Abstract:In this paper we derive three new asymptotic models for an hyperbolic-hyperbolicelliptic system of PDEs describing the motion of a collision-free plasma in a magnetic field. The first of these models takes the form of a non-linear and non-local Boussinesq system (for the ionic density and velocity) while the second is a non-local wave equation (for the ionic density). Moreover, we derive a unidirectional asymptotic model of the later which is closely related to the well-known Fornberg-Whitham equation. We also provide the well-posedness of these asymptotic models in Sobolev spaces. To conclude, we demonstrate the existence of a class of initial data which exhibit wave breaking for the unidirectional model.

Abstract:We present a numerical solution of the quantum Lenard-Balescu equation using a spectral method, namely an expansion in Laguerre polynomials. This method exactly conserves both particles and energy and facilitates the integration over the dielectric function. To demonstrate the method, we solve the equilibration problem for a spatially homogeneous one-component plasma with various initial conditions. Unlike the more usual Landau/Fokker-Planck system, this method requires no input Coulomb logarithm; the logarithmic terms in the collision integral arise naturally from the equation along with the non-logarithmic order-unity terms. The spectral method can also be used to solve the Landau equation and a quantum version of the Landau equation in which the integration over the wavenumber requires only a lower cutoff. We solve these problems as well and compare them with the full Lenard-Balescu solution in the weak-coupling limit. Finally, we discuss the possible generalization of this method to include spatial inhomogeneity and velocity anisotropy.

Geometric Particle-In-Cell discretizations of a plasma hybrid model with kinetic ions and mass-less fluid electrons

Abstract:We explore the possibilities of applying structure-preserving numerical methods to a plasma hybrid model with kinetic ions and mass-less fluid electrons satisfying the quasi-neutrality relation. The numerical schemes are derived by finite element methods in the framework of finite element exterior calculus (FEEC) for field variables, particle-in-cell (PIC) methods for the Vlasov equation, and splitting methods in time based on an anti-symmetric bracket proposed. Conservation properties of energy, quasi-neutrality relation, positivity of density, and divergence-free property of the magnetic field are given irrespective of the used resolution and metric. Local quasi-interpolation is used for dealing with the current terms in order to make the proposed methods more efficient. The implementation has been done in the framework of the Python package STRUPHY [1], and has been verified by extensive numerical experiments.

Abstract:Hydrodynamic equations for a one-component plasma are derived as a generalization of the Euler equations to include the effects of the long-range Coulomb interaction. By using a variational principle, these equations self-consistently unify thermodynamics, dispersion laws, nonlinear motion, and conservation laws. In the moderate and strong coupling limits, it is argued that these equations work down to the length scale of the average interparticle spacing. Closure and self-consistency of these nonlocal equations are achieved via the implementation of a variational principle. Hydrodynamic equations are evaluated in both the Eulerian frame, where the dependent variables depend on the position in the laboratory, and the Lagrangian frame, where they depend on the position in some reference state, such as the initial position. Each frame has its advantages and our final theory combines elements of both. The properties of longitudinal and transverse dispersion laws are calculated for the hydrodynamic equations. A simple step function approximation for the pair distribution function is used that allows for simple calculations that reveal the structure of the equations of motion. The obtained dispersion laws are compared to molecular dynamics simulations and the theory of quasilocalized charge approximation. The action, which gives excellent agreement for both longitudinal and transverse dispersion laws for a wide range of coupling strengths, is elucidated. Agreement with numerical experiments shows that such a hydrodynamic approach can be used to accurately describe a one-component plasma at very small length scales comparable to the average interparticle spacing. The validity of this approach suggests considering nonlinear flows and other systems with long-range interactions in the future.

