskeletons and how users would like exoskeletons to serve their needs. Methods: Qualitative study design with semi-structured interviews performed with families who are English-speaking with a child aged 3 to 16 years with a chronic need for UE assistance to perform activities. Content analysis was conducted for the responses. Results: Twenty-two parents and 12 children among 21 families participated. Families identified key personal care, function and mobility, manual interaction, academic, recreational, and social activities they would like devices to support. Families rated the importance of a variety of design factors. Families using UE wearable assistive devices noted that they better met their functional needs relative to other needs. Families provided design suggestions for future exoskeletons, including preferences for attachment mechanisms, fasteners, and control systems. Conclusions: This study provides important information to guide the prescription and design of UE exoskeletons for pediatric populations.
An Upper-Limb Power-Assist Exoskeleton Using Proportional Myoelectric Control

Abstract:We developed an upper-limb power-assist exoskeleton actuated by pneumatic muscles. The exoskeleton included two metal links: a nylon joint, four size-adjustable carbon fiber bracers, a potentiometer and two pneumatic muscles. The proportional myoelectric control method was proposed to control the exoskeleton according to the user's motion intention in real time. With the feature extraction procedure and the classification (back-propagation neural network), an electromyogram (EMG)-angle model was constructed to be used for pattern recognition. Six healthy subjects performed elbow flexion-extension movements under four experimental conditions: (1) holding a 1-kg load, wearing the exoskeleton, but with no actuation and for different periods (2-s, 4-s and 8-s periods); (2) holding a 1-kg load, without wearing the exoskeleton, for a fixed period; (3) holding a 1-kg load, wearing the exoskeleton, but with no actuation, for a fixed period; (4) holding a 1-kg load, wearing the exoskeleton under proportional myoelectric control, for a fixed period. The EMG signals of the biceps brachii, the brachioradialis, the triceps brachii and the anconeus and the angle of the elbow were collected. The control scheme's reliability and power-assist effectiveness were evaluated in the experiments. The results indicated that the exoskeleton could be controlled by the user's motion intention in real time and that it was useful for augmenting arm performance with neurological signal control, which could be applied to assist in elbow rehabilitation after neurological injury.
Design, Development, and Functional Validation of a 3D-Printed Passive Upper Limb Exoskeleton

Abstract:Motor disability in children is evident in diagnoses such as cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, or spinal muscular atrophy, among others, due to altered movement and postural patterns. This becomes more evident as the child grows and can be treated with physical therapy. The effectiveness of early interventions in facilitating an improvement in daily life activities varies depending on the child's condition. In this context, the use of exoskeletons has emerged in recent years as a valuable resource for conducting more efficient therapy processes. This work describes the design (both structural and functional) and preliminary usability and functional validation of a 3D-printed passive upper limb exoskeleton. The goal is to provide clinicians with an efficient, low-cost device that is both easy to manufacture and assemble and, in a gamified environment, serves as an assistive device to physical therapy. The device features 5 degrees of freedom, enabling both a pro-gravity and an anti-gravity mode, controlled by a series of elastic bands. This gives rise to a dual operating mode, offering assistance or resistance to different arm, forearm, and shoulder-dependent movements. Usability validation conducted by exoskeleton users showed average results in all aspects rated above 3.8 out of 5, which implies levels of satisfaction between "quite satisfied" and "very satisfied". The analysis of metrics recorded during therapy, such as the Hand Path Ratio and Success Rate (capturing user movements using an inertial sensor in the gamified environment), as well as the range of motion, reveals quantifiable improvements which can be attributed to the use of the exoskeleton: the Hand Path Ratio tended to approach 1 throughout sessions in almost all the users, the Success Rate remained stable (as users consistently were capable of completing the assigned tasks), and the range of motion showed that all patients achieved improvements of more than 10 degrees in some of the tested movements). These functional validation processes involved the participation of 7 children with varying levels of upper limb neuro-motor impairments.

