Abstract:Aqueous potassium-ion batteries (AKIBs), utilizing fast diffusion kinetics of K + and abundant electrode resources, are an emerging technology offering high power density and low cost. Many efforts have been made by far to enhance the electrochemical performances of AKIBs, and some encouraging milestones have been achieved. To provide a deep understanding of the progress, challenges, and opportunities of the emerging AKIBs, the recent advances in both cathode and anode materials, and electrolytes of the AKIB systems are comprehensively summarized and discussed. Additionally, the research efforts on the optimization of electrode material properties, the revealing of the reaction mechanism, the design of electrolytes, and the full cell fabrication for AKIBs are highlighted. Finally, insights into opportunities and future directions for achieving high-performance AKIBs and their applications are proposed.

Abstract:The ever-increasing demand for storing renewable energy sources calls for novel battery technologies that are of sustainably low levelized energy cost. Research into battery chemistry has evolved to a stage where a plethora of choices based on earth-abundant elements can be compared during their development. One of the emerging candidates is the nonaqueous potassium-ion battery. K-ion’s unique properties as a charge carrier have aroused intense interest in exploring high-performing cathode and anode materials for this battery. Rapid progress has been made, where leading candidates of electrodes have been proposed, i.e., hard carbon as anode and Prussian white analogues as cathode. In this new battery technology’s infancy, it is our opinion that the focus should be given to potentially scalable, inexpensive electrode materials and the understanding of their cycle-life-property correlations. It may be the ultralong cycle life that differentiates potassium-ion batteries from sodium-ion batteries in the future market.

Abstract:Rechargeable potassium-ion batteries (KIBs) are potential alternatives to lithium-ion batteries for application in large-scale energy storage systems due to their inexpensive and highly abundant resources. Recently, various anode materials have been investigated for use in KIBs, especially the traditional graphite anodes which have already been successfully applied in KIBs. In contrast, the appropriate cathode materials which are able to accommodate large K ions are urgently needed. In this review, a comprehensive summary of the latest advancements in cathode materials for non-aqueous KIBs in terms of capacity, cycle life and energy density will be presented, as well as K-storage mechanisms. In addition, various strategies to improve K-storage performance will be provided through combining insights from the study of material structures and properties and thus bring low-cost non-aqueous KIBs a step closer to application in sustainable large-scale energy storage systems.Graphical Abstract

Abstract:K-ion battery (KIB), as an alternative to traditional Li-ion battery (LIB), has drawn ever-growing research interests because of its low cost, high voltage and similar working principle to that of LIB. Emerging understanding of energy storage mechanisms of KIBs reveals, however, significant differences between KIBs and other alkaline-ion batteries, which accounts for poor electrochemical performance when the electrodes are directly adopted from other alkaline ion batteries for KIBs. It is therefore of importance to gain deep mechanistic insights into how K ions are transported and stored in KIBs. This paper is dedicated to identifying current challenges to KIBs and critically assessing recent advances in fundamental understanding of K ion storage mechanisms, including intercalation, conversion, phase transition and alloying reactions during the charge/discharge cycles. Various approaches taken to design and develop new materials for KIB components, such as anodes, cathodes and electrolytes, are compiled and their relative merits and weaknesses are evaluated from a mechanistic perspective in an effort to establish a holistic picture of how to build cost-effective and high-performance KIBs. Finally, the challenges and outlooks on further optimizing the electrochemical performance of KIBs and their potentials of real-world applications are discussed.

Abstract:The recent advances in potassium‐ion battery (KIB) electrolytes are summarized in four sections, including organic liquid electrolytes, aqueous electrolytes, ionic liquid electrolytes, and solid‐state electrolytes. The advantages and limitations of each type of electrolytes and the possible solutions to the existing problems are analyzed, providing guidance for the future development of suitable electrolytes for high‐performance KIBs. Potassium‐ion batteries (KIBs) are considered as the potential energy storage devices due to the abundant reserves and low cost of potassium. In the past decade, research on KIBs has generally focused on electrode materials. However, since electrolytes also play a key role in determining the cell performance, this review summarizes recent advances in KIB electrolytes and design strategies. Specifically, the review includes five parts. First, the organic liquid electrolyte is the most widely used type for KIBs. Its two major components, salts and solvents, have a huge impact on the formation of the solid electrolyte interphase and the performance of KIBs. Changes in salts/solvents, the introduction of additives, and the concentration increase all have a positive effect on organic liquid electrolytes. Second, the design of water‐in‐salt electrolytes can effectively widen the narrow electrochemical stability window of aqueous electrolytes. Third, despite the appealing properties, the ionic liquid electrolytes have not been widely applied due to its high cost. Fourth, the solid‐state electrolytes have drawn much attention due to high safety, and current research has been working on improving their ionic conductivity at room temperature. Lastly, perspectives are provided to support the future development of suitable electrolytes for high‐performance KIBs.

