Abstract:Climate change is threatening coral reefs by making oceans warmer and more acidic, which weakens corals and intensifies hurricanes. These storms alter ocean currents, affecting how coral larvae and diseases spread. By modeling Hurricane Irma's impact in 2017, we found it increased long‐distance coral larval exchanges but reduced overall larval supply. This created new connections, potentially not only aiding coral resilience but also speeding up the spread of coral diseases by a month. As hurricanes grow stronger, their dual effects will intensify, causing more variability in coral ecosystems and faster changes in their health and composition. Climate change poses an existential threat to coral reefs. A warmer and more acidic ocean weakens coral ecosystems and increases the intensity of hurricanes. The wind–wave–current interactions during a hurricane deeply change the ocean circulation patterns and hence potentially affect the dispersal of coral larvae and coral disease agents. Here, we modeled the impact of major hurricane Irma (September 2017) on coral larval and stony coral tissue loss disease (SCTLD) connectivity in Florida's Coral Reef. We coupled high‐resolution coastal ocean circulation and wave models to simulate the dispersal of virtual coral larvae and disease agents between thousands of reefs. While being a brief event, our results suggest the passage of hurricane Irma strongly increased the probability of long‐distance exchanges while reducing larval supply. It created new connections that could promote coral resilience but also probably accelerated the spread of SCTLD by about a month. As they become more intense, hurricanes' double‐edged effect will become increasingly pronounced, contributing to increased variability in transport patterns and an accelerated rate of change within coral reef ecosystems.

Abstract:Hurricanes are catastrophically destructive. Beyond their toll on human life and livelihoods, hurricanes have tremendous and often long-lasting effects on ecological systems1,2. Despite many examples of mass mortality events following hurricanes3–5, hurricane-induced natural selection has not previously been demonstrated. Immediately after we finished a survey of Anolis scriptus—a common, small-bodied lizard found throughout the Turks and Caicos archipelago—our study populations were battered by Hurricanes Irma and Maria. Shortly thereafter, we revisited the populations to determine whether morphological traits related to clinging capacity had shifted in the intervening six weeks and found that populations of surviving lizards differed in body size, relative limb length and toepad size from those present before the storm. Our serendipitous study, which to our knowledge is the first to use an immediately before and after comparison6 to investigate selection caused by hurricanes, demonstrates that hurricanes can induce phenotypic change in a population and strongly implicates natural selection as the cause. In the decades ahead, as extreme climate events are predicted to become more intense and prevalent7,8, our understanding of evolutionary dynamics needs to incorporate the effects of these potentially severe selective episodes9–11.

Climate mod -els predict increases in the frequency of intense hurricanes, but no study has measured their impact on individual life courses within animal populations.2. We used 45 years of demographic data of rhesus macaques to quantify the influ- ence of major hurricanes on reproductive life courses using multiple metrics of dynamic heterogeneity accounting for life course variability and life-history trait variances.3. To reduce intraspecific competition, individuals may explore new reproductive stages during years of major hurricanes, resulting in higher temporal variation in reproductive trajectories. Alternatively, individuals may opt for a single optimal life-history strategy due to trade- offs between survival and reproduction.4. Our results show that heterogeneity in reproductive life courses increased by 4% during years of major hurricanes, despite a 2% reduction in the asymptotic growth rate due to an average decrease in mean fertility and survival by that is, shortened life courses and reduced reproductive output. In agreement with this, the population is expected to achieve stable population dynamics faster after being perturbed by a hurricane (p = 1.512 ; 95% CI: 1.488, 1.538), relative to ordi- nary years (p = 1.482; 1.475, 1.490).5. Our work suggests that natural disasters force individuals into new demographic roles to potentially reduce competition during unfavourable environments where mean reproduction and survival are compromised. Variance in lifetime reproduc- tive success and longevity are differently affected by hurricanes, and such vari- ability is mostly driven by survival.

