Linking responses of native and invasive plants to hurricane disturbances: implications for coastal plant community structure

Abstract:Hurricane disturbances produce significant changes in forest microclimates, creating opportunities for seedling regeneration of native and invasive plant species alike. However, there is limited information on how changes in microclimates and pre-existing forest conditions affect native and invasive plants responses to hurricane disturbances. In this manipulative study, we examined the responses of three common shrub/small stature tree species, two of which are native to the coastal region of the southeastern USA (Baccharis halimifolia and Morella cerifera) and one that is invasive (Triadica sebifera), to two key components of hurricane disturbance (canopy damage and saline storm surge). In a greenhouse, we grew seedlings of these species under a range of shade levels that mimicked pre-and post-hurricane canopy conditions for wet pine forest and mixed hardwood forest, two forest communities common in coastal areas of the southeastern USA. Seedlings were subjected to saline storm surges equivalent to full strength sea water for 3 days. Seedling responses (mortality and growth) to the treatments were monitored for 16 months. All species benefitted from higher canopy openness. Storm surge effects were short-lived and seedlings readily recovered under high light conditions. The storm surge had stronger negative effects on survival and growth of all species when coupled with high shade, suggesting storm surge has greater negative impacts on seedlings where hurricane winds cause minimal or no canopy damage. The invasive T. sebifera was by far more shade tolerant than the natives. Survival of T. sebifera seedlings under highly shaded conditions may provide it a competitive edge over native species during community reassembly following tropical storms. Differential responses of native and invasive species to hurricane disturbances will have profound consequences on community structure across coastal forest stands, and may be regulated by legacies of prior disturbances, community structure, extent of canopy damage, and species' tolerance to specific microclimates.

Abstract:Aridity and local climate predictably affect the susceptibility of stream invertebrates to hurricane disturbances. Disturbances can produce a spectrum of short‐ and long‐term ecological consequences that depend on complex interactions of the characteristics of the event, antecedent environmental conditions, and the intrinsic properties of resistance and resilience of the affected biological system. We used Hurricane Harvey's impact on coastal rivers of Texas to examine the roles of storm‐related changes in hydrology and long‐term precipitation regime on the response of stream invertebrate communities to hurricane disturbance. We detected declines in richness, diversity and total abundance following the storm, but responses were strongly tied to direct and indirect effects of long‐term aridity and short‐term changes in stream hydrology. The amount of rainfall a site received drove both flood duration and flood magnitude across sites, but lower annual rainfall amounts (i.e. aridity) increased flood magnitude and decreased flood duration. Across all sites, flood duration was positively related to the time it took for invertebrate communities to return to a long‐term baseline and flood magnitude drove larger invertebrate community responses (i.e. changes in diversity and total abundance). However, invertebrate response per unit flood magnitude was lower in sub‐humid sites, potentially because of differences in refuge availability or ecological‐evolutionary interactions. Interestingly, sub‐humid streams had temporary large peaks in invertebrate total abundance and diversity following recovery period that may be indicative of the larger organic matter pulses expected in these systems because of their comparatively well‐developed riparian vegetation. Our findings show that hydrology and long‐term precipitation regime predictably affected invertebrate community responses and, thus, our work underscores the important influence of local climate to ecosystem sensitivity to disturbances.

Influence of a simulated hurricane on aquatic insect recolonization in the phytotelma of Heliconia caribaea (Heliconiacaea)

Abstract:We hypothesized that a simulated hurricane disturbance on invertebrates inhabiting the phytotelma (plant‐held waters) of Heliconia caribaea would alter diversity and community composition, and that larger inflorescences would attract more species during recolonization due to the area‐diversity relationship described by the Theory of Island Biogeography. We found no support for our size‐diversity hypothesis but detected significant changes in richness, evenness, diversity, and community composition following the disturbance, with higher turnover (β diversity) in smaller sized inflorescences potentially reflecting high habitat heterogeneity within Heliconia. Disturbances like hurricanes can affect diversity and community composition, which may in turn affect ecosystem function. We examined how a simulated hurricane disturbance affected insect communities inhabiting the phytotelma (plant‐held waters) of Heliconia caribaea in the Luquillo Experimental Forest of eastern Puerto Rico, a tropical island that frequently experiences hurricanes. We hypothesized that disturbance would alter diversity and that larger Heliconia would attract more species following disturbance due to the area‐diversity relationship described by the Theory of Island Biogeography. Individual flower parts (bracts) of Heliconia inflorescences (racemes) were artificially disturbed via removal of existing insect communities, then after refilling with water, cohorts of Heliconia were destructively sampled biweekly for 6 weeks to assess recolonization patterns of α (bract level), β, and γ (summed across bracts; raceme level) diversity over time and across raceme sizes. Although we found no support for our hypothesis about the effect of raceme size on recolonization, our hypothesis regarding recolonization patterns over time was supported; species richness, evenness, and abundance of bracts increased directly after the disturbance and then decreased below pre‐disturbance levels, and community composition at the raceme level changed significantly over time during recolonization. β Diversity was also greater in smaller racemes compared to larger racemes, suggesting high heterogeneity across bracts of Heliconia racemes exacerbated by raceme size and age. Overall, our results highlight the importance of scale and appropriate measurements of diversity (particularly α) in experiments aiming to extrapolate conclusions about the ecological impacts of disturbances across different habitats and ecosystems.

