Abstract:Abstract The personal library of Jacques Derrida, acquired by Princeton University in 2015, includes a richly annotated copy of George Eliot’s The Lifted Veil. Derrida’s marginal markings reveal preoccupations shared between Eliot’s narrator, Latimer, and the persona of his 2001 book Veils, specifically the allure of the unknown, the city of Prague as a volatile setting, certain versions of the veil they hold in common (in particular veil as shroud), and the inclination they share toward deconstructing binary oppositions (in particular life and death). Such connections justify the continued interest in Eliot by deconstructionists in this century, as well as K. M. Newton’s description of George Eliot as “proto-Derridean.”

Abstract:Feminist scholars or artists see the world through the gender lens, which mastered the act of looking at men’s pervasive presence. I encountered its limits while gazing at a figure in the 19th century Burmese parabaik or folded paintings. In these paintings, which depict royal court performances, a figure emerges–a full-bodied man without a face. The painter granted him a faceless face and a gaze to follow. I embarked on a conversation with this faceless man by using the haptic eyes or that which faces the fleshly force of the painting. Who is this faceless man? Most importantly, why do my gendered eyes conclude that this figure is a man?

Abstract:While the Künstlerroman may well be considered one of the genres that have blossomed most prominently in the 20th century English-Canadian literature, research investigating its poetics has remained on the fringes of literary scholarship. This paper examines L.M. Montgomery’s sophisticated use of the Künstlerinroman through her portraits of female writers in the Emily and Anne series. My goal is to explore how Montgomery’s heroines choose to narrate themselves and the world around them, how they transcend difficulties and assert their own unique perspectives. Therefore, this paper examines not only the socio-cultural environment which served as background for the creation of literature, but also the writer’s reflections regarding the process of bringing said literature into the world. Drawing on the scholarship of J. Buckley, R. Seret, E. Varsamopoulou, F. Hammill, K. Macfarlane, G.A. Guth and others, this paper aims to analyze L.M. Montgomery’s “sophisticated handling of genre” (E.R. Epperly) in greater depth and place her portraits of the female artists within a broader cultural and literary context. The question of female subjectivity, which concerns women’s perceptions of their own writing (and their fate as artists), is central to my research.

Abstract:The particular structure and organization of Jane Eyre surely constitute only some of the traits that favor survival of this great classic for all these centuries. They represent the hallmark of Jane Eyre, through which Charlotte Brontë has spoken to a large number of readers, using different cultural, geographical and historical interrelations in unexpected ways and forms, but always suggestive and successful. This paper aims at highlighting some of the different occultation strategies brought into play by the two emblematic, magnetic and fascinating protagonists, who sit at the loving table in Jane Eyre. The ability to conceal and unveil, to allow the feeling of love to be subtended and misunderstood is certainly one of the building blocks of the soul of a classic like Jane Eyre. It offers the possibility of maturing an interior path of redemption, of knowledge and affirmation of the self, within a delicate system, in balance between drives and reason. The continuous game of parts, between presence and absence, between what is shown and what one actually is, remains mysterious, elusive, and in perpetual becoming. Hiding love thus represents a gateway to the complexity of reality and at the same time allows us to experience other fascinations and sensations that would otherwise remain only, totally ‘ideal’.

Abstract:Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein explores on the complexities of body politics and societal norms through the narrative of Victor Frankenstein and his creation, the monster. This research paper analyzes the novel through the lens of rejection, Otherness and the societal constructs of beauty and acceptance. The research investigates on the intricate intersections of various discourses in shaping the notion of “black body” throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Furthermore, it highlights on how Shelley’s portrayal of the hideous and marginalized body of the monster in her text aligns with the ideological constructions of black bodies. The monster, with his physical deformities and alien appearance, serves as a powerful symbol of the Other, highlighting society’s tendency to fear and ostracize those who are different. Drawing on Julia Kristeva’s concept of “the abject,” Michel Foucault’s notion of “biopower,” and Freud’s idea of “uncanny,” this paper searches how Shelly’s text reflects broader cultural anxieties and critiques societal norms. Through a detailed analysis of textual evidences, including direct quotes from the novel, this paper examines the implications of the monster’s rejection to socio-cultural norms and the societal forces that shape his identity. The paper concludes that exclusion of Frankenstein’s creation from the society directly stems from the societal constructs and responses towards bodies. Perception of bodies reflects more about the culture observing them than bodies themselves. In its essence, Frankenstein stands as a poignant narrative about the dangers of marginalization and the importance of empathy and acceptance in a diverse society. This paper underscores the critical need to understand how societal constructs shape perceptions of marginalized bodies, paving the way for future research to explore these dynamics in contemporary contexts and to develop strategies for fostering greater inclusion and acceptance.

