Abstract:In this paper, we study a class of contracting flows of closed, convex hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space $${\mathbb {R}}^{n+1}$$ with speed $$r^{\alpha } \sigma _k$$, where $$\sigma _k$$ is the k-th elementary symmetric polynomial of the principal curvatures, $$\alpha \in {\mathbb {R}}^1$$, and r is the distance from the hypersurface to the origin. If $$\alpha \ge k+1$$, we prove that the flow exists for all time, preserves the convexity and converges smoothly after normalisation to a sphere centred at the origin. If $$\alpha <k+1$$, a counterexample is given for the above convergence. In the case $$k=1$$ and $$\alpha \ge 2$$, we also prove that the flow converges to a round point if the initial hypersurface is weakly mean-convex and star-shaped.

Abstract:We consider here a fully discrete variant of the implicit variational scheme for mean curvature flow [AlmTayWan,LucStu], in a setting where the flow is governed by a crystalline surface tension defined by the limit of pairwise interactions energy on the discrete grid. The algorithm is based on a new discrete distance from the evolving sets, which prevents the occurrence of the spatial drift and pinning phenomena identified in [BraGelNov] in a similar discrete framework. We provide the first rigorous convergence result holding in any dimension, for any initial set and for a large class of purely crystalline anisotropies, in which the spatial discretization mesh can be of the same order or coarser than the time step.

Abstract:This paper introduces a new mathematical approach to the study of time evolutions of solids K(t) in n-space whose boundaries move with velocity equal to the weighted mean curvature derived from the boundary surface energy PHI(partial derivative K(t)). These ''flat PHI curvature flows'' are limits of sequences of solutions to variational problems in which a sum of surface and bulk energy is minimized. The construction works equally well for smooth elliptic PHI's, for nondifferentiable crystalline PHI's, and for anything in between. The flows agree with classical smooth flows when the data is smooth and elliptic in any dimension and coincide with motion by crystalline curvature for polyhedral curves in the plane.

Abstract:Let M n be a smooth, compact manifold without boundary, and F 0: M n → R n+1 a smooth immersion which is convex. The one-parameter families F(·, t): M n × [0, T) → R n+1 of hypersurfaces M t n = F(·, t)(M n ) satisfy an initial value problem dt/dF(·, t) = −H k (·, t)ν(·, t), F(·, 0) = F 0(·), where H is the mean curvature and ν(·, t) is the outer unit normal at F(·, t), such that −H ν = $\overrightarrow H $ is the mean curvature vector, and k > 0 is a constant. This problem is called H k -flow. Such flow will develop singularities after finite time. According to the blow-up rate of the square norm of the second fundamental forms, the authors analyze the structure of the rescaled limit by classifying the singularities as two types, i.e., Type I and Type II. It is proved that for Type I singularity, the limiting hypersurface satisfies an elliptic equation; for Type II singularity, the limiting hypersurface must be a translating soliton.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the CR (Cauchy-Riemann) Yamabe flow with zero CR Yamabe invariant. We use the CR Poincaré inequality and a Gagliardo-Nirenberg type interpolation inequality to show that this flow has the long time solution and the solution converges to a contact form with flat pseudo-Hermitian scalar curvature exponentially.

Abstract:We consider motion by anisotropic curvature of a network of three curves immersed in the plane meeting at a triple junction and with the other ends fixed. We show existence, uniqueness and regularity of a maximal geometric solution and we prove that, if the maximal time is finite, then either the length of one of the curves goes to zero or the $L^2$ norm of the anisotropic curvature blows up.

Abstract:We study the crystalline curvature flow of planar networks with a single hexagonal anisotropy. After proving the local existence of a classical solution for a rather large class of initial conditions, we classify the homothetically shrinking solutions having one bounded component. We also provide an example of network shrinking to a segment with multiplicity two.

