Abstract:In this paper we study a contracting flow of closed, convex hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space ℝ^n+1 with speed f r^α K, where K is the Gauss curvature, r is the distance from the hypersurface to the origin, and f is a positive and smooth function. If α≥ n+1, we prove that the flow exists for all time and converges smoothly after normalisation to a soliton, which is a sphere centred at the origin if f ≡ 1. Our argument provides a parabolic proof in the smooth category for the classical Aleksandrov problem, and resolves the dual q-Minkowski problem introduced by Huang, Lutwak, Yang and Zhang (Acta Math. 216 (2016): 325-388), for the case q<0. If α < n+1, corresponding to the case q>0, we also establish the same results for even function f and origin-symmetric initial condition, but for non-symmetric f, counterexample is given for the above smooth convergence.

Abstract:In the paper [20], the authors introduced a Gauss curvature flow to study the Aleksandrov problem and the dual Minkowski problem. The paper [20] treated the cases when one can establish the uniform estimate for the Gauss curvature flow. In this paper, we study the $ L_p $ dual Minkowski problem, an extension of the dual Minkowski problem. We deal with some cases in which there is no uniform estimate for the Gauss curvature flow. We adopt the topological method from [13] to find a special initial condition such that the Gauss curvature flow converges to a solution of the $ L_p $ dual Minkowski problem.

Abstract:In this paper, we study a class of contracting flows of closed, convex hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space $${\mathbb {R}}^{n+1}$$ with speed $$r^{\alpha } \sigma _k$$, where $$\sigma _k$$ is the k-th elementary symmetric polynomial of the principal curvatures, $$\alpha \in {\mathbb {R}}^1$$, and r is the distance from the hypersurface to the origin. If $$\alpha \ge k+1$$, we prove that the flow exists for all time, preserves the convexity and converges smoothly after normalisation to a sphere centred at the origin. If $$\alpha <k+1$$, a counterexample is given for the above convergence. In the case $$k=1$$ and $$\alpha \ge 2$$, we also prove that the flow converges to a round point if the initial hypersurface is weakly mean-convex and star-shaped.

Abstract:This paper introduces a new mathematical approach to the study of time evolutions of solids K(t) in n-space whose boundaries move with velocity equal to the weighted mean curvature derived from the boundary surface energy PHI(partial derivative K(t)). These ''flat PHI curvature flows'' are limits of sequences of solutions to variational problems in which a sum of surface and bulk energy is minimized. The construction works equally well for smooth elliptic PHI's, for nondifferentiable crystalline PHI's, and for anything in between. The flows agree with classical smooth flows when the data is smooth and elliptic in any dimension and coincide with motion by crystalline curvature for polyhedral curves in the plane.

Abstract:In this paper, we study fully nonlinear curvature flows of noncompact spacelike hypersurfaces in Minkowski space. We prove that if the initial hypersurface satisfies certain conditions, then the flow exists for all time. Moreover, we show that after rescaling the flow converges to the future timelike hyperboloid, which is a self-expander.

Abstract:We consider an expanding flow of smooth, closed, uniformly convex hypersurfaces in (n+1)-dimensional Euclidean space with speed fu^{alpha}{sigma}_k^{beta}, where u is the support function of the hypersurface, alpha, beta are two constants, and beta>0, sigma_k is the k-th symmetric polynomial of the principle curvature radii of the hypersurface, k is an integer and 1<= k<= n. We prove that the flow has a unique smooth and uniformly convex solution for all time, and converges smoothly after normalisation, to a soliton which is a solution of a elliptic equation, when the constants alpha, beta belong to a suitable range, and the function f satisfies a strictly spherical convexity condition. When beta=1, the soliton equation is just the equation of Lp Christoffel-Minkowski problem. Thus our argument provides a proof to the well-known L_p Christoffel-Minkowski problem for the case p>= k+1 where p=2-alpha, which is identify with Ivaki's recent result.

Abstract:The present paper introduces a new class of geometric measures, the k-th (p,q)-mixed curvature measures, and a natural correspondence-(p,q)-Christoffel-Minkowski problem is proposed. The (p,q)-Christoffel-Minkowski problem posed here can be regarded as a natural generalization of the L_p Christoffel-Minkowski problem and Lp dual Minkowski problem. We investigate and arrive at the existence of smooth solution to the (p,q)-Christoffel-Minkowski problem by a type of expanding curvature flow. Furthermore, the uniqueness result of solutions to the (p,q)-Christoffel-Minkowski problem shall be discussed.