Abstract:Abstract Background Children and adolescents with upper limb impairments can experience limited bimanual performance reducing daily-life independence. We have developed a fully wearable pediatric hand exoskeleton (PEXO) to train or compensate for impaired hand function. In this study, we investigated its appropriateness, practicability, and acceptability. Methods Children and adolescents aged 6–18 years with functional limitations in at least one hand due to a neurological cause were selected for this cross-sectional evaluation. We characterized participants by various clinical tests and quantified bimanual performance with the Assisting Hand Assessment (AHA). We identified children whose AHA scaled score increased by ≥ 7 points when using the hand exoskeleton and determined clinical predictors to investigate appropriateness. The time needed to don each component and the number of technical issues were recorded to evaluate practicability. For acceptability, the experiences of the patients and the therapist with PEXO were evaluated. We further noted any adverse events. Results Eleven children (median age 11.4 years) agreed to participate, but data was available for nine participants. The median AHA scaled score was higher with PEXO (68; IQR: 59.5–83) than without (55; IQR: 37.5–80.5; p = 0.035). The Box and Block test, the Selective Control of the Upper Extremity Scale, and finger extensor muscle strength could differentiate well between those participants who improved in AHA scaled scores by ≥ 7 points and those who did not (sensitivity and specificity varied between 0.75 and 1.00). The median times needed to don the back module, the glove, and the hand module were 62, 150, and 160 s, respectively, but all participants needed assistance. The most critical failures were the robustness of the transmission system, the electronics, and the attachment system. Acceptance was generally high, particularly in participants who improved bimanual performance with PEXO. Five participants experienced some pressure points. No adverse events occurred. Conclusions PEXO is a safe exoskeleton that can improve bimanual hand performance in young patients with minimal hand function. PEXO receives high acceptance. We formulated recommendations to improve technical issues and the donning before such exoskeletons can be used under daily-life conditions for therapy or as an assistive device. Abstract:Occupational exoskeletons promise to reduce the incidence of musculoskeletal injuries; however, we do not know if their designs allow universal use by all workers. We also do not know how easy the tasks of assembling, donning, doffing, and disassembling exoskeletons are. The purpose of our study was to heuristically evaluate a back support, a shoulder support, a handgrip strength support, and a sit-stand exoskeleton for how well they are designed for universal use when assembling, donning, doffing, and disassembling the exoskeleton. Seven evaluators used universal design principles and associated criteria to independently evaluate and rate four exoskeletons when assembling, donning, doffing, and disassembling the devices. The rating scale was a Likert-type scale, where a rating of 1 represented not at all, and a rating of 5 represented an excellent design with respect to the universal design criteria for the task. The results indicate that providing perceptible information to the user, making the design equitable to use for a diverse set of users, making the design simple and intuitive to use with adequate feedback, and designing to prevent user errors, and when errors are made, allowing the user to recover quickly from the errors, were rated poorly. Assembling and donning tasks presented the most challenges.

Abstract:Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part H: Journal of Engineering in Medicine, Ahead of Print. In this review, user experience (UX) of recent lower limb exoskeletons (LLEs) and its improvement methodologies are investigated. First, statistics based on standardised and custom UX evaluations are presented. It is indicated that, LLE users have positive UX, especially in the aspects of safety, dimension and effectiveness. Further, overall, UX levels of ankle and hip-knee exoskeletons are higher than those of other exoskeleton types; unilateral LLEs have higher mean UX levels than that of the bilateral ones. Then, design practices for improving UX are studied; the focused points are burden reduction and improvement of device fit. The former is achieved through lightweight design and approaches that reduce device's moment of inertia (MOI) at mechanical joints. Works on the latter refer to the endeavours to enhance static and dynamic fit; they mainly rely on the optimisations of human-robot interface (HRS) and endeavours to rectify misalignment of axes of mechanical and anatomic joints, respectively. The following section is control approaches to enhance wearing comfort level; it is mainly focused on adaptive, interaction and compensation-based controls. Finally, existing problems and future directions are stated and prospected respectively.

A Completely Portable and Concealable, Lightweight Assistive Exosuit for Upper Limbs

