Abstract:Recently， spin effect in narrow gap semiconductor heterostructures has attracted much attention. However， Rashba spin effect is quite different in Ⅳ-Ⅵ asymmetric quantum wells (QWs) with various growth orientations due to their multivalley and anisotropic band structures. In this work， we calculated Rashba splitting in Pb1-ySryTe/PbTe/Pb1-xSrxTe asymmetric QWs with growth orientations ［100］，［110］ and ［111］. The results show that Rashba splitting reaches the maximum of 2.2meV when the well width of PbTe QWs with growth orientation ［100］ is 5.0nm， and two groups of Rashba splitting is obtained in PbTe and QWs with growth orientations ［110］ and ［111］， respectively， because the quantum confinement lifts off the fourfold degeneracy of the L-energy valleys. The dependences of Rashba splitting on asymmetry of QWs， well width， temperature and k∥ (the wave vactor in the plane) are also investigated. Large Rashba spin splitting may make Ⅳ-Ⅵ asymmetric QWs as a material candidate for spintronic devices.
Large Rashba Splitting in Highly Asymmetric CdTe/PbTe/PbSrTe Quantum Well Structures

Abstract:The realization of PbTe/CdTe quantum structures and determination of highly asymmetric energy band make it feasible to construct asymmetric CdTe/PbTe/Pb1−xSrxTe quantum wells (QWs) for the probe of spintronics. Contrary to HgTe/CdTe QWs, the spin-orbit interaction in the CdTe/PbTe/Pb1−xSrxTe QWs is purely Rashba and anisotropic. Rashba splittings in the asymmetric QWs with different growth orientations and electron densities are explored. For the QWs grown along [110] direction the Rashba splitting for the oblique valley is particularly large (13.7 meV). The strong Rashba effect presented in the highly asymmetric QWs provides a potential candidate for spintronic devices.
Observation of Landau Quantization and Standing Waves in HfSiS

Abstract:Recently, HfSiS was found to be a new type of Dirac semimetal with a line of Dirac nodes in the band structure. Meanwhile, Rashba-split surface states are also pronounced in this compound. Here we report a systematic study of HfSiS by scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy at low temperature and high magnetic field. The Rashba-split surface states are characterized by measuring Landau quantization and standing waves, which reveal a quasi-linear dispersive band structure. First-principles calculations based on density-functional theory are conducted and compared with the experimental results. Based on these investigations, the properties of the Rashba-split surface states and their interplay with defects and collective modes are discussed.

Abstract:We have mapped out the spin texture of a Bi/Ag surface alloy prepared on a thin Ag film by circularly polarized angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. A term proportional to ∇·A in the interaction Hamiltonian gives rise to strong surface photoexcitation, which interferes with a Rashba contribution to yield a pronounced circular dichroic effect in Bi/Ag. The dipole transition, often taken to be the only important photoexcitation mechanism, is actually negligible. A parameter-free calculation yields a dichroic pattern in excellent agreement with experiment.

Abstract:We demonstrate that sp(2) based trigonal lattice can exhibit giant Rashba splitting and two large topological gaps simultaneously. First, an effective tight binding model is developed to describe the Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC) on a real surface and give a topological phase diagram based on two independent SOC parameters. Second, based on density functional theory calculations, it is proposed that Au/Si(111)-root 3 x root 3 surface with 1/3 monolayer Bi coverage is a good material candidate to realize both giant Rashba splitting and two large topological gaps. These results would inspire great research interests for searching two-dimensional topological insulator and manipulating Rashba spin splitting through surface alloy engineering.

Abstract:Recently, a Dirac surface state (SS) was observed in Rashba semiconductor BiTeCl by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), which suggested strong inversion symmetry breaking therein, despite the absence of such symmetry breaking in existing first-principles calculations. To clarify the aforementioned conflict as well as understand the nature of such emergent phenomenon, we employ both high-field Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillation and Hall measurements to study BiTeCl single crystals. Both techniques yield consistent observation of a three-dimensional Fermi surface from a bulk state, while Dirac surface state contribution appears absent. Finally, we propose that various gating techniques could be used to explore the novel topological nature of this material.

Abstract:We demonstrate the induction of a giant Rashba-type spin-splitting on a semiconducting substrate by means of a Bi trimer adlayer on a Si(111) wafer. The in-plane inversion symmetry is broken so that the in-plane potential gradient induces a giant spin-splitting with a Rashba energy of about 140 meV, which is more than an order of magnitude larger than what has previously been reported for any semiconductor heterostructure. The separation of the electronic states is larger than their lifetime broadening, which has been directly observed with angular resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The experimental results are confirmed by relativistic first-principles calculations. We envision important implications for basic phenomena as well as for the semiconductor based technology.