Abstract:We apply conformal flows of metrics restricted to the orthogonal distribution $D$ of a foliation to study the question: Which foliations admit a metric such that the leaves are totally geodesic and the mixed scalar curvature is positive? Our evolution operator includes the integrability tensor of $D$, and for the case of integrable orthogonal distribution the flow velocity is proportional to the mixed scalar curvature. We observe that the mean curvature vector $H$ of $D$ satisfies along the leaves the forced Burgers equation, this reduces to the linear Schrödinger equation, whose potential function is a certain "non-umbilicity" measure of $D$. On order to show convergence of the solution metrics $g_t$ as $t\to\infty$, we normalize the flow, and instead of a foliation consider a fiber bundle $\pi: M\to B$ of a Riemannian manifold $(M, g_0)$. In this case, if the "non-umbilicity" of $D$ is smaller in a sense then the "non-integrability", then the limit mixed scalar curvature function is positive. For integrable $D$, we give examples with foliated surfaces and twisted products.

Abstract:In this paper, we observe a set of functionals of metrics which are all decrease under the Calabi flow and have uniform lower bound along the flow, which give rise to a set of integral estimates on the curvature flow. Using these estimates, together with weak compactness we obtained in previous papers [8] and [10], we prove the long term existence and convergence of the Calabi flow. Thus give a new proof to Chruscial's theorem. The set of simple ideas of global integral estimates and concentration compactness should have further implications in other heat flow problems.

Abstract:We show that the mean curvature flow of generic closed surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^{3}$ avoids asymptotically conical and non-spherical compact singularities. We also show that the mean curvature flow of generic closed low-entropy hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{R}^{4}$ is smooth until it disappears in a round point. The main technical ingredient is a long-time existence and uniqueness result for ancient mean curvature flows that lie on one side of asymptotically conical or compact shrinking solitons.

Abstract:A new hyperbolic version of affine geometric flow is proposed, which is a family of plane curve flows whose acceleration is constant along affine normal direction. The equations satisfied by the graph and support function of the curve under this flow give rise to fully nonlinear hyperbolic equations. By reducing the flow to a single nonlinear hyperbolic equation, we obtain the existence for local solutions of the flow. Global existence is established by a method of LeFloch-Smoczyk for studying the hyperbolic mean curvature flow. The equations for both perimeter and area of closed curves under this flow are also obtained. Based on this, we show that for a closed curve, the solution of Cauchy problem of this flow blows up in finite time. Furthermore, some group-invariant solutions to this flow are discussed.

Abstract:Let N be a (n+1)-dimensional globally hyperbolic Lorentzian manifold with a compact Cauchy hypersurface. We consider curvature flows in N with different curvature functions F (including the mean curvature, the gauss curvature and the second elementary symmetric polynomial) and a volume preserving term. Under suitable assumptions we prove the long time existence of the flow and the exponential convergence of the corresponding graphs in the $C^\infty$-topology to a hypersurface of constant F-curvature. Furthermore we examine stability properties and foliations of constant F-curvature hypersurfaces.

Abstract:The heat flow in the planar centro-affine geometry CA(2) is described by the inviscid Burgers equation, which is different from that in Euclidean, affine and centro-equiaffine geometries. In this paper, we study the uniqueness, behaviour and Harnack inequalities of an invariant curve flow in CA(2) which is governed by a second-order nonlinear parabolic equation of the centro-affine curvature. First, we specify the flow from the general curve flow in CA(2) and compute the evolutionary equations for the geometric invariants, the local well-posedness of the second-order curve flow is studied. Second, we study special solutions of the flow, a classification to all closed self-similar solutions of the flow is provided. Finally, the Harnack inequality in differential form for the curvature equation of the flow is obtained.
Discrete Curvature Flow for Hyperbolic 3-Manifolds with Complete Geodesic Boundaries

Abstract:Every surface in the three dimensional Euclidean space have a canonical Riemannian metric, which induces constant Gaussian curvature and is conformal to the original metric. Discrete curvature flow is a feasible way to compute such canonical metrics. Similarly, three dimensional manifolds also admit canonical metrics, which induce constant sectional curvature. Canonical metrics on 3manifolds are valuable for the study of 3D topology and have the potential for volumetric parameterization and shape matching. This paper generalizes discrete curvature flow from surfaces to hyperbolic 3manifolds with complete geodesic boundaries. The metric deforms according to the curvature, until the curvature is constant everywhere. The theoretical results are introduced, the algorithm is explained in details, and thorough experiments are carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of discrete 3-manifold curvature flow.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a fully nonlinear curvature flow of a convex hypersurface in the Euclidean n-space. This flow involves k-th elementary symmetric function for principal curvature radii and a function of support function. Under some appropriate assumptions, we prove the long-time existence and convergence of this flow. As an application, we give the existence of smooth solutions to the Orlicz-Christoffel-Minkowski problem.