Abstract:Exosuits are a relatively new trend in wearable robotics to answer the flaws of their exoskeleton counterparts, but they remain impractical as the lack of rigidity in their frames makes the integration of crucial components into a single unit a challenge. While some simple solutions exist, almost all current research focuses on the output performance of exosuits rather than the needs of potential beneficiaries of this technology. To address this, a novel mechanism of complete portability for exosuits was developed and tested to improve exosuit practicality and adoption. Designed for elbow flexion, the device produced 12.21-13.66Nm of assistive torque and could be mostly concealed by the wearer's clothing without impacting performance. The proof-of-concept design proved successful and demonstrated many advantages over current portability methods, particularly in size and convenience, weighing only 1.7kg. This device provides the sense of normalcy crucial for a technology to seamlessly integrate into the daily lives of its end users. It is extendable and upgradeable with access to advanced materials and manufacturing methods.Clinical Relevance- Exoskeletons are currently the only marketed wearable robotic device for full limb support. This research is the foundation for a new series of exosuits that could drastically enhance the adoptability, accessibility, and versatility of exosuits in physical rehabilitation and general physical enhancement, becoming a superior alternative or addition.
Usability of back support, shoulder support and sit-stand passive occupational exoskeletons: A heuristic evaluation of the designs

Abstract:Occupational exoskeletons promise to alleviate musculoskeletal injuries among industrial workers. Knowledge of the usability of the exoskeleton designs with respect to the user device interaction points, and the problems in design features, functions and parts, evaluated and rated using design principles is still limited. Further, the usability of exoskeletons when assembling, donning, doffing and disassembling them, tasks that can be considered pre and post use tasks are also critical to evaluate, especially from a device design standpoint. We conducted a heuristic evaluation of the usability of three popular exoskeletons, a back support device, a shoulder support device, and a sit stand exoskeleton when assembling, donning, doffing and disassembling them. Seven evaluators used Nielsen and Shneiderman usability heuristics to evaluate the devices. Results indicate that none of the three exoskeletons had any catastrophic usability problems, but all three had major usability problems including accommodating diverse users, the assembly, donning and doffing being a two person operation, poor documentation, a lack of sequence indicators during assembly of the devices, presence of safety hazards while donning and doffing the devices, and manual strength requirements. Further, the assembly task is the most difficult task resulting in the most violations of usability heuristics. The exoskeleton human factors research community should include diverse users in their evaluations and conduct usability, accessibility, and safety evaluations of these devices to provide design feedback to device designers.

Abstract:The potential of wearable robotics technology is undeniable. However, quantifying its value is difficult. Various types of exoskeleton robots have already been developed and tested for upper limb rehabilitation but, evaluations are not standardized, particularly in pediatric rehabilitation. This paper proposes a methodology for the quantitative evaluation of upper limb exoskeletons that, like a test bench, would serve for replicable testing. We determined the range of motion (ROM) and joint torques using both kinematic modeling and experimental measurements (using sensors integrated into Dynamixel actuators). The proposed test bench can provide an accurate range of motion (ROM) and joint torques during the pronation-supination (PS) task. The range of motion obtained with the physical prototype was approximately 156.26 +- 4.71{\deg} during the PS task, while it was approximately 146.84 +- 14.32{\deg} for the multibody model. The results show that the average range of experimental torques (0.28 +- 0.06 N.m) was overestimated by 40% and just 3.4%, respectively, when compared to the average range of simulated torques (0.2 +- 0.05 N.m) and to the highest range of simulated torques (0.29 N.m). For the experimental measurements, test-retest reliability was excellent (0.96-0.98) within sessions and excellent (0.93) or good (0.81-0.86) between sessions. Finally, the suggested approach provides a ROM close to the normal ROM necessary during PS tasks. These results validate the measurements' accuracy and underline the proposed methodology's relevance. The proposed test bench could become a reference standard for evaluating exoskeletons. This study also addresses a methodological aspect on the accurate assessment of joint torques that can serve in applications such as the sizing of actuators in exoskeletons or the non-invasive evaluation of muscle forces in the human body.
User satisfaction with lower limb wearable robotic exoskeletons

Abstract:Objective: To provide the results of a robotic exoskeleton user satisfaction questionnaire completed by participants utilizing two robotic exoskeletons.Method: Seven individuals with physical disabilities engaged in two exoskeleton-assisted training phases with the REX and the Ekso 1.1 (Ekso), after which they completed a user satisfaction questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of structured items with a Likert scale, which were averaged and compared, as well as free response questions, which were interpreted thematically.Results: Participants reported some differences in user satisfaction between the two exoskeletons. They indicated higher satisfaction with transferring in and out of the REX and with its appearance and higher satisfaction with the transportability of the Ekso. Expectations for exoskeleton use were relatively similar for the two devices, with some exceptions. Whereas participants indicated that many changes should be made to both exoskeletons, they reported that some were more necessary for the REX and others were more necessary for the Ekso. Participants reported that they would be somewhat likely to use both exoskeletons at home and in the community if they were available.Conclusions: This brief report provides an initial comparison of user satisfaction with two exoskeletons, thereby contributing to the growing body of literature in this area.Implications for rehabiliationContributes to the literature on user satisfaction with robotic exoskeletons Implications for rehabilitationEmphasizes the role of user/participant/patient feedback in rehabilitation researchProvides user satisfaction questionnaire items that can be used in future studies.
Supporting Surgical Teams: Identifying Needs and Barriers for Exoskeleton Implementation in the Operating Room

