Abstract:Tropical cyclones (TCs) are among the most destructive natural hazards on Earth. The ocean can have dramatic responses to TCs and further imposes significant feedbacks to the atmosphere. A comprehensive understanding of the ocean-TC interaction is a challenging hindrance for improving the simulation and prediction of TCs and therefore avoidance of human and economic losses. A special section of JGR-Oceans was thus organized, in order to have a broad summary of latest progress in ocean-TC interactions. This introduction presents a brief overview of the contributions found in this collection. We hope it can also shed light on recent advance and future challenges in the studies on the oceanic responses and feedbacks to TCs.

Abstract:A presumed impact of global climate change is the increase in frequency and intensity of tropical cyclones. Due to the possible destruction that occurs when tropical cyclones make landfall, understanding their formation should be of mass interest. In 2017, Kerry Emanuel modeled tropical cyclone formation by developing a low-dimensional dynamical system which couples tangential wind speed of the eye-wall with the inner-core moisture. For physically relevant parameters, this dynamical system always contains three fixed points: a stable fixed point at the origin corresponding to a non-storm state, an additional asymptotically stable fixed point corresponding to a stable storm state, and a saddle corresponding to an unstable storm state. The goal of this work is to provide insight into the underlying mechanisms that govern the formation and suppression of tropical cyclones through both analytical arguments and numerical experiments. We present a case study of both rate and noise-induced tipping between the stable states, relating to the destabilization or formation of a tropical cyclone. While the stochastic system exhibits transitions both to and from the non-storm state, noise-induced tipping is more likely to form a storm, whereas rate-induced tipping is more likely to be the way a storm is destabilized, and in fact, rate-induced tipping can never lead to the formation of a storm when acting alone. For rate-induced tipping acting as a destabilizer of the storm, a striking result is that both wind shear and maximal potential velocity have to increase, at a substantial rate, in order to effect tipping away from the active hurricane state. For storm formation through noise-induced tipping, we identify a specific direction along which the non-storm state is most likely to get activated.

Unveiling the global influence of tropical cyclones on extreme waves approaching coastal areas

Abstract:Abstract Tropical and extra-tropical storms generate extreme waves, impacting both nearby and remote regions through swell propagation. Despite their devastating effects in tropical areas, the contribution of tropical cyclones (TCs) to global wave-induced coastal risk remains unknown. Here, we enable a quantitative assessment of TC’s role in extreme waves approaching global coastlines, by designing twin oceanic wave simulations with and without realistic TC wind forcing. We find that TCs substantially contribute to extreme breaking heights in tropical regions (35-50% on average), reaching 100% in high-density TC areas like the North Pacific. TCs also impact remote TC-free regions, such as the equatorial Pacific experiencing in average 30% of its extreme wave events due to TCs. Interannual variability amplifies TC-induced wave hazards, notably during El Niño in the Central Pacific, and La Niña in the South China Sea, Caribbean Arc, and South Indian Ocean coastlines. This research offers critical insights for global risk management and preparedness.

Spatially and Temporally Variable Impacts of Hurricanes on Shallow Sediment Structure

Abstract:Sediment dynamics are fundamental to understanding coastal resiliency to climate change in the coming decades. Tropical cyclones can radically alter shallow sediment properties; however, the uncertain and destructive nature of tropical cyclones make understanding and predicting their impacts on sediments challenging. Here, grain size sampling in conjunction with continuous hydrodynamic data provided an unprecedented perspective of the impacts of two tropical cyclones, including Hurricane Sally (2020), in which the inner core of the storm passed directly over the field sites, on shallow coastal sediments in Alabama (USA). Sampling directly before and after Sally as well as out to ∼7 months after the second storm event, Hurricane Zeta, showed that the changes in sediments following storm events exhibited notable site‐to‐site variability. This variability during the first storm event was consistent with low sand supply and flow interactions driven by local bathymetry that led to sand transport and deposition at some previously‐muddy sites, near‐surface mud loss at some sandy sites, or little change at others. Post‐Sally impacts to grain size were well preserved 8 months after the storm, despite passage of Zeta as well as seasonal winds and riverine inputs during winter and spring. Overall, high temporal‐resolution sampling over a relatively large area (<500 km2) revealed relatively small‐scale spatial variability (on the order of 5–10 km) of hurricane impacts to sediment structure. These observations demonstrate a critical limitation for accurately predicting changes to coastal sediment dynamics in the face of a changing climate and its impact on tropical cyclones.