Chiral Quantum well Rashba splitting in Sb monolayer on Au(111)

Abstract:We present a comprehensive investigation into the atomic and electronic structures of a single-layer Sb(110) rhombohedral crystal formed on an Au(111) substrate. Low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) reveal a pure two-dimensional (2D) Sb stripe structure, composed of a pair of Sb(110) unit cells located in a chiral configuration with mirror symmetry breaking perpendicular to the direction of the bright stripe. Based on angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements and Sb-weighted band structure from density functional theory calculations, we report the unambiguous determination of Rashba spin-orbit coupled bands from the 2D Sb film, exhibiting a chiral symmetry in the electronic structure with the crossing points located at the ${\Gamma}$ point and the X point, respectively. Moreover, From dI/dV spectra and density of states (DOS) calculations, the quantum well (QW) Rashba-type states induced by the in-plane mirror symmetry breaking in the Sb stripe structure have been identified. Orbital decomposition of the projected band structure reveals that hybridization between Sb py states and Au states modifies the spin splitting of the QW states, attributed to the intrinsic strong SOC of Au states introduced into the QW states.

Abstract:It has been shown recently that the coexistence of Van Hove singularity and geometric phase in Pb3Bi/Ge(111) as a prototypical Rashba system can result in chiral topological superconductivity [W. Qin, L. Li, and Z. Y. Zhang, Nat. Phys. 15, 796 (2019)]. Here, we use first-principles calculations to systematically investigate the structural, electronic, and topological properties of the Pb3Bi/Ge(111) alloyed systems by considering not only the configuration that harbors topological superconductivity considered previously (labeled as the T-1 phase) but also two other energetically nearly degenerate configurations with high symmetries (labeled as H-3 and T-4). We first show that all the three structural configurations have giant Rashba-type spin splittings, resulting from the strong spin-orbit coupling effect of the heavy elements (Pb, Bi) together with inversion symmetry breaking. Next, we demonstrate that each of the saddle- or paraboliclike band dispersions can lead to the emergence of Van Hove singularities, whose positions can be substantially tuned by the giant Rashba effect to the vicinity of the Fermi level. Furthermore, we reveal the existence of topological states in both the H-3 and T-4 phases, and the corresponding Rashba-induced band gaps are given by 25 and 50 meV, respectively. Given the energetic affinity of the three phases, these findings suggest the feasibility of realizing quantum phase transitions between quantum spin Hall effect and topological superconductivity within the same materials platform. The present study is expected to give new insights in searching for topological quantum states including 2D topological superconductivity based on Rashba systems.

Abstract:The electron-phonon coupling strength of the (root 3 x root 3)R30 degrees Bi/Ag(111) surface alloy is investigated by temperature-dependent angle-resolved photoemission. The electron-phonon coupling strength for the Rashba-split surface state, as expressed by the mass-enhancement parameter lambda, is found to be of the order of 0.55 with little change over the investigated binding energy range between 200 and 700 meV. This coupling is much stronger than for the clean Ag(111) surface state or for bulk Ag. It is, however, not found to increase near the the top of the band, where the density of states has a singularity.

Abstract:The electronic structure of root 3 x root 3-Sb/Si(111) reconstructed surface is measured by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. By the first time, band splitting at (Gamma) over bar and (M) over bar points in the surface Brillouin zone (SBZ) of this system is observed, which could be simply interpreted in the framework of Rashba splitting. Abstract:The electronic structure of Ag(111) quantum well films covered with a (sqrt[3]xsqrt[3]) R30 degrees Bi/Ag surface ordered alloy, which shows a Rashba spin-split surface state, is investigated with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The band dispersion of the spin-split surface state is significantly modified by the interaction with the quantum well states of Ag films. The interaction is well described by the band hybridization model, which concludes the spin polarization of the quantum well states.

Abstract:The electronic structure of Bi2Se3 is studied by angle-resolved photoemission and density functional theory. We show that the instability of the surface electronic properties, observed even in ultra-high-vacuum conditions, can be overcome via in-situ potassium deposition. In addition to accurately setting the carrier concentration, new Rashba-like spin-polarized states are induced, with a tunable, reversible, and highly stable spin splitting. Ab-initio slab calculations reveal that these Rashba state are derived from the 5QL quantum-well states. While the K-induced potential gradient enhances the spin splitting, this might be already present for pristine surfaces due to the symmetry breaking of the vacuum-solid interface.