Abstract:Objective: The objective of this study was to identify potential needs and barriers related to using exoskeletons to decrease musculoskeletal (MS) symptoms for workers in the operating room (OR). Background: MS symptoms and injuries adversely impact worker health and performance in surgical environments. Half of the surgical team members (e.g., surgeons, nurses, trainees) report MS symptoms during and after surgery. Although the ergonomic risks in surgery are well recognized, little has been done to develop and sustain effective interventions. Method: Surgical team members (n = 14) participated in focus groups, performed a 10-min simulated surgical task with a commercial upper-body exoskeleton, and then completed a usability questionnaire. Content analysis was conducted to determine relevant themes. Results: Four themes were identified: (1) characteristics of individuals, (2) perceived benefits, (3) environmental/societal factors, and (4) intervention characteristics. Participants noted that exoskeletons would benefit workers who stand in prolonged, static postures (e.g., holding instruments for visualization) and indicated that they could foresee a long-term decrease in MS symptoms with the intervention. Specifically, raising awareness of exoskeletons for early-career workers and obtaining buy-in from team members may increase future adoption of this technology. Mean participant responses from the System Usability Scale was 81.3 out of 100 (SD = 8.1), which was in the acceptable range of usability. Conclusion: Adoption factors were identified to implement exoskeletons in the OR, such as the indicated need for exoskeletons and usability. Exoskeletons may be beneficial in the OR, but barriers such as maintenance and safety to adoption will need to be addressed. Application: Findings from this work identify facilitators and barriers for sustained implementation of exoskeletons by surgical teams.
Exoskeletons for Mobility after Spinal Cord Injury: A Personalized Embodied Approach

Abstract:Endowed with inherent flexibility, wearable robotic technologies are powerful devices that are known to extend bodily functionality to assist people with spinal cord injuries (SCIs). However, rather than considering the specific psychological and other physiological needs of their users, these devices are specifically designed to compensate for motor impairment. This could partially explain why they still cannot be adopted as an everyday solution, as only a small number of patients use lower-limb exoskeletons. It remains uncertain how these devices can be appropriately embedded in mental representations of the body. From this perspective, we aimed to highlight the homeostatic role of autonomic and interoceptive signals and their possible integration in a personalized experience of exoskeleton overground walking. To ensure personalized user-centered robotic technologies, optimal robotic devices should be designed and adjusted according to the patient's condition. We discuss how embodied approaches could emerge as a means of overcoming the hesitancy toward wearable robots.

Abstract:For decades, powered exoskeletons have been considered for possible employment in rehabilitation and personal use. Yet, these devices are still far from addressing the needs of users. Here, we introduce TWIN, a novel modular lower limb exoskeleton for personal use of spinal-cord injury (SCI) subjects. This system was designed according to a set of user requirements (lightweight and autonomous portability, quick and autonomous donning and setup, stability when standing/walking, cost effectiveness, long battery life, comfort, safety) which emerged during participatory investigations that organically involved patients, engineers, designers, physiatrists, and physical therapists from two major rehabilitation centers in Italy. As a result of this user-centered process, TWIN's design is based on a variety of small mechatronic modules which are meant to be easily assembled and donned on or off by the user in full autonomy. This paper presents the development of TWIN, an exoskeleton for personal use of SCI users, and the application of user-centered design methods that are typically adopted in medical device industry, for its development. We can state that this approach revealed to be extremely effective and insightful to direct and continuously adapt design goals and activities toward the addressment of user needs, which led to the development of an exoskeleton with modular mechatronics and novel lateral quick release systems. Additionally, this work includes the preliminary assessment of this exoskeleton, which involved healthy volunteers and a complete SCI patient. Tests validated the mechatronics of TWIN and emphasized its high potential in terms of system usability for its intended use. These tests followed procedures defined in existing standards in usability engineering and were part of the formative evaluation of TWIN as a premise to the summative evaluation of its usability as medical device.

