Abstract:In this paper we develop a theory of Patterson--Sullivan measures associated to coarse cocycles of convergence groups. This framework includes Patterson-Sullivan measures associated to the Busemann cocycle on the geodesic boundary of a Gromov hyperbolic metric spaces and Patterson-Sullivan measures on flag manifolds associated to Anosov (or more general transverse) subgroups of semisimple Lie groups, as well as more examples. Under some natural geometric assumptions on the coarse cocycle, we prove existence, uniqueness, and ergodicity results.

Abstract:We study Patterson–Sullivan measures for a class of discrete subgroups of higher rank semisimple Lie groups, called transverse groups, whose limit set is well-defined and transverse in a partial flag variety. This class of groups includes both Anosov and relatively Anosov groups, as well as all discrete subgroups of rank one Lie groups. We prove an analogue of the Hopf–Tsuji–Sullivan dichotomy and then use this dichotomy to prove a variant of Burger's Manhattan Curve Theorem. We also use the Patterson–Sullivan measures to obtain conditions for when a subgroup has critical exponent strictly less than the original transverse group. These gap results are new even for Anosov groups.

Abstract:For all Zarski dense Anosov subgroups of a semisimple real algebraic group, we prove that their limit sets are Ahlfors regular for intrinsic conformal premetrics. As a consequence, we obtain that a Patterson-Sullivan measure is equal to the Hausdorff measure if and only if the associated linear form is symmetric. We also discuss several applications, including analyticity of $(p,q)$-Hausdorff dimensions on the Teichmüller spaces, new upper bounds on the growth indicator, and $L^2$-spectral properties of associated locally symmetric manifolds.

Abstract:We prove that non-elementary hyperbolic groups grow exponentially more quickly than their infinite index quasiconvex subgroups. The proof uses the classical tools of automatic structures and Perron–Frobenius theory. We also extend the main result to relatively hyperbolic groups and cubulated groups. These extensions use the notion of growth tightness and the work of Dahmani, Guirardel and Osin on rotating families.

For a Zariski dense Anosov subgroup $\Gamma<G$ with respect to a parabolic subgroup $P_\theta$, we prove that any $\Gamma$-Patterson-Sullivan measure charges no mass on any proper subvariety of $G/P_\theta$. More generally, we prove that for a Zariski dense $\theta$-transverse subgroup $\Gamma<G$, any $(\Gamma, \psi)$-Patterson-Sullivan measure charges no mass on any proper subvariety of $G/P_\theta$, provided the $\psi$-Poincaré series of $\Gamma$ diverges at $s=1$. Abstract:We introduce the notion of dynamic asymptotic dimension growth for actions of discrete groups on compact spaces, and more generally for locally compact étale groupoids with compact unit space. Using the work of Bartels, Lück, and Reich to bridge our notion for group actions with asymptotic dimension growth for groups, thus providing many concrete examples for our notion. Moreover, we show that the asymptotic dimension growth for a discrete metric space of bounded geometry is equivalent to the dynamic asymptotic dimension growth for its associated coarse groupoid, hence deducing that the coarse groupoid with subexponential dynamic asymptotic dimension growth is amenable. More generally, every $\sigma$-compact locally compact Hausdorff étale groupoid with compact unit space having dynamic asymptotic dimension growth at most $x^{\alpha}$ $(0<\alpha<1)$ is amenable.