Abstract:In this essay, Randall Wilhelm places Faulkner’s use of the silhouette in dialogue with contemporary visual artist Kara Walker, whose silhouette assemblages interrogate power and sexual relations in the plantocracy of the American south. Looking at Faulkner’s conceptual links between blackness and sexuality in his own visual silhouettes in the hand-lettered and illustrated dream play, The Marionettes , the essay moves to a comparison of similar constructs in Walker’s installation, The End of Uncle Tom and the Grand Allegorical Tradition . Considering the historical, aesthetic, and cultural contexts of the silhouette, a form that renders all sitters pitch black despite racial difference, the essay shows Walker’s deconstruction of historical narratives and racial mythologies through strategies of melodrama, turbulence, and titillation. In the concluding section, readers are asked to reimagine scenes from The Unvanquished as Walker silhouette assemblages, focusing on the scene of Bayard and Ringo hiding from Union soldiers under Granny Millard’s skirt in “Ambuscade.”

Abstract:Abstract This essay explores an alternative figuration in Dryden’s thought and writing on the sister arts: face-painting and translation. In this parallel, Dryden conceives of the face as the original text, the face-paint as the translated word, the cosmetician as the translator, and vice versa. To explore the interrelationship of these arts is to reveal the contradictory impulses that shape Dryden’s 1697 Aeneis, reconciling opposing critical views of his translation strategies. In this essay, I survey the prevalent satiric and aesthetic functions of face-painting in Dryden’s writings. I show that in his essays of the 1690s, Dryden’s ambivalent views on cosmetics inform his views on translation: both the original text and the unpainted face are sacred designs that, paradoxically, may still be beautified by the translator’s expression or the cosmetician’s paint. In translation, Dryden is thus caught between the desire to foreground his own paint and the obligation to preserve Virgil’s design. By way of conclusion, I offer a reading of Dryden’s three renderings of the Aeneas and Lausus episode (Aeneid X), in which he liberally daubs and delicately paints upon Virgil’s original. These diverse strategies are poetic manifestations of the conflicting energies that define Dryden’s sister arts, face-painting and translation.

Abstract:This essay locates avenues in Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre and Villette for discussing the parameters of women writers' internalized patriarchy in Victorian Britain. The first segment treats the importance of the protagonists' reliance upon different mise-en-abyme books, which act as mirrors that reflect and foreshadow the forlornness of Victorian women in Charlotte Brontë's two novels. In the second segment, we discuss how Jane and Lucy acknowledge and become the delegates of Thanatos, the androcentric privilege, at the end of their narratives. Psychoanalytic concepts such as the mirror metaphor and the discussion of Eros and Thanatos are used as means to appreciate the detour of desire (which constitutes literary narrative) in the inevitable tour of death.

Abstract:This research explores the gaze of the liturgical dancer, constituting a study of the “female gaze” of the performer rather than the “male gaze” of imagined spectators.* I anchor fieldwork at a Presbyterian church and a survey of liturgical dance manuals to a review of contemporary literature on the theology of the body with a particular emphasis on feminist theology. Noting the contested role of the female body in Christian worship, I explore the gaze of the performer from the perspective of dance theory and sacred art aesthetic theory. I argue that the liturgical dancer's gaze functions as a symbol of her intent and as a powerful tool for transforming performance into worship. Hence, it is a means of establishing community within a congregation and unity with God. Abstract:Contemporary feminist scholarship has read theVindication of the Rights of Womanas a paradigm of the anti-eroticism present in all of Wollstonecraft's works, but which is less discernible in her private life and letters. As a result, it is not unusual to find the letters and the life being cited as contradictory departures from the sexual ideology of theVindication. Against received feminist critical opinion, this essay argues that secrecy rather than pleasure in sexual relations that is the target of the text's negative polemic. In other words, I propose that the focus of aVindication'santi-eroticism is the art of secrecy which fashionable male conduct-book writers encouraged women to practise. In the context of theVindication'soutrage over the cultural injunction to women to cloak sexual emotion in enigmatic self-reserve, the frankness with which Wollstonecraft later declares her passion in the Letters to Imlay appears less of a contradiction than a consolidation of her theoretical position. The concluding section of the paper re-examines Wollstonecraft's ideal of mutual love based on honesty in the light of the failed relationship with Imlay. By looking at similar disappointments suffered by contemporary fictional heroines, I close with the suggestion that the texts of Enlightenment feminism paradoxically reveal secrecy to be a constituent component of heterosexual desire.

Abstract:William Somerset Maugham is a famous British novelist and playwright, known for his expertise in portraying characters and depicting the complexity of human nature. The novel The Painted Veil, one of Maugham's representative works, focuses on the experience of the heroine Kitty and her changes of state of mind. It explores the process of female spiritual awakening from ignorance to independence, with distinct feminist features. At the time of the novel's creation, the Western women's liberation movement was in full swing. The wave of liberating women and the pursuit of equality swept the entire Western world, leaving footprints in Maugham's literary works. This paper analyzes The Painted Veil through Beauvoir's female theory and a feminist perspective, finding that it breaks the bondage and prejudice of the traditional female image at that time, creating a new image and value pursuit for women. It also reflects Maugham's rejection of the portrayal of females as "the other," criticizes patriarchal society to some extent, and affirms feminist theory.

