Abstract:To meet the space limitation of optical elements, free-form surfaces or high-order aspherical lenses are adopted in mobile cameras to compress volume. However, the application of free-form surfaces also introduces the problem of image quality mutation. Existing model-based deconvolution methods are inefficient in dealing with the degradation that shows a wide range of spatial variants over regions. And the deep learning techniques in low-level and physics-based vision suffer from a lack of accurate data. To address this issue, we develop a degradation framework to estimate the spatially variant point spread functions (PSFs) of mobile cameras. When input extreme-quality digital images, the proposed framework generates degraded images sharing a common domain with real-world photographs. Supplied with the synthetic image pairs, we design a Field-Of-View shared kernel prediction network (FOV-KPN) to perform spatial-adaptive reconstruction on real degraded photos. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed approach achieves extreme-quality computational imaging and outperforms the state-of-the-art methods. Furthermore, we illustrate that our technique can be integrated into existing postprocessing systems, resulting in significantly improved visual quality.

Abstract:Fourier single-pixel imaging (FSI) has been proven capable of acquiring excellent image quality when is sampled the fully information in Fourier domain. However, when the sampling measurements is limited, image reconstruction by applying inverse Fourier transform algorithm would result in the severe ringing effect and the loss of image details. In this report, we propose a new algorithm for FSI reconstruction based on compressed sensing theory, which utilizes joint discrete gradient and non-local self-similarity priors, thus substantially using the prior knowledge of natural images in reconstruction process. Both the results of computational simulations and experiments demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:Fourier single-pixel imaging (FSI) has been proven to achieve excellent image quality when sampling all information in the Fourier domain. However, when the size of an imaging target is large, fully sampling Fourier coefficients would result in a large waste of sampling resources. An adaptive sampling method is proposed that is simple to implement and effectively improves the reconstructed image quality from undersampled Fourier coefficients. Through a rough estimation of spectrum energy distribution, the adaptive sampling trajectory is generated by the designed adaptive probability density function. Both the results of computational simulations and experiments demonstrate that the proposed method has overcome the limitations of the insufficient sampling rates, and the reconstruction images have obtained dramatic improvements. Abstract:Fourier single-pixel imaging (FSI) usually achieves an enhanced imaging speed via undersampling; however, many details are lost in the reconstructed image obtained by frequency truncation due to the lack of the high-frequency part, and the image contains ringing artefacts due to the lack of an expression ability, thus reducing the image quality. To improve the quality of real-time imaging, a fast image reconstruction framework based on the Wasserstein generative adversarial network (WGAN) and gradient penalty (GP) is proposed. Under the common constraints of the resistance loss and content loss, confrontation training is first conducted between the generator and the discriminator in the framework, and then, an additional generator is connected to improve the fidelity of the reconstructed image based on the generation of the confrontation network. The model can be used to restore high-frequency details and denoise low-quality images that are undersampled. The simulation and experimental results show that the FSI using the GAN method, which achieved a compression rate of 95–98 %, is superior to conventional imaging in terms of the quality at a low sampling rate; therefore, the proposed scheme has potential practical applications.

Abstract:The single-pixel imaging (SPI) technique is able to capture two-dimensional (2D) images without conventional array sensors by using a photodiode. As a novel scheme, Fourier single-pixel imaging (FSI) has been proven capable of reconstructing high-quality images. Due to the fact that the Fourier basis patterns (also known as grayscale sinusoidal patterns) cannot be well displayed on the digital micromirror device (DMD), a fast FSI system is proposed to solve this problem by binarizing Fourier pattern through a dithering algorithm. However, the traditional dithering algorithm leads to low quality as the extra noise is inevitably induced in the reconstructed images. In this paper, we report a better dithering algorithm to binarize Fourier pattern, which utilizes the Sierra-Lite kernel function by a serpentine scanning method. Numerical simulation and experiment demonstrate that the proposed algorithm is able to achieve higher quality under different sampling ratios.

Abstract:Abstract Fourier single-pixel imaging has been widely concerned with its real-time and high quality. However, DMD (Digital Micromirror Array) as an illumination source cannot produce a continuous gray level of the Fourier basis pattern. Therefore, the inevitable error is produced. This paper proposes a halftone technique based on edge attenuation, which can be applied to the Fourier basis pattern generation method on DMD without loss of resolution, and compared with the traditional methods, the invention solves the problem that the traditional methods has a single scanning direction and accumulated errors, finally; we improve the image quality.

