Abstract:Vanadium diselenide (VSe2), a member of the transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) family, is emerging as a promising twodimensional (2D) candidate for the electronic and spintronic device with exotic properties including charge/spin density wave and ferromagnetism. The bulk crystal VSe2 exists in a crystallographic form of 1T-phase with metallic behavior. In this paper, we report a structural phase transition of multilayer VSe2 from 1T to 2H through annealing at 650 K, accompanying a metal-insulator transition. We observe that the 2H-phase is more thermodynamically favorable than the 1T-phase at 2D.

Abstract:Monolayer MnCX 3 metal–carbon trichalcogenides have been investigated by using the first-principle calculations. The compounds show half-metallic ferromagnetic characters. Our results reveal that their electronic and magnetic properties can be altered by applying uniaxial or biaxial strain. By tuning the strength of the external strain, the electronic bandgap and magnetic ordering of the compounds change and result in a phase transition from the half-metallic to the semiconducting phase. Furthermore, the vibrational and thermodynamic stability of the two-dimensional structure has been verified by calculating the phonon dispersion and molecular dynamics. Our study paves guidance for the potential applications of these two mono-layers in the future for spintronics and straintronics devices.

Abstract:The discovery of various two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials with different phases is fundamentally and technologically intriguing, leading to diverse physical and chemical properties for expanded applications. Herein, we performed systematic first-principles calculations to explore a series of single-layer MXenes (M2 X: M=Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Zr, Nb, Mo, Hf, Ta; X=C, N). The new H-phase MXenes are firstly predicted, which are compared with the usually synthesized MXenes named as T-phase MXenes on their structure and electronic properties. Semiconducting-metallic transitions could be realized by T-/H- phase transition for Sc2 CO2 , Sc2 CO2 H2 , and Ti2 CO2 . Besides, the differences between MXenes and MoS2 on energy storage are discussed. Our work will provide valuable directions for the discovery of new MXene phases and give a systematic understanding of 2D MXenes.

Abstract:Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) possess a large number of two‐dimensional (2D) materials with novel physical and chemical properties and hold great potential applications in electronic devices, optical devices as well as catalysts. TMDs usually have poly‐phases, such as 2H, 3R and 1T. Chemical and physical properties, including electrical conductivity, superconductivity, magnetism and catalytic activity, are different for different phases of TMDs. Therefore, great efforts have been made to obtain a specific pure phase of 2D TMD materials. Here, we review the recent phase engineering research for 2D TMDs, including ion insertion, alloying, temperature, defects, strain and electric field.

Abstract:Although two-dimensional (2D) atomic layers, such as transition-metal chalcogenides, have been widely synthesized using techniques such as exfoliation 1 – 3 and vapour-phase growth 4 , 5 , it is still challenging to obtain phase-controlled 2D structures 6 – 8 . Here we demonstrate an effective synthesis strategy via the progressive transformation of non-van der Waals (non-vdW) solids to 2D vdW transition-metal chalcogenide layers with identified 2H (trigonal prismatic)/1T (octahedral) phases. The transformation, achieved by exposing non-vdW solids to chalcogen vapours, can be controlled using the enthalpies and vapour pressures of the reaction products. Heteroatom-substituted (such as yttrium and phosphorus) transition-metal chalcogenides can also be synthesized in this way, thus enabling a generic synthesis approach to engineering phase-selected 2D transition-metal chalcogenide structures with good stability at high temperatures (up to 1,373 kelvin) and achieving high-throughput production of monolayers. We anticipate that these 2D transition-metal chalcogenides will have broad applications for electronics, catalysis and energy storage.

Abstract:Layered materials with phase transitions, such as charge density wave (CDW) and magnetic and dipole ordering, have potential to be exfoliated into monolayers and few-layers and then become a large and important subfamily of two-dimensional (2D) materials. Benefitting from enriched physical properties from the collective interactions, long-range ordering, and related phase transitions, as well as the atomic thickness yet having nondangling bonds on the surface, 2D phase-transition materials have vast potential for use in new-concept and functional devices. Here, potential 2D phase-transition materials with CDWs and magnetic and dipole ordering, including transition metal dichalcogenides, transition metal halides, metal thio/selenophosphates, chromium silicon/germanium tellurides, and more, are introduced. The structures and experimental phase-transition properties are summarized for the bulk materials and some of the obtained monolayers. In addition, recent experimental progress on the synthesis and measurement of monolayers, such as 1T-TaS2 , CrI3 , and Cr2 Ge2 Te6 , is reviewed.