Abstract:Tropical cyclones (TCs) (hurricanes, typhoons, and cyclones) are considered the natural hazard with the greatest potential for loss of life and destruction of property, for several reasons. First, TCs occur with greater frequency than many other destructive natural hazards, such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. This frequency, we are learning, depends on trends in ocean sea-surface temperatures (SSTs) (which can be monitored using the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) and the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO)) combined with other climatic factors, such as the presence/absence of El Niño and the extensiveness of easterly wave activity. Second, TCs disburse large amounts of energy, acting as a siphon and absorbing energy from the oceans and subsequently releasing it back to the atmosphere. Higher SSTs equate to greater amounts of latent heat and greater amounts of energy released during condensation during a tropical cyclone. Third, tropical cyclones are spatially extensive, from the eye wall of cumulonimbus clouds characterized by sustained and very damaging winds that can move in excess of 250 km/h (180 mph) to the spiral bands that can extend out hundreds of kilometers and capable of producing flooding rainfall. Fourth, tropical cyclones affect sub-tropical and extra-tropical locations, such as Southeastern Asia, where infrastructure is poor and there is very limited ability to provide early warnings or to evacuate human populations that often number in the millions.
Progress and Perspective on Interactions Between Ocean and Typhoon

Abstract:Typhoon is one of the most destructive natural disasters on the earth. A lot of fruitful research has been conducted, especially from the perspective of atmospheric sciences. During a typhoon, the ocean also undergoes dramatic variabilities, which can have significant feedbacks to the atmosphere and typhoon. Generally, the sea surface temperatures (SST) decrease and inertial oscillations are greatly enhanced. The fingerprints of typhoon on the ocean are not constrained to the local sea surface, but can be extended to the ocean interior and remote areas, which play an important role in the climate change on a much longer and larger spatiotemporal scales. In addition, the mesoscale eddy accounts for a large amount of kinetic energy in the ocean. Much progress has been achieved on the responses and feedbacks of ocean eddy to typhoon, but it remains a large uncertainty for the ocean-typhoon interaction. Particularly, the three-dimensional structure of ocean eddy during typhoon is unclear due to the lack of observations. Overall, so far, there have been no comprehensive understandings of the ocean-typhoon interactions, which are believed to be a bottleneck for improving the typhoon prediction. Therefore, the mechanisms of ocean-typhoon interactions at various spatiotemporal scales, as well as their contributions to the short-term and long-term typhoon forecast, have become a hot and challenging topic for both the oceanic and the atmospheric sciences. In this paper, recent progress in the ocean-typhoon interactions is reviewed, based on several collaborative projects in China. The foci are on the local responses and feedbacks between mesoscale variabilities in the upper ocean and typhoon, the ocean-typhoon interactions at low frequency and the impacts on global climate, data assimilation during typhoon, and typhoon forecast in the ocean-atmosphere coupled framework. The major challenge to the ocean-typhoon interactions resides in the lack of persistent and reliable observations, especially the synchronized observations in both the ocean and the atmosphere. Some valuable experiments have been conducted recently and are summarized in this study. For example, mooring/buoy arrays are carefully designed and deployed in the northern South China Sea consecutively from 2014 up to now. The monitoring for a long period accumulates very useful in-situ data for the study on the ocean-typhoon interactions. In addition, several novel technics are also proposed and tested recently, such as the one using rocket-deployed dropsondes to obtain vertical profiles in the atmosphere within a typhoon, and the Iridium Argo the sampling frequency of which can be remotely and manually increased when a typhoon is coming. On the mechanisms of ocean-typhoon interaction, a hypothesis of cold suction in the ocean is proposed and examined, which is another avenue for the typhoons impacts on the subsurface in the ocean, except for the traditional concept of heat pump. Evidence for cold suction is found in in-situ observations. The new concept makes the theory for ocean-typhoon interactions more comprehensive. For the practical application, the improvement of typhoon prediction is the golden goal. A lot of efforts have been put into the data assimilation, which synthesizes data from different resources, such as the remote sensing data of the sea surface properties and the Argo data for the ocean interior. Improved data assimilation methods are proposed to facilitate the extreme conditions during typhoon. Until now, most operational typhoon forecast still rely on the atmosphere-only model. Nevertheless, the atmosphere-ocean-wave coupled systems have been established and evaluated. Some improvement has been shown for the operational typhoon forecast. Finally, some key scientific problems and technical challenges are raised in this paper, which are expected to shed light on the future studies on the ocean-typhoon interaction.