Stronger Hurricanes and Climate Change in the Caribbean Sea: Threats to the Sustainability of Endangered Coral Species

Abstract:An increasing sea surface temperature as a result of climate change has led to a higher frequency and strengthening of hurricanes across the northeastern Caribbean in recent decades, with increasing risks of impacts to endangered corals and to the sustainability of coral reefs. Category five Hurricanes Irma and María during 2017 caused unprecedented damage to coral reef ecosystems across northeastern Puerto Rico, including mechanical destruction, localized sediment bedload (horizontal sediment transport and abrasion), and burial by hurricane-generated rubble fields. Hurricanes inflicted significant site-, depth-, and life history trait-specific impacts to endangered corals, with substantial and widespread mechanical damage to branching species, moderate mechanical damage to foliose species, and moderate to high localized damage to small-sized encrusting and massive morphotypes due to sediment bedload and burial by rubble. There was a mean 35% decline in Acropora palmata live cover, 79% in A. cervicornis, 12% in Orbicella annularis, 7% in O. faveolata, 12% in O. franksi, and 96% in Dendrogyra cylindrus. Hurricane disturbances resulted in a major regime shift favoring dominance by macroalgae, algal turf, and cyanobacteria. Recovery from coral recruitment or fragment reattachment in A. palmata was significantly higher on more distant coral reefs, but there was none for massive endangered species. Stronger hurricanes under projected climate change may represent a major threat to the conservation of endangered coral species and reef sustainability which will require enhancing coral propagation and restoration strategies, and the integration of adaptive, ecosystem-based management approaches. Recommendations are discussed to enhance redundancy, rapid restoration responses, and conservation-oriented strategies.

Abstract:<p>If combined with anthropogenic disturbances and global climatic change, hurricanes may lead to major effects on animal populations and assemblages. The combined effects of cumulative natural and human disturbances on vertebrates have been little studied. There is evidence that herpetofaunal assemblages are sensitive in species richness, abundance, and diversity to anthropogenic and natural disturbances, or to their interaction. In the Pacific coast of Jalisco, Mexico, we aimed to evaluate the cumulative effects of hurricanes Jova (2011) and Patricia (2015) on herpetofaunal assemblages along tropical dry forest successional stages by comparing before and after the hurricanes. We conducted a long-term survey (2009 to 2018) on anuran, lizard and snake populations within five dry forest successional stages (from 0 to > 50 years after forest clearance), including the following: active pastures, early forests, young forests, intermediate forests, and old-growth forests as experimental controls. We hypothesized that cumulative effects of hurricanes will result in a general pattern of a decrease in abundance, richness and diversity, and an increase in evenness of anurans, lizards and snakes. We also expected that herpetofaunal diversity will decrease and evenness will increase in those stages with higher vegetation complexity, such as old-growth forest (OGF), and an increase in similarity and evenness in herpetofaunal assemblages in all successional stages. Overall, the abundance of anurans, lizards and snakes significantly decreased after hurricanes, but only for lizards and anurans the interaction of successional stage-hurricane was significant. Furthermore, species richness and diversity increased for lizards and decreased for snakes after hurricanes landed. Although, the pattern of anuran species richness among successional stages was similar after hurricanes, the richness in OGF markedly diminished after hurricanes.</p><p>Interestingly our results showed that tropical dry secondary forests, under the impact of low intensity hurricanes, might function as buffers that promote herpetofauna resilience. However, cumulative effects of hurricanes resulted in a homogenization tendency among successional stages, suggesting a negative effect for ecosystem functioning. The changes in the buffering role of secondary forests highlights the importance of these ecosystems for conserving biodiversity in times when hurricane disturbances are increasing in frequency and intensity. Overall, we discuss how the complex interactions between human and natural disturbances such as hurricanes might be a factor that contributes to maintain biotic diversity in anthropic landscapes of tropical dry forests.</p>

Abstract:Global change is altering interactions between ecological disturbances. We review interactions between tropical cyclones and fires that affect woody biomes in many islands and coastal areas. Cyclone-induced damage to trees can increase fuel loads on the ground and dryness in the understory, which increases the likelihood, intensity, and area of subsequent fires. In forest biomes, cyclone-fire interactions may initiate a grass-fire cycle and establish stable open-canopy biomes. In cyclone-prone regions, frequent cyclone-enhanced fires may generate and maintain stable open-canopy biomes (e.g., savannas and woodlands). We discuss how global change is transforming fire and cyclone regimes, extensively altering cyclone-fire interactions. These altered cyclone-fire interactions are shifting biomes away from historical states and causing loss of biodiversity.

