Abstract:By using one-dimensional photon state-vector function obtained previously, a general analytic expression is deduced for the optical two-hole interference experiment, which not only greatly enlarges the range of the observable, but also completely represents the probability distribution for a photon in the whole space. On the basis of the basic rules of quantum optics, we quantitatively analyze and discuss the domain of definition of the experiment, and the quantum behavior of the interference item on the average of space.

Abstract:With the development of computer simulation technique for room acoustics, diffuse reflection is considered more and more important. In this paper, some models are developed by considering two diffuse factors in a room-diffuse reflection due to room surfaces and scattering due to objects. The surface diffusion is treated by two different methods on the basis of probability analysis or Energy Conservation Law, and the scattering among objects is simulated as a multiple random ray-tracing process. Thus the sound pressure level distribution in a diffuse sound field can be calculated more precisely and easily. Agreement between the computer simulation results and measurements shows the accuracy of the mathematical and physical model and the applicability of the computer simulation methods. These models can be used in noise control engineering, as well as in the practice of acoustical design.

Abstract:To make the mathematical models suitable for particles with arbitrary shape,the surface of Mie particle was discreted into many micro-planes,then the radiation pressure resulting from the interaction between a single incident light and a micro-plane and a individual ray tracing was obtained using the geometrical optical theory.A computer simulation program based on this mathematical model was designed to calculate the trapping force on Mie micro-particles with arbitrary shape(sphere,cone,polyhedron and particle with smooth surface).Many simulation analyses confirmed the validity of the software.It provides a powerful design and analysis tool for laser trapping being applied to nanometer testing and manufacturing.

Abstract:The image quality is the most direct method for evaluating actual optical system's quality. Imaging of standard feather image, such as resolution plate, comet and so on is also frequently used in lens test in optical industry. The existing simulation method for optical system can be divided into two categories. One is using ideal optical system model to simulate image the object formed, but the actual parameters, aberration, processing and assembly of the optical system cannot be considered. The other can calculate the special field's Spot Diagram, Point Spread Function and Module Transfer Function by the optical design software. It is widely used for optimization (design) and image restoration. In this paper, the actual optical system is simulated by our self-developed simulation software, the target image is entered, the ray tracing method is used and the simulated image is received, which is formed by the object image of the practical optical system with errors. Known parameters of the optical system are used in this article. The correctness of simulation results is demonstrated. And the targeted photorealistic images with colors and photometric information can be gotten by the simulation software, and the more rays be used, the more fields be cut, the simulated image much closer to the actual image. The errors possible existing in optical system processing and assembly, such as eccentric, tilt or surface error are considered in our simulation software, and the simulated image we get is affected by these factors. So that we can give the reasonable tolerances, speed up the development efficiency and reduce cost.

Abstract:A novel modeling and simulation for the interference control was proposed based on the analysis of the operation principle and application characteristics of the Fourier transform spectrometer. Under the Saber environment, the simulation models of voice coil motor, DSP controller, feedback laser and PWM driver circuit were built by the models and MAST language, and the simulation with optical- electro-mechanical integration was carried out. In the double closed loop control system, the system tracked the desired optical path difference velocity stably with PI control strategy. Meanwhile, the disturbance caused by micro-vibration was simulated according to its application environment. The simulation results verify the rationality and effectiveness of the model of system. It provides the conveniences of design and debug for the physical system.

Abstract:Optics is an experiment-oriented lesson that plays an important role in middle school physics. Simulation technology based on game engine has attracted many educators and teachers to explore its application in pedagogy because it is attractive, interactive and low-cost. This paper designs an optical experiment simulation based on the Unity3D game engine, which implements three optical experiments: mirror reflection, water refraction and Young’s double-slit interference. Furthermore, this paper constructs an optical experiment simulation software library, which can be reused to other optical simulation experiment system.

Abstract:We present a computer simulation model that reproduces, event-by-event, the wave mechanical results of double-slit and two-beam interference experiments. The same model also simulates a one-to-one copy of a single-photon interference experiment with a Fresnel biprism (Jacques V. et al., Eur. Phys. J. D, 35 (2005) 561). The model satisfies Einstein's criterion of local causality and is solely based on experimental facts, comprising the apparatuses used in the experiment and the observation of individual detector clicks. Our results prove that it is possible to give a particle-only description of single-photon double-slit experiments.

