Abstract:Let $$0<\varrho <1$$ and $$T_{a}$$ be a bilinear pseudo-differential operator defined by the symbol $$a\in BS^{-n(1-\varrho )}_{\varrho ,\varrho }$$ . It is shown that the operator $$T_{a}$$ obeys the following pointwise estimate $$\begin{aligned} M^{\sharp }(T_{a}(f,g))(x)\le C M_{p}f(x)M_{q}g(x) \end{aligned}$$ for all $$x\in \mathbb {R}^{n}$$ if $$2< p,q<\infty $$ and $$\frac{1}{p}+\frac{1}{q}=\frac{1}{2}$$ . Here $$M^{\sharp }$$ denotes the Fefferman–Stein sharp operator and $$M_{p}$$ stands for the generalized Hardy–Littlewood maximal operator.
MAXIMAL L AND POINTWISE HÖLDER ESTIMATES FOR b ON CR MANIFOLDS OF CLASS C

Abstract:A CR manifold, as first formulated in Kohn-Rossi [KR], is a smooth 2n + 1-dimensional real manifold equipped with an integrable CR structure. It was due to Kohn [K2] who first showed that the so-called Kohn’s Laplacian b on (p, q)-forms satisfies subelliptic estimates on any CR manifold whose Levi form satisfies condition Y (q). The results of Hölder and L estimates for b and the Szegö projection for any smooth CR structures satisfying condition Y (q) have long been established (see [K2, FK, FS, RS, BS, BG, KS]). In this paper we derive maximal L estimates and pointwise Hölder and L estimates in the sense of Campanato for harmonic integrals for strongly pseudoconvex CR manifolds or CR manifolds satisfying condition Y (q) (see Folland-Kohn [FK] or Definition 1.2) of class C. Our approach is a much more direct method and it also yields new estimates for b and the Szegö projection. There are many applications of the estimates for b with minimal smoothness assumption. For CR manifolds with smooth structures, Boutet de Monvel [Bou] proved that any compact C∞ smooth strongly pseudoconvex CR manifold of real dimension five is embeddable in C for some large N . Our results will immediately relax the conditions on the smoothness of CR manifolds which will be useful in the construction of bounded holomorphic functions on Kähler manifolds with negative curvature (see [Bla]). Maximal estimates under minimal smoothness assumption are also useful in the local embedding problem of CR structures (see Chapter 12 in [CS]) and the references therein). Estimates for b with minimal smoothness are also important for studying nonlinear subelliptic operators. But these topics will be discussed elsewhere. In the case of the de Rham complex, the maximal estimates of harmonic integrals for Riemannian manifolds with minimal smoothness assumption have long been obtained from the classical elliptic theory for partial differential equations (see e.g. [Mor]). Previously even the L maximal estimates for b can only be obtained by the lifting methods used in [RS]. The maximal L estimates can now be obtained directly due to new observation which greatly simplifies earlier approach and yields pointwise Hölder estimates. In Section 1, we give precise definition of CR manifolds of class C, k ≥ 2. For CR manifolds of class C, a complete L theory of b is proved in Section 2. We first derive maximal estimates in L theory for b on CR manifolds satisfying condition Y (q). Using only commutators of vector fields, we derive the maximal estimates from the basic subelliptic estimates without pseudodifferential operators. This is achieved based on the simple observation that the vector fields between a “good” and the “bad” directions almost commute. In fact, they commute completely on the model quadric domains. Thus it is actually easier to estimate the bad direction first, contrary to the conventional wisdom. We use interpolation to prove estimates in good directions (see Proposition 2.2). This makes it possible to obtain maximal L estimates using commutators of vector fields only and under minimal smoothness assumption. Even for smooth CR structures, our method is new. In earlier approaches (see [KN] or [RS]), one always estimates the good directions first and then uses pseudodifferential operators to yield estimates for the bad directions. Due to the transparent nature of our proof, we can keep track of the precise smoothness required in each step.
Global regularity for the $\bar\partial$-Neumann problem on pseudoconvex manifolds

Abstract:We establish general sufficient conditions for exact (and global) regularity in the $\bar\partial$-Neumann problem on $(p,q)$-forms, $0 \leq p \leq n$ and $1\leq q \leq n$, on a pseudoconvex domain $\Omega$ with smooth boundary $b\Omega$ in an $n$-dimensional complex manifold $M$. Our hypotheses include two assumptions: 1) $M$ admits a function that is strictly plurisubharmonic acting on $(p_0,q_0)$-forms in a neighborhood of $b\Omega$ for some fixed $0 \leq p_0 \leq n$, $1 \leq q_0 \leq n$, or $M$ is a Kähler metric whose holomorphic bisectional curvature acting $(p,q)$-forms is positive; and 2) there exists a family of vector fields $T_\epsilon$ that are transverse to the boundary $b\Omega$ and generate one forms, which when applied to $(p,q)$-forms, $0 \leq p \leq n$ and $q_0 \leq q \leq n$, satisfy a "weak form" of the compactness estimate. We also provide examples and applications of our main theorems.

