Abstract:Flexible solid-state lithium batteries based on self-healing electrolytes are promising alternatives to resolve battery breakage issues in wearable electronic devices. However, self-healing electrolytes for lithium batteries are far from wide applications for their low ionic conductivity and limited self-healing capability. Now, a new kind of composite self-healing electrolyte is fabricated based on dicationic polymerized ionic liquids (PILs) as a backbone filled in an ionic liquid within interspaces among chain segments. The self-healing function is realized through reversible ionic bonds constructed by abundant cations and anions existing in polymer chains and ionic liquids in the interspaces. Moreover, the polymer backbone incorporated with the ionic liquid forms a sea-island system that works as interlaced channels for Li+ transfer, boosting the ionic conductivity of the electrolytes. As a result, the composite electrolytes exhibit efficient self-healing performance, good flexibility and high ionic conductivity. This work provides a brand new vision and considerable potential for developing self-healing lithium batteries.

Abstract:Solid polymer electrolytes are potential replacement of liquid electrolytes due to their much less flammability and leakage. Among them, poly (vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP)-based electrolytes have several advantages including improved processability and electrochemical stability. Unfortunately, poor ionic conductivity and mechanical properties due to high plasticizer concentration hinder their practical applications. Herein, we address these issues by exploiting the solvation effect in the electrolyte through tuning the amount of residual N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) and lithium salts. Moreover, by blending with porous carbon (PC) the mechanical integrity of the PVDF-HFP electrolytes is substantially enhanced due to improved interfacial bonding and specific surface area. The appropriate value of electrical conductivity and highly porous morphology of PC also meet the ionic transport and electronic insulation requirements. With the absorbed residual NMP as plasticizer and complexed with Li ions to formLi[NMP](3)(+) , ionic conductivity and amorphicity are improved. By elucidating the solvent and salt concentration interplay, Li-ion conductivity of up to 0.56 mS cm(-,) wide electrochemical window of 5 V versus Li/Li+ and 1000 h of cycling stability (versus Li, 0.2 mA/cm(2)) are obtained. These findings afford a novel electrolyte design guideline for enhancing interfacial compatibility and cycling through hybridization and ion solvation to develop practical lithium batteries.
Self‐Healable Solid Polymeric Electrolytes for Stable and Flexible Lithium Metal Batteries

Abstract:The key issue holding back the application of solid polymeric electrolytes in high-energy density lithium metal batteries is the contradictory requirements of high ion conductivity and mechanical stability. In this work, self-healable solid polymeric electrolytes (SHSPEs) with rigid-flexible backbones and high ion conductivity are synthesized by a facile condensation polymerization approach. The all-solid Li metal full batteries based on the SHSPEs possess freely bending flexibility and stable cycling performance as a result of the more disciplined metal Li plating/stripping, which have great implications as long-lifespan energy sources compatible with other wearable devices.

Abstract:Ionically conductive elastomers are necessary for realizing human-machine interfaces, bioelectronic applications, or durable wearable sensors. Current design strategies, however, often suffer from solvent leakage and evaporation, or from poor mechanical properties. Here, we report a strategy to fabricate ionic elastomers (IHPs) demonstrating high conductivity (0.04 S m-1), excellent electrochemical stability (>60,000 cycles), ultra-stretchability (up to 1400%), high toughness (7.16 MJ m-3), and fast self-healing properties, enabling the restoration of ionic conductivity within seconds, as well as no solvent leakage. The ionic elastomer is composed of in situ formed physically cross-linked poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) networks and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG). The long molecular chains of PEG serve as a solvent for dissolving electrolytes, improve its long-term stability, reduce solvent leakage, and ensure the outstanding mechanical properties of the IHP. Surprisingly, the incorporation of ions into PEG simultaneously enhances the strength and toughness of the elastomer. The strengthening and toughening mechanisms were further revealed by molecular simulation. We demonstrate an application of the IHPs as (a) flexible sensors for strain or temperature sensing, (b) skin electrodes for recording electrocardiograms, and (c) a tough and sensing material for pneumatic artificial muscles. The proposed strategy is simple and easily scalable and can further inspire the design of novel ionic elastomers for ionotronics applications.