The Generalized Quasilinear Approximation: Application to Zonal Jets

Abstract:Quasilinear theory is often utilized to approximate the dynamics of fluids exhibiting significant interactions between mean flows and eddies. In this paper we present a generalization of quasilinear theory to include dynamic mode interactions on the large scales. This generalized quasilinear (GQL) approximation is achieved by separating the state variables into large and small zonal scales via a spectral filter rather than by a decomposition into a formal mean and fluctuations. Nonlinear interactions involving only small zonal scales are then removed. The approximation is conservative and allows for scattering of energy between small-scale modes via the large scale (through non-local spectral interactions). We evaluate GQL for the paradigmatic problems of the driving of large-scale jets on a spherical surface and on the beta-plane and show that it is accurate even for a small number of large-scale modes. As this approximation is formally linear in the small zonal scales it allows for the closure of the system and can be utilized in direct statistical simulation schemes that have proved an attractive alternative to direct numerical simulation for many geophysical and astrophysical problems.

Deriving improved plasma fluid equations from collisional kinetic theory

Abstract:Developing a quantitative understanding of wave plasma processes in the lower ionosphere requires a reasonably accurate theoretical description of the underlying physical processes. For such highly collisional plasma environment as the E-region ionosphere, kinetic theory represents the most accurate theoretical description of wave processes. For the analytical treatment, however, the collisional kinetic theory is extremely complicated and succeeds only in a limited number of physical problems. To date, most research applied oversimplified fluid models that lack a number of critical kinetic aspects, so that the coefficients in the corresponding fluid equations are often accurate only to an order of magnitude. This paper presents the derivation for the highly collisional, partially magnetized case relevant to E-region conditions. It provides a more accurate reduction of the ion and, especially, electron kinetic equations to the corresponding 5-moment fluid equations by using a new set of analytic approximations. This derivation results in more accurate fluid-model set of equations appropriate for most E-region problems. The results of this paper could be used for a routine practical analysis when working with actual data. The improved equations can also serve as a basis for more accurate plasma fluid computer simulations.

Abstract:The quasistatic approximation (QSA) is an efficient method of simulating laser- and beam-driven plasma wakefield acceleration, but it becomes imprecise if some plasma particles make long longitudinal excursions in a strongly nonlinear wave, or if waves with non-zero group velocity are present in the plasma, or the plasma density gradients are sharp, or the beam shape changes rapidly. We present an extension to QSA that is free from its limitations and retains its main advantages of speed and reduced dimensionality. The new approach takes into account the exchange of information between adjacent plasma layers. We introduce the physical model, describe its numerical implementation, and compare the simulation results with available analytical solutions and other codes.

Weak solutions for weak turbulence models in electrostatic plasmas

Abstract:The weak turbulence model, also known as the quasilinear theory in plasma physics, has been a cornerstone in modeling resonant particle-wave interactions in plasmas. This reduced model stems from the Vlasov-Poisson/Maxwell system under the weak turbulence assumption, incorporating the random phase approximation and ergodicity. The interaction between particles and waves (plasmons) can be treated as a stochastic process, whose transition probability bridges the momentum space and the spectral space. Therefore, the operators on the right hand side resemble collision forms, such as those in Boltzmann and Landau interacting models. For them, there have been results on well-posedness and regularity of solutions. However, as far as we know, there is no such preceding work for the quasilinear theory addressed in this manuscript. In this paper, we establish the existence of global weak solutions for the system modeling electrostatic plasmas in one dimension. Our key contribution consists of associating the original integral-differential system to a degenerate inhomogeneous porous medium equation(PME) with nonlinear source terms, and leveraging advanced techniques from the PME literature. This approach opens a novel pathway for analyzing weak turbulence models in plasma physics. Moreover, our work offers new tools for tackling related problems in the broader context of nonlinear nonlocal PDEs.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to investigating the rotating Boussinesq equations of inviscid, incompressible flows with both fast Rossby waves and fast internal gravity waves. The main objective is to establish a rigorous derivation and justification of a new generalized quasi-geostrophic approximation in a channel domain with no normal flow at the upper and lower solid boundaries, taking into account the resonance terms due to the fast and slow waves interactions. Under these circumstances, We are able to obtain uniform estimates and compactness without the requirement of either well-prepared initial data (as in [10]) or domain with no boundary (as in [17]). In particular, the nonlinear resonances and the new limit system, which takes into account the fast waves correction to the slow waves dynamics, are also identified without introducing Fourier series expansion. The key ingredient includes the introduction of (full) generalized potential vorticity.