Abstract:Extreme climatic events (ECEs) are predicted to increase in frequency and magnitude under scenarios of global change. It is well known that ECEs impact community structure and dynamics, but how ECEs alter community assembly remains unclear. The strength of local neighborhood interactions should be altered following ECEs, which could provide a mechanistic basis for how ECEs impact forest community dynamics. In a subtropical forest in China, we monitored the survival of more than 7800 understory seedlings representing 116 tree and shrub species since 2006, and this forest experienced an extreme and unexpected winter storm in February 2008. Here, we quantified changes in the effects of intraspecific and interspecific competition, as well as the effects of environmental variables driving seedling survival before and after the storm. We found that seedling density and Simpson diversity greatly increased after the winter storm. Seedling mortality and recruitment peaked in the second year after the storm, and then returned to pre-storm levels in subsequent census years. Seedling survival was negatively affected by conspecific and heterospecific tree density before the winter storm, while after the storm, survival was affected by conspecific seedling density and nearest taxon functional diversity (NTFd') of tree neighbors, as well as by environmental variables. Moreover, we found a significant difference between abundant and less-abundant species in response to local neighborhood interactions before and after the storm. In short, community dynamics and the effects of local neighborhood on seedling survival were significantly altered following the extreme winter storm. Our study suggests that integrating abiotic and biotic interactions before and after ECEs, and taking functional traits into consideration, contributes to a better understanding of the biological response of forest community dynamics to environmental fluctuations.
Tree damage, growth and phenology after a hurricane in a tropical dry forest in Veracruz

Abstract:As a major disturbance, hurricanes affect growth and phenology of trees. Tree diameters were annually measured for three years, and the phenology of 16 tree species monthly recorded in a seasonally dry tropical forest in Veracruz, Mexico, when on September 2010, Hurricane Karl struck the region. One month later, tree damage was recorded and phenological observations resumed for 12 more months, and diameter measurement for two more years. Tree damage due to the hurricane was high: 10 % were uprooted, 7 % broken and 2 % bent. All trees uprooted died, but some broken or bent trunk trees resprouted (15 % of tagged trees died). Overall, mean diameter growth of trees that survive the hurricane (0.79 cm yr-1) was greater than pre-hurricane growth rate (0.68 cm yr-1). For all the studied species together, leaf fall, leafing, and flowering phenology did not differ between pre- and post-hurricane whereas fruiting was lower for the post-hurricane year. At species level, most species displayed differences in reproductive phenology between pre-hurricane and post-hurricane years. Most species did not flower, lower flowering and fruiting (Calyptranthes schiedeana), or did not fruit (Luehea candida, Maclura tinctoria, Tabebuia chrysantha) the year following the hurricane. In conclusion, due to hurricane damage, tree mortality was high but many trees recovered from damage, and that the hurricane negatively influenced intensity in reproductive phenology, and in turn may alter forest structure, shift species composition, and affect the trophic relationships and functioning of the whole forest community.
Response of a Phytoplankton Community in a Subtropical Estuary to a Pulse Disturbance Driven by a Combo Hurricane and Extreme Rainfall Event

