Abstract:Shape memory alloy (SMA) reinforcement is an emerging approach to efficiently strengthen structures. However, the effect of SMA on repairing the damaged structures is not clear. This study aimed to explore the availability of SMA on strengthening damaged reinforcement concrete (RC) columns through compression tests. The damaged specimens were strengthened with NiTiNb-SMA spirals, and the effect of pitch spacing was also considered. In addition, a theoretical framework was proposed to predict the ultimate bearing capacity of the strengthened damaged RC columns. Experimental results revealed that SMA strengthening can achieve a significant improvement in the compressive properties of damaged specimens, particularly in terms of strength (increase by 22%) and ductility (increase by 286%) which surpassed those of the intact ones. The strengthening effect of SMA was significantly influenced by the pitch spacing, with the lowest pitch spacing yielding the most favorable strengthening effect. Finally, the theoretical results agreed with the experimental results well (error < 6%), indicating the accuracy of the proposed theoretical framework. This study validated the effectiveness of the pre-stressed SMA spirals in strengthening the damaged RC columns.