Abstract:2D transition metal dichalcogenides (2D-TMDs) and their unique polymorphic features such as the semiconducting 1H and quasi-metallic 1T' phases exhibit intriguing optical and electronic properties, which can be used in novel electronic and photonic device applications. With the favorable quasi-metallic nature of 1T'-phase 2D-TMDs, the 1H-to-1T' phase engineering processes are an immensely vital discipline exploited for novel device applications. Here, a high-yield 1H-to-1T' phase transition of monolayer-MoS2 on Cu and monolayer-WSe2 on Au via an annealing-based process is reported. A comprehensive experimental and first-principles study is performed to unravel the underlying mechanism and derive the general trends for the high-yield phase transition process of 2D-TMDs on metallic substrates. While each 2D-TMD possesses different intrinsic 1H-1T' energy barriers, the option of metallic substrates with higher chemical reactivity plays a significantly pivotal role in enhancing the 1H-1T' phase transition yield. The yield increase is achieved via the enhancement of the interfacial hybridizations by the means of increased interfacial binding energy, larger charge transfer, shorter interfacial spacing, and weaker bond strength. Fundamentally, this study opens up the field of 2D-TMD/metal-like systems to further scientific investigation and research, thereby creating new possibilities for 2D-TMDs-based device applications.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials with multiphase, multielement crystals such as transition metal chalcogenides (TMCs) (based on V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Cd, Pt and Pd) and transition metal phosphorous chalcogenides (TMPCs) offer a unique platform to explore novel physical phenomena. However, the synthesis of a single-phase/single-composition crystal of these 2D materials via chemical vapour deposition is still challenging. Here we unravel a competitive-chemical-reaction-based growth mechanism to manipulate the nucleation and growth rate. Based on the growth mechanism, 67 types of TMCs and TMPCs with a defined phase, controllable structure and tunable component can be realized. The ferromagnetism and superconductivity in FeX y can be tuned by the y value, such as superconductivity observed in FeX and ferromagnetism in FeS 2 monolayers, demonstrating the high quality of as-grown 2D materials. This work paves the way for the multidisciplinary exploration of 2D TMPCs and TMCs with unique properties.

Abstract:Gate-controlled ionic intercalation in the van der Waals gap of 2D layered materials can induce novel phases and unlock new properties. However, this strategy is often unsuitable for densely packed 2D non-layered materials. The non-layered rhombohedral Cr2S3 is an intrinsic heterodimensional superlattice with alternating layers of 2D CrS2 and 0D Cr1/3. Here an innovative chemical vapor deposition method is reported, utilizing strategically modified metal precursors to initiate entirely new seed layers, yields ultrathin inclined-standing grown 2D Cr2S3 nanosheets with edge instead of face contact with substrate surfaces, enabling rapid all-dry transfer to other substrates while ensuring high crystal quality. The unconventional ordered vacancy channels within the 0D Cr1/3 layers, as revealed by cross-sectional scanning transmission electron microscope, permitting the insertion of Li+ ions. An unprecedented metal-insulator transition, with a resistance modulation of up to six orders of magnitude at 300 K, is observed in Cr2S3-based ionic field-effect transistors. Theoretical calculations corroborate the metallization induced by Li-ion intercalation. This work sheds light on the understanding of growth mechanism, structure-property correlation and highlights the diverse potential applications of 2D non-layered Cr2S3 superlattice.

Abstract:Two-dimensional metal chalcogenides (2D-MCs) with complex interactions are usually rich in phase transition behavior, such as superconductivity, charge density wave (CDW), and magnetic transitions, which hold great promise for the exploration of exciting physical properties and functional applications. Interlayer chemical modulation, as a renewed surface modification method, presents congenital advantages to regulate the phase transitions of 2D-MCs due to its confined space, strong guest–host interactions, and local and reversible modulation without destructing the host lattice, whereby new phenomena and functionalities can be produced. Herein, recent achievements in the interlayer chemical modulation of 2D-MCs are reviewed from the aspects of superconducting transition, CDW transition, semiconductor-to-metal transition, magnetic phase transition, and lattice transition. We systematically discuss the roles of charge transfer, spin coupling, and lattice strain on the modulation of phase transitions in the guest–host architectures of 2D-MCs established by electrochemical intercalation, solution-processed intercalation, and solid-state intercalation. New physical phenomena, new insight into the mechanism of phase transitions, and derived functional applications are presented. Finally, a prospectus of the challenges and opportunities of interlayer chemical modulation for future research is pointed out.

Abstract:Metallic-phase transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) exhibit unusual physicochemical properties compared with their semiconducting counterparts. However, they are thermodynamically unstable to access and it is even more challenging to construct their metastable-phase heterostructures. Herein, we demonstrate a general solution protocol for phase-controlled synthesis of distorted octahedral 1T WS2-based (1T structure denotes an octahedral coordination for W atom) multidimensional hybrid nanostructures from two-dimensional (2D), one-dimensional (1D), and zero-dimensional (0D) templates. This is realized by tuning the reactivity of tungsten precursor and the interaction between crystal surface and ligands. As a conceptual study on crystal phase- and dimensionality-dependent applications, we find that the three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical architectures achieved, comprising 1T WS2 and 2D Ni3S4, are very active and stable for catalyzing hydrogen evolution. Our results open up a new way to rationally design phase-controlled nanostructures with increased complexity and more elaborate functionalities. [GRAPHICS] .