Abstract:Abstract Tropical cyclones play an increasingly important role in shaping ecosystems. Understanding and generalizing their responses is challenging because of meteorological variability among storms and its interaction with ecosystems. We present a research framework designed to compare tropical cyclone effects within and across ecosystems that: a) uses a disaggregating approach that measures the responses of individual ecosystem components, b) links the response of ecosystem components at fine temporal scales to meteorology and antecedent conditions, and c) examines responses of ecosystem using a resistance–resilience perspective by quantifying the magnitude of change and recovery time. We demonstrate the utility of the framework using three examples of ecosystem response: gross primary productivity, stream biogeochemical export, and organismal abundances. Finally, we present the case for a network of sentinel sites with consistent monitoring to measure and compare ecosystem responses to cyclones across the United States, which could help improve coastal ecosystem resilience.

Abstract:Coastal ocean flows are interconnected by a complex suite of processes. Examples are inlet jets, river mouth effluents, ocean currents, surface gravity waves, internal waves, wave overtopping, and wave slamming on coastal structures. It has become necessary to simulate such oceanographic phenomena directly and simultaneously in many disciplines, including coastal engineering, environmental science, and marine science. Oceanographic processes exhibit distinct behaviors at specific temporal and spatial scales, and they are multiscale, multiphysics in nature; these processes are described by different sets of governing equations and are often modeled individually. In order to draw the attention of the scientific community and promote their simulations, a Special Issue of the Journal of Marine Science and Engineering entitled “Multiscale, Multiphysics Modelling of Coastal Ocean Processes: Paradigms and Approaches” was published. The papers collected in this issue cover physical phenomena, such as wind-driven flows, coastal flooding, turbidity currents, and modeling techniques such as model comparison, model coupling, parallel computation, and domain decomposition. This article outlines the needs for modeling of coastal ocean flows involving multiple physical processes at different scales, and it discusses the implications of the collected papers. Additionally, it reviews the current status and offers a roadmap with numerical methods, data collection, and artificial intelligence as future endeavors.

Abstract:Hurricanes influence the local rates of air‐sea CO2 exchange. Changes in fCO2w, the fugacity of CO2 in bulk water, result from storm‐induced sea surface temperature (SST) changes and from upwelling. Using numerical studies and comparing recent formulations for the gas transfer velocity kL, we discuss the impact of Hurricane Gustav (2002) on fCO2w and air‐sea CO2 exchange. We show that Gustav resulted in enhanced CO2 flux, with the maximum occurring at the storm's peak intensity.
Impact of CO2-Induced Warming on Hurricane Intensities As Simulated in a Hurricane Model with Ocean Coupling

Abstract:This study explores how a carbon dioxide (CO2) warming-induced enhancement of hurricane intensity could be altered by the inclusion of hurricane-ocean coupling. Simulations are performed using a coupled version of the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory hurricane prediction system in an idealized setting with highly simplified background flow fields. The large-scale atmospheric boundary conditions for these high-resolution experiments (atmospheric temperature and moisture profiles and SSTs) are derived from control and high-CO2 climatologies obtained from a low-resolution (R30) global coupled ocean-atmosphere climate model. The high-CO2 conditions are obtained from years 71-120 of a transient +1% yr(-1) CO2-increase experiment with the global model. The CO2-induced SST changes from the global climate model range from +2.2 degrees to +2.7 degreesC in the six tropical storm basins studied. In the storm simulations, ocean coupling significantly reduces the intensity of simulated tropical cyclones, in accord with previous studies. However, the net impact of ocean coupling on the simulated CO2 warming-induced intensification of tropical cyclones is relatively minor. For both coupled and uncoupled simulations, the percentage increase in maximum surface wind speeds averages about 5%-6% over the six basins and varies from about 3% to 10% across the different basins. Both coupled and uncoupled simulations also show strong increases of near-storm precipitation under high-CO2 climate conditions, relative to control (present day) conditions.
A Study on Key Determinants in Enhancing Storm Surges Along the Coast: Interplay Between Tropical Cyclone Motion and Coastal Geometry

Abstract:Abstract Generalizing the relationship between cyclonic features and storm surges remains challenging because previous studies have produced diverse results for different regions and historical events. We implemented Delft3D‐FM simulations and examined the synthetic effects of translation speed V t and landfall angle α on maximum surge height (MSH) along an open coast and bay. By simulating idealized cases with varying V t and α , we found that fast translation of a tropical cyclone (TC) magnified the MSH, with the most extreme MSH occurring when the landfall angle was almost perpendicular to the coastline. In addition, the simultaneous presence of smaller α and slower V t conditions for a TC can trigger coastally trapped waves arriving ahead of its landfall. The impacts of the Proudman and Greenspan resonances contribute substantially to the MSH, depending on the conditions of the TCs and their topographies. We quantitatively assessed the effect of coastline geometry, and the results revealed that the morphological ratio influenced the MSH. Our findings suggest that the synthetic effects of cyclonic and topographic factors are critical for generating resonance and trapped waves that can modify main surges. The application of our findings from idealized cases to realistic cases based on historical TC indicates their applicability to storm surge risk assessment. Finally, we conducted a factor‐based diagnosis for the rapid evaluation of MSH, which can provide insightful references for future storm surge mitigation.