Abstract:Flexible electrolytes with solid self‐supporting properties are highly desired in the fields of energy and electronics. However, traditional flexible electrolytes prepared by doping ionic liquids or salt solutions into a polymer matrix pose a risk of liquid component leakage during device operation. In this work, we report the development of supramolecular ionic network electrolytes using polyoxometalate nanoclusters as supramolecular crosslinkers to solidify bola‐type zwitterionic liquids. The resulting self‐supporting electrolytes possess semi‐solid features and show a high proton conductivity of 8.2×10−4 S cm−1 at low humidity (RH = 30%). Additionally, the electrolytes exhibit a typical plateau region in rheological tests, indicating that their dynamic network structures can contribute mechanical behavior similar to the entangled networks in covalent polymer materials. This work introduces a new paradigm for designing flexible solid electrolytes and expands the concept of reticular chemistry to noncrystalline systems. This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Abstract Stretchable ionic conductors are considerable to be the most attractive candidate for next-generation flexible ionotronic devices. Nevertheless, high ionic conductivity, excellent mechanical properties, good self-healing capacity and recyclability are necessary but can be rarely satisfied in one material. Herein, we propose an ionic conductor design, dynamic supramolecular ionic conductive elastomers (DSICE), via phase-locked strategy, wherein locking soft phase polyether backbone conducts lithium-ion (Li + ) transport and the combination of dynamic disulfide metathesis and stronger supramolecular quadruple hydrogen bonds in the hard domains contributes to the self-healing capacity and mechanical versatility. The dual-phase design performs its own functions and the conflict among ionic conductivity, self-healing capability, and mechanical compatibility can be thus defeated. The well-designed DSICE exhibits high ionic conductivity (3.77 × 10 −3 S m −1 at 30 °C), high transparency (92.3%), superior stretchability (2615.17% elongation), strength (27.83 MPa) and toughness (164.36 MJ m −3 ), excellent self-healing capability (~99% at room temperature) and favorable recyclability. This work provides an interesting strategy for designing the advanced ionic conductors and offers promise for flexible ionotronic devices or solid-state batteries.

Abstract:Searching for ultra-safe flexible electrolytes is crucial to the exploitation of flexible solid-state batteries and wearable devices. However, it is very challenging to simultaneously conquer the issues of the elastic electrolyte, including low ionic conductivity, inferior electrolyte/electrode interface compatibility, and unsatisfying cycling stability of the assembled cell. Herein, we developed an elastic PEL electrolyte using poly(butyl acrylate) cross-linked polyethylene glycol and EMIMTFSI with an ultrahigh elongation of 1000%. The PEL-0.1 electrolyte de-livers an ionic conductivity of 1.19 x 10(-4) S cm(-1) and good flame resistance. The superior interface compati-bility between electrodes and electrolyte is realized by the in situ polymerized PEL on cathode and contact stability towards metallic lithium, which facilitates the ion conduction in the solid-state cell and accommodate the electrode volume changes during the charge/discharge processes. The Li/PEL-0.1/Li cell can stable cycle for 300 h at 50 mV. The little difference in the impedance of the tabulate and wire-shaped solid-state batteries at various deformation states demonstrates the good shape conformability and feasibility of flexible PEL electrolyte. The integrated LiFePO4/PEL-0.1/Li batteries show excellent cycling stability at all the temperatures of 25 & DEG;C, 40 & DEG;C and 60 & DEG;C. A series of destructive operations on the working pouch cell confirms the superior safety and practicability of the designed electrolyte. The study proposed a promising ultrasafe and flexible electrolyte with outstanding electrochemical performance in the applications of the next-generation flexible solid-state lithium batteries and wearable devices.
In-Built Curable High-Salt-Concentrated Elastomeric Polymer Electrolytes for Integrated All-Solid-State Lithium Batteries and Ion Conduction

Abstract:The elastomeric polymer-in-salt electrolytes (PISEs) comprising a polyether backbone and pendant cyclic carbonates have been developed through a mild and clean carbonate-amine reaction. The pendant cyclic carbonate moieties, analogous to the classic carbonate liquid electrolytes, can host lithium salts to a high concentration on the one hand; on the other hand, they can function as reactive sites toward diamine cross-linkers. This simple and efficient approach, free of extra additives and residuals, facilitates the in situ integration of the polymer electrolyte and the cathode in which the PISE also serves as an ion-conductive binder. The resulting in-built flexible PISE elastomers exhibit enhanced mechanical stability, favorable interfacial compatibility, and a high lithium-ion transference number of up to 0.72. Moreover, with the evolution of solvation structures of lithium ions encompassing their coordination with TFSI counterions and different moieties of polymer electrolytes, the particular molecular conformations of TFSI counterions have been revealed at the salt concentrations from dilute to nondilute regimes by spectral analysis. It is found that lithium ions interact preferentially with the ether segments of the polymer electrolytes at the low-salt-content regime, while nearly all of the cyclic carbonates as well as TFSI counterions participate in the coordination of lithium ions at the high-salt-content regime. The population of the cis-conformation of TFSI- rises with respect to the trans-conformation as the salt concentration increases. Ion conduction mediated by solvating polymer chains and clustering of counterions is proposed to dictate the enhanced ionic conductivity and lithium-ion transference number in this polymer-in-salt system. This integrated composite cathode/electrolyte strategy enables a compact interfacial contact and thus facilitates ion conduction across the boundary, eventually leading to all-solid-state LiFePO4/Li cells with a prolonged cycling stability and a high cathode areal capacity at ambient temperature. The present work provides a facile approach to tailor the polymer composite structure for flexible solid batteries with an optimal electrochemical performance.