Abstract:We prove several inequalities related to the $\bar\partial$-operator on bounded domains in $\mathbb{C}^n$, which can be viewed as a $\bar\partial$-version of the classical Poincaré inequality and its various generalizations, and apply them to derive a generalization of Sobolev Inequality with Trace in $\mathbb{R}^n$. As applications to complex analysis, we get an integral form of Maximum Modulus Principle for holomorphic functions, and an improvement of Hörmander's $L^2$-estimate for $\bar\partial$ on bounded strictly pseudoconvex domains.

Abstract:We prove a homotopy formula which yields almost optimal estimates in all (positive-indexed) Sobolev and Hölder-Zygmund spaces for the $\overline \partial$ equation on finite type domains in $\mathbb C^2$, extending the earlier results of Fefferman-Kohn (1988) and Chang-Nagel-Stein (1992), and Range (1992). The main novelty of our proof is the construction of holomorphic support functions that admit precise estimates when the parameter variable lies in a thin shell outside the domain, which generalizes Range's method.

Tower multitype and global regularity of the $\bar\partial$-Neumann operator

Abstract:A new approach is given to property $(P_q)$ defined by Catlin for $q=1$ in a global and by Sibony in a local context, subsequently extended by Fu-Straube for $q>1$. This property is known to imply compactness and global regularity in the $\bar\partial$-Neumann problem by a result of Kohn-Nirenberg, as well as condition $R$ by a result of Bell-Ligocka. In particular, we provide a self-contained proof of property $(P_q)$ for pseudoconvex hypersurfaces of finite D'Angelo $q$-type, the case originally studied by Catlin. Moreover, our proof covers more general classes of hypersurfaces inspired by a recent work of Huang-Yin. Proofs are broken down into isolated steps, some of which do not require pseudoconvexity.

Abstract:The critical CR GJMS operator on a strictly pseudoconvex CR manifold is a non-hypoelliptic CR invariant differential operator. We prove that, under the embeddability assumption, it is essentially self-adjoint and has closed range. Moreover, its spectrum is discrete, and the eigenspace corresponding to each non-zero eigenvalue is a finite-dimensional subspace of the space of smooth functions. As an application, we obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a contact form with zero CR $Q$-curvature.

Abstract:In this note, we provide an elementary proof for the expression of $f(U)-f(V)$ in the form of a double operator integral for every Lipschitz function $f$ on the unit circle $\cir$ and for a pair of unitary operators $(U,V)$ with $U-V\in\mathcal{S}_{2}(\hilh)$ (the Hilbert-Schmidt class). As a consequence, we obtain the Schatten $2$-Lipschitz estimate $\|f(U)-f(V)\|_2\leq \|f\|_{\lip(\cir)}\|U-V\|_2$ for all Lipschitz functions $f:\cir\to\C$. Moreover, we develop an approach to the operator Lipschitz estimate for a pair of contractions with the assumption that one of them is a strict contraction, which significantly extends the class of functions from results known earlier. More specifically, for each $p\in(1,\infty)$ and for every pair of contractions $(T_0,T_1)$ with $\|T_0\|<1$, there exists a constant $d_{f, p,T_0}>0$ such that $\|f(T_1)-f(T_0)\|_p\leq d_{f,p, T_0}\|T_1-T_0\|_p$ for all Lipschitz functions on $\cir$. Using our Lipschitz estimates, we establish a modified Krein trace formula applicable to a specific category of pairs of contractions featuring Hilbert-Schmidt perturbations.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a compact connected CR manifold with a transversal CR $S^1$-action of real dimension $2n-1$, which is only assumed to be weakly pseudoconvex. Let $\Box_b$ be the $\overline{\partial}_b$-Laplacian, with respect to a $T$-rigid Hermitian metric (see Definition 3.2 of $T$-rigid Hermitian metric). Eigenvalue estimate of $\Box_b$ is a fundamental issue both in CR geometry and analysis. In this paper, we are able to obtain a sharp estimate of the number of eigenvalues smaller than or equal to $\lambda$ of $\Box_b$ acting on the $m$-th Fourier components of smooth $(n-1,q)$-forms on $X$, where $m\in \mathbb{Z}_+$ and $q=0,1,\cdots, n-1$. Here the sharp means the growth order with respect to $m$ is sharp. In particular, when $\lambda=0$, we obtain the asymptotic estimate of the growth for $m$-th Fourier components $H^{n-1,q}_{b,m}(X)$ of $H^{n-1,q}_b(X)$ as $m \rightarrow +\infty$. Furthermore, we establish a Serre type duality theorem for Fourier components of Kohn-Rossi cohomology which is of independent interest. As a byproduct, the asymptotic growth of the dimensions of the Fourier components $H^{0,q}_{b,-m}(X)$ for $ m\in \mathbb{Z}_+$ is established. We also give appilcations of our main results, including Morse type inequalities, asymptotic Riemann-Roch type theorem, Grauert-Riemenscheider type criterion, and an orbifold version of our main results which provides an answer towards a folklore open problem informed to us by Hsiao.