Numerical modeling of the impact of hurricanes on ocean dynamics: sensitivity of the Gulf Stream response to storm’s track

Abstract:The study is focused on the disruption that a storm can cause to ocean stratification and ocean currents in a region dominated by a western boundary current and meso-scale variability. Sensitivity experiments with a regional numerical ocean model of the US East Coast are used to simulate different hurricane tracks to study the impact on the Gulf Stream (GS) flow, surrounding waters and coastal sea level. Realistic simulations of Hurricane Matthew (October 2016) using surface wind and heat flux from NOAA's operational coupled forecast system were compared with idealized artificial hurricanes with tracks located at different distances from the coast (~ 200–600 km). Despite the limitation of representing realistic wind patterns by an analytical formula, coastal storm surge near the hurricane was simulated quite well. The height of the coastal storm surge was found to be very sensitive to the location of the hurricane track relative to the coast, but the impact of the hurricane on the GS flow was found to be less sensitive to the exact hurricane track, though the maximum influence was when the hurricane track passed ~ 100 km east of the GS with winds over the GS opposing the current direction. Hurricanes that passed within hundreds of kilometers from the GS caused disruption in the GS dynamics and weakening in the downstream flow of the GS that can last for many days after the storm disappeared. This indirect impact of hurricanes on the GS can elevate sea level along long stretches of the coast. The impact of a hurricane on a region dominated by meso-scale variability is complex, creating unpredictable spatial changes in temperatures and currents. After the hurricane disappeared and without additional surface heating, it may take the stratification as much as 2 months to recover to pre-hurricane conditions by advection alone. This lasting impact of a storm on ocean dynamics is consistent with observations that show minor tidal coastal flooding that lasts for days after hurricanes passed offshore.

Abstract:Marine ecosystems face numerous challenges from natural and anthropogenic sources. For example, excessive rainfall from storms rapidly lowers salinity, which can destroy coastal foundation species and their associated fauna [1], while fishing can alter coastal food webs, reduce biodiversity, and lower ecosystem resilience [2]. Concurrently, mass disruptions to fishing activity are common following disasters such as hurricanes, oil spills, and tsunamis, which may lead to increased populations of harvested species [3]. However, our understanding of how these disturbances interact to affect communities remains limited. We examined effects on estuarine communities following fishing disruptions and salinity changes caused by a tropical cyclone. Our results indicate that recreational fishing had large effects on fish populations that cascaded down the food web. Further, although destructive, hurricanes and other disturbances that simultaneously curtail human activities may promote recovery. VIDEO ABSTRACT.
On the Role of Sea Surface Temperature in the Clustering of Global Tropical Cyclone Formation

Abstract:This study examines the potential impacts of large-scale atmospheric circulations that are forced by zonal sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies on global tropical cyclone (TC) formation. Using the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL) AM4 model under different SST distributions, it is found that the east-west clustering of global TC formation is mainly governed by large-scale circulations in response to a given SST distribution, instead of direct ocean surface fluxes associated with zonal SST anomalies. Our zonally homogeneous SST simulations in the presence of realistic surface coverage show that TC clusters still emerge as a result of the breakdown of zonal circulations related to land-sea distribution, which produce specific "hot spots" for global TC formation. Sensitivity experiments with different climate warming scenarios and model physics confirm the persistence of these TC clusters in the absence of all zonal SST variations. These robust results offer new insights into the effects of large-scale circulation and terrain forcing on TC clusters beyond the traditional view of direct SST impacts, which are based on the direct alignment of the warmest SST regions and TC clusters. In addition, our experiments also capture internal variability of the global TC frequency, with an average fluctuation of 6-8 TCs at several dominant frequencies of ~3, 6, and 9 years, even in the absence of all SST interannual variability and ocean coupling. This finding reveals an intrinsic "noise" level of the global TC frequency that one has to take into account when examining the past and future trends in TC activity and their related significance or detectability.