Abstract:Major precipitation events from destructive hurricanes can change the hydrodynamics of estuaries. Indeed, water rather than wind was the major destructive force behind Hurricane Harvey, the category 4 storm that stalled over Texas in August 2017. Herein, we present a unique examination of the phytoplankton community as it responded to the changing hydrodynamic conditions in Galveston Bay. We used traditional (primary productivity, pigments, Fluorescence Induction and Relaxation System, pulse-amplitude modulation fluorometer), and modern (Imagining FlowCytobot [IFCB], 16S rRNA, and 18S rRNA gene sequencing) approaches to characterize the phytoplankton community and their physiological response. Phytoplankton communities transitioned from pre-storm estuarine to freshwater species and then began to transition back to an estuarine community with similar but not identical structure to that present before the storm. Further, phytoplankton communities were initially displaced by the flood waters, which lowered biomass and productivity despite the high nutrient concentrations and dissolved inorganic nitrogen to phosphate ratios of ~ 16. We found for cyanobacteria, factors such as time (i.e., sampling event after the storm), temperature (°C), salinity, NH 4 + (μM), NO 3 − (μM), and turbidity (Secchi disk depths and total suspended solids) were the most critical environmental factors that explained the variation in community composition relative to the major eukaryotic groups. Only factors such as time, followed by salinity, and NO 3 − played a crucial role for eukaryotes, with time having the most impact on diatoms. The results herein provide a greater understanding of the succession and natural variability of phytoplankton species following large flood events in subtropical estuaries, which are predicted to occur more frequently with increasing effects of climate change.

Abstract:The ability of trees to suck water from roots to leaves, sometimes to heights of over a hundred meters, is remarkable given the absence of any mechanical pump. This study deals with a number of issues, of both an historical and conceptual nature, in the orthodox Cohesion Tension theory of the ascent of sap in trees. The theory relies chiefly on the exceptional cohesive and adhesive properties of water, the structural properties of trees, and the role of evaporation (transpiration) from leaves. But it is not the whole story. Plant scientists have been aware since the inception of the theory in the late 19th century that further processes are at work in order to prime the trees, the main such process (growth itself) being so obvious to them that it is often omitted from the story. Other factors depend largely on the type of tree, and are not always fully understood. For physicists, in particular, it may be helpful to see the fuller picture, which is what this study attempts to provide in nontechnical terms.

Mutually inclusive mechanisms of drought-induced tree mortality

Abstract:Unprecedented tree dieback across Central Europe caused by recent global change-type drought events highlights the need for a better mechanistic understanding of drought-induced tree mortality. Although numerous physiological risk factors have been identified, the importance of two principal mechanisms, hydraulic failure and carbon starvation, is still debated. It further remains largely unresolved how the local neighborhood composition affects individual mortality risk. We studied 9435 young trees of 12 temperate species planted in a diversity experiment in 2013 to assess how hydraulic traits, carbon dynamics, pest infestation, tree height and neighborhood competition influence individual mortality risk. Following the most extreme global change-type drought since record in 2018, one third of these trees died. Across species, hydraulic safety margins (HSMs) were negatively and a shift towards a higher sugar fraction in the non-structural carbohydrate (NSC) pool positively associated with mortality risk. Moreover, trees infested by bark beetles had a higher mortality risk, and taller trees a lower mortality risk. Most neighborhood interactions were beneficial, although neighborhood effects were highly species-specific. Species that suffered more from drought, especially Larix spp. and Betula spp., tended to increase the survival probability of their neighbors and vice versa. While severe tissue dehydration marks the final stage of drought-induced tree mortality, we show that hydraulic failure is interrelated with a series of other, mutually inclusive processes. These include shifts in NSC pools driven by osmotic adjustment and/or starch depletion as well as pest infestation and are modulated by the size and species identity of a tree and its neighbors. A more holistic view that accounts for multiple causes of drought-induced tree mortality is required to improve predictions of trends in global forest dynamics and to identify mutually beneficial species combinations.

Abstract:Extreme climatic events and related disturbances such as hurricanes are increasingly altering forest ecosystems. How these events impact forest fungal communities is poorly characterized. We examined the effect of a hurricane on mycorrhizal community structure and potential interspecific fungal interactions, inferred from OTU co-occurrences. We characterized the root fungal communities of dual-mycorrhizal plants from nine plots during two consecutive years after a category four hurricane impacted the coastal Mexican Pacific tropical forest in Jalisco. Presence-abundance matrices were used to calculate properties of mycorrhizal networks including nestedness and modularity, and to infer patterns of co-occurrence. One year after the hurricane there was a loss of links between plants and fungi. Increased network modularity and connectivity were observed after two years. We also found that disturbance changed arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal network structure more strongly than ectomycorrhizal fungal networks. Fungal guilds changed their putative interspecific interactions, from mutual exclusion in the first year to a significant increase in co-occurrence of plant pathogens, saprotrophs, and endophytes in the second year. Our results suggest that in the short term, rhizospheric interactions can be resilient to hurricanes, but fungal guilds may have divergent responses.

