Abstract:The explicit construction of function fields tower with many rational points relative to the genus in the tower play a key role for the construction of asymptotically good algebraic-geometric codes. In 1997 Garcia, Stichtenoth and Thomas [6] exhibited two recursive asymptotically good Kummer towers over any non-prime field. Wulftange determined the limit of one tower in his PhD thesis [13]. In this paper we determine the limit of another tower [14].

Abstract:Let us consider an algebraic function field defined over a finite Galois extension $K$ of a perfect field $k$. We give some conditions allowing the descent of the definition field of the algebraic function field from $K$ to $k$. We apply these results to the descent of the definition field of a tower of function fields.We give explicitly the equations of the intermediate steps of an Artin-Schreier type extension reduced from $\F_{q^2}$ to $\F_q$. By applying these results to a completed Garcia-Stichtenoth's tower we improve the upper bounds and the upper asymptotic bounds of the bilinear complexity of the multiplication in finite fields.

Abstract:Let $\ell$ be a rational prime. We show that an analogue of a conjecture of Greenberg in graph theory holds true. More precisely, we show that when $n$ is sufficiently large, the $\ell$-adic valuation of the number of spanning trees at the $n$th layer of a $\mathbb{Z}_{\ell}^{d}$-tower of graphs is given by a polynomial in $\ell^{n}$ and $n$ with rational coefficients of total degree at most $d$ and of degree in $n$ at most one.

Abstract:Recently Bassa, Garcia and Stichtenoth constructed a tower of function fields over GF(q^3) having many rational places relative to their genera. We show that, by removing the bottom field from this tower, we obtain the same tower we would obtain by removing certain fields from a tower constructed previously by Bezerra, Garcia and Stichtenoth.

Abstract:In this paper we consider a tower of number fields $\cdots \supseteq K(1) \supseteq K(0) \supseteq K$ arising naturally from a continuous $p$-adic representation of $\mathrm{Gal}(\bar{\mathbb{Q}}/K)$, referred to as a $p$-adic Lie tower over $K$. A recent conjecture of Daqing Wan hypothesizes, for certain $p$-adic Lie towers of curves over $\mathbb{F}_p$, a stable (polynomial) growth formula for the genus. Here we prove the analogous result in characteristic zero, namely: the $p$-adic valuation of the discriminant of the extension $K(i)/K$ is given by a polynomial in $i,p^i$ for $i$ sufficiently large. This generalizes a previously known result on discriminant-growth in $\mathbb{Z}_p$-towers of local fields of characteristic zero.

Abstract:Cyclic number fields of odd prime degree are constructed as ray class fields over the rational number field. They are collected in multiplets sharing a common conductor and discriminant. The algorithms are implemented in Magma and applied to all cyclic quintic and cyclic cubic fields with conductors below 100000. Our primary attention is devoted to the theory of cyclic cubic fields with two or three prime divisors of the conductor. These fields form doublets and quartets. Theoretical techniques comprise cubic residue conditions between the primes dividing the conductor, the structure of 3-class groups of all components of doublets and quartets, Galois cohomology of unit groups and ambiguous principal ideals, absolute genus fields and their bicyclic bicubic subfields, class number relations, transfer kernels and abelian quotient invariants of unramified cyclic cubic extensions and their impact on the class field tower, pattern recognition via Artin transfers on descendant trees of finite groups with order a power of 3, the Shafarevich Theorem on the relation rank of the 3-class field tower group, and the Galois action on the tower group and on its metabelianization. Rigorous proofs are given for the first occurrences of three-stage towers over cyclic cubic fields with elementary bicyclic or tricyclic or non-elementary bicyclic 3-class group. Experimentally, the second p-class groups and the length of the p-class tower are determined for all conductors below 100000 and for p=2,3,5, with the exception of the few intricate octets. An interesting application is able to identify and realize the closed groups by Andozhskii and Tsvetkov.