Abstract:Hurricanes are extreme climatic events frequently affecting tropical regions such as the tropical dry forests (TDFs) in Mexico, where its frequency/intensity is expected to increase toward the year 2100. To answer how resistant is a Mexican tropical dry forest to a high-intensity hurricane, and if its degree of resistance was mediated by its conservation degree, we evaluated the effect of a category 4 hurricane over the tree community, soil nutrients, and soil enzymatic activity in two contrasting TDF ecosystems: Old-Growth Forest (OGF) and Secondary Forest (SF). In general, vegetation richness and diversity showed very high resistance one year after the hurricane, but several structural attributes did not, especially in the OGF where the tree mortality related to vegetation structure and spatial distribution of individuals was higher. Then, in the short term, SF vegetation appeared to be more resistant, whereas the OGF, with more biomass to lose, appeared to be more vulnerable. Conversely, most soil attributes showed low resistance in both stages, but especially in SF which could face more severe nutrient limitations. The response of TDF to high-intensity hurricanes, in terms of above- and belowground processes, was in part dependent on its disturbance level. Moreover, an increase in the intensity/frequency of hurricanes could lead this TDF toward a high nutrient limitation (especially by phosphorus) for the plants and consequently toward a loss of soil functioning, especially in the SF. This eventually could produce a severe degradation in fundamental attributes and functions of the ecosystem.

Abstract:Intense disturbances such as hurricanes may drastically affect ecosystems, producing both acute and long-term changes along coastlines. By disrupting human activities (e.g., fishing), hurricanes can provide an opportunity to quantify the effects of these activities on coastal ecosystems. We performed predator-exclusion experiments on oyster reefs in 2016, one-year before a category-4 hurricane ("Harvey") and again in 2018 one-year post-hurricane where the storm made landfall. Additionally, we examined 8 years (2011-2018) of fisheries-independent data to gauge how fishing pressure and fish populations were affected by the storm in three locations that varied in storm impacts. In the month following Hurricane Harvey, fishing effort dropped by 90% in the area with wind and flooding damage, and predatory fish species commonly targeted by anglers were 300% more abundant than the year prior to the hurricane. The locations without damage to fishing infrastructure did not experience declines in fishing pressure or changes in fish abundance, regardless of flooding disturbance. Reef fish and invertebrate communities directly affected by the storm were significantly different after the hurricane and were ~ 30% more diverse. With low fishing pressure, sportfish CPUE were 1.7-6.9 × higher immediately after the hurricane. Intermediate consumers, such as crabs that prey on oysters, were 45% less abundant and 10% smaller. These results indicate that hurricanes can temporarily disrupt human-ecosystem linkages and reconstitute top-down control by sportfish in estuarine food webs. Disturbance events that interrupt or weaken those interactions may yield indirect ecological benefits and provide insights into the effects of human activities on food webs.
Lessons from the Tōhoku tsunami: A model for island avifauna conservation prioritization

Abstract:Earthquake-generated tsunamis threaten coastal areas and low-lying islands with sudden flooding. Although human hazards and infrastructure damage have been well documented for tsunamis in recent decades, the effects on wildlife communities rarely have been quantified. We describe a tsunami that hit the world's largest remaining tropical seabird rookery and estimate the effects of sudden flooding on 23 bird species nesting on Pacific islands more than 3,800 km from the epicenter. We used global positioning systems, tide gauge data, and satellite imagery to quantify characteristics of the Tōhoku earthquake-generated tsunami (11 March 2011) and its inundation extent across four Hawaiian Islands. We estimated short-term effects of sudden flooding to bird communities using spatially explicit data from Midway Atoll and Laysan Island, Hawai'i. We describe variation in species vulnerability based on breeding phenology, nesting habitat, and life history traits. The tsunami inundated 21%-100% of each island's area at Midway Atoll and Laysan Island. Procellariformes (albatrosses and petrels) chick and egg losses exceeded 258,500 at Midway Atoll while albatross chick losses at Laysan Island exceeded 21,400. The tsunami struck at night and during the peak of nesting for 14 colonial seabird species. Strongly philopatric Procellariformes were vulnerable to the tsunami. Nonmigratory, endemic, endangered Laysan Teal (Anas laysanensis) were sensitive to ecosystem effects such as habitat changes and carcass-initiated epizootics of avian botulism, and its populations declined approximately 40% on both atolls post-tsunami. Catastrophic flooding of Pacific islands occurs periodically not only from tsunamis, but also from storm surge and rainfall; with sea-level rise, the frequency of sudden flooding events will likely increase. As invasive predators occupy habitat on higher elevation Hawaiian Islands and globally important avian populations are concentrated on low-lying islands, additional conservation strategies may be warranted to increase resilience of island biodiversity encountering tsunamis and rising sea levels.