Abstract:Ongoing global climate change is predicted to increase the frequency and magnitude of extreme weather events, impacting population dynamics and community structure. There is, however, a critical lack of case studies considering how climatic perturbations affect biotic interactions. Here, we document how an obligate seed dispersal mutualism was disrupted by a temporally anomalous and meteorologically extreme interlude of unseasonably frigid weather, with accompanying snowstorms, in subtropical China, during January-February 2008. Based on the analysis of 5892 fecal samples (representing six mammalian seed dispersers), this event caused a substantial disruption to the relative seed dispersal function for the raisin tree Hovenia dulcis from prestorm 6.29 (2006) and 11.47 (2007), down to 0.35 during the storm (2008). Crucially, this was due to impacts on mammalian seed dispersers and not due to a paucity of fruit, where 4.63 fruit per branch were available in January 2008, vs. 3.73 in 2006 and 3.58 in 2007. An induced dietary shift occurred among omnivorous carnivores during this event, from the consumption fruit to small mammals and birds, reducing their role in seed dispersal substantially. Induced range shift extinguished the functionality of herbivorous mammals completely, however, seed dispersal function was compensated in part by three omnivorous carnivores during poststorm years, and thus while the mutualism remained intact it was enacted by a narrower assemblage of species, rendering the system more vulnerable to extrinsic perturbations. The storm's extended effects also had anthropogenic corollaries - migrating ungulates becoming exposed to heightened levels of illegal hunting - causing long-term modification to the seed dispersal community and mutualism dynamics. Furthermore, degraded forests proved especially vulnerable to the storm's effects. Considering increasing climate variability and anthropogenic disturbance, the impacts of such massive, aberrant events warrant conservation concern, while affording unique insights into the stability of mutualisms and the processes that structure biodiversity and mediate ecosystem dynamics.

Abstract:Interspecific variation in phenology is a key axis of functional diversity, potentially mediating how communities respond to climate change. The diverse drivers of phenology act across multiple temporal scales. For example, abiotic constraints favor synchronous reproduction (positive covariance among species), while biotic interactions can favor synchrony or compensatory dynamics (negative covariance). We used wavelet analyses to examine phenology of community flower and seed production for 45 tree species across multiple temporal scales in a tropical dry forest in Puerto Rico with marked rainfall seasonality. We asked three questions: (1) do species exhibit synchronous or compensatory temporal dynamics in reproduction, (2) do interspecific differences in phenology reflect variable responses to rainfall, and (3) is interspecific variation in phenology and response to a major drought associated with functional traits that mediate responses to moisture? Community-level flowering was synchronized at seasonal scales (~5–6 mo) and at short scales (~1 mo, following rainfall). However, seed rain exhibited significant compensatory dynamics at intraseasonal scales (~3 mo), suggesting interspecific variation in temporal niches. Species with large leaves (associated with sensitivity to water deficit) peaked in reproduction synchronously with the peak of seasonal rainfall (~5 mo scale). By contrast, species with high wood specific gravity (associated with drought resistance) tended to flower in drier periods. Flowering of tall species and those with large leaves was most tightly linked to intraseasonal (~2 mo scale) rainfall fluctuations. Although the 2015 drought dramatically reduced community-wide reproduction, functional traits were not associated with the magnitude of species-specific declines. Our results suggest opposing drivers of synchronous versus compensatory dynamics at different temporal scales. Phenology associations with functional traits indicated that distinct strategies for coping with seasonality underlie phenological diversity. Observed drought responses highlight the importance of non-linear community responses to climate. Community phenology exhibits scale-specific patterns highlighting the need for multi-scale approaches to community dynamics.

Abstract:As precipitation patterns are predicted to become more erratic, it's vital to understand how abrupt climate events will affect woody seedlings that develop different hydraulic strategies. We cultivated anisohydric Robinia pseudoacacia L. and isohydric Quercus acutissima Carr. in a greenhouse, and subjected an abrupt precipitation event during a successive drought. Patterns of leaf and root gas exchange, leaf and stem hydraulics, seedlings growth, and non-structural carbohydrate (NSC) patterns were determined.

