Abstract:We generalize two of our previous results on abelian definable groups in $p$-adically closed fields to the non-abelian case. First, we show that if $G$ is a definable group that is not definably compact, then $G$ has a one-dimensional definable subgroup which is not definably compact. This is a $p$-adic analogue of the Peterzil-Steinhorn theorem for o-minimal theories. Second, we show that if $G$ is a group definable over the standard model $\mathbb{Q}_p$, then $G^0 = G^{00}$. As an application, definably amenable groups over $\mathbb{Q}_p$ are open subgroups of algebraic groups, up to finite factors. We also prove that $G^0 = G^{00}$ when $G$ is a definable subgroup of a linear algebraic group, over any model.

Abstract:In this paper, we give discreteness criteria of subgroups of the special linear group on ℚ p or ℂ p in two and higher dimensions. Jørgensen’s inequality gives a necessary condition for a non-elementary group of Möbius transformations to be discrete. We give a version of Jørgensen’s inequality for SL( m ,ℂ p ).

Abstract:Peterzil and Steinhorn proved that if a group G definable in an o-minimal structure is not definably compact, then G contains a definable torsion-free subgroup of dimension one. We prove here a p-adic analogue of the Peterzil-Steinhorn theorem, in the special case of abelian groups. Let G be an abelian group definable in a p-adically closed field M. If G is not definably compact then there is a definable subgroup H of dimension one which is not definably compact. In a future paper we will generalize this to non-abelian G.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a construction of abelian Paley type group schemes which are inequivalent to Paley group schemes. We then determine the equivalence amongst their configurations, the Hadamard designs or the Paley type strongly regular graphs obtained from these group schemes, up to isomorphism. We also give constructions of several families of non-abelian Paley type group schemes using strong multiplier groups of the abelian Paley type group schemes, and present the first family of p-groups of non-square order and of non-prime exponent that contain Paley type group schemes for all odd primes p.

Abstract:It is known Hrushovski and Pillay (Israel J Math 85:203–262, 1994 ) that a group G definable in the field $${\mathbb {Q}}_{p}$$ of p -adic numbers is definably locally isomorphic to the group $$H({\mathbb {Q}}_{p})$$ of p -adic points of a (connected) algebraic group H over $${\mathbb {Q}}_{p}$$. We observe here that if H is commutative then G is commutative-by-finite. This shows in particular that any one-dimensional group G definable in $${\mathbb {Q}}_{p}$$ is commutative-by-finite. This result extends to groups definable in p -adically closed fields. We prove our results in the more general context of geometric structures .

Abstract:In \cite{Pillay} and more formally in \cite{Onshuus-Pillay} it was asked whether open subgroups of $p$-adic algebraic groups are ($p$-adic) semialgebraic, equivalently, definable in the structure $(\mathbb Q_{p}, +, \times)$. We give a positive answer in the commutative case. Together with results of \cite{Prasad} this leads to a positive answer for reductive algebraic groups.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate subgroups of a given finite group which are not contained in any intersection of two different conjugates of another subgroup. Then we are able to provide a characterization of Sylow p-subgroups which are T.I. sets and some further properties of defect groups of a conjugacy class appearing in a primitive central idempotent.

Abstract:Recall that a group $G$ has finitely satisfiable generics ($fsg$) or definable $f$-generics ($dfg$) if there is a global type $p$ on $G$ and a small model $M_0$ such that every left translate of $p$ is finitely satisfiable in $M_0$ or definable over $M_0$, respectively. We show that any abelian group definable in a $p$-adically closed field is an extension of a definably compact $fsg$ definable group by a $dfg$ definable group. We discuss an approach which might prove a similar statement for interpretable abelian groups. In the case where $G$ is an abelian group definable in the standard model $\mathbb{Q}_p$, we show that $G^0 = G^{00}$, and that $G$ is an open subgroup of an algebraic group, up to finite factors. This latter result can be seen as a rough classification of abelian definable groups in $\mathbb{Q}_p$.

Abstract:This paper completes the construction of $p$-adic $L$-functions for unitary groups. More precisely, in Harris, Li and Skinner [‘$p$-adic $L$-functions for unitary Shimura varieties. I. Construction of the Eisenstein measure’, Doc. Math.Extra Vol. (2006), 393–464 (electronic)], three of the authors proposed an approach to constructing such $p$-adic $L$-functions (Part I). Building on more recent results, including the first named author’s construction of Eisenstein measures and $p$-adic differential operators [Eischen, ‘A $p$-adic Eisenstein measure for unitary groups’, J. Reine Angew. Math.699 (2015), 111–142; ‘$p$-adic differential operators on automorphic forms on unitary groups’, Ann. Inst. Fourier (Grenoble)62(1) (2012), 177–243], Part II of the present paper provides the calculations of local $\unicode[STIX]{x1D701}$-integrals occurring in the Euler product (including at $p$). Part III of the present paper develops the formalism needed to pair Eisenstein measures with Hida families in the setting of the doubling method.
On Groups with Definable F-Generics Definable in P-Adically Closed Fields