Response of a Phytoplankton Community in a Subtropical Estuary to a Pulse Disturbance Driven by a Combo Hurricane and Extreme Rainfall Event

Abstract:Major precipitation events from destructive hurricanes can change the hydrodynamics of estuaries. Indeed, water rather than wind was the major destructive force behind Hurricane Harvey, the category 4 storm that stalled over Texas in August 2017. Herein, we present a unique examination of the phytoplankton community as it responded to the changing hydrodynamic conditions in Galveston Bay. We used traditional (primary productivity, pigments, Fluorescence Induction and Relaxation System, pulse-amplitude modulation fluorometer), and modern (Imagining FlowCytobot [IFCB], 16S rRNA, and 18S rRNA gene sequencing) approaches to characterize the phytoplankton community and their physiological response. Phytoplankton communities transitioned from pre-storm estuarine to freshwater species and then began to transition back to an estuarine community with similar but not identical structure to that present before the storm. Further, phytoplankton communities were initially displaced by the flood waters, which lowered biomass and productivity despite the high nutrient concentrations and dissolved inorganic nitrogen to phosphate ratios of ~ 16. We found for cyanobacteria, factors such as time (i.e., sampling event after the storm), temperature (°C), salinity, NH 4 + (μM), NO 3 − (μM), and turbidity (Secchi disk depths and total suspended solids) were the most critical environmental factors that explained the variation in community composition relative to the major eukaryotic groups. Only factors such as time, followed by salinity, and NO 3 − played a crucial role for eukaryotes, with time having the most impact on diatoms. The results herein provide a greater understanding of the succession and natural variability of phytoplankton species following large flood events in subtropical estuaries, which are predicted to occur more frequently with increasing effects of climate change.

Abstract:In shallow, microtidal coastal regions storms play a significant role in influencing wave climate and circulation patterns. In the northern Gulf of Mexico, understanding the effects of tropical cyclones on hydrodynamic processes is crucial for making predictions in the face of rapid wetland loss and increasing human interventions via restoration and protection strategies, such as river diversions. In this study, two bottom-mounted upward-facing Acoustic Current Doppler Profilers and separate wave recorders were installed in Barataria Bay (Louisiana, USA) to measure waves and current velocities responding to the passage of multiple tropical cyclones in fall 2020 and summer 2021. Analyses of depth-averaged current velocities suggest diurnal astronomic constituents drive currents over a 6-8 day period during and after storms, despite the microtidal nature of the bay. Wind-driven flow reversals of subtidal surface currents were observed during surge events. Storms that made landfall to the west of the bay resulted in enhanced subtidal current velocity magnitude during pre-and post-landfall periods while the one storm that made landfall to the east of the bay showed substantially less subtidal current response. Wave heights during storms are well reproduced by a semi-empirical model based on wind speed, fetch, and water depth, indicating that waves are locally generated. Tropical cyclones significantly influenced sub-tidal current velocities, depending on storm track and time of impact relative to the tidal cycle.

Abstract:Abstract Tropical cyclones (TCs) are known to trigger chlorophyll bloom and boost local primary productivity. The characteristics of ocean ecological responses to TCs and their feedback on physical fields in the northeastern Pacific are investigated using a coupled ocean general circulation model‐ocean ecosystem model. A case study is carried out on Hurricane Fernanda (2017), which formed in the northeastern tropical Pacific. TC‐induced mixing and upwelling act to transport subsurface cold and nutrient‐rich waters into the mixed layer, leading to surface cooling and chlorophyll (CHL) bloom. The phytoplankton budget analyses indicate that the CHL bloom is dominated by small phytoplankton ( P S ) growth term, which is modulated by biological consumption terms (i.e., small zooplankton grazing and P S mortality) and physical processes‐related terms (i.e., advection and vertical mixing); biological consumption terms and physical processes tend to mainly offset the contributions from the P S growth term. Furthermore, CHL is found to exert feedback on physical fields. The CHL bloom mainly contributes to a decrease in surface temperature, thereby enhancing the temperature structure induced physically by TCs. This biofeedback on physical fields involves two mechanisms: a direct heating (OBH) due to ocean biology‐induced effect, and an indirect cooling effect due to dynamic processes associated with vertical mixing and advection. In particular, the CHL bloom‐induced sea surface temperature cooling is dominated by vertical mixing and modulated by the OBH effect and advection. These findings offer novel perspectives on TC‐induced ecological responses, as well as the related mechanisms for biofeedback on physical fields.