Much advance has been achieved, however, the fundamental understanding is still insufficient and challenges remain. Here, we provide a specific perspective on the development of non-aqueous Li-O-2 batteries excluding those with aqueous, ionic liquid, hybrid, and solid-state electrolytes, because non-aqueous Li-O-2 batteries possess a relatively simple configuration and the research on non-aqueous Li-O-2 batteries is the most active of all Li-O-2 batteries. The discussion will be focused on non-aqueous electrolytes, cathode catalysts, and anodes, and corresponding perspectives are provided at the end.

Abstract:Potassium-ion batteries (KIBs) are considered to be an effective alternative to lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to their abundant resources, low cost, and similar electrochemical properties of K+ to Li+, and they have a good application prospect in the field of large-scale energy storage batteries. Polymer materials play a very important role in the battery field, such as polymer electrode materials, polymer binders, and polymer electrolytes. Here in this review, we focus on the research progress of polymers in KIBs and systematically summarize the research status and achievements of polymer electrode materials, electrolytes, and binders in potassium ion batteries in recent years. Finally, based on the latest representative research of polymers in KIBs, some suggestions and prospects are put forward, which provide possible directions for future research.

Abstract:<p>Demand for energy in day to day life is increasing exponentially. However, existing energy storage technologies like lithium ion batteries cannot stand alone to fulfill future needs. In this regard, potassium ion batteries (KIBs) that utilize K ions in their charge storage mechanism have attracted considerable attention due to their unique properties and are therefore established as one of the future battery systems of interest among the scientific community. Nevertheless, the development and identification of appropriate electrode materials is very essential for practical applications. This review features the current development in KIBs electrode and electrolyte materials, the present challenges facing this technology (in the commercial aspect), and future aspects to develop fully functional KIBs. The potassium storage mechanisms, evolution of the KIBs, and the advantages and disadvantages of each category of materials are included. Additionally, various approaches to enhance the electrochemical performances of KIBs are also discussed. This review is not only an amalgamation of different viewpoints in literature, but also contains concise perspectives and strategies. Moreover, the potential emergence of a novel class of K‐based dual ion batteries is also analyzed for the first time.</p>

Abstract:Potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) are appealing alternatives to conventional lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) because of their wide potential window, fast ionic conductivity in the electrolyte, and reduced cost. However, PIBs suffer from sluggish K+ reaction kinetics in electrode materials, large volume expansion of electroactive materials, and the unstable solid electrolyte interphase. Various strategies, especially in terms of electrode design, have been proposed to address these issues. In this review, the recent progress on advanced anode materials of PIBs is systematically discussed, ranging from the design principles, and nanoscale fabrication and engineering to the structure-performance relationship. Finally, the remaining limitations, potential solutions, and possible research directions for the development of PIBs towards practical applications are presented. This review will provide new insights into the lab development and real-world applications of PIBs.

Abstract:<p>Rechargeable potassium‐ion batteries (KIBs) have demonstrated great potential as alternative technologies to the currently used lithium‐ion batteries on account of the competitive price and low redox potential of potassium which is advantageous to applications in the smart grid. As the critical component determining the energy density, appropriate cathode materials are of vital need for the realization of KIBs. Layered oxide cathodes are promising candidates for KIBs due to high reversible capacity, appropriate operating potential, and most importantly, facile and easily scalable synthesis. In light of this trend, the recent advancements and progress in layered oxides research for KIBs cathodes, covering material design, structural evolution, and electrochemical performance are comprehensively reviewed. The structure–performance correlation and some effective optimization strategies are also discussed. Furthermore, challenges and prospects of these layered cathodes are included, with the purpose of providing fresh impetus for future development of these materials for advanced energy storage systems.</p>