Abstract:Noise is inevitable in single-pixel imaging (SPI). Although post-processing algorithms can significantly improve image quality, they introduce additional processing time. To address this issue, we propose an online denoising single-pixel imaging scheme at the sampling stage, which uses the filter to optimize the illumination modulation patterns. The image is retrieved through the second-order correlation between the modulation patterns and the intensities detected by the single-pixel detector. Through simulations and experiments, we analyzed the impact of sampling rate, noise intensity, and filter template on the reconstructed images of both binary and grayscale objects. The results demonstrate that the denoising effect is comparable to the imaging-first followed by post-filtering procedures, but the post-processing time is reduced for the same image quality. This method offers a new way for rapid denoising in SPI, and it should be particularly advantageous in applications where time-saving is of paramount importance, such as in image-free large target classification.

Abstract:Fourier ptychographic microscopy (FPM) is a recently developed wide-field and high-resolution (HR) imaging technique, reconstructing HR spectrum from a series of low-resolution (LR) images at different illumination angles. Although many significant progresses have been made in FPM in the past few years, imaging noise is still an inevitable problem, which could seriously distort the results recovered using the conventional Fourier ptychography approach without image preprocessing. Generally, before FPM reconstruction, a thresholding denoising method is usually employed to eliminate the noise. However, conventional thresholding denoising algorithms cannot differentiate useful signals from imaging noise effectively, thus these algorithms usually eliminate signals and noise simultaneously. Here we propose an adaptive denoising method for FPM, which takes advantage of the information redundancy in FPM to separate signal from noise during the recovery process without any pre-knowledge about the noise statistics. Simulation and experimental results are presented to evaluate the performance of the proposed method. It is demonstrated that this method can both improve the accuracy and robustness of FPM and relax the imaging performance requirement for implementing high-quality FPM reconstruction.

Abstract:Fourier single-pixel imaging is one of the main single-pixel imaging techniques. To improve the imaging efficiency, some of the recent method typically select the low-frequency and discard the high-frequency information to reduce the number of acquired samples. However, sampling only a small amount of low-frequency components will lead to the loss of object details and will reduce the imaging resolution. At the same time, the ringing effect of the restored image due to frequency truncation is significant. In this paper, a new sparse Fourier single-pixel imaging method is proposed that reduces the number of samples explorations while maintaining increased image quality. The proposed method makes a special use of the characteristics of the Fourier spectrum distribution based on which the power of image information decreases gradually from low to high frequencies in the Fourier space. A variable density random sampling matrix is employed to achieve random sampling with Fourier single-pixel imaging technology, followed by the processing of the sparse Fourier spectra using compressive sensing algorithms to recover the high-quality information of the object. The new algorithm can effectively improve the quality of object restoration comparing with the existing Fourier single-pixel imaging methods which only acquire the low-frequency parts. Additionally, considering that the resolution of the system is diffraction limited, super-resolution imaging can also be achieved. Experimental results demonstrate the mainly correctness but also effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:Degradation of imaging quality due to noise sources is one of the most essential problems for single-pixel imaging (SPI). This paper presents a method that separates, identifies, and reduces noise from the 1-D signal of the SPI before reconstructing the image. The proposed method raises the quality of the picture significantly, for example, PSNR from 9.14 dB to 30.29 dB and SSIM from 5.55% to 91.99% when SNR is -15 dB in simulation. This method has a strong robustness to a variety of noise types compared to the traditional filtering methods. The experimental results verified the proposed method's feasibility and improved the image's quality from a chaotic state to an acceptable stage. The method proposed in this paper can separate, identify and remove the noise component from the sources in SPI, which may open a branch by removing noise from sources rather than post-processing.

In FPM, the quality of captured images is a critical factor that affects the final reconstruction HR result, so an effective denoising method is an indispensable process step. Here we propose an adaptive denoising method for FPM, which takes advantage of the data redundancy of FPM to separate signal from noise without any pre-knowledge about the noise statistics. Different from the traditional denoising method by reducing a fixed threshold, the proposed adaptive denoising method can more effectively eliminate noise and preserve more effective signals. This paper explains adaptive denoising principle and process steps, and finally demonstrates that this method not only improve the accuracy and robustness of FPM, but also relax the imaging performance requirement for implementing high-quality FPM reconstruction.