Abstract:The author was recently able to provide a cohomological interpretation of Tate's Riemann-Roch formula for number fields using some new harmonic analysis objects, ghost-spaces. When trying to investigate these objects in general, we realized the importance of functions and measures on locally compact abelian groups that are both positive and positive-definite at the same time. It looks like this class of functions and measures was not systematically studied before. The goal of this paper is to partially fill in this gap. We answer some of the natural questions involving these functions and measures, especially those that satisfy some extra integrability conditions. We also study some operations and constructions involving these functions and measures. There are several very interesting open questions, that we are only able to point out at this moment. In particular, the structure of the cone of such functions is not clear even when the group is just $\R.$

Abstract:In this paper, we study the growth of confined subgroups through boundary actions of groups with contracting elements. We establish that the growth rate of a confined subgroup is strictly greater than half of the ambient growth rate in groups with purely exponential growth. Along the way, several results are obtained on the Hopf decomposition for boundary actions of subgroups with respect to conformal measures. In particular, we prove that confined subgroups are conservative, and examples of subgroups with nontrivial Hopf decomposition are constructed. We show a connection between Hopf decomposition and quotient growth and provide a dichotomy on quotient growth of Schreier graphs for subgroups in hyperbolic groups.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce a notion of Poincaré exponent for isometric representations of discrete groups on Hilbert spaces. Similarly as growth exponents control the geometry this exponent is shown to control the size of spectral gaps. Following similar ideas as Patterson and Sullivan it is used in the case of negatively curved groups to construct weakly contained boundary representations reflecting the spectral properties of the original representation analogously as complementary series representations in the case of semi-simple Lie groups. This is exploited to deduced sharp estimates on spectral invariants. A quantitive property (T) á la Cowling is also established proving uniform bound on the mixing rate of representations of hyperbolic groups with property (T). Along the way some properties of boundary representations are discussed. A original characterisation of the positivity of the so-called Knapp-Stein operators and certain fusion rules on the boundary complementary series representations are established.

Abstract:This paper develops a theory of conformal density at infinity for groups with contracting elements. We start by introducing a class of convergence boundary encompassing many known hyperbolic-like boundaries, on which a detailed study of conical points and Myrberg points is carried out. The basic theory of conformal density is then established, including the Sullivan shadow lemma and Hopf-Tsuji-Sullivan theorem. This gives a unification of the theory of conformal density on the Gromov and Floyd boundary for (relatively) hyperbolic groups, the visual boundary for rank-1 CAT(0) groups, and Thurston boundary for mapping class groups. Besides that, the conformal density on the horofunction boundary provides a new important example of our general theory. At last, we present applications towards the co-growth problem of divergent groups, measure theoretical results for CAT(0) groups and mapping class groups.

Abstract:We give a generalization to convex co-compact semigroups of a beautiful theorem of Patterson-Sullivan, telling that the critical exponent (that is the exponential growth rate) equals the Hausdorff dimension of the limit set (that is the smallest closed non-empty invariant subset), for a isometries discrete group of a proper hyperbolic space with compact boundary. We obtains several others corollaries, such that the lower semi-continuity of the entropy, the fact that the critical exponent of a separate semigroup, that is defined as an upper limit, is in fact a true limit, and we obtain the existence of "big" Schottky sub-semigroups in discrete groups of isometries.

Abstract:We continue our study of the perfect kernel of the space of transitive actions of Baumslag-Solitar groups by investigating high transitivity. We show that actions of finite phenotype are never highly transitive, except when the phenotype is $1$, in which case high transitivity is actually generic. In infinite phenotype, high transitivity is generic, except when |m|=|n|$ where it is empty. We also reinforce the dynamical properties of the action by conjugation on the perfect kernel that we had established in our first paper, replacing topological transitivity by high topological transitivity.

Abstract:We show that some classical results on expander graphs imply growth results on normal subsets in finite simple groups. As one application, it is shown that given a nontrivial normal subset $ A $ of a finite simple group $ G $ of Lie type of bounded rank, we either have $ G \setminus \{ 1 \} \subseteq A^2 $ or $ |A^2| \geq |A|^{1+\epsilon} $, for $ \epsilon > 0 $. This improves a result of Gill, Pyber, Short and Szabó, and partially resolves a question of Pyber from the Kourovka notebook. We also propose a variant of Gowers' trick for two subsets, and give applications to products of large subsets in groups of Lie type, improving some results of Larsen, Shalev and Tiep.
