Abstract:Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) was a Mexican artist who is remembered for her self-portraits, pain and passion, and bold, vibrant colors. This work aims to use her life story and her artistic production in a longitudinal study to examine with quantitative tools the effects of physical and emotional pain (rage) on artistic expression. Kahlo suffered from polio as a child, was involved in a bus accident as a teenager where she suffered multiple fractures of her spine and had 30 operations throughout her lifetime. She also had a tempestuous relationship with her painter husband, Diego Rivera. Her physical and personal troubles however became the texture of her vivid visual vocabulary-usually expressed through the depiction of Mexican and indigenous culture or the female experience and form. We applied color analysis to a series of Frida's self-portraits and revealed a very strong association of physical pain and emotional rage with low wavelength colors (red and yellow), indicating that the expression of her ailments was, consciously or not, achieved by increasing the perceived luminance of the canvas. Further quantitative analysis that used the fractal dimension identified "The broken column" as the portrait with higher compositional complexity, which matches previous critical acclaim of this portrait as the climax of her art. These results confirm the ability of color analysis to extract emotional and cognitive features from artistic work. We suggest that these tools could be used as markers to support artistic and creative interventions in mental health.
Evaluation of the impact of birth preparation courses on the health of the mother and the newborn.

Abstract:This study was carried out to evaluate the impact of birth preparation courses on the health of the mother and the newborn. A randomized clinical trial study was carried out on 200 primigravid women younger than age 35 years with gestational age of 20 weeks. Subjects were randomly divided into two groups: control and trial. Birth preparation classes were introduced to the trial group in eight sessions during pregnancy, whereas the control group received only routine care. Measurable clinical, obstetrical, and neonatal advantages were monitored and compared in two groups. Patients in the trial group suffered from back and pelvic pain and headache significantly less often than patients in control group (two-tailed p(2) < 0.05). Preparation is significantly related to reduction in dystocic deliveries and cesarean section ( p(2) = 0.044). Antenatal preparation could play a major role in the health of mother and newborn during labor and postpartum. In addition, antenatal preparation should be introduced to all women during pregnancy as a national health policy in Iran.

Abstract:Cosmetic surgery stands, for many theorists and social critics, as the ultimate symbol of invasion of the human body for the sake of physical beauty. Interpreted as somehow qualitatively different from other efforts at altering the body, plastic surgery is considered to be so extreme, so dangerous, that it leaves no space for interpretation as anything but subjugation. While such criticisms are compelling, they tend to operate at either the grand level of cultural discourse or the highly grounded level of physiological effect. As a result, they leave out almost altogether the experience of the women who themselves have plastic surgery. This article draws from qualitative interviews with 20 female clients of a Long Island, NY plastic surgeon to explore cosmetic surgery as an occasion for autobiographical accounting and a particular kind of account of the self. Interview data suggest that plastic surgery allows women who undergo these procedures to successfully reposition their bodies as “normal” bodies. At the same time, it also requires them to create accounts that reattach the self to the surgically-“corrected”—but potentially “inauthentic”—body by invoking both essentialist notions of the self and corresponding notions of the body as accidental, inessential, or degenerated from a younger body that better represented who they truly are.

Abstract:The scholars keep on searching for a definition of a «national identity» concept, while many states are trying to understand the essence of their national identity, and Latin American countries are no exception. The states reconsider their attitudes towards their own history, their cultural roots. The Mexican artist Frida Kahlo has become a world-famous brand: books and articles are written about her, plays and ballets are dedicated to her, her image is placed on bags and clothes. Frida’s popularity can be explained by her peculiar painting style, which absorbed the key elements of national culture and reflected the Mexican people’s character. At the same time, not only did Frida absorb and vividly reflect the national identity of the country, but she herself also became a symbol, a myth of Mexico for both the Mexicans, and for the outside world. Frida Kahlo’s paintings represent various elements of the Mexican style of life, namely retablo, the national costume, Mexico’s nature, and the traditional beliefs and customs of the Indian peoples. Frida was a borderline painter: she looked forward, fighting for equality, for women’s rights, she was a member of the Communist Party; whereas as an artist, though using new, revolutionary forms of painting, she looked back to the history and traditions of her country.

