Abstract:Potassium ion energy storage devices are competitive candidates for grid-scale energy storage applications owing to the abundancy and cost-effectiveness of potassium (K) resources, the low standard redox potential of K/K+, and the high ionic conductivity in K-salt-containing electrolytes. However, the sluggish reaction dynamics and poor structural instability of battery-type anodes caused by the insertion/extraction of large K+ ions inhibit the full potential of K ion energy storage systems. Extensive efforts have been devoted to the exploration of promising anode materials. This Review begins with a brief introduction of the operation principles and performance indicators of typical K ion energy storage systems and significant advances in different types of battery-type anode materials, including intercalation-, mixed surface-capacitive-/intercalation-, conversion-, alloy-, mixed conversion-/alloy-, and organic-type materials. Subsequently, host-guest relationships are discussed in correlation with the electrochemical properties, underlying mechanisms, and critical issues faced by each type of anode material concerning their implementation in K ion energy storage systems. Several promising optimization strategies to improve the K+ storage performance are highlighted. Finally, perspectives on future trends are provided, which are aimed at accelerating the development of K ion energy storage systems.

Abstract:Aqueous potassium-ion batteries (AKIBs), utilizing fast diffusion kinetics of K + and abundant electrode resources, are an emerging technology offering high power density and low cost. Many efforts have been made by far to enhance the electrochemical performances of AKIBs, and some encouraging milestones have been achieved. To provide a deep understanding of the progress, challenges, and opportunities of the emerging AKIBs, the recent advances in both cathode and anode materials, and electrolytes of the AKIB systems are comprehensively summarized and discussed. Additionally, the research efforts on the optimization of electrode material properties, the revealing of the reaction mechanism, the design of electrolytes, and the full cell fabrication for AKIBs are highlighted. Finally, insights into opportunities and future directions for achieving high-performance AKIBs and their applications are proposed.

Abstract:Potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) are appealing alternatives to conventional lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) because of their wide potential window, fast ionic conductivity in the electrolyte, and reduced cost. However, PIBs suffer from sluggish K+ reaction kinetics in electrode materials, large volume expansion of electroactive materials, and the unstable solid electrolyte interphase. Various strategies, especially in terms of electrode design, have been proposed to address these issues. In this review, the recent progress on advanced anode materials of PIBs is systematically discussed, ranging from the design principles, and nanoscale fabrication and engineering to the structure-performance relationship. Finally, the remaining limitations, potential solutions, and possible research directions for the development of PIBs towards practical applications are presented. This review will provide new insights into the lab development and real-world applications of PIBs.

Abstract:Advanced potassium-ion batteries have recently captured tremendous attention in the search for cost-effective and large-scale energy storage systems. On the basis of this trend, various electrode materials are proposed and assessed for potassium-ion battery (PIB). Carbon-based materials are regarded as one of the most promising anode materials of potassium-ion batteries due to their excellent chemical stability, high electrical conductivity, and environmental benignity. A comprehensive overview of the progress achieved within the application of carbon-based materials in potassium-ion batteries will be given in this chapter. The existing challenges and future research directions are also briefly discussed.

Abstract:Aprotic potassium-ion batteries (KIBs) have drawn much attention owing to their high energy density and low cost, and abundant potassium resources. The realization of electrochemical potassiation/depotassiation in commercial graphite is of great significance to the practical application of KIBs. However, some tough issues still exist, such as the huge volume expansion of the graphite anodes, the fast decay of capacity and the poor rate performance. Researchers have tried to improve the electrochemical performance of KIBs by developing other anode candidate materials, including various carbon materials, metal oxides, and transition metal compounds. To date, the majority of studies have focused on carbon materials because of their relatively simple preparation, low cost, and environmental safety. In this review, the latest research progress on carbon anode materials for KIBs is systematically summarized. The synthesis methods and the storage mechanism of the carbon anodes with excellent electrochemical performance are summarized. Research prospects for KIBs are also proposed.

Abstract:Potassium-ion batteries (KIBs) are regarded as one of the most promising replacements for lithium-ion batteries because of their low cost and high performance. Exploring suitable anode materials to stably and effectively store potassium is critical for the development of KIBs. Given their high theoretical specific capacity, cobalt-based compounds have been extensively investigated as an anode material in recent years; however, specific reviews summarizing the research progress in the application of cobalt-based compounds as anode materials for high-performance KIBs are lacking. Consequently, this review systematically summarizes the recent states of cobalt-based anode materials in KIBs starting at the potassium storage mechanism, followed by strategies and applications to improve the electrochemical performance. The current challenges are also discussed, and corresponding prospects are proposed. This work may facilitate the realization of various applications of cobalt-based compound anodes for high-performance rechargeable batteries and is expected to provide some guidance for developing other metal-based compounds for KIBs anodes.