Abstract:Let $p$ be an odd prime number. We study growth patterns associated with finitely ramified Galois groups considered over the various number fields varying in a $\mathbb{Z}_p$-tower. These Galois groups can be considered as non-commutative analogues of ray class groups. For certain $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions in which a given prime above $p$ is completely split, we prove precise asymptotic lower bounds. Our investigations are motivated by the classical results of Iwasawa, who showed that there are growth patterns for $p$-primary class numbers of the number fields in a $\mathbb{Z}_p$-tower.

Undecidability of infinite towers of Kummer extensions of $\mathbb{F}_p(t)$

Abstract:We prove, assuming resolution of singularities in positive characteristic, an analogue of Siegel's theorem on sum of squares in positive characteristic. The method of proof combines techniques from central simple algebras with model theory and builds on work of Anscombe, Dittmann and Fehm. As an application, we show that, for each finite field $\mathbb{F}$ of odd characteristic and any positive integer $n$ coprime with the characteristic of $\mathbb{F}$, the first-order theory of the field given by the compositum of the fields generated by adjoining the $n$--th roots of all monic irreducible polynomials in $\mathbb{F}[t]$, of degree divisible by $n$ is undecidable in the language of rings with the variable $t$ as a constant.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a projective variety over a number field $K$ endowed with a height function associated to an ample line bundle on $X$. Given an algebraic extension $F$ of $K$ with a sufficiently big Northcott number, we can show that there are finitely many cycles in $X_{\bar{\mathbb{Q}}}$ of bounded degree defined over $F$. Fields $F$ with the required properties were explicitly constructed in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2107.09027" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2107.09027">arXiv:2107.09027</a> and <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2204.04446" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2204.04446">arXiv:2204.04446</a>, motivating our investigation. We point out explicit specializations to canonical heights associated to abelian varieties and selfmaps of $\mathbb{P}^n$. We apply similar methods to the study of CM-points. As a crucial tool, we introduce a refinement of Northcott's theorem.

Abstract:The genus of projective curves discretely separates decidedly different two variable algebraic relations. So, we can focus on the connected moduli M_g of genus g curves. Yet, modern applications require a data variable (function) on such curves. The resulting spaces are versions, depending on our need from this data variable, of Hurwitz spaces. A Nielsen class is a set defined by r \ge 3 conjugacy classes C in the data variable monodromy G. It gives a striking genus analog. Using Frattini covers of G, every Nielsen class produces a projective system of related Nielsen classes for any prime p dividing |G|. A nonempty (infinite) projective system of braid orbits in these Nielsen classes is an infinite (G,C) component (tree) branch. These correspond to projective systems of irreducible (dim r-3) components from {H(G_{p,k}(G),C)}_{k=0}^{\infty}, the (G,C,p) Modular Tower (MT). The classical modular curve towers {Y_1(p^{k+1})}_{k=0}^\infty (simplest case: G is dihedral, r=4, C are involution classes) are an avatar. The (weak) Main Conjecture says, if G is p-perfect, there are no rational points at high levels of a component branch. When r=4, MT levels (minus their cusps) are upper half plane quotients covering the j-line. Our topics. * Identifying component branches on a MT from g-p', p and Weigel cusp branches using the MT generalization of spin structures. * Listing cusp branch properties that imply the (weak) Main Conjecture and extracting the small list of towers that could possibly fail the conjecture. * Formulating a (strong) Main Conjecture for higher rank MTs (with examples): almost all primes produce a modular curve-like system.

An Additive Decomposition in S-Primitive Towers

Abstract:We consider the additive decomposition problem in primitive towers and present an algorithm to decompose a function in an S-primitive tower as a sum of a derivative in the tower and a remainder which is minimal in some sense. Special instances of S-primitive towers include differential fields generated by finitely many logarithmic functions and logarithmic integrals. A function in an S-primitive tower is integrable in the tower if and only if the remainder is equal to zero. The additive decomposition is achieved by viewing our towers not as a traditional chain of extension fields, but rather as a direct sum of certain subrings. Furthermore, we can determine whether or not a function in an S-primitive tower has an elementary integral without solving any differential equations. We also show that a kind of S-primitive towers, known as logarithmic towers, can be embedded into a particular extension where we can obtain a finer remainder.