Abstract:Abstract . Exoskeleton robots are developing rapidly in the field of industrial manufacturing and medical rehabilitation as an intelligent wearable power assist device, which can reduce the lifting burden and muscle fatigue. Existing upper limb passive exoskeleton robots still need to be improved for human-machine integration. In this paper, by establishing a human kinematic model and a lumbar spine motion model, the lifting assist is analyzed, and the design principle of human-machine integration is used to complete the passive upper limb. In structural design, the exoskeleton robot is divided into 4 structural modules, combined with the specific motion form of the spring energy storage module to complete the cam curve design, and the EMG test system is used to collect the surface EMG of the user without wearing and wearing the exoskeleton robot. According to the signal EMG data, the experiment shows that the amplitude of the muscle EMG signal in the wearing state is smaller than that of the non-wearing muscle EMG signal, and the amplitude of the muscle activation amplitude varies from 0 to 10%, which verifies the effectiveness of the upper limb passive exoskeleton.
User-centered design of a personal-use exoskeleton: a clinical investigation on the feasibility and usability of the ABLE Exoskeleton device for individuals with spinal cord injury to perform skills for home and community environments

Abstract:Introduction: The ABLE Exoskeleton has been tested to be safe and feasible for persons with spinal cord injury (SCI) to complete basic skills in clinical settings but has not been tested for use in home and community environments. A user-centered design process was employed to test the feasibility of the current ABLE Exoskeleton (designed for clinical use) for persons with SCI to perform the basic and advanced skills required for home and community environments, to gain crucial feedback for the development of a novel personal-use exoskeleton. Methods: In this prospective pretest-posttest quasi-experimental study across two SCI centers (Germany, Spain), in-and outpatients with SCI were included into a 22-session training and assessment protocol, utilizing the ABLE Exoskeleton. Feasibility and usability measures [level of assistance (LoA) for basic and advanced skills, donning/doffing-time and LoA] were recorded together with safety outcomes, and participant and therapist satisfaction with the device. Results: 10 participants (44.4 ± 24 years), with SCI from C5 to T11, (American Spinal Injury Association Impairment Scale A–D) completed the study. In 209 sessions, six device-related adverse events (pain and skin lesions) were reported. Average total time for don and doff was 10:23 ± 3:30 min. Eight participants were able to complete don and doff with minimal assistance or less. Independence to carry out all skills in the device increased significantly for all participants ( p < 0.05). Participants with chronic SCI required a significantly ( p < 0.05) lower LoA for six of the nine advanced skills than those in the sub-acute phase. Discussion: This study shows that the ABLE Exoskeleton is safe, feasible and usable for people with SCI in respect to independent donning, doffing and performance of basic and advanced exoskeleton skills. The supervised exoskeleton use in the clinical environment was a highly valuable approach for identifying the challenging tasks and the necessary technological developments that need to be carried out for a personal-use exoskeleton, including a more independent sit-to-stand transition, faster speed of transitions between states and a richer display on the remote control for the user. BLUE SABINO: Development of a BiLateral Upper-Limb Exoskeleton for Simultaneous Assessment of Biomechanical and Neuromuscular Output