Abstract:We propose an algorithm for evolving spiral curves on a planar domain by normal velocities depending on the so-called crystalline curvatures. The algorithm uses a minimizing movement approach and relies on a special level set method for embedding the spirals. We present numerical simulations and comparisons demonstrating the efficacy of the proposed numerical algorithm.

Abstract:We investigate the area-preserving mean-curvature-type motion of a two-dimensional lattice crystal obtained by coupling constrained minimizing movements scheme introduced by Almgren, Taylor and Wang with a discrete-to-continuous analysis. We first examine the continuum counterpart of the model and establish the existence and uniqueness of the flat flow, originating from a rectangle. Additionally, we characterize the governing system of ordinary differential equations. Subsequently, in the atomistic setting, we identify geometric properties of the discrete-in-time flow and describe the governing system of finite-difference inclusions. Finally, in the limit where both spatial and time scales vanish at the same rate, we prove that a discrete-to-continuum evolution is expressed through a system of differential inclusions which does never reduce to a system of ODEs.

Abstract:We show that the mean curvature flow of generic closed surfaces in avoids asymptotically conical and non-spherical compact singularities. We also show that the mean curvature flow of generic closed low-entropy hypersurfaces in is smooth until it disappears in a round point. The main technical ingredient is a long-time existence and uniqueness result for ancient mean curvature flows that lie on one side of asymptotically conical or compact shrinking solitons.

Abstract:In this paper, the motion of strictly convex closed plane curves under dissipative hyperbolic mean curvature flow is studied. The hyperbolic Monge–Amp è re equation is derived by using the support function. The short‐time existence of the flow is proved, and some evolution equations are derived. Furthermore, according to different initial velocities, we discuss the expansion and contraction of the dissipative hyperbolic curvature flow; that is, if the initial velocity v ̃00 , the flow will expand to a limit curve as t→∞ .

Abstract:We consider the Allen-Cahn equation with nonlinear anisotropic diffusion and derive anisotropic direction-dependent curvature flow under the sharp interface limit. The anisotropic curvature flow was already studied, but its derivation is new. We prove both generation and propagation of the interface. For the proof we construct sub- and super-solutions applying the comparison theorem. The problem discussed in this article naturally appeared in the study of the interacting particle systems, especially of non-gradient type. The Allen-Cahn equation obtained from systems of gradient type has a simpler nonlinearity in diffusion and leads to isotropic mean-curvature flow. We extend those results to anisotropic situations.

Abstract:We consider the motion by mean curvature of an $n$-dimensional graph over a time-dependent domain in $\mathbb{R}^n$, intersecting $\mathbb{R}^n$ at a constant angle. In the general case, we prove local existence for the corresponding quasilinear parabolic equation with a free boundary, and derive a continuation criterion based on the second fundamental form. If the initial graph is concave, we show this is preserved, and that the solution exists only for finite time. This corresponds to a symmetric version of triple junction motion of hypersurfaces by mean curvature, with constant angles at the junction.
Curvature heterogeneities act as singular perturbations to smooth Laplacian fields: a fluid mechanics demonstration

Abstract:In this Letter, we use a model fluid mechanics experiment to elucidate the impact of curvature heterogeneities on two-dimensional fields deriving from harmonic potential functions. This result is directly relevant to explain the smooth stationary structures in physical systems as diverse as curved liquid crystal and magnetic films, heat and Ohmic transport in wrinkled two-dimensional materials and flows in confined channels. Combining microfluidic experiments and theory, we explain how curvature heterogeneities shape confined viscous flows. We show that isotropic bumps induce local distortions to Darcy's flows whereas anisotropic curvature heterogeneities disturb them algebraically over system-spanning scales. Thanks to an electrostatic analogy, we gain insight into this singular geometric perturbation, and quantitatively explain it using both conformal mapping and numerical simulations. Altogether our findings establish the robustness of our experimental observations and their broad relevance to all Laplacian problems beyond the specifics of our fluid mechanics experiment.