Abstract:Tropical cyclones (TCs) (hurricanes, typhoons, and cyclones) are considered the natural hazard with the greatest potential for loss of life and destruction of property, for several reasons. First, TCs occur with greater frequency than many other destructive natural hazards, such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. This frequency, we are learning, depends on trends in ocean sea-surface temperatures (SSTs) (which can be monitored using the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) and the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO)) combined with other climatic factors, such as the presence/absence of El Niño and the extensiveness of easterly wave activity. Second, TCs disburse large amounts of energy, acting as a siphon and absorbing energy from the oceans and subsequently releasing it back to the atmosphere. Higher SSTs equate to greater amounts of latent heat and greater amounts of energy released during condensation during a tropical cyclone. Third, tropical cyclones are spatially extensive, from the eye wall of cumulonimbus clouds characterized by sustained and very damaging winds that can move in excess of 250 km/h (180 mph) to the spiral bands that can extend out hundreds of kilometers and capable of producing flooding rainfall. Fourth, tropical cyclones affect sub-tropical and extra-tropical locations, such as Southeastern Asia, where infrastructure is poor and there is very limited ability to provide early warnings or to evacuate human populations that often number in the millions.

Abstract:Many coral reefs have been degraded over the past two to three decades through a combination of human and natural disturbances. In Jamaica, the effects of overfishing, hurricane damage, and disease have combined to destroy most corals, whose abundance has declined from more than 50 percent in the late 1970s to less than 5 percent today. A dramatic phase shift has occurred, producing a system dominated by fleshy macroalgae (more than 90 percent cover). Immediate implementation of management procedures is necessary to avoid further catastrophic damage.

Abstract:Extreme weather events perturb ecosystems and increasingly threaten biodiversity1. Ecologists emphasize the need to forecast and mitigate the impacts of these events, which requires knowledge of how risk is distributed among species and environments. However, the scale and unpredictability of extreme events complicate risk assessment1-4-especially for large animals (megafauna), which are ecologically important and disproportionately threatened but are wide-ranging and difficult to monitor5. Traits such as body size, dispersal ability and habitat affiliation are hypothesized to determine the vulnerability of animals to natural hazards1,6,7. Yet it has rarely been possible to test these hypotheses or, more generally, to link the short-term and long-term ecological effects of weather-related disturbance8,9. Here we show how large herbivores and carnivores in Mozambique responded to Intense Tropical Cyclone Idai, the deadliest storm on record in Africa, across scales ranging from individual decisions in the hours after landfall to changes in community composition nearly 2 years later. Animals responded behaviourally to rising floodwaters by moving upslope and shifting their diets. Body size and habitat association independently predicted population-level impacts: five of the smallest and most lowland-affiliated herbivore species declined by an average of 28% in the 20 months after landfall, while four of the largest and most upland-affiliated species increased by an average of 26%. We attribute the sensitivity of small-bodied species to their limited mobility and physiological constraints, which restricted their ability to avoid the flood and endure subsequent reductions in the quantity and quality of food. Our results identify general traits that govern animal responses to severe weather, which may help to inform wildlife conservation in a volatile climate.