Tree host–pathogen interactions as influenced by drought timing: linking physiological performance, biochemical defence and disease severity

Abstract:There is increasing concern about tree mortality around the world due to climatic extremes and associated shifts in pest and pathogen dynamics. Yet, empirical studies addressing the interactive effect of biotic and abiotic stress on plants are very rare. Therefore, in this study, we examined the interaction between drought stress and a canker pathogen, Quambalaria coyrecup, on the eucalypt – Corymbia calophylla (marri), which is experiencing increasing drought stress. We hypothesized that drought stress would increase marri's susceptibility to canker disease, and cankers would have the largest negative effect on plants that are already drought stressed before pathogen inoculation. To test the hypotheses, in a glasshouse, marri saplings were exposed to drought either before or after pathogen inoculation, or were well-watered or droughted throughout the experiment either with or without inoculation. Canker development was greater in well-watered saplings than in droughted saplings, with the fastest development occurring in well-watered saplings that had experienced drought stress before inoculation. Irrespective of water treatments, marri saplings employed phenol-based localized biochemical defence against the pathogen. Drought reduced photosynthesis and growth, however, a negative effect of canker disease on saplings' physiological performance was only observed in well-watered saplings. In well-watered saplings, canker-induced loss of sapwood function contributed to reduced whole-plant hydraulic conductance, photosynthesis and growth. The results provide evidence that timing of drought stress influences host physiology, and host condition influences canker disease susceptibility through differences in induced biochemical defence mechanisms. The observations highlight the importance of explicitly incorporating abiotic and biotic stress, as well as their interactions, in future studies of tree mortality in drought-prone regions worldwide.

Hurricanes temporarily weaken human-ecosystem linkages in estuaries

Abstract:Intense disturbances such as hurricanes may drastically affect ecosystems, producing both acute and long-term changes along coastlines. By disrupting human activities (e.g., fishing), hurricanes can provide an opportunity to quantify the effects of these activities on coastal ecosystems. We performed predator-exclusion experiments on oyster reefs in 2016, one-year before a category-4 hurricane ("Harvey") and again in 2018 one-year post-hurricane where the storm made landfall. Additionally, we examined 8 years (2011-2018) of fisheries-independent data to gauge how fishing pressure and fish populations were affected by the storm in three locations that varied in storm impacts. In the month following Hurricane Harvey, fishing effort dropped by 90% in the area with wind and flooding damage, and predatory fish species commonly targeted by anglers were 300% more abundant than the year prior to the hurricane. The locations without damage to fishing infrastructure did not experience declines in fishing pressure or changes in fish abundance, regardless of flooding disturbance. Reef fish and invertebrate communities directly affected by the storm were significantly different after the hurricane and were ~ 30% more diverse. With low fishing pressure, sportfish CPUE were 1.7-6.9 × higher immediately after the hurricane. Intermediate consumers, such as crabs that prey on oysters, were 45% less abundant and 10% smaller. These results indicate that hurricanes can temporarily disrupt human-ecosystem linkages and reconstitute top-down control by sportfish in estuarine food webs. Disturbance events that interrupt or weaken those interactions may yield indirect ecological benefits and provide insights into the effects of human activities on food webs.
Residual water losses mediate the trade-off between growth and drought-survival across saplings of 12 tropical rainforest tree species with contrasting hydraulic strategies

Abstract:Knowledge of the physiological mechanisms underlying species vulnerability to drought is critical to better understand patterns of tree mortality. Investigating plant adaptive strategies to drought should thus help to fill this knowledge gap, especially in tropical rainforests exhibiting high functional diversity. In a semi-controlled drought experiment on 12 rainforest tree species, we investigated the diversity in hydraulic strategies and whether they determined the ability of saplings to use stored non-structural carbohydrates during an extreme imposed drought. We further explored the importance of water- and carbon-use strategies in relation to drought-survival through a modelling approach. Hydraulic strategies varied considerably across species with a continuum between dehydration- tolerance and -avoidance. During dehydration leading to hydraulic failure and irrespective of hydraulic strategies, species showed strong declines in whole-plant starch concentrations and a maintenance or even an increase in soluble sugar concentrations potentially favouring osmotic adjustments. Residual water losses mediated the trade-off between time to hydraulic failure and growth, suggesting that it is linked to the 'fast-slow' continuum of plant performances and that dehydration avoidance is an effective drought-survival strategy at the sapling stage. Further investigations on residual water losses may be key to understanding the response of tropical rainforest tree communities to climate change.