Abstract:Achieving superionic conductivity from solid‐state polymer electrolytes is an important task in the development of future energy storage and conversion technologies. Herein, a platform for innovative electrolyte technologies is presented based on a bifunctional polymer, poly(3‐hydroxy‐4‐sulfonated styrene) (PS‐3H4S). By incorporating –OH and –SO3H functional groups at adjacent positions in the styrene repeating unit, "intra‐monomer" hydrogen bonds are formed to effectively weaken the electrostatic interactions of the –SO3– moieties in the polymer matrix with embedded ions, promoting rich structural and dynamic heterogeneity in PS‐3H4S electrolyte. Upon the incorporation of an ionic liquid, interconnected rod‐like ion channels, which allow the decoupling of ion relaxation from polymer relaxation, are formed in the stiff motif of the polymeric domains passivated by interfacial ionic layers. This results in accelerated proton hopping through the glassy polymer matrix, and proton hopping becomes more pronounced at cryogenic temperatures down to −35 °C. The PS‐3H4S/ionic liquid composite electrolytes exhibit a high ionic conductivity of 10−3 S cm−1 and high storage modulus of ∼100 MPa at 25 °C, and could be successfully applied in soft actuators and lithium metal batteries. Abstract:Abstract Electrochemical cells based on alkali metal anodes are receiving intensive scientific interest as potentially transformative technology platforms for electrical energy storage. Chemical, morphological, mechanical and hydrodynamic instabilities at the metal anode produce uneven metal electrodeposition and poor anode reversibility, which, are among the many known challenges that limit progress. Here, we report that solid-state electrolytes based on crosslinked polymer networks can address all of these challenges in cells based on lithium metal anodes. By means of transport and electrochemical analyses, we show that manipulating thermodynamic interactions between polymer segments covalently anchored in the network and “free” segments belonging to an oligomeric electrolyte hosted in the network pores, one can facilely create hybrid electrolytes that simultaneously exhibit liquid-like barriers to ion transport and solid-like resistance to morphological and hydrodynamic instability.

Abstract:Ionic gel electrolyte retains the characteristics of non-volatilization, non-flammability and outstanding electrochemical stability of ionic liquid, and shows good electrochemical performance combined with the excellent characteristics of different matrix materials, which is considered to be the best choice to achieve high energy density and safety at the same time. In this paper, a flexible and self-healing ionic gel electrolyte was prepared using a solvent-assisted method based on a zteric ion (ZI) copolymer. Abundant hydrogen bonds and synergistic interaction of ions in the electrolyte system endowed it with remarkable self-healing ability. An ionic conductivity of 9.06 × 10−4 S cm−1 at room temperature was achieved. Moreover, the lithium-ion transference number was increased to 0.312. The ionic gel electrolyte has a self-healing function which guarantees long-term tolerance during charging and discharging. The capacity retention rate of the Li//LiFePO4 battery was 96% after 155 cycles at 0.1 C at 60 °C. This polymer electrolyte is expected to solve the problem of increasing polarization, which is caused by the low lithium ions migration number in ionic liquid electrolyte. And ultimately, it gave rise to a good rate performance.

Abstract:Polymer electrolytes provide a safe solution for future solid-state high-energy-density batteries. Materials that meet the simultaneous requirement of high ionic conductivity and high transference number remain a challenge, in particular for new battery chemistries beyond lithium such as Na, K and Mg. Herein, we demonstrate the versatility of a polymeric ionic liquid (PolyIL) as a polymer solvent to achieve this goal for both Na and K. Using molecular simulations, we predict and elucidate fast alkali metal ion transport in PolyILs through a structural diffusion mechanism in a polymer-in-salt environment, facilitating a high metal ion transference number simultaneously. Experimental validation of these computationally designed Na and K polymer electrolytes shows good ionic conductivities up to 1.0 × 10 −3 S cm −1 at 80 °C and a Na + transference number of ~0.57. An electrochemical cycling test on a Na ∣ 2:1 NaFSI/PolyIL ∣ Na symmetric cell also demonstrates an overpotential of 100 mV at a current density of 0.5 mA cm −2 and stable long-term Na plating/stripping performance of more than 100 hours. PolyIL-based polymer-in-salt strategies for new solid-state electrolytes thus offer an alternative route to design high-performance next-generation sustainable battery chemistries.