Abstract:Arm and hand function play a critical role in the successful completion of everyday tasks. Lost function due to neurological impairment impacts millions of lives worldwide. Despite improvements in the ability to assess and rehabilitate arm deficits, knowledge about underlying sources of impairment and related sequela remains limited. The comprehensive assessment of function requires the measurement of both biomechanics and neuromuscular contributors to performance during the completion of tasks that often use multiple joints and span three-dimensional workspaces. To our knowledge, the complexity of movement and diversity of measures required are beyond the capabilities of existing assessment systems. To bridge current gaps in assessment capability, a new exoskeleton instrument is developed with comprehensive bilateral assessment in mind. The development of the BiLateral Upper-limb Exoskeleton for Simultaneous Assessment of Biomechanical and Neuromuscular Output (BLUE SABINO) expands on prior iterations toward full-arm assessment during reach-and-grasp tasks through the development of a dual-arm and dual-hand system, with 9 active degrees of freedom per arm and 12 degrees of freedom (six active, six passive) per hand. Joints are powered by electric motors driven by a real-time control system with input from force and force/torque sensors located at all attachment points between the user and exoskeleton. Biosignals from electromyography and electroencephalography can be simultaneously measured to provide insight into neurological performance during unimanual or bimanual tasks involving arm reach and grasp. Design trade-offs achieve near-human performance in exoskeleton speed and strength, with positional measurement at the wrist having an error of less than 2 mm and supporting a range of motion approximately equivalent to the 50th-percentile human. The system adjustability in seat height, shoulder width, arm length, and orthosis width accommodate subjects from approximately the 5th-percentile female to the 95th-percentile male. Integration between precision actuation, human–robot-interaction force-torque sensing, and biosignal acquisition systems successfully provide the simultaneous measurement of human movement and neurological function. The bilateral design enables use with left- or right-side impairments as well as intra-subject performance comparisons. With the resulting instrument, the authors plan to investigate underlying neural and physiological correlates of arm function, impairment, learning, and recovery.

Abstract:For more than a decade, many countries have been actively developing robotic assistive devices to assist in the rehabilitation of individuals with limb disability to regain function in the extremities. The exoskeleton assistive device in this study has been designed primarily for hemiplegic stroke patients to aid in the extension of fingers to open up the palm to simulate the effects of rehabilitation. This exoskeleton was designed as an anterior-support type to achieve palmar extension and acts as a robotic assistive device for rehabilitation in bilateral upper limb task training. Testing results show that this wearable exoskeleton assistive device with human factor consideration using percentile dimensions can provide comfortable wear on patients as well as adequate torque to pull individual fingers into flexion towards the palm for rehabilitation. We hope this exoskeleton device can help stroke patients with loss of function in the upper extremities to resume motor activities in order to maintain activities of daily living.

Abstract:Wearable passive upper-limb exoskeletons have been proposed and commercialized as tools to improve the ergonomics of workers in repetitive or physically demanding tasks. In the study presented here, an innovative upper-limb exoskeleton is presented, along with experimental tests with human subjects. The device, called proto-MATE, is characterized by two distinguishing design features: a highly ergonomic human-robot kinematics architecture and bioinspired assistance, created to partially compensate for the user's arm weight. Experimental tests investigated the device's effects on the physical strain of eight upper-limb muscles. These tests also quantified the kinematic coupling between the device and the user by means of specific kinematics-related parameters. The protocol included overhead tasks that are representative of the target application and tasks that generalize nontargeted upperlimb movements and may occur in real working conditions.

Abstract:Abstract This paper introduces a novel upper limb robotic exoskeleton designed to assist industrial operators in a wide range of manual repetitive tasks, such as tool handling and lifting/moving of heavy items. Due to its reduced size and high maneuverability, the proposed portable device may also be employed for rehabilitation purposes (e.g. as an aid for people with permanent neuromuscular diseases or post-stroke patients). Its primary function is to compensate the gravity loads acting on the human shoulder by means of a hybrid system consisting of four electric motors and three passive springs. The paper focuses on the exoskeleton mechanical design and virtual prototyping. After a preliminary review of the existent architectures and procedures aimed at defining the exoskeleton functional requirements, a detailed behavioral analysis is conducted using analytical and numerical approaches. The developed interactive model allows to simulate both kinematics and statics of the exoskeleton for every possible movement within the design workspace. To validate the model, the results have been compared with the ones achieved with a commercial multibody software for three different operator’s movements.

Abstract:Most current hand exoskeletons have been designed specifically for rehabilitation, assistive or haptic applications to simplify the design requirements. Clinical studies on post-stroke rehabilitation have shown that adapting assistive or haptic applications into physical therapy sessions significantly improves the motor learning and treatment process. The recent technology can lead to the creation of generic hand exoskeletons that are application-agnostic. In this paper, our motivation is to create guidelines and best practices for generic exoskeletons by reviewing the literature of current devices. First, we describe each application and briefly explain their design requirements, and then list the design selections to achieve these requirements. Then, we detail each selection by investigating the existing exoskeletons based on their design choices, and by highlighting their impact on application types. With the motivation of creating efficient generic exoskeletons in the future, we finally summarize the best practices in the literature.