Multiscale predictors of small tree survival across a heterogeneous tropical landscape

Abstract:Uncertainties about controls on tree mortality make forest responses to land-use and climate change difficult to predict. We tracked biomass of tree functional groups in tropical forest inventories across Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, and with random forests we ranked 86 potential predictors of small tree survival (young or mature stems 2.5-12.6 cm diameter at breast height). Forests span dry to cloud forests, range in age, geology and past land use and experienced severe drought and storms. When excluding species as a predictor, top predictors are tree crown ratio and height, two to three species traits and stand to regional factors reflecting local disturbance and the system state (widespread recovery, drought, hurricanes). Native species, and species with denser wood, taller maximum height, or medium typical height survive longer, but short trees and species survive hurricanes better. Trees survive longer in older stands and with less disturbed canopies, harsher geoclimates (dry, edaphically dry, e.g., serpentine substrates, and highest-elevation cloud forest), or in intervals removed from hurricanes. Satellite image phenology and bands, even from past decades, are top predictors, being sensitive to vegetation type and disturbance. Covariation between stand-level species traits and geoclimate, disturbance and neighboring species types may explain why most neighbor variables, including introduced vs. native species, had low or no importance, despite univariate correlations with survival. As forests recovered from a hurricane in 1998 and earlier deforestation, small trees of introduced species, which on average have lighter wood, died at twice the rate of natives. After hurricanes in 2017, the total biomass of trees ≥12.7 cm dbh of the introduced species Spathodea campanulata spiked, suggesting that more frequent hurricanes might perpetuate this light-wooded species commonness. If hurricane recovery favors light-wooded species while drought favors others, climate change influences on forest composition and ecosystem services may depend on the frequency and severity of extreme climate events.

Tree species composition is known to influence forest productivity, but its effect on forest resilience to disturbances such as storms remains largely unexplored. Furthermore, climate is likely to influence forest resilience directly but also to influence the effect of tree species composition on resilience. In Europe, storm‐induced tree mortality is currently increasing across all climatic biomes. Understanding the drivers of forest resilience to storms and its consistency across climates appears to be crucial for predicting the consequences of climate change for European forests. In this study, we used a simulation approach with an integral projection model calibrated with National Forest Inventory (NFI) data at the European scale. We restricted our simulations to tree species assemblages observed in the NFI data, covering a species diversity gradient nested within a climate gradient. We quantified functional diversity and the mean position of each species assemblage at equilibrium on two functional axis: (i) conservative versus fast growing and (ii) low versus high recruitment. We disturbed each species assemblage from equilibrium using species‐specific storm disturbance mortality probabilities and quantified the assemblages' resistance (inverse of immediate basal area loss), recovery (slope of post‐disturbance increase in basal area) and resilience (inverse of the cumulative deviation of basal area from the undisturbed state). We found that on average, species‐rich assemblages had higher recovery and resilience to storm disturbance, while functional diversity improved resistance and recovery. When analysing how this effect varied with climate, we found that diversity significantly increased resistance and resilience in the climatic margins only. Finally, we found that storm resilience was also driven by species mean position along both functional axes. In particular, the conservative‐productive axis had an effect two to three times greater than diversity: forests dominated by conservative species were more resistant and resilient, but had lower recovery than species assemblages dominated by fast‐growing species. Taken together, these results show that climate and tree species composition interact to control the ability of forests to resist and recover from a storm disturbance through both direct and indirect effects. Abstract:Disturbance is a well known modifier of landscapes. In marine systems hurricanes may not only remove or bury subtidal seagrasses but they may also impact the seed banks of these taxa. We ask whether seagrass landscape pattern and seed dispersal are influenced by physical disturbance in a subtropical deep water setting. We examined the spatial dynamics of an offshore landscape composed of the seagrass, Halophila decipiens in summer 1999 and again in 2000 after the passage of a hurricane. A towed video camera was used to collect data within a 1 km2 area and construct benthic maps of seagrass, macroalgae, hard bottom outcrops, and sediments from over 20,000 video frames. The appearance of sand and seagrass at a portion of the site in summer 2000 that was previously hard substrate verified sediment and seed movement. Although seeds released by this seagrass are deposited into sediments near parent plants, movement en masse of the seagrass seed reservoir appears to be an important component of dispersal. The generation of new landscape patches when disturbance is large and intense suggests that large-scale disturbance, resulting in the local redistribution of sediment and the seed bank, appears to mold the spatial signature of the resulting seagrass landscape in a MidShelf area. This impact of physical disturbance differs from that previously reported for factors influencing spatial arrangements of seagrass in shallow waters but has some features similar to those of large infrequent disturbances studied in terrestrial settings.