Abstract:Pationts with sick sinus syndrome (SSS) can be treated either with single iead atrial pacing [AAI), single lead ventricular pacing (VVI), or duai chamber pacing (DDD). Both AAI and DDD pacing preserves the synchrony of atrial and ventricuiar contraction, and therefore resembles the normal cardiac function more closely than does VVI pacing. Despite this physiological superiority of AAI and DDD pacing, VVI pacemakers are still used in a large proportion of SSS patients.^'^ The reluctance wilh implantation of more physiological pacemakers may be related to difficulties with implantation of an atriai lead, the initial higher device cost of DDD units, and the more complex programming and foiiow-up of such pacemakers. Moreover, the lack of large scale prospective randomized trials to document which pacing mode is the superior probably also contributes significantly.
Beauty and healing: examining sociocultural expectations of the embodied goddess

Abstract:Studies indicate mental health improvement can occur via religious communities offering social support and other resources. Many people from many cultures regard medicine as a supernatural or magical treatment that can somehow lead to a better state of living. In medical advertising, female role portrayal involves the blending of beauty, ritual and attractiveness in combination with the best product image. A Chinese saying suggests that, "A girl will doll herself up for him who loves her." Female role attraction is a very important ethical subject in gender issues. Moving forward in time, female role visualization and consumption in medical advertising reveal depictions that encouraged women to do some self-searching and find, or develop, inner strength. This study is designed to examine female role portrayals in a restricted patriarchal society. The results indicate that the ideology of motherhood is an accepted social orientation that the public readily identifies with. Results further indicate that beautification through medical products incorporates an emotional element of religious healing and that the objectification of beauty in the media reveals a possible neglect of women's internal beauty.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to review portraits from the Renaissance to the Romantic eras, created before the invention of photography, and to discuss their usefulness to plastic surgeons. Before photography and film were invented, portraits played a critical role in documenting individuals, conveying power, and immortalizing people's appearance and identity. Portraits were not merely simple representations of a person's physical appearance; they played a crucial role in conveying the subject's inner qualities and social position, as well as the cultural values of the era. Artists often idealized or embellished certain features to align with the cultural and aesthetic ideals of their time. Portraits of the Renaissance to Romantic eras could have a significant impact on plastic surgeons' understanding of beauty and aesthetics. A plastic surgeon drawing on Renaissance ideals might prioritize symmetry and balanced facial features, which continue to be regarded as attractive in contemporary beauty standards. Beauty standards during these times favored curvaceous and lively figures, potentially inspiring modern plastic surgeons to focus on creating more dramatic or unique appearances. A plastic surgeon inspired by Romantic art might value uniqueness and avoid rigid beauty standards, focusing instead on enhancing a person's natural traits rather than conforming to a singular "ideal" appearance. Plastic surgeons could gain a richer, more classical perspective on aesthetics by studying historical art, potentially leading to more personalized and balanced outcomes. However, integrating these classical ideals into modern practice must also consider the diverse and varying definitions of beauty prevalent in today's multicultural society.

Collecting information from various fields, juxtaposing them on the historical time-line of artworks, the book focuses on space in self-portraits, shared between the person self-portraying and the viewer. What is the missing information of the transparent relationship to the self and what kind of world appears behind each selfie? As the ‘world behind one’s back’ is gradually taking larger place in the visual field, the book dwells on a capacity of selfies to master reality, the inter-mediate way and, in a measure, oneself.

Abstract:This paper describes a technique using photographic portraits in medical education to encourage close observation, cultivate empathic curiosity, explore learners' values and beliefs, and to reveal and reflect on fundamental biases. This new and evolving educational method uses the lens of psychotherapy to explore learners' experience of the portrait in a similar way we would discuss a case in psychodynamic supervision. Through close looking and small group engagement, the facilitator creates a space for deeper reflection and collaborative exploration of the therapeutic relationship, with emphasis on countertransference and the role of prior expectations. The exercise strengthens dialectical thinking through perspective-taking, challenging implicit assumptions and fostering cultural humility. Radiologists are taught to look in every corner of the X-ray and to observe each shadow, all while evaluating the entire image. Portraits can be examined in the same way, looking for subtle clues to the personality and history of the subject. Information from other sources confirms, or sometimes profoundly changes, our evaluation. In this example, we use a historical photographic portrait to demonstrate ways of engaging medical learners as they discover common psychotherapeutic approaches. The method has the potential to enhance therapeutic encounters, improve analytical skills and reduce bias.

Abstract:Background: To date, the process of adaptation in the setting of aesthetic medicine has not been investigated. The combination of complex advanced feedback in the current intense social media milieu, in conjunction with easily accessible and effective aesthetic treatments, has produced pockets of overtreated patients and over-zealous practitioners. We examine whether aesthetic assessments of attractiveness and what appears natural can be distorted by the cognitive process of adaptation. Methods: Forty-eight female participants were exposed to photographs of female faces in whom lip fullness had been strongly under- or over-exaggerated, while remaining within the bounds of natural appearing lips. Before and after evaluation of the exaggerated images, participants were asked to rate an alternative set of faces in terms of attractiveness (reflecting direct assessment of effective beauty impression) and naturalness (reflecting indirect assessment of beauty norms). The evaluation set consisted of six base faces that had been digitally altered to create a systematically varying 11 step set of lip sizes from extremely thin, to the original version, to very full. Results: Second-order polynomial fits indicated clear shifts of the subjects' facial aesthetic assessments towards the specific lip fullness of the adaptors. In contrast, such adaptions were not found for ratings of face naturalness. In contrast to research demonstrating mathematical foundations and unchanging rules governing perceptions of beauty, we show that simple viewing of exaggerated feature morphologies can rapidly result in recalibration of a person's assessment of attractiveness. Conclusion: This paper provides evidence that facial attractiveness is fluid, and that there are psychological mechanisms that cause an aesthetic bias. Over-exposure to exaggerated features can lead to significant changes to a person's ideas of attractiveness.