Abstract:As climate change is projected to continue altering the frequency and intensity of tropical cyclones (TCs; i.e., hurricanes, tropical storms, tropical depressions) through time, it is important to understand if these extreme weather events have played a role in shaping present‐day species distributions. Using temporally‐ and spatially‐explicit species distribution models (SDMs) of Puerto Rico's 10 anole lizard species, we show how model performance changes—and often improves—when predictor variables related to TC intensity and frequency are included. This work underscores the importance of incorporating data on extreme weather events and short‐term weather variability in SDMs. Driven by climate change, tropical cyclones (TCs) are predicted to change in intensity and frequency through time. Given these forecasted changes, developing an understanding of how TCs impact insular wildlife is of heightened importance. Previous work has shown that extreme weather events may shape species distributions more strongly than climatic averages; however, given the coarse spatial and temporal scales at which TC data are often reported, the influence of TCs on species distributions has yet to be explored. Using TC data from the National Hurricane Center, we developed spatially and temporally explicit species distribution models (SDMs) to examine the role of TCs in shaping present‐day distributions of Puerto Rico's 10 Anolis lizard species. We created six predictor variables to represent the intensity and frequency of TCs. For each occurrence of a species, we calculated these variables for TCs that came within 500 km of the center of Puerto Rico and occurred within the 1‐year window prior to when that occurrence was recorded. We also included predictor variables related to landcover, climate, topography, canopy cover and geology. We used random forests to assess model performance and variable importance in models with and without TC variables. We found that the inclusion of TC variables improved model performance for the majority of Puerto Rico's 10 anole species. The magnitude of the improvement varied by species, with generalist species that occur throughout the island experiencing the greatest improvements in model performance. Range‐restricted species experienced small, almost negligible, improvements but also had more predictive models both with and without the inclusion of TC variables compared to generalist species. Our findings suggest that incorporating data on TCs into SDMs may be important for modeling insular species that are prone to experiencing these types of extreme weather events.

Abstract:Globally, people have always had to deal with climate-related hazards, and in the majority of places, they have adapted gradually. However, these gradual adaptations may not be enough to withstand the expected intensity of climate-related hazards in the future. In this paper, our focus is on the effect of storms in the Faroe Islands. The islands are highly exposed to storms, which are projected to increase in intensity and potentially also in frequency in this region. The islands are characterized by being small, remote, and with a rough terrain, which makes it difficult for external actors to provide assistance. As a result, the civilian population—especially in the outer regions—often have to deal with storms and their consequences themselves. The geographical focus in this paper is the Northern Islands, and in particular the communities of Viðareiði and Hvannasund. The approach applied is qualitative, and the central question this paper tries to answer is how aspects of place attachment (social, physical, functional) affect the way in which the local population handle storms. The findings show communities that are impacted by storms, but also that their previous experiences with storms have led to an improved adaptation level, which today enables them to cope with more severe storms. The attachment they have to where they live will assist them in coping with future storms, although it can also be a hindrance to the implementation of the necessary adaptation and preparedness measures, since they presume that they are already safe.

Abstract:Tropical cyclones are expected to intensify under a warming climate, with uncertain effects on tropical forests. One key challenge to predicting how more intense storms will influence these ecosystems is to attribute impacts specifically to storm meteorology rather than differences in forest characteristics. Here we compare tree damage data collected in the same forest in Puerto Rico after Hurricanes Hugo (1989, category 3), Georges (1998, category 3), and María (2017, category 4). María killed twice as many trees as Hugo, and for all but two species, broke 2- to 12-fold more stems than the other two storms. Species with high density wood were resistant to uprooting, hurricane-induced mortality, and were protected from breakage during Hugo but not María. Tree inventories and a wind exposure model allow us to attribute these differences in impacts to storm meteorology. A better understanding of risk factors associated with tree species susceptibility to severe storms is key to predicting the future of forest ecosystems under climate warming.

Abstract:Using historical data of hurricane damage from the ten largest storms in the 20th century, the authors modelled the impacts of increasing hurricane intensity. They found that, on average, a single hurricane felled between 4.6 and9.4% of total aboveground forest carbon. Although the effect on net emissions is not instantaneous — taking up to 100 years for 90% of downed carbon to be emitted — this is a significant release of carbon far outstripping the amount sequestered by New England forests annually. In fact, a single storm was calculated to fell more than ten years' worth of sequestered carbon. Although still relatively infrequent in New England, hurricanes are predicted to become more intense as a result of climate change. Modelling hurricane damage under the assumption of increased wind speeds painted an even gloomier picture. Assuming wind speed increases of either 8% or 16%, damage extent was predicted to rise by 10.7- and 24.8-fold respectively. This study also predicted that these storms would shift geographically, moving inland and northward in regions that were rarely exposed to such catastrophic events in the past.