Abstract:In this review, the recent progress on aqueous non‐metallic ion batteries with organic electrode materials is summarized. The interaction between non‐metallic ion charge carriers and organic electrode host materials is emphasized and the design strategies toward achieving high electrochemical performance of organic electrode materials are overviewed. The future research orientation in this field is also discussed. Aqueous non‐metallic ion batteries have attracted much attention in recent years owing to their fast kinetics, long cycle life, and low manufacture cost. Organic compounds with flexible structural designability are promising electrode materials for aqueous non‐metallic ion batteries. In this review, the recent progress of organic electrode materials is systematically summarized for aqueous non‐metallic ion batteries with the focus on the interaction between non‐metallic ion charge carriers and organic electrode host materials. Both the cations (proton, ammonium ion, and methyl viologen ions) and anions (chloridion, sulfate ion, perchlorate ion, trifluoromethanesulfonate and trifluoromethanesulfonimide ion) storage are discussed. Moreover, the design strategies toward improving the comprehensive performance of organic electrode materials in aqueous non‐metallic ion batteries will be summarized. More organic electrode materials with new reaction mechanisms need to be explored to meet the diverse demands of aqueous non‐metallic ion batteries with different charge carriers in the future. This review provides insights into developing high‐performance organic electrodes for aqueous non‐metallic ion batteries.

Abstract:In this work, a significant research progress in term of the components structure, vital solid electrolyte interphase engineering, and development perspective for potassium‐ion batteries are highly summarized. Additionally, improvement strategies are put forward for the challenges in the advancement of potassium‐ion batteries and the future directions of their research are foreseen. Compared with extensively applied lithium‐ion batteries, potassium‐ion batteries (PIBs) exhibit similar working principles, comparable energy densities but low costs and thus great potential in grid‐scale energy storage applications. However, the K‐storage performance of PIBs is significantly limited by the serious structure stress in electrode materials due to the large radius of K+ as well as poor electrolyte design principles to match the novel energy storage system. This review summarizes recent advances in material design of cathode and anode electrodes as well as electrolyte engineering for the novel electrochemical K‐storage system. Especially the rational manipulation of the solid electrolyte interphase by electrolyte design to achieve satisfactory K‐storage performance is emphasized. Furthermore, the guidelines and improved strategies are proposed for developing advanced PIBs for next‐generation energy storage technologies.

Abstract:Potassium-ion batteries (KIBs) are regarded as one of the most promising replacements for lithium-ion batteries because of their low cost and high performance. Exploring suitable anode materials to stably and effectively store potassium is critical for the development of KIBs. Given their high theoretical specific capacity, cobalt-based compounds have been extensively investigated as an anode material in recent years; however, specific reviews summarizing the research progress in the application of cobalt-based compounds as anode materials for high-performance KIBs are lacking. Consequently, this review systematically summarizes the recent states of cobalt-based anode materials in KIBs starting at the potassium storage mechanism, followed by strategies and applications to improve the electrochemical performance. The current challenges are also discussed, and corresponding prospects are proposed. This work may facilitate the realization of various applications of cobalt-based compound anodes for high-performance rechargeable batteries and is expected to provide some guidance for developing other metal-based compounds for KIBs anodes.

Abstract:In the existing battery system, non-aqueous potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) have attracted considerable interest and exhibited a broad application prospect in the prospective large-scale energy storage due to the abundant and cost-effective resources, fast K-ion conductivity in electrolyte and low standard reduction potential of K+/K. After tremendous efforts for ideal electrode materials and full-cells assembly technologies, the comprehensive performance of PIBs including K-ion diffusion kinetics, K storage capacity and reversibility, has made great progress. This review features our current understanding and the development status of PIBs from the perspective of crystal, interfacial and morphological control on electrode materials for nonaqueous PIBs, including i) the correlation between the lattice structure of electrode material (interlayer spacing, lattice parameter, etc.) and the K+ storage/transfer, ii) K+ transfer/reaction kinetics in two-phase interface and the relationship between phase interface and structural stability and iii) the development status and law of the relationship between morphology and volume strain or K+/electron transfer rate. The summary and perspectives aim to address the crucial issues and explore high-performance PIBs, which may provide a guidance for other energy storage devices.
