Abstract:Based on density functional theory calculations and elemental mutation, this paper proposes a novel two-dimensional AlP3 allotrope, realized by monolayer δ-AlP3. Its good stability benefits from its low cohesive energy of -3.59 eV/atom, absence of imaginary phonon frequency, and high melting point (∼1100 K). Monolayer δ-AlP3 possesses a strain-tunable direct bandgap of 0.74 eV and presents obvious anisotropy along with electron mobility. Its electron mobility can reach up to 4763.14 cm2 V-1 s-1 and 1006.01 cm2 V-1 s-1 along a-direction and b-direction respectively, significantly higher than those of MoS2 (∼200 cm2 V-1 s-1) and δ-SnS (1.25 × 103 cm2 V-1 s-1). Calculated absorption coefficients reach up to the order of ∼5×105 cm-1 in the visible-light region and this level retains even under strain, indicating the highly efficient sunlight harvesting of monolayer δ-AlP3. Our calculations reveal that monolayer δ-AlP3 is an excellent gas sensor with high selectivity and sensitivity toward NO2. Particularly, for nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR), 27 transition metal atoms could be stably embedded in δ-AlP3 and efficiently activate N2 molecules through the "acceptance-donation" mechanism. After systematic computational screening and comprehensive evaluation for all TM/δ-AlP3 candidates, Re/δ-AlP3 stands out with the best NRR catalytic performance, which desires from its high activity (limiting potential of -0.56 eV) and outstanding HER suppression (theoretical faradic efficiency of 99.90%). This study could potentially widen the understanding of opto-electronics and single-atom electrocatalysis and also contribute to the design of novel two-dimensional materials.