Abstract:Single pixel imaging is an innovative imaging scheme using active light to obtain spatial information, which has attracted much attention in the computational imaging field. However, for single pixel imaging, it is a great challenge to find an efficient technique to obtain imaging results with high quality under low sampling conditions. In order to solve this problem, a Fourier single pixel imaging (FSPI) based on a generative adversarial network (GAN) is proposed in this paper. In the proposed GAN model, perceptual loss, pixel and frequency loss are incorporated into the total loss function to better preserve the details of the target. With the help of the GAN model, the FSPI can reconstruct results with high quality at low sampling rate conditions. The numerical simulation and experiment are implemented. Compared with conventional FSPI and FSPI based on a deep convolutional auto-encoder network, the proposed method has a better visual effect and image quality evaluation index. This approach is particularly important to high speed single pixel imaging applications due to its potential for reconstructing the high-quality target image with a low sampling rate.

Abstract:Digital speckle pattern interferometry (DSPI) is a new and efficient technique for measuring the difference in out-of-plane displacement. However, DSPI fringes contain low spatial information degraded with random speckle noise and background intensity. A denoising scheme based on fast bi-dimensional ensemble empirical mode decomposition (FBEEMD) and energy estimation of bi-dimensional intrinsic mode function (BIMF) is proposed to reduce speckle noise in this paper. Furthermore, the denoising scheme is compared with other denoising methods, and evaluated quantitatively using computer-simulated and experimental DSPI fringes.

Abstract:Maritime thermal infrared (IR) imaging is susceptible to various types of mixed noise interference, such as Gaussian, stripe, and internal stray radiation noise, due to atmospheric radiation and complex dynamic backgrounds. These factors directly hinder subsequent image processing applications such as target detection and tracking. In this article, we propose a hybrid denoising model based on a model reconstruction framework to jointly address nonuniformity issues in single-frame thermal IR images. Stripe noise, due to its directional nature, exhibits distinct physical characteristics in both the spatial and frequency domains. Most existing methods rely on designing prior constraints based on features from only one domain. To adapt to diverse stripe distribution patterns, we introduce spatial priors for stripes in the hybrid denoising model, concurrently pioneering the introduction of frequency-domain priors in a plug-and-play technology for the first time. This approach facilitates mutual enhancement of multidomain characteristic constraints in stripe removal. Furthermore, we use polynomial fitting to characterize the distribution of internal stray radiation noise, which possesses global smoothness characteristics. The hybrid model effectively mitigates the impact of stripe distribution on the smoothing correction. Experiments demonstrate the effectiveness and superior performance of the proposed hybrid model in addressing mixed noise. Furthermore, we degraded the hybrid model into a destriping model and demonstrated its outstanding performance in the standalone destriping task. The proposed method can provide valuable references for the restoration of thermal IR or hyperspectral remote sensing images and offer additional information for IR target detection and tracking tasks.

Abstract:Fourier ptychographic microscopy (FPM) is a promising computational imaging technique that can bypass the diffraction limit of the objective lens and achieve high-resolution, wide field-of-view imaging. The FPM setups firstly capture a series of low-resolution (LR) intensity images by angle-varied illumination and then reconstruction algorithms recover the high-resolution (HR) complex-valued object from the LR measurements. The image acquisition process commonly introduces noise, ultimately leading to degradation in the quality of the reconstruction results. In this paper, we report a noise-robust Fourier ptychographic reconstruction method that generates the HR complex-valued object estimation using the image priors specified by denoising diffusion probabilistic models (DDPM). First, the initial estimation of the HR complex-valued object is matched with an intermediate state in the Markov chain defined by DDPM. Then, the noisy initial solution is iteratively updated to a high-quality reconstruction result in the reverse process of DDPM and gradient descent correction is incorporated to enforce data consistency with the LR measurements. The proposed method integrates DDPM specified image priors and gradient descent correction, achieving solutions with less noise-related artifacts and high fidelity for HR complex-valued object estimation in Fourier ptychographic reconstruction. We apply the proposed method on both synthetic and real captured data. The experimental results show that our method can efficiently suppress the impact of noise and improve reconstruction results quality.