Abstract:We generalize Schoof's theorem in 1986 and apply this to construct a class of Kummer extensions of the cyclotomic fields with infinite class tower. As an application, we give some number fields with a small root discriminant, which has an infinite $p$-class field tower when $p=3, 5, 7$.

Abstract:Let $p,q,l$ be three distinct prime numbers and let $N$ be a positive integer coprime to $pql$. For an integer $n\ge 0$, we define the directed graph $X_l^q(p^nN)$ whose vertices are given by isomorphism classes of elliptic curves over a finite field of characteristic $q$ equipped with a level $p^nN$ structure. The edges of $X_l^q(p^nN)$ are given by $l$-isogenies. We are interested in when the connected components of $X_l^q(p^nN)$ give rise to a tower of Galois covers as $n$ varies. We show that only in the supersingular case we do get a tower of Galois covers. We also study similar towers of isogeny graphs given by oriented supersingular curves, as introduced by Colò-Kohel, enhanced with a level structure.

Abstract:We define a congruence module $\Psi_A(M)$ associated to a surjective $\mathcal O$-algebra morphism $\lambda\colon A \to \mathcal{O}$, with $\mathcal{O}$ a discrete valuation ring, $A$ a complete noetherian local $\mathcal{O}$-algebra regular at $\mathfrak{p}$, the kernel of $\lambda$, and $M$ a finitely generated $A$-module. We establish a numerical criterion for $M$ to have a free direct summand over $A$ of positive rank. It is in terms of the lengths of $\Psi_A(M)$ and the torsion part of $\mathfrak{p}/\mathfrak{p}^2$. It generalizes results of Wiles, Lenstra, and Diamond, that deal with the case when the codimension of $\mathfrak{p}$ is zero. Number theoretic applications include integral (non-minimal) $R=\mathbb T$ theorems in situations of positive defect conditional on certain standard conjectures. Here $R$ is a deformation ring parametrizing certain Galois representations and $\mathbb T$ is a Hecke algebra. An example is a modularity lifting for 2-dimensional $\ell$-adic Galois representations over an imaginary quadratic field. The proofs combine our commutative algebra results with a generalization due to Calegari and Geraghty of the patching method of Wiles and Taylor--Wiles and level raising arguments that go back to Ribet. The results provide new evidence in favor of the intriguing, and as yet fledgling, torsion analog of the classical Langlands correspondence. We also prove unconditional integral $R=\mathbb T$ results for Hecke algebras $\mathbb T$ acting on weight one cohomology of Shimura curves over $\mathbb Q$. This leads to a torsion Jacquet--Langlands correspondence comparing integral Hecke algebras acting on weight one cohomology of Shimura curves and modular curves. In this case the cohomology has abundant torsion and so our correspondence cannot be deduced by means of the classical Jacquet--Langlands correspondence.

Abstract:We fix a monic polynomial f ¯ ( x ) ∈ F q [ x ] \bar f(x) \in \mathbb {F}_q[x] over a finite field of characteristic p p of degree relatively prime to p p , and consider the Z p ℓ \mathbb {Z}_{p^{\ell }} -Artin–Schreier–Witt tower defined by f ¯ ( x ) \bar f(x) ; this is a tower of curves ⋯ → C m → C m − 1 → ⋯ → C 0 = A 1 \cdots \to C_m \to C_{m-1} \to \cdots \to C_0 =\mathbb {A}^1 , whose Galois group is canonically isomorphic to Z p ℓ \mathbb {Z}_{p^\ell } , the degree ℓ \ell unramified extension of Z p \mathbb {Z}_p , which is abstractly isomorphic to ( Z p ) ℓ (\mathbb {Z}_p)^\ell as a topological group. We study the Newton slopes of zeta functions of this tower of curves. This reduces to the study of the Newton slopes of L L -functions associated to characters of the Galois group of this tower. We prove that, when the conductor of the character is large enough, the Newton slopes of the L L -function asymptotically form a finite union of arithmetic progressions. As a corollary, we prove the spectral halo property of the spectral variety associated to the Z p ℓ \mathbb {Z}_{p^{\ell }} -Artin–Schreier–Witt tower (over a large subdomain of the weight space). This extends the main result in a 2016 work of Davis, Wan, and Xiao from rank one case ℓ = 1 \ell =1 to the higher rank case ℓ ≥ 1 \ell \geq 1 .
Fields of rationality of automorphic representations: The case of unitary groups