Abstract:To avoid the limits of traditional optical real lab on the opening hours,space and equipments,an object-oriented approach was applied to the modeling of virtual equipments and the simulation of various experimental scenes and status were realized through developing of event driven applications based on C# language in Visual Studio 2005.Real-time interactive virtual adjustments of optical paths which include adjusting the laser beam to be parallel to the work platform,adjusting the chief ray of the laser beam to go through the center of the lens optical surface,adjusting the pinhole to position in the focus of the extender lens,adjusting the collimating lens based on shearing interferometry to get collimated laser beam,adjusting the grating in spectrometer to locate in the plane perpendicular to the optical axis and the grating line to be parallel to the slit,could be simulated through operations of the mouse and keyboard.This WYSIWYG way of virtual experiment needs no real experimental equipment support,can realize concept of if users can't come to the lab…,the lab without walls will come to users!,is helpful to enhance perceptual knowledge and deepen the understanding of the optical basic theory.

Abstract:We introduce an event-based corpuscular simulation model that reproduces the wave mechanical results of single-photon double-slit and two-beam interference experiments and (of a one-to-one copy of an experimental realization) of a single-photon interference experiment with a Fresnel biprism. The simulation comprises models that capture the essential features of the apparatuses used in the experiment, including the single-photon detectors recording individual detector clicks. We demonstrate that incorporating in the detector model, simple and minimalistic processes mimicking the memory and threshold behavior of single-photon detectors is sufficient to produce multipath interference patterns. These multipath interference patterns are built up by individual particles taking one single path to the detector where they arrive one-by-one. The particles in our model are not corpuscular in the standard, classical physics sense in that they are information carriers that exchange information with the apparatuses of the experimental set-up. The interference pattern is the final, collective outcome of the information exchanges of many particles with these apparatuses. The interference patterns are produced without making reference to the solution of a wave equation and without introducing signalling or non-local interactions between the particles or between different detection points on the detector screen.

Abstract:Using the spatial light modulator(SLM) and CCD camera to substitute the traditional lithographic masks and white screens,a novel quantitative diffractive and interferential optics experimental system is developed.Slits,apertures and other patterns generated by plotting software of personal computer are sent to the SLM,their far field diffractive and interferential images are acquired by CCD camera,which are then processed and analyzed quantitatively by personal computer.Slits and apertures' diffraction formulas can be proved by this method.The diffractive and interferential images of abnormal-shaped apertures which are complex distributed may also be observed,stored, measured and analyzed conveniently.

Abstract:In this paper, we provide an algorithm and general framework for the simulation of photons passing through linear optical interferometers. Given $n$ photons at the input of an $m$-mode interferometer, our algorithm computes the probabilities of all possible output states with time complexity $O\left({n\binom{n+m-1}{m-1}}\right)$, linear in the number of output states $\binom{n+m-1}{m-1}$. It outperforms the permanent-based method by an exponential factor, and for the restricted problem of computing the probability for one given output it improves the time complexity over the state-of-the-art for the permanent of matrices with multiple rows or columns, with a tradeoff in the memory usage. Our algorithm also has additional versatility by virtue of its use of memorisation -- the storing of intermediate results -- which is advantageous in situations where several input states may be of interest. Additionally it allows for hybrid simulations, in which outputs are sampled from output states whose probability exceeds a given threshold, or from a restricted set of states. We consider a concrete, optimised implementation, and we benchmark the efficiency of our approach compared to existing tools.

Abstract:Digital quantum simulation is the process of simulating the dynamics of a physical system by a programmable quantum computer. The universality of quantum computers makes it possible to simulate any quantum system, whether fermionic or bosonic. In this work, we discuss the application of digital quantum simulations to simulate a ubiquitous bosonic system, a beam splitter. To perform the boson-to-qubit mapping, we used the gray code, whose superiority over other encoding schemes has been shown recently. We validated our quantum circuit that mimics the action of a beam splitter by simulating the Hong-Ou-Mandel interference experiment. We simulated the experiment in both quantum simulators and actual quantum backends and were able to observe the HOM interference.