Abstract:The electronic structure of ultrathin Ag(111) films covered with a square root(3) x square root(3)-Bi/Ag ordered alloy was investigated by means of spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Surface-state (SS) bands, spin split by the Rashba interaction, selectively couple to the quantum-well state (QWS) bands, originally spin degenerate, in the metal film. Gaps are found to open between QWS and SS with parallel spins, while free-electron-like QWS dispersions are observed for antiparallel spin configurations. The present results demonstrate that in a nonmagnetic metal film the spin degeneracy of the valence levels can be lifted by hybridization with Rashba-type SS bands.

Abstract:Spin-split Rashba bands have been exploited to efficiently control the spin degree of freedom of moving electrons, which possesses a great potential in frontier applications of designing spintronic devices and processing spin-based information. Given that intrinsic breaking of inversion symmetry and sizeable spin-orbit interaction, two-dimensional (2D) surface alloys formed by heavy metal elements exhibit a pronounced Rashba-type spin splitting of the surface states. Here, we have revealed the essential role of atomic orbital symmetry in the hexagonally warped Rashba spin-split surface state of $\sqrt{3}\times\sqrt{3} R30^{\circ}$ BiCu$_{2}$ monatomic alloy by scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) and density functional theory (DFT). From $\mathrm{d}I/\mathrm{d}U$ spectra and calculated band structures, three hole-like Rashba-split bands hybridized from distinct orbital symmetries have been identified in the unoccupied energy region. Because of the hexagonally deformed Fermi surface, quasi-particle interference (QPI) mappings have resolved scattering channels opened from interband transitions of \textit{p$_{x},$p$_{y}$}($m_{j}=1/2$) band. In contrast to the \textit{s,p$_{z}$}-derived band, the hexagonal warping predominately is accompanied by substantial out-of-plane spin polarization $S_{z}$ up to 24\% in the dispersion of \textit{p$_{x}$,p$_{y}$}($m_{j}=1/2$) band with an in-plane orbital symmetry.

Abstract:Following our previous work (Hirahara T et al 2007 Phys. Rev. B 76 153305), we have performed spin- and angle-resolved photoemission measurements at ∼120 K on ultrathin Bi films grown on a Si substrate, focusing on the split surface-state bands near the Fermi level. We found clear experimental evidence that these states show Rashba-type spin-split behavior near , but the splitting is lost near where they overlap with the bulk band projection. This can be explained as a change in the origin of the splitting from a Rashba effect to a parity effect as revealed by ab initio calculations.

Abstract:Bismuth produces different types of ordered superstructures on the InAs(100) surface, depending on the growth procedure and coverage. The (2x1) phase forms at completion of a Bi monolayer and consists of a uniformly oriented array of parallel lines of Bi dimers. Scanning tunneling and core level spectroscopies demonstrate its metallic character, in contrast with the semiconducting properties expected on the basis of the electron counting principle. The weak electronic coupling among neighboring lines gives rise to quasi one-dimensional Bi-derived bands with open contours at the Fermi level. Spin- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy reveals a giant Rashba splitting of these bands, in good agreement with ab-initio electronic structure calculations. The very high density of the dimer lines, the metallic and quasi one-dimensional band dispersion and the Rashba-like spin texture make the Bi/InAs(100)-(2x1) phase an intriguing system, where novel transport regimes can be studied.

Abstract:We report a Rashba spin splitting of a two-dimensional electron gas in the topological insulator Bi2Se3 from angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We further demonstrate its electrostatic control, and show that spin splittings can be achieved which are at least an order-of-magnitude larger than in other semiconductors. Together these results show promise for the miniaturization of spintronic devices to the nanoscale and their operation at room temperature.

Abstract:This paper summarizes our recent work on the study of quantum size effects (QSE) and novel physical properties of the Pb/Si (111) heterostructure. Two different types of samples were investigated. One is wedge-shaped Pb islands, and the other is atomically flat Pb thin films. With scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) manipulation, we observed an intriguing morphology dynamics of the islands that swings between two extreme energy states, like that in a classical pendulum. We show that the dynamics is a result of the competition between the QSE and the classical step free energy minimizing effect. For the second type of the samples, the QSE is studied in terms of thickness-dependent film stability, electronic structure and physical properties by using STM, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and transport measurement. The results consistently reveal the formation of quantum well states (QWS) due to electron confinement in the films. This size effect could greatly modify the electronic structure near the Fermi level and lead to quantum oscillations in superconductivity, electron-phonon coupling and thermal expansion. The work unambiguously demonstrates the possibility of quantum engineering of physical properties of thin films by exploiting well-controlled and thickness-dependent QSE.