Abstract:The immense amount of research on benzodiazepines resulted in the synthesis of heterocycle-fused diazepine derivatives with potential pharmacological activity. Pyridoazepines are recognized to be active in the central nervous system and have a comparable activity to the well-known benzodiazepines. This makes the synthesis and the study of pyridodiazepines an important research topic. This review comprises of the synthesis and activity of pyridodiazepines, pyridooxazepines and pyridothiazepines. Although these structures have a great similarity with benzodiazepines, much less work has been published on their synthesis or derivatization. Therefore, there is a need to further develop these classes of underexplored scaffolds, in search for new chemistry, new methodology and hence new biological features.

Abstract:C. W. David Chang, M.D. Karen H. Calhoun, M.D. It is our pleasure as guest editors to present this issue of Facial Plastic Surgery. The topic of beauty is undoubtedly a highly debated and quite contentious issue discussed from Greek antiquity to modern day. The definition of beauty is a dynamic discourse that spans multiple disciplines. This issue endeavors to uncover the concepts of beauty from different angles and perspectives. Our traditional surgical texts prescribe standards of facial proportions, with the subtext that these proportions define standard facial beauty. Is there truly one standard definition of beauty? We have often heard the phrase that “beauty is in the eye of the beholder,” an easy way to explain away the varied philosophical and aesthetic opinions that we hold. However, perhaps this is an overly naïve and nonconfrontational excuse to a highly complicated subject. Are there unifying or universal characteristics or features that attract members of the human race to beautiful people or beautiful objects? Studies in sociology and psychology suggest that there may be common beauty ideals. On the flip side, as our society becomes increasingly transnational and our multicultural exposure increases, our Western ideals of facial beauty are being revised. One has only to look at the faces of fashion models to realize that aesthetically pleasing noses, eyes, and mouths come in all shapes and sizes. Media pictures shape our concepts and our patients' concepts of beauty. The facial ideal in our society's consciousness has seemingly moved away from a Western ideal and has embraced a more global one. Or has it? The movement is certainly not a “thoroughly-mixed” melting pot, as socially and economically advantaged mainstream media images-such as advertisements, pop stars, and celebrity icons-retain largely Anglo aesthetics. Is beauty equally prized in all elements of society? As social individuals, we seek solace in some uniformity, but simultaneously our desire for individualism prevents us from complete homogeneity. Not everybody wants to look alike. Do fashions such as “grunge,” “goth,” and “shabby-chic” yearn for an antiaesthetic stance? Have artists-who are most concerned with individualism-deserted tradition (and thus beauty) to create uniqueness in their works? We realize that this issue may spark more questions than answers, more divergence than convergence, and more confusion than clarity. Such is the nature of beauty.

'Magic cosmetic fillers': Appearance-enhancement effects on self–face recognition

Abstract:People naturally exhibit a self-serving bias which can be observed in their tendency to judge their own physical attractiveness more favourably than that of others. Despite this positive self-perception, minimally invasive cosmetic injectable procedures for facial rejuvenation and enhancement are becoming increasingly common. It remains unclear, however, whether recognizing an altered version of one's own face, enhanced cosmetically, correlates with a positive view of cosmetic surgery and excessive preoccupations about physical characteristics perceived as defects (body dysmorphic concerns). In this study, 30 healthy female participants, aged 18–24 years (Mage = 21.1 years, SD = 1.6), engaged in a face recognition task during which their faces were digitally morphed with that of gender-matched unfamiliar women who had undergone cosmetic enhancements, specifically lip and cheek fillers. The duration of exposure to these modified faces varied with short (500 msec) and long (2000 msec) viewing periods. Participants were asked to identify whether the digital morphs represented themselves or the other woman. Self-reports regarding acceptance of cosmetic surgery and dysmorphic concerns were collected. Participants PSE indicated a tendency towards self-bias under short presentation times, shifting towards the other as presentation times lengthened. Interestingly, this effect was associated with greater acceptance of cosmetic surgery and higher body dysmorphic concerns. This study underscores the importance of understanding how perceptions of others' physical appearances can influence self-recognition and attitudes towards cosmetic surgery, which may have both positive and potentially harmful implications.