Multi-Physics Mathematical Model for Weakly-Ionized Plasma Flows

Abstract:This work presents a multidisciplinary mathematical model, as a set of coupled governing equations and auxiliary relations describing the fluid-flow, thermal, and electric fields of partially-ionized plasma with low magnetic Reynolds numbers. The model is generic enough to handle three-dimensionality, Hall effect, compressibility, and variability of fluid, thermal, and electric properties of the plasma. The model can be of interest to computational modelers aiming to build a solver that quantitatively assesses direct extraction of electric energy from a plasma flow. Three different approaches are proposed to solve numerically for the electric fields with different levels of tolerance toward possible numerical instability encountered at a large Hall parameter, where the effective conductivity tensor loses diagonal dominance and becomes close to singular. A submodel for calculating the local electric properties of the plasma is presented in detail and is applied to demonstrate the effect of different factors on the electric conductivity, including the fuel's carbon/hydrogen ratio and the alkaline seed element that acts as the ionizing species. An analytical expression for the collision cross-section for argon is developed, such that this noble gas can be included as one of the gaseous species comprising the plasma.

Abstract:An effective approach for construction of simple approximation for description of non-ideality effects in classical one- and two-component plasma model is under discussion. General constraints i.e. positiveness and exponential type for radial distribution functions F2(r) combined with normalizing (local electroneutrality) conditions, which validity is independent on degree of non-ideality, are used for effective correction of several well-known approximated forms of F(r). Resulting corrected forms F*(r) leads to non-ideality corrections, which are asymptotically exact in the weak non-ideality limit and at the same time have good extrapolating properties in the strong non-ideality limit. The simplest example - corrected Debye-Hueckel approximation - leads to simple and explicit form of such non-ideality corrections. The same approach is applied to classical two-component plasma model. Resulting corrected approximation gives smooth and plausible interpolation between weak and strong non-ideality limits.

Abstract:A two-fluid model is derived from the plasma kinetic equations using themoment model reduction method. The moment method we adopt was recentlydeveloped with a globally hyperbolic regularization where the moment modelattained is locally well-posed in time. Based on the hyperbolic moment modelwith well-posedness, the Maxwellian iteration method is utilized to get theclosure relations for the resulted two-fluid model. By taking the Shakhovcollision operator in the Maxwellian iteration, the two-fluid model inheritsthe correct Prandtl number from the plasma kinetic equations. The new model isformally the same as the five-moment two-fluid model except for the closurerelations, where the pressure tensor is anisotropic and the heat flux ispresented. This provides the model the capacity to depict problems withanisotropic pressure tensor and large heat flux.
Quaternionic approach on the Dirac-Maxwell, Bernoulli and Navier-Stokes equations for dyonic fluid plasma

Abstract:Applying the Hamilton's quaternion algebra, we propose the generalized electromagnetic-fluid dynamics of dyons governed by the combination of the Dirac-Maxwell, Bernoulli and Navier-Stokes equations. The generalized quaternionic hydro-electromagnetic field of dyonic cold plasma consist the electrons and the magnetic monopoles in which there exist dual-mass and dual-charge species in presence of dyons. We construct the conservation of energy and conservation of momentum equations by equating the quaternionic scalar and vector parts for generalized hydro-electromagnetic field of dyonic cold plasma. We propose the quaternionic form of conservation of energy is related to the Bernoulli's like equation while the conservation of momentum is related to Navier-Stokes like equation for dynamics of dyonic plasma fluid. Further, the continuity equation i.e. the conservation of electric and magnetic charges with the dynamics of hydro-electric and hydro-magnetic flow of conducting cold plasma fluid is also analyzed. The quaternionic formalism for dyonic plasma wave emphasizes that there are two types of waves propagation namely the Langmuir like wave propagation due to electrons, and the t-Hooft-Polyakov like wave propagation due to magnetic monopoles.