Abstract:Abstract The textbook description of multiple slit interference employs a standard path difference formula that was originally calculated for the purpose of analyzing Young’s double slit experiment. It was arrived at on the basis of a pair of assumptions that help simplify the geometry of the slit-barrier-screen arrangement and the ensuing formalism needed to estimate the positions of interference fringes on the detection screen. According to the conventional approach, convergent rays of light that emanate from different slits can be treated as effectively parallel in the far field limit. Such a parallel ray approximation-based analysis was shown by Thomas (2019; 2020) to be redundant, paradoxical and limited in accuracy. In this paper, the task of reformulation that began previously with the elementary two-slit experiment is now extended to encompass the N -slit scenario, diffraction at a single-slit and the formation of circular fringes. In order to derive one of the key results (the generalized hyperbola theorem for N -point sources), a novel computational technique called analytical induction is introduced. The procedure involves a synthesis of concepts from Cartesian geometry and discrete mathematics, namely coordinate transformation by Euclidean translation and a method of proof called the principle of mathematical induction, respectively. The final goal attained are two distribution functions that succinctly and precisely describe the variation of intensity of interference fringes on the distant screen, when it is oriented parallel and perpendicular relative to the line joining the sources. A comparison is drawn between the predictions of the conventional and the new analyses by means of numerical-graphical simulation with MATLAB. The theoretical methods and results presented herein may have a significant bearing in areas of applied optics like interferometry and diffraction crystallography. On the pedagogic front, it is suggested that the current geometrical program being visually more intuitive, be incorporated into the standard curriculum of an advanced undergraduate/graduate level course in physical optics, to complement the conventional approach.

Abstract:Self-image interference in a single mode-no-core-single mode fiber plays an important role especially for length optimization before acting as a sensor. The interference can be observed through optical simulation software. Past literature has successfully demonstrated the interference via COMSOL Multiphysics®, but the simulation was not restricted to the use of important domains and settings such as perfectly matched layer and surrounding domain causing imprecise simulation results. This paper proposes a simulation of self-image interference in a single mode-no-core-single mode fiber by using the wave-optics module in COMSOL Multiphysics® software. The beam propagation method is used to observe the self-image interference for different self-image indexes ranging from one to four indexes while the self-image length is obtained from the theoretical calculation before a simulation is carried out. The results show that accurate results can be obtained with restricted simulation settings. The number of the self-image index and self-image length produced by the simulation are similar to the calculation. The self-image point is located exactly at the calculated length with a four-decimal point 0.0000 difference, thus overcoming the limitation of the simulated previous work. In the future, the simulation settings and results can be used for reference to simulate the single mode- no-core-single mode fiber structure.

Abstract:Interferometric scattering microscopy is a powerful technique that enables various applications, such as mass photometry and particle tracking. Here we present a numerical toolbox to simulate images obtained in interferometric scattering, coherent bright-field, and dark-field microscopy. The scattered fields are calculated using a boundary element method, facilitating the simulation of arbitrary sample geometries and substrate layer structures. A fully vectorial model is used for simulating the imaging setup. We demonstrate excellent agreement between our simulations and experiments for different shapes of scatterers and excitation angles. Notably, for angles near the Brewster angle, we observe a contrast enhancement which may be beneficial for nanosensing applications. The software is available as a Matlab toolbox.

Abstract:The utilization of chaotic optical communication, a physical layer security technology, has the potential to enhance the security of optical fiber networks. In this paper, we take knowledge acquired while teaching "A chaotic security system based on phase-intensity (P-I) electro-optic feedback" as an example and, in detail, introduce a teaching implementation process based on the combination of Optisystem and Matlab. Firstly, based on the Lang–Kobayashi (L-K) laser equation, the generation mechanism of electro-optic feedback chaos was explained. Secondly, the P-I electro-optic feedback chaos was analyzed theoretically with the help of Matlab. Finally, a laser chaotic optical communication system based on electro-optic feedback was built with the help of Optisystem (15.0.0) software, and the performance of the communication was simulated and analyzed through the design of system parameters. The teaching design model and facilitate the concretization of the abstract theory of "the principle of chaos generated by electro-optic feedback, the composition of chaotic optical communication system and the performance index of chaotic communication system". Through after-class exercises and questionnaire surveys, it was verified that the teaching method is widely recognized by students and that it effectively improves the teaching effect of the course of laser chaotic communication and the students' academic research ability.