Abstract:This paper examines fields of rationality in families of cuspidal automorphic representations of unitary groups. Specifically, for a fixed A and a sufficiently large family F , a small proportion of representations π ∈ F will satisfy [ Q ( π ) : Q ] ≤ A . Like earlier work of Shin and Templier, the result depends on a Plancherel equidistribution result for the local components of representations in families. An innovation of our work is an upper bound on the number of discrete series GL n ( L ) representations with small field of rationality, counted with appropriate multiplicity, which in turn depends upon an asymptotic character expansion of Murnaghan and formal degree computations of Aubert and Plymen.

On the tower factorization of integers

Abstract:Under the fundamental theorem of arithmetic, any integer $n>1$ can be uniquely written as a product of prime powers $p^a$; factoring each exponent $a$ as a product of prime powers $q^b$, and so on, one will obtain what is called the tower factorization of $n$. Here, given an integer $n>1$, we study its height $h(n)$, that is, the number of "floors" in its tower factorization. In particular, given a fixed integer $k\geq 1$, we provide a formula for the density of the set of integers $n$ with $h(n)=k$. This allows us to estimate the number of floors that a positive integer will have on average. We also show that there exist arbitrarily long sequences of consecutive integers with arbitrarily large heights.

Abstract:Abstract Rotations $$f_\alpha $$ f α of the one-dimensional torus (equipped with the normalized Lebesgue measure) by an irrational angle $$\alpha $$ α are known to be dynamical systems of rank one. This is equivalent to the property that the covering number $$F^*(f_\alpha )$$ F ∗ ( f α ) of the dynamical system is one. In other words, there exists a basis B such that for arbitrarily high h , an arbitrarily large proportion of the unit torus can be covered by the Rokhlin tower $$(f_\alpha ^kB)_{k=0}^{h-1}$$ ( f α k B ) k = 0 h - 1 . Although B can be chosen with diameter smaller than any fixed $$\varepsilon > 0$$ ε > 0 , it is not always possible to take an interval for B but this can only be done when the partial quotients of $$\alpha $$ α are unbounded. In the present paper, we ask what maximum proportion of the torus can be covered when B is the union of $$n_B \in {\mathbb {N}}$$ n B ∈ N disjoint intervals. This question has been answered in the case $$n_B =1$$ n B = 1 by Checkhova, and here we address the general situation. If $$n_B = 2$$ n B = 2 , we give a precise formula for the maximum proportion. Furthermore, we show that for fixed $$\alpha $$ α , the maximum proportion converges to 1 when $$n_B \rightarrow \infty $$ n B → ∞ . Explicit lower bounds can be given if $$\alpha $$ α has constant partial quotients. Our approach is inspired by the construction involved in the proof of the Rokhlin lemma and furthermore makes use of the three gap theorem.

Height moduli on cyclotomic stacks and counting elliptic curves over function fields

Abstract:For proper stacks, unlike schemes, there is a distinction between rational and integral points. Moreover, rational points have extra automorphism groups. We show that these distinctions exactly account for the lower order main terms appearing in precise counts of elliptic curves over function fields, answering a question of Venkatesh in this case. More generally, using the theory of twisted stable maps and the stacky height functions recently introduced by Ellenberg, Zureick-Brown, and the third author, we construct finite type moduli spaces which parametrize rational points of fixed height on a large class of stacks, so-called cyclotomic stacks. The main tool is a correspondence between rational points, twisted maps and weighted linear series. Along the way, we obtain the Northcott property as well as a generalization of Tate's algorithm for cyclotomic stacks, and compute the exact motives of these moduli spaces for weighted projective stacks.