A conservative Galerkin solver for the quasilinear diffusion model in magnetized plasmas

Abstract:The quasilinear theory describes the resonant interaction between particles and waves with two coupled equations: one for the evolution of the particle probability density function(\textit{pdf}), the other for the wave spectral energy density(\textit{sed}). In this paper, we propose a conservative Galerkin scheme for the quasilinear model in three-dimensional momentum space and three-dimensional spectral space, with cylindrical symmetry. We construct an unconditionally conservative weak form, and propose a discretization that preserves the unconditional conservation property, by "unconditional" we mean that conservation is independent of the singular transition probability. The discrete operators, combined with a consistent quadrature rule, will preserve all the conservation laws rigorously. The technique we propose is quite general: it works for both relativistic and non-relativistic systems, for both magnetized and unmagnetized plasmas, and even for problems with time-dependent dispersion relations. We represent the particle \textit{pdf} by continuous basis functions, and use discontinuous basis functions for the wave \textit{sed}, thus enabling the application of a positivity-preserving technique. The marching simplex algorithm, which was initially designed for computer graphics, is adopted for numerical integration on the resonance manifold. We introduce a semi-implicit time discretization, and discuss the stability condition. In addition, we present numerical examples with a "bump on tail" initial configuration, showing that the particle-wave interaction results in a strong anisotropic diffusion effect on the particle \textit{pdf}.

Quantum kinetics derivation as generalization of the quantum hydrodynamics method

Abstract:We present a new way of quantum kinetic equation derivation. This method appears as a natural generalization of the many-particle quantum hydrodynamic method. Kinetic equations are derived for different system of particles. First of all we consider quantum plasma and pay special attention to the spin evolution. We show that we need a set of two kinetic equations for description of spinning particles. One of these equations is the equation for distribution function, however this equation contains new function, even in the self-consistent field approximation. This is a spin-distribution function introduced in the paper. Therefore we have to derive kinetic equation for spin distribution function evolution, which is presented here and used to construct a closed set of kinetic equations. We also present kinetic equation for system of neutral particles with a short-range interaction in the first order by the interaction radius approximation. We derive a set of kinetic equations for particles having electric dipole moment, this set analogous to the equations set for spinning particles, but it has some differences. As a special topic we find kinetic equations for graphene carriers in the vicinity of the Dirac points. Derived equations, in general case, contain two-particle distribution functions, which take into account contribution of the quantum correlations including the exchange interaction, but we restrict ourself by the self-consistent field approximation to obtain closed kinetic description, in the system of particles with the short-range interaction.

Abstract:A spectral quasilinear approach to the problem of TEM-Weibel instability in an anisotropic collisionless plasma is developed, which takes into account only the integral nonlinear interaction of modes through the joint variation of the spatially averaged particle velocity distribution induced by these modes. Within this approximation, a closed system of equations is obtained for the one- and two-dimensional evolution of spatial modes (harmonics) of the distribution function of particles and the electromagnetic field under conditions when the plasma anisotropy axis, the wave vector, and the magnetic field of the modes are orthogonal to each other. The numerical solution of this system of equations is compared with the available results of one-dimensional analytical quasilinear theory in the region of its applicability, as well as with the results of two-dimensional simulation by the particle-in-cell method, which also takes into account the direct four-wave interaction of modes. It is established that in the simplest cases of one-dimensional and axially symmetric two-dimensional problems for a bi-Maxwellian plasma, quasilinear phenomena play the leading role at a quite long stage of nonlinear development of turbulence. It is noted that at a later stage of decay of turbulence and in a more general formulation of the problem, in particular, in the presence of an external magnetic field, the direct nonlinear interaction of modes can manifest itself along with quasilinear phenomena. Based on the analysis carried out, the contribution of certain nonlinear effects to the evolution of the spatial spectrum of Weibel turbulence is revealed, and the properties of this turbulence are studied, including the self-similar character and qualitatively different stages of the dynamics of unstable modes.