Abstract:Consider a complete asymptotically flat 3-manifold $M$ with non-negative scalar curvature and non-empty minimal boundary $\Sigma$. Fix a number $1 < p < 3$. We derive monotone quantities for $p$-harmonic functions on $M$ which become constant on Schwarzschild. These monotonicity formulas imply a sharp mass-capacity estimate relating the ADM mass of $M$ with the $p$-capacity of $\Sigma$ in $M$, which was first proved by Xiao using weak inverse mean curvature flow.

Abstract:For a proper function $f$ on the plane, we study the operator \[ Tf(x,y) = \lim_{\varepsilon\to 0} \int_\varepsilon^1 f(x-t,y-t^k) \frac{e^{2\pi i \gamma(t)}}{\psi(t)} dt, \] where $k\ge1$ and $\psi$ and $\gamma$ are functions defined near the origin such that $\psi(t)\to 0$ and $|\gamma(t)|\to\infty$ as $t\to 0$. We give sufficient regularity and growth conditions on $\psi$ and $\gamma$ for its multiplier to be a bounded function, and thus for the operator to be bounded on $L^2(\mathbb R^2)$. We consider an extension to $L^p(\mathbb R^2)$, for certain $p's$.

Abstract:We derive integral representations for $(0,q)$-forms, $q\ge1$, on non-smooth strictly pseudoconvex domains, the Henkin-Leiterer domains. A $(0,q)$-form, $f$ is written in terms of integral operators acting on $f$, $\mdbar f$, and $\mdbar^{\ast} f$. The representation is applied to derive $L^{\infty}$ estimates.

Abstract:In this paper we consider a singular integral operator and a parametric Marcinkiewicz integral operator with rough kernel. These operators have singularity along sets of the form curves $\{x=P(\varphi (|y|))y'\}$, where P is a real polynomial satisfying $P(0)=0$ and φ satisfies certain smooth conditions. Under the conditions that $\varOmega \in H^{1} (\mathbf{S}^{n-1})$ and $h\in \Delta _{\gamma }(\mathbf{R}_{+})$ for some $\gamma >1$, we prove that the above operators are bounded on the Lebesgue space $L^{2}( \mathbf{R}^{n})$. Moreover, the $L^{2}$-bounds of the maximal functions related to the above integrals are also established. Particularly, the bounds are independent of the coefficients of the polynomial P. In addition, we also present certain Hardy type inequalities related to these operators.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a compact strictly pseudoconvex embeddable Cauchy-Riemann manifold and let $T_P$ be the Toeplitz operator on $X$ associated with a first-order pseudodifferential operator $P$. In our previous work we established the asymptotic expansion for $k$ large of the kernel of the operators $\chi(k^{-1}T_P)$, where $\chi$ is a smooth cut-off function supported in the positive real line. By using these asymptotics, we show in this paper that $X$ can be projectively embedded by maps with components of the form $\chi(k^{-1}\lambda)f_\lambda$, where $\lambda$ is an eigenvalue of $T_P$ and $f_\lambda$ is a corresponding eigenfunction. We establish the asymptotics of the pull-back of the Fubini-Study metric by these maps and we obtain the distribution of the zero divisors of random Cauchy-Riemann functions. We then establish a version of the Lelong-Poincaré formula for domains with boundary and obtain the distribution of the zero divisors of random holomorphic functions on strictly pseudoconvex domains.

Sharp spectral gap estimates for higher-order operators on Cartan-Hadamard manifolds

Abstract:The goal of this paper is to provide sharp spectral gap estimates for problems involving higher-order operators (including both the clamped and buckling plate problems) on Cartan-Hadamard manifolds. The proofs are symmetrization-free -- thus no sharp isoperimetric inequality is needed -- based on two general, yet elementary functional inequalities. The spectral gap estimate for clamped plates solves a sharp asymptotic problem from Cheng and Yang [Proc. Amer. Math. Soc., 2011] concerning the behavior of higher-order eigenvalues on hyperbolic spaces, and answers a question raised in Kristály [Adv. Math., 2020] on the validity of such sharp estimates in high-dimensional Cartan-Hadamard manifolds. As a byproduct of the general functional inequalities, various Rellich inequalities are established in the same geometric setting.

Abstract:We introduce a notion of locally approximable continuous CR functions on locally closed subsets of reduced complex spaces, generalizing both holomorphic functions and CR functions on CR submanifolds. Under additional assumptions of set-theoretical weak pseudoconcavity we prove optimal maximum modulus principles for these functions. Restricting to real submanifolds (possibly with CR singularities) of complexmanifolds, we generalize results on holomorphic extension known for CR submanifolds.

Abstract:We prove fine higher regularity results of Calderón-Zygmund-type for equations involving nonlocal operators modelled on the fractional $p$-Laplacian with possibly discontinuous coefficients of VMO-type. We accomplish this by establishing precise pointwise bounds in terms of certain fractional sharp maximal functions. This approach is new already in the linear setting and enables us to deduce sharp regularity results also in borderline cases.