Abstract:EFFORTS to develop a high-voltage, lightweight rechargeable battery for electrically powered vehicles have focused on batteries based on solid electrolytes, which offer good mechanical strength, easy packaging and high energy densities. An important objective is to identify an electrolyte with the desired combination of mechanical properties, electrical conductivity and stability against powerfully oxidizing and reducing electrodes (lithium is preferred for the anode). Among the most promising materials are rubbery 'salt-in-polymer' electrolytes and highly conducting but brittle superionic glass electrolytes. In the latter category are salts with good lithium-ion conductivity, which are compatible with lithium-anode systems. Here we describe new ionic conductors — 'polymer-in-salt' materials — in which lithium salts are mixed with small quantities of the polymers polypropylene oxide and polyethylene oxide. These materials have glass transitions low enough to remain rubbery at room temperature while preserving good lithium-ion conductivities and high electrochemical stability.

DC‐PEG/60LiTFSI shows great potential for multifunctional flexible and stretchable soft ionic electronics, encompassing applications such as wearable sensor devices, physiological electrical signal detection, and ionic electroluminescent devices discussed in this paper. Flexible and stretchable ion‐conductive elastomers have shown promising applications in wearable flexible sensor devices, biopotential detection, electroluminescent devices, and other areas. However, the currently employed gel‐based ion‐conductive materials encounter issues such as solvent volatilization or leakage. Herein, there is an urgent requirement to develop a solid‐state ionic conductor material that is both safe and reliable, free from issues of liquid leakage. Here, the study reports a solid‐state ion‐conductive elastomer with excellent mechanical properties and high ionic conductivity based on a synergistic strategy of multiple interaction forces. The solid‐state ion−conductive elastomer exhibits high ionic conductivity (1.42 × 10−4 S cm−1 at 25 °C), superior stretchability (≈1550% elongation) and strength (1.48 MPa). Moreover, the solid‐state ion‐conductive elastomer exhibits high resilience and possesses excellent self‐healing ability. The wearable sensor, prepared based on the solid‐state ion‐conductive elastomer with excellent comprehensive performance, not only demonstrates high strain sensitivity but also captures high‐quality epidermal biopotential signals from the human body in biopotential detection. Additionally, the solid‐state ion‐conductive elastomer can serve as an electrode in ionic electroluminescent devices for human wearable applications. It is believed that the solid‐state ion‐conductive elastomer can provide novel opportunities for the advancement of wearable devices and soft ionotronics.

A Healable Quasi‐Solid Polymer Electrolyte with Balanced Toughness and Ionic Conductivity

Abstract:Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) have garnered extensive attention as potential alternatives to traditional liquid electrolytes, primarily due to their prowess in curbing lithium dendrite formation and preventing electrolyte leaks. The quest for SPEs that are both mechanically robust and exhibit superior ionic conductivity has been vigorous. However, achieving a harmonious balance between these two attributes remains a significant challenge. In this study, we introduce a novel quasi‐solid electrolyte, ingeniously crafted from a poly(urethane‐urea) network, enriched with lithium salts and plasticizers. This innovative composition not only boasts remarkable toughness but also ensures commendable ionic conductivity. Our post‐gelation method yields gel polymer electrolytes that undergo rigorous evaluation, leading to an optimized version that stands out with its exceptional room‐temperature ionic conductivity (2.94 × 10‐4 S cm‐1) and outstanding toughness (11.9 MJ m‐3). Moreover, it demonstrates a broad electrochemical window (4.73 V), remarkable stability across a 600‐hour cycle test, a high capacity retention exceeding 80% after 100 cycles at 0.2 C, and a noteworthy self‐healing capability. This quasi‐solid polymer electrolyte emerges as a promising contender to replace current liquid electrolyte solutions.

Progress on the Stretchable Composite Solid Polymer Electrolytes

Abstract:The wearable electronics require flexible batteries to serve as power sources with high energy density, capacity, safety, and reliability. Stretchable solid electrolytes with high ionic conductivity are key to developing flexible all-solid-state lithium batteries which meet the above requirements. This paper reviews the typical mechanisms and recent progress on enhancing the ionic conductivity of composite solid polymer electrolytes. The strategies for decoupling the ionic conductivity and stretchability of solid polymer electrolytes are also discussed. The advanced characterization tools which may help to promote the study on stretchable composite solid polymer electrolytes are briefly introduced. Finally, the future trends and important directions of the technologies of stretchable composite solid polymer electrolytes are proposed as well.