Abstract:In this paper, the authors consider an approximation to the isentropic planar Magneto-hydrodynamics (MHD for short) equations by a kind of relaxed Euler-type system. The approximation is based on the generalization of the Maxwell law for non-Newtonian fluids together with the Maxwell correction for the Ampère law, hence the approximate system becomes a first-order quasilinear symmetrizable hyperbolic systems with partial dissipation. They establish the global-in-time smooth solutions to the approximate Euler-type equations in a small neighbourhood of constant equilibrium states and obtain the global-in-time convergence towards the isentropic planar MHD equations. In addition, they also establish the global-in-time error estimates of the limit based on stream function techniques and energy estimates for error variables.

Complete quasilinear model for the acceleration-driven lower hybrid drift instability and a computational assessment of its validity

Abstract:A complete quasilinear model is derived for the electrostatic acceleration-driven lower hybrid drift instability in a uniform two-species low-beta plasma in which current is perpendicular to the background magnetic field. The model consists of coupled nonlinear velocity space diffusion equations for the volume-averaged ion and electron distribution functions. Each species' diffusion coefficient depends on a time-evolving spectral density of the electric-field energy per unit volume and a time-evolving dispersion relation. The dispersion relation is expressed analytically in integral form without the use of asymptotic limits and applies to arbitrary distribution functions, so long as they can be expressed as a function of one velocity coordinate, e.g., f(v_{y}) or f(v_{⊥}). The quasilinear model conserves energy and is complete in that it fully describes the evolution of the distribution functions, including resonant and nonresonant particle-wave interactions, while accounting for distribution-function-dependent mixed-complex frequencies. The quasilinear diffusion model is solved numerically and self-consistently using a Crank-Nicolson temporal discretization and a second-order finite-volume velocity-space discretization. Numerical solutions are compared to nonlinear fourth-order accurate continuum kinetic Vlasov-Poisson simulations. Evolution of electric-field energy, growth rates, distribution functions, and diffusion coefficients are shown to be in agreement with Vlasov simulations. The quasilinear model is shown to predict anomalous transport terms, like resistivity and heating, to within a factor of order unity. Discrepancies between the quasilinear model and Vlasov simulations are assessed and attributed primarily to lack of damping in the quasilinear description and to the use of unperturbed-orbit susceptibilities in the linear theory dispersion relation. The results illuminate the predictive accuracy of the quasilinear model, place approximate bounds on its validity, and provide much needed vetting of quasilinear theory's ability to predict the nonlinear state of a microturbulent plasma.
Generalised quasilinear approximations of turbulent channel flow. Part 2. Spanwise triadic scale interactions

Abstract:Continuing from Part 1 (Hernández et al., J. Fluid Mech., vol. 936, 2022, A33), a generalised quasilinear (GQL) approximation is studied in turbulent channel flow using a flow decomposition defined with spanwise Fourier modes: the flow is decomposed into a set of low-wavenumber spanwise Fourier modes and the rest high-wavenumber modes. This decomposition leads to the nonlinear low-wavenumber group that supports the self-sustaining process within the given integral length scales, whereas the linearised high-wavenumber group is not able to do so, unlike the GQL models in Part 1, which place a minimal mathematical description for the self-sustaining process across all integral scales. Despite the important physical difference, it is shown that the GQL models in this study share some similarities with those in Part 1, i.e. the reduced multi-scale behaviour and anisotropic turbulent fluctuations. Furthermore, despite not being able to support the self-sustaining process in the high-wavenumber group, the GQL models in the present study are found to reproduce some key statistical features in the high-wavenumber group solely through the 'scattering' mechanism proposed by previous studies. Finally, using the nature of the GQL approximation, a further set of numerical experiments suppressing certain triadic nonlinear interactions are carried out. This unveils some key roles played by certain types of triadic interactions, including energy cascade and inverse energy transfer in the near-wall region. In particular, the inhibition of inverse energy transfer in the spanwise direction leads to suppression of the near-wall positive turbulent transport at large scales.
