Abstract:
A new 3d transition metal high entropy alloy (3d TM HEA) CoFeNiTiV was prepared by vacuum arc-melting. The phase component, microstructure and mechanical properties of CoFeNiTiV alloy were investigated thoroughly, with the comparison of CoFeNiTi-base alloys. The results show that both CoFeNiTiV and CoFeNiTiAl consists of a typical single bcc phase, while the CoFeNiTiCr and CoFeNiTiCu alloys are both composed of a single fcc phase although they are all CoFeNiTi based alloys. The effectiveness of VEC has been confirmed in the studied alloy system. From the perspective of the elemental role on microstructure, Ti is beneficial to the formation of compounds, while the elemental V, Cu, Al or Cr promote the formation of single-phase solid solution. Moreover, the yield strength reaches 2730 MPa and ultimate compressive strength of CoFeNiTiV alloy is up to 3890 MPa, which is the highest of all CoFeNiTi based HEAs, even of all 3d TM HEAs up to date. Meanwhile, it exhibits a good ductility of 21.3%. This excellent strength-ductility synergy of CoFeNiTiV alloy might stem from the majority constitution of bcc phase, solid-solution strengthening, the strong bonding among the principal elements and the inhabitation of cracking nucleation owing to the uniform solute distribution.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper primarily explores the preparation, structure, and mechanical properties of a novel equiatomic high entropy alloy (HEA) — CoFeNiTiV alloy. Specifically, the researchers prepared this 3d transition metal high entropy alloy using the vacuum arc melting method and conducted a detailed analysis of its phase composition, microstructure, and mechanical properties. ### Main Research Questions 1. **Formation of Single-phase bcc Structure**: The study found that the CoFeNiTiV alloy exhibits a typical single-phase body-centered cubic (bcc) structure, similar to the CoFeNiTiAl alloy; whereas the CoFeNiTiCr and CoFeNiTiCu alloys exhibit a face-centered cubic (fcc) single-phase structure, despite all being based on the CoFeNiTi alloy system. This indicates that the type of alloying elements has a significant impact on the phase structure of the alloy. 2. **Effect of Valence Electron Concentration (VEC)**: By calculating the VEC values of different alloys, the researchers found that VEC is an effective parameter for predicting the phase structure of alloys. For example, adding V or Al to the CoFeNiTi base can transform the alloy from fcc to bcc, while adding Cu or Cr helps maintain the fcc phase structure. 3. **Optimization of Mechanical Properties**: Experimental results show that the CoFeNiTiV alloy exhibits excellent comprehensive mechanical properties, including a yield strength of up to 2730 MPa and an ultimate compressive strength of 3890 MPa. These values are not only the highest among all CoFeNiTi-based HEAs but also the highest among all 3d transition metal HEAs. Additionally, the alloy demonstrates good plasticity (21.3% elongation). ### Conclusion The paper experimentally verifies that under specific conditions, the phase structure of the alloy can be effectively controlled by adjusting the types of alloying elements, thereby optimizing its mechanical properties. In particular, the combination of high strength and good plasticity exhibited by the CoFeNiTiV alloy is attributed to its bcc single-phase structure, solid solution strengthening effect, strong bonding between principal elements, and the crack initiation inhibition effect brought by the uniform solute distribution.