Abstract:Abstract According to the properties of Fourier transform, Fourier single-pixel imaging uses the illumination lights with cosine distributions to obtain the Fourier spectrum of the object, and then apply the inverse Fourier transform to reconstruct the spatial information of the object. This technique does not require detector arrays, such as charge coupled device and has proven to be insensitive to distortion, which is a great improvement over traditional photography techniques. In this manuscript, we present a detailed analysis and discussion on the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of Fourier single-pixel imaging. Compared with conventional imaging whose SNR is independent of pixel number N , Fourier single-pixel imaging achieves an improved SNR which is up to N times as high as the dynamic range of detection. Furthermore, this SNR benefit is further confirmed experimentally, in cases of one dimension and two dimensions.

Research On Image Preprocessing Techniques Needed For Long-Distance Camera Scanning Fourier Ptychographic Imaging

Abstract:With the development of the fourier ptychography in microscopy imaging, more and more researchers consider applying fourier ptychography in long-distance imaging. However being different from microscopic imaging, long distance fourier ptychographic imaging will face more challenges, one of which is the source image quality. In this manuscript, the influence of the source image quality on camera scanning FP imaging will be investigated and simulated. In the first part, the calibration aims to solve the influence of unevenly illumination. After that, a Poisson-Gaussian mixed noise model based denoising is used and could effectively suppresses the noise through parameter estimation. Finally, Phase correlation registration has to be used to correct the mismatch between adjacent images caused by camera scanning mode. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the preprocessing methods and could make FP more robust. The signal to noise ratio could reach to 40.5dB while obtained 5x improvement in resolution.

Abstract:Single pixel imaging (SPI) is a novel technique capturing 2D images using a bucket detector with a high signal-to-noise ratio, wide spectrum range and low cost. Conventional SPI projects random illumination patterns to randomly and uniformly sample the entire scene's information. Determined by Nyquist sampling theory, SPI needs either numerous projections or high computation cost to reconstruct the target scene, especially for high-resolution cases. To address this issue, we propose an efficient single pixel imaging technique (eSPI), which instead projects sinusoidal patterns for importance sampling of the target scene's spatial spectrum in Fourier space. Specifically, utilizing the centrosymmetric conjugation and sparsity priors of natural images' spatial spectra, eSPI sequentially projects two pi/2-phase-shifted sinusoidal patterns to obtain each Fourier coefficient in the most informative spatial frequency bands. eSPI can reduce requisite patterns by two orders of magnitude compared to conventional SPI, which helps a lot for fast and high-resolution SPI.

Abstract:Single-pixel imaging (SPI), which is generally based on computational imaging, has the advantages of a wide bandwidth and the ability to image objects beyond the visual field. However, the major challenge in developing SPI is the large number of illumination patterns that are required. Unlike traditional SPI that relies on random measurement patterns, the SPI method proposed in this letter involves a two-step phase shift that reduces greatly the required number of illumination patterns. Theoretical analysis shows that 6724 illumination patterns are required to reconstruct a 128 × 128-pixel image whose peak signal-to-noise ratio exceeds 30, and these can be projected in 0.3362 s with a digital micromirror device working at full speed. Compared to SPI with a four-step phase shift, half the number of illumination patterns are required. Verification experiments show that the reconstructed images can be obtained even at a sampling ratio of 20%. The proposed SPI with a two-step phase shift is an effective means of requiring fewer illumination patterns and has great potential in dynamic detection.

Abstract:The success of ptychographic imaging experiments strongly depends on achieving high signal-to-noise ratio. This is particularly important in nanoscale imaging experiments when diffraction signals are very weak and the experiments are accompanied by significant parasitic scattering (background), outliers or correlated noise sources. It is also critical when rare events such as cosmic rays, or bad frames caused by electronic glitches or shutter timing malfunction take place. In this paper, we propose a novel iterative algorithm with rigorous analysis that exploits the direct forward model for parasitic noise and sample smoothness to achieve a thorough characterization and removal of structured and random noise. We present a formal description of the proposed algorithm and prove its convergence under mild conditions. Numerical experiments from simulations and real data (both soft and hard X-ray beamlines) demonstrate that the proposed algorithms produce better results when compared to state-of-the-art methods.