Abstract:Social theory draws energy not just from the concepts it articulates but also from the images it invokes. This article explores the image of the veil in social theory. Unlike the mask, which suggests a binary account of human conduct (what is covered can be uncovered), the veil summons a wide range of human experiences. Of special importance is the veil's association with religion. In radical social thought, some writers ironize this association by "unveiling" religion as fraudulent (a move indistinguishable from unmasking it.) Baron d'Holbach and Marx offer classic examples of this stratagem. But other writers, notably Du Bois and Fanon, take a more nuanced and more theoretically productive approach to both religion and the veil. Refusing to debunk religion, these authors treat the veil—symbol and material culture—as a resource to theorize about social conflict. Proceeding in three stages, I, first, contrast the meanings of mask and unmasking with more supple veil imagery; second, identify anti-religious unveiling that is tantamount to unmasking; and, third, examine social theories of the veil that clarify the stakes of social adversity and political struggle. Du Bois's and Fanon's contributions to veil imagery receive special attention.

Abstract:This article presents my on-going practice in which I explore and reveal perceived memory and experience that is imbued in worn clothing, specifically through my recent work Łódź Blouse Trilogy. In this work, I undertook a series of interventions on blouses in order to reveal dormant and latent matter—details from a single photographic image of a tea party in Poland’s Łódź ghetto. Łódź Blouse Trilogy and related work addresses the use of textiles, cloth, and clothing as a rich landscape to explore and communicate complex ideas within a fine art context. I also seek to present knowledge and provoke thinking on a series of levels, from craft skills to contemporary scientific and psychological thinking. We are intimately familiar with the physicality and materiality of clothing. Thus, this work offers a “safe” fluid entry point to discuss and stimulate thinking around inherited memory, biological and metaphorical transference, personal recall and repression, our sense of self and the ability of cloth and clothes to hold and translate human experience. Fascinated with the creative implications of what is left behind in the clothes we wear, and supported by my experience of working with Alison Fendly at the Forensic Science Service, I have sought to make visible a personal response. The use of garment construction/deconstruction, digital embroidery and dye-sublimation printing have made this work manifest.
Reexamination of Orientalism by the Protagonist’s Psychological Interiority in Concert with Setting Description in The Painted Veil

Abstract:In The Painted Veil, the setting descriptions serve as an apparatus to reveal the protagonist Kitty’s mental or emotional status for that her psychological interiority is projected onto these external objects, which T.S. Eliot named Objective Correlative. Through this angle, this paper reexamines certain Orientalism related topics and previous critiques. This paper analyzes how Kitty’s psychological world and setting descriptions coordinate to indicate Kitty’s transformation. The transitional process of Kitty’s attitudes towards China and Chinese and the development of Kitty’s perception of life are explored. Intriguingly, this paper tempts to prove that some critiques against Maugham and the novel may be prejudice-oriented or evidence insufficient.

Abstract:Renowned for her self-portraiture that acts as her visual autobiography, Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) is one of the leading woman painters of all time and an enduring feminist icon. Aside from the personal and societal commentary, both subtle and overt, that is evident within her artwork, the use of medical imagery shifts the viewer's perspective beyond Kahlo's self-portraits to offer accurate interpretations of her own singular history. The incorporation of dermatologic iconography within Kahlo's self-portraiture to record her skin, as well as its unique features, have rebuked conventional standards of beauty and exploded preconceptions of what is permissible in high art.

Abstract:“The Lady of Shalott” is a lyrical ballad written by the English Victorian poet Alfred Tennyson. There have been a wide variety of interpretations of this poem. It has also been a source of inspiration for various artistic expressions, such as art, literature, and music. The purpose of this paper is to examine the process of reverse ekphrasis in two paintings produced by the painter John William Waterhouse: The Lady of Shalott and I Am Half-Sick of Shadows, Said the Lady of Shalott. On the other hand, Nicole (Nick) Loven’s film adaptation of the poem incorporates a circular intertextuality process that revolves around the interaction between images and words. Thus, the narrated text becomes a visual image. The conversion stage of the process of reverse ekphrasis, in which Tennyson’s source text is transformed into Waterhouse’s target text, depends on a specific moment depicted in the poem “The Lady of Shalott,” as conveyed through the lady’s words. Waterhouse’s intertextual dialogue with Tennyson’s poem involves a process of reverse ekphrasis. This interaction between image and word is later transformed into another visual representation. The word transformed into an image is then converted back into an image using a film version.

Abstract:The white gaze is one of the survival dilemmas that African Americans have consistently faced. The Bluest Eye, Toni Morrison’s first novel, focuses on the eye as its central motif to probe into the physical and mental harm that black people, especially children, suffer due to the oppressive social discipline of white culture. However, her exploration grows even more complex in her analysis of the sense of rebellion exhibited by some of her characters against the violent racialized gaze and the distortions left by the beauty standard of western culture upon the perceptions of individual spectators in her novel. This thesis endeavors to analyze the three layers of meaning concentrated in the symbol of the eye in The Bluest Eye by restoring Laura Mulvey’s theory of the male gaze, as well as the concept of the white gaze, and thereby demonstrating Morrison’s profound care for all of her black fellows. The eye is to disempower, resist, and totalize the hegemonic standard of beauty. This paper intends to reflect upon the place of gaze in the interaction between the individual and the prevalent symbolic system used within a society.