Abstract:Potassium (K) metal is the "super star" among all the anode materials for potassium-ion batteries because of its merits such as large abundance (∼0.0017 wt %), high theoretical specific capacity (687 mAh g−1) and low electrochemical potential (−2.93 V vs. the standard hydrogen electrode, SHE). Nevertheless, challenges such as extremely high reactivity, large volume change, unstable interface and uncontrollable growth of K dendrites hinder its further development and practical application. Various effective tactics have been put forward to solve the issues of K metal anodes in recent years. Herein, we detailedly summarize the recent strategies for stable and dendrite-free K metal anodes such as designing a host, interfacial engineering, replacing pure K metal with K-based alloys, modifying liquid electrolyte and replacing liquid electrolyte with solid-state electrolyte. We also proposed some perspectives and outlooks. We believe this review can attract related researchers and provide some help for the future development of K metal anodes.

Abstract:Potassium-ion battery (KIB) represents an emerging battery technology. Here in this review, we highlight the research progress of cathode materials for KIBs in recent 2 years. Statuses of four typical cathodes, layered metal oxides, polyanion compounds, Prussian blue analogs, and organic cathodes are discussed. Electrochemical performances of the cathode materials are improved through tailoring of the composition, microstructure, and surface modification of the electrodes. Regulating electrode–electrolyte interface also brings about prominent improvement in the rate capability and cycling stability of the cathodes. In particular, we speculate that both layered metal oxides and polyanion compounds should be of great application potential as cathodes for the future KIB full cells.

Abstract:Layered oxide cathodes for potassium‐ion batteries have gained considerable attention in recent years. This review provides outline of recent research advances in layered cathodes including conceptual understanding, synthesis methods, structural characteristics, and electrochemical properties. In addition, some future research directions to further improve overall performance of layered oxide cathodes in potassium‐ion batteries are presented.To meet future energy demands, currently, dominant lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) must be supported by abundant and cost‐effective alternative battery materials. Potassium‐ion batteries (KIBs) are promising alternatives to LIBs because KIB materials are abundant and because KIBs exhibit intercalation chemistry like LIBs and comparable energy densities. In pursuit of superior batteries, designing and developing highly efficient electrode materials are indispensable for meeting the requirements of large‐scale energy storage applications. Despite using graphite anodes in KIBs instead of in sodium‐ion batteries (NIBs), developing suitable KIB cathodes is extremely challenging and has attracted considerable research attention. Among the various cathode materials, layered metal oxides have attracted considerable interest owing to their tunable stoichiometry, high specific capacity, and structural stability. Therefore, the recent progress in layered metal‐oxide cathodes is comprehensively reviewed for application to KIBs and the fundamental material design, classification, phase transitions, preparation techniques, and corresponding electrochemical performance of KIBs are presented. Furthermore, the challenges and opportunities associated with developing layered oxide cathode materials are presented for practical application to KIBs.

Abstract:The commercialization of potassium-ion batteries requires promising anodes with excellent reversible capacity and cycle stability. Graphite anodes have attracted extensive research owing to the formation of stable intercalation compounds, which also helps to focus attention on low-cost carbon-based anodes. However, the slow diffusion of potassium ion (K+) and structural damage of graphite caused by large size may lead to capacity decay. Herein, the modification strategies have been summarized, including microstructure regulation, heteroatom doping and building stable solid electrolyte interphase. And the opportunities and challenges faced by these improvement methods are proposed. Meanwhile, carbon-based materials used as hosts or conductive carriers to improve the performance of other anodes are also summarized.
Plasma-Doped Carbon-Based Anode Materials in Potassium Ion Batteries: A Review of Current and Future Prospects

Abstract:With the increasing demand for energy, finding clean, efficient, and renewable energy storage solutions is a crucial focus in today's world. In this context, potassium-ion batteries have garnered widespread research and attention as an essential solution to address environmental pollution and future energy challenges. This paper focuses on one of the key components of potassium-ion batteries - the anode materials, with a special emphasis on plasma-doped carbon-based anode materials. Initially, the significance of carbon-based anode materials in ion batteries is introduced. Subsequently, a detailed exploration is conducted on the diverse applications of plasma-doped carbon-based anode materials in lithium-ion, sodium-ion, and potassium-ion batteries. These materials demonstrate excellent electrochemical performance, significantly improving the energy density, cycle life, and stability of the batteries. Looking ahead, we will additionally discuss the optimization of synthesis methods, further enhancement of electrochemical properties, and the prospective development of large-scale production techniques. Finally, the study underscores the potential of plasma-doped carbon-based anode materials to emerge as a new trend in the field of future energy storage, making a substantial contribution to advancing sustainable energy storage technologies.