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to develop the theory of groups definable in the p-adic field Q(p), with "definable f-generics" in the sense of an ambient saturated elementary extension of Q(p). We call such groups definable f-generic groups.So, by a "definable f-generic" or dfg group we mean a definable group in a saturated model with a global f-generic type which is definable over a small model. In the present context the group is definable over Q(p), and the small model will be Q(p) itself. The notion of a dfg group is dual, or rather opposite to that of an fsg group (group with "finitely satisfiable generics") and is a useful tool to describe the analogue of torsion-free o-minimal groups in the p-adic context. In the current paper our group will be definable over Q(p) in an ambient saturated elementary extension K of Q(p), so as to make sense of the notions of f-generic type, etc. In this paper we will show that every definable f-generic group definable in Q(p) is virtually isomorphic to a finite index subgroup of a trigonalizable algebraic group over Q(p). This is analogous to the o-minimal context, where every connected torsion-free group definable in R is isomorphic to a trigonalizable algebraic group [5, Lemma 3.4]. We will also show that every open definable f-generic subgroup of a definable f-generic group has finite index, and every f-generic type of a definable f-generic group is almost periodic, which gives a positive answer to the problem raised in [28] of whether f-generic types coincide with almost periodic types in the p-adic case.

Abstract:Recently, regular Cayley maps of cyclic groups and dihedral groups have been classified. A nature question is to classify regular Cayley maps of elementary abelian $p$-groups $Z_p^n$. In this paper, a complete classification of regular Cayley maps of $Z_p^n$ is given and moreover, the number of these maps and their genera are enumerated.

Abstract:We initiate the study of p-adic algebraic groups G from the stability-theoretic and definable topological-dynamical points of view, that is, we consider invariants of the action of G on its space of types over Q(p) in the language of fields. We consider the additive and multiplicative groups of Q(p), and Z(p), the group of upper triangular invertible 2 x 2 matrices, SL(2, Z(p)), and our main focus, SL(2, Q(p)). In all cases we identify f-generic types (when they exist), minimal subflows, and idempotents. Among the main results is that the "Ellis group" of SL(2, Q(p)) is (Z) over cap x Z(p)*, yielding a counterexample to Newelski's conjecture with new features: G = G(00)= G(000) but the Ellis group is infinite. A final section deals with the action of SL(2, Q(p)) on the type space of the projective line over Q(p).

Abstract:We study the fundamental group of the $p$-subgroup complex of a finite group $G$. We show first that $\pi_1(A_3(A_{10}))$ is not a free group (here $A_{10}$ is the alternating group on $10$ letters). This is the first concrete example in the literature of a $p$-subgroup complex with non-free fundamental group. We prove that, modulo a well-known conjecture of M. Aschbacher, $\pi_1(A_p(G)) = \pi_1(A_p(S_G)) * F$, where $F$ is a free group and $\pi_1(A_p(S_G))$ is free if $S_G$ is not almost simple. Here $S_G = \Omega_1(G)/O_{p'}(\Omega_1(G))$. This result essentially reduces the study of the fundamental group of $p$-subgroup complexes to the almost simple case. We also exhibit various families of almost simple groups whose $p$-subgroup complexes have free fundamental group.

Abstract:We study the p-adic algebraic groups G from the definable topological-dynamical point of view. We consider the case where M is an arbitrary p-adic closed field and G an algebraic group over Qp admitting an Iwasawa decompostion G = KB, where K is open and definably compact over Qp, and B is a Borel subgroup of G over Qp. Our main result is an explicit description of the minimal subflow and Ellis group of the universal definable G(M)-flow SG(Mext). We prove that the Ellis group of SG(Mext) is isomorphic to the Ellis group of SB(Mext), which is B/B0. As applications, we conclude that the Ellis groups corresponding to GL(n, M) and SL(n, M) are isomorphic to ( Z x Z*p)n and (Z x Z*p)n-1 respectively, generalizing the main result of Penazzi, Pillay, and Yao in [21]. On distance-regular Cayley graphs over abelian groups of rank $2$

Abstract:The problem of constructing or characterizing strongly regular Cayley graphs (or equivalently, regular partial difference sets) has garnered significant attention over the past half-century. In [European J. Combin. 24 (2023) 777--784], Miklavič and Potočnik expanded upon this field, achieving a complete characterization of distance-regular Cayley graphs over cyclic groups by employing the method of Schur rings. In [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 97 (2007) 14--33], they formally proposed the problem of characterizing distance-regular Cayley graphs for any given class of groups. In this context, abelian groups are of particular importance, as a considerable number of distance-regular graphs with classical parameters are precisely Cayley graphs over abelian groups. In this paper, we address the Miklavič-Potočnik problem for abelian groups of rank $2$. More specifically, we identify all distance-regular Cayley graphs over the group $\mathbb{Z}_n \oplus \mathbb{Z}_p$, where $p$ is an odd prime. Our proof utilizes novel tools such as polynomial addition sets, Desarguesian affine planes, and the duality of Schur rings over abelian groups.

Abstract:In this note we study countable subgroups of the full group of a measure preserving equivalence relation. We provide various constraints on the group structure, the nature of the action, and on the measure of fixed point sets, that imply that the subgroup topology is not discrete. We mention various conjectures about discrete subgroups of full groups.

Abstract:Let G be a group and DS(G) = { H'| H is any subgroup of G}. G is said to be a DC-group if DS(G) is a chain. In this paper, we prove that a finite DC-group is a semidirect product of a Sylow p-subgroup and an abelian p'-subgroup. For the case of G being a finite p-group, we obtain some properties of a DC-group. In particular, a DC 2-group is characterized. Moreover, we prove that DC-groups are metabelian for p<5 and give an example that a non-abelian DC-group is not be necessarily metabelian for p>3.