Abstract:Unprecedented two-dimensional (2D) metal chloride structures were grown between sheets of bilayer graphene through intercalation of metal and chlorine atoms. Numerous spatially confined 2D phases of AlCl3 and CuCl2 distinct from their typical bulk forms were found, and the transformations between these new phases under the electron beam were directly observed by in situ scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). Our density functional theory calculations confirmed the metastability of the atomic structures derived from the STEM experiments and provided insights into the electronic properties of the phases, which range from insulators to semimetals. Additionally, the co-intercalation of different metal chlorides was found to create completely new hybrid systems; in-plane quasi-1D AlCl3/CuCl2 heterostructures were obtained. The existence of polymorphic phases hints at the unique possibilities for fabricating new types of 2D materials with diverse electronic properties confined between graphene sheets.This article is protected by copyright. A Novel Class of Two-Dimensional Materials: Transition Metal Dichalcogenides

Abstract:This chapter discusses the atomic structures, followed by the synthesis and processing, whereas some properties and the applications. The structures or phases present in 2D TMDs are governed by many factors, including the relative stability at different temperatures as well as the synthesis/thermal treatment histories. Selected area electron diffraction shows the crystal structures in reciprocal space, while in transmission electron microscopic, especially scanning transmission electron microscopy images, the spatial and elemental information on a single atomic scale can be directly identified. Then, the exfoliation starts by removing the scotch tape, and repeated mechanical exfoliation eventually achieves monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). The lack of reliable and reproducible synthesis and lack of deep understandings of some fundamental physical and chemical properties originated from their complex and nontrivial electronic structures in 2D TMDs are the most desirable and urgent targets for the whole research societies. A lot of 2D materials are originated from the vdW layered materials, which consist of the stacking of 2D layered building blocks.

Abstract:It is the nature of crystals to exist in different polymorphs. The recent emergence of two-dimensional (2D) materials has evoked the discovery of a number of new crystal phases that are different from their bulk structures at ambient conditions, and revealed novel structure-dependent properties, which deserve in-depth understanding and further exploration. In this contribution, we review the recent development of crystal phase control in 2D materials, including group V and VI. transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), group IVA metal chalcogenides and noble metals. For each group of materials, we begin with introducing the various existing crystal phases and their structure-related properties, followed by a detailed discussion on factors that influence these crystal structures and thus the possible strategies for phase control. Finally, after summarizing the whole paper, we present the challenges and opportunities in this research direction.

Abstract:Over the past decade, significant advancements have been made in phase engineering of two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), thereby allowing controlled synthesis of various phases of TMDCs and facile conversion between them. Recently, there has been emerging interest in TMDC coexisting phases, which contain multiple phases within one nanostructured TMDC. By taking advantage of the merits from the component phases, the coexisting phases offer enhanced performance in many aspects compared with single-phase TMDCs. Herein, this review article thoroughly expounds the latest progress and ongoing efforts on the syntheses, properties, and applications of TMDC coexisting phases. The introduction section overviews the main phases of TMDCs (2H, 3R, 1T, 1T', 1Td), along with the advantages of phase coexistence. The subsequent section focuses on the synthesis methods for coexisting phases of TMDCs, with particular attention to local patterning and random formations. Furthermore, on the basis of the versatile properties of TMDC coexisting phases, their applications in magnetism, valleytronics, field-effect transistors, memristors, and catalysis are discussed. Lastly, a perspective is presented on the future development, challenges, and potential opportunities of TMDC coexisting phases. This review aims to provide insights into the phase engineering of 2D materials for both scientific and engineering communities and contribute to further advancements in this emerging field.

Abstract:Layered metal chalcogenides, as a "rich" family of 2D materials, have attracted increasing research interest due to the abundant choices of materials with diverse structures and rich electronic characteristics. Although the common metal chalcogenide phases such as 2H and 1T have been intensively studied, many other unusual phases are rarely explored, and some of these show fascinating behaviors including superconductivity, ferroelectrics, ferromagnetism, etc. From this perspective, the unusual phases of metal chalcogenides and their characteristics, as well as potential applications are introduced. First, the unusual phases of metal chalcogenides from different classes, including transition metal dichalcogenides, magnetic element-based chalcogenides, and metal phosphorus chalcogenides, are discussed, respectively. Meanwhile, their excellent properties of different unusual phases are introduced.