Abstract:The development of rechargeable batteries using potassium instead of lithium as charge carrier is being studied with increasing interest. Potassium ion batteries (PIBs) are considered as a promising technology for large-scale energy storage, due to the advantages of using K, such as earth-abundance and cost effectiveness. Nevertheless, research on PIBs is still in its infancy and faces numerous challenges. Among these, a primary one is to identify a suitable anode material which has multiple properties, specifically high specific capacity, long-term life cycle, fast charging, low-cost, environmental friendliness and meets safety standards. Two-dimensional (2D) materials show great potential in battery applications due to their properties, such as large specific area, enlarged interlayer distance and surface modifiability. We review the state of the art on the synthesis and application of 2D materials in PIBs, including graphene, MXenes, transition-metal dichalcogenide materials, graphene-analogous materials and porous polymer materials. The electrochemical characteristics of different materials and K+ storage mechanisms are presented, and current challenges as well as some promising approaches for the future development of PIBs are also proposed.

Abstract:Rechargeable potassium-ion batteries (KIBs) are potential alternatives to lithium-ion batteries for application in large-scale energy storage systems due to their inexpensive and highly abundant resources. Recently, various anode materials have been investigated for use in KIBs, especially the traditional graphite anodes which have already been successfully applied in KIBs. In contrast, the appropriate cathode materials which are able to accommodate large K ions are urgently needed. In this review, a comprehensive summary of the latest advancements in cathode materials for non-aqueous KIBs in terms of capacity, cycle life and energy density will be presented, as well as K-storage mechanisms. In addition, various strategies to improve K-storage performance will be provided through combining insights from the study of material structures and properties and thus bring low-cost non-aqueous KIBs a step closer to application in sustainable large-scale energy storage systems.Graphical Abstract

Abstract:Potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) have recently attracted considerable attention in electrochemical energy storage applications due to abundant and widely distributed potassium resources and encouraging intercalation chemistries with graphite, the commercial anode of lithium-ion batteries. One main challenge in PIBs, however, is to develop suitable cathode materials to accommodate the large size of K+ ions with reasonable capacity, voltage, kinetics, cycle life, cost, etc. In this review, recent advancements of cathode materials for PIBs are reviewed, covering various fundamental aspects of PIBs, and various cathode materials in terms of synthesis, structure, and electrochemical performance, such as capacity, working potential, and K-storage mechanisms. Furthermore, strategies to improve the electrochemical performance of cathode materials through increasing crystallinity, using buffering and conducting matrixes, designing nanostructures, optimizing electrolytes, and selecting binders are summarized and discussed. Finally, challenges and prospects of these materials are provided to guide future development of cathode materials in PIBs.

Abstract:The applications of potassium ion batteries (KIBs) require the development of advanced electrode materials. The rate performance and cycle stability of anode materials are critical parameters and are closely related to their K+ storage mechanisms and structural changes during cycling. This review presents an overview of the electrochemical performance and energy storage mechanisms of currently widely studied anodes for KIBs, including carbon-based, alloy-based, and organic-based anodes. This mini-review covers the emerging operando protocols that are applied to the in-depth mechanistic study of the KIBs, and we hope it will provide guidelines for the design of advanced anodes for KIB technology and hence accelerate the commercialization of KIBs as competitive energy storage devices.

Abstract:The ever-increasing demand for storing renewable energy sources calls for novel battery technologies that are of sustainably low levelized energy cost. Research into battery chemistry has evolved to a stage where a plethora of choices based on earth-abundant elements can be compared during their development. One of the emerging candidates is the nonaqueous potassium-ion battery. K-ion’s unique properties as a charge carrier have aroused intense interest in exploring high-performing cathode and anode materials for this battery. Rapid progress has been made, where leading candidates of electrodes have been proposed, i.e., hard carbon as anode and Prussian white analogues as cathode. In this new battery technology’s infancy, it is our opinion that the focus should be given to potentially scalable, inexpensive electrode materials and the understanding of their cycle-life-property correlations. It may be the ultralong cycle life that differentiates potassium-ion batteries from sodium-ion batteries in the future market.