Gender Critique of The Scientific and Medical Construction of the Female Body in Women’s Artworks

Abstract:In this paper I will develop a gender critique of scientific and medical idealizations of the human body and its health, which was performed out of gender and feminist studies, pointing also to women’s art. In the discourses of medicine, healthy and beautiful human – and especially the female human – body is revealed as an ideological construction, an affective agent and a biopolitical ideal that controls and regulates gender differences. My intention is to demonstrate that the discourses of medicine, feminism, and art are in a dialogue historically in relation to these topics. Following Tasha N. Dubriwny’s discussion of medical discourse and practice, I will map three phases in the development of Western medical discourses and point to the fact that they are in dialogue with feminist discourses and with the way how art treats and represents beautiful bodies, and/or sick bodies, with particular focus on female bodies. Discussion of the first phase of medical development points to the fact that visual art and photography were used to performatively help doctors to construct the female body as sick and deviant, as Didi Huberman showed. The second phase was the medicalization era, in which human bodies are expected to adhere to a standardized norm. In this period, within the framework of second wave feminism, feminist health activists appeared, forming the women's movement for health. Special attention will be directed to the third phase, the biomedicalization era or inclusion-and-difference paradigm, in which postfeminist discourses appeared and in relation to which I will discuss artworks by Hannah Wilke, Katarzyna Kozyra, and Orlan.
The Modern-Day Feminine Beauty Ideal, Mental Health, and Jungian Archetypes

Abstract:Introduction: It can be argued that beauty is not only an aesthetic value, but it is also a social capital which is supported by the global beauty industry. Advertising kindly offers all kinds of ways to acquire and maintain beauty and youth that require large investments. Recent studies demonstrate that physical attractiveness guided by modern sociocultural standards is associated with a higher level of psychological well-being, social ease, assertiveness, and confidence. What is behind this pursuit of ideal beauty and eternal youth: the life-long struggle for survival, selfless love for beauty, or something else that lurks in the depths of the human unconscious? Purpose: The aim of the paper is to analyze the modern-day feminine beauty ideal through the lens of Jungian archetypes. Methodology: An extensive literary review of relevant articles for the period 2000-2020 was performed using PubMed and Google databases, with the following key words: “Feminine beauty ideal, body image, beauty and youth, mental health problems, C.G. Jung, archetypes of collective unconsciousness”. Along with it, the author used Jung’s theory of archetypes, integrative anthropological approach, and hermeneutical methodology. Results and Discussion: Advertising and the beauty industry have a huge impact on women and their self-image. Exposure to visual media depicting idealized faces and bodies causes a negative or distorted self-image. The new globalized and homogenized beauty ideal emphasizes youth and slimness. Over the past few decades, the emphasis on this ideal has been accompanied by an increase in the level of dissatisfaction with their bodies among both women and men. Though face and body image concerns are not a mental health condition in themselves, they have a negative impact on women’s mental health being associated with body dysmorphic disorder, social anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, depression, eating disorders, psychological distress, low self-esteem, self-harm, suicidal feelings. These trends are of real concern. The interiorization of the modern standards of female beauty as the image of a young girl impedes the psychological development of women and causes disintegration disabling the interconnection of all elements of the psyche and giving rise to deep contradictions. This unattainable ideal is embodied in the Jungian archetype of the Kore. Without maturity transformations, the image of the Kore, which is so attractive to the modern world, indicates an undeveloped part of the personality. Her inability to grow up and become mature has dangerous consequences. Women “restrain their forward movement” becoming an ideal object of manipulation. Thus, they easily internalize someone’s ideas about what the world should be and about their “right” place in it losing the ability to think critically and giving away power over their lives. Conclusion: Overcoming the psychological threshold of growing up, achieving deep experience and inner growth, a woman discovers another aspect of the Kore, ceases to be an object of manipulation and accepts reality as it is, while her beauty becomes multifaceted and reflects all aspects of her true personality

Abstract:Photographic representations of women living with or beyond breast cancer have gained prominence in recent decades. Postmillennial visual narratives are both documentary projects and dialogic sites of self-construction and reader-viewer witness. After a brief overview of 30 years of breast cancer photography, this essay analyzes a collaborative photo-documentary by Stephanie Byram and Charlee Brodsky, Knowing Stephanie (2003), and a memorial photographic essay by Brodsky written ten years after Byram's death, "Remembering Stephanie" (2014). The ethics of representing women's postsurgical bodies and opportunities for reader-viewers to engage in "productive looking" (Kaja Silverman's concept) are the focal issues under consideration.
