Abstract:Gas sensors with high performance and low energy consumption are necessary for system integration in the environment monitoring of explosives. High-performance room-temperature hydrogen sulfide (H2S) gas sensors were fabricated based on the hybrids of tungsten oxide (WO3)/reduced graphene oxide (rGO). WO3 nanocubes modified with different contents of rGO were synthesized by acid-based hydrothermal method. The optimal amount of rGO in the composite is 5 wt%, at which the room-temperature operating sensor presents the highest sensitivity of approximately 32.7 to 500 ppb H2S, a fast recovery time of ~ 180 s, as well as an excellent sensing selectivity. The overall improvement in sensing performances demonstrated an important progress made in H2S sensor fabrication for portable and real-time gas detection. The improved gas-sensing performance is attributed to the large specific surface area of the WO3 nanocubes, the formation of WO3/rGO heterojunctions, and the enhanced electron transfer efficiency.

Abstract:Gas sensors have received extensive attractions due to their critical roles in environmental monitoring, industry manufacture and human safety. This paper for the first time introduces carbon-gold nanocomposites on a reduced graphene oxide based electrochemical gas sensor for high sensitive gas detection. Carbon-gold nano-composites (CGNs) were synthesized by glucose carbonization and gold nanoparticles deposition using the hydrothermal method. Reduced graphene oxide (RGO) was electrochemically deposited on a screen-printed gold electrode with subsequent modification of CGNs. To achieve long lifetime and good stability, thin-film room temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) was utilized as the electrolyte featuring negligible evaporation and large potential window, thus implementing the high sensitive RTIL-based electrochemical gas sensor. The amplification effect of RGO and CGNs modification was investigated using cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry and transient double potential amperometry (DPA), which reveals the significant enhancement of sensor performance by synergic application of RGO and CGNs. The sensor was calibrated for oxygen detection from 0.42% to 21% with good sensitivity and linearly. The reproducibility of the sensor using chronoamperometry and transient DPA was also studied with excellent reproducibility. The study paves a new way to implementing high sensitive electrochemical gas sensors for rapid monitoring of gas exposure.

Abstract:Tungsten oxide (WO3) has been intensely investigated as an important gas-sensing materials. Here the sensitive and selective H2S gas sensors based on WO3 quantum dots that were synthesized via a colloidal process using WCl6 ethanol solutions mixed with oleic acid and oleylamine were demonstrated. The solution processability of the colloidal WO3 quantum dots enabled a room-temperature sensor fabrication without high-temperature sintering. The optimal sensor response toward 50 ppm of H2S is 57 with the response time of 47 s, and the response was fully recoverable upon H2S release at 80 degrees C. The sensing mechanism was discussed by using first-principles calculation based on density functional theory (DFT). Their highly sensitive and fast response at lower operating temperature, combined with the benefit of ease fabrication, make the colloidal tungsten oxide quantum dots highly attractive for the construction of low cost gas sensor with reduced power consumption. Abstract:A tin oxide (SnO2) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) hybrid composite gas sensor for high-performance carbon dioxide (CO2) gas detection at room temperature was studied. Since it can be used independently from a heater, it emerges as a promising candidate for reducing the complexity of device circuitry, packaging size, and fabrication cost; furthermore, it favors integration into portable devices with a low energy density battery. In this study, SnO2-rGO was prepared via an in-situ chemical reduction route. Dedicated material characterization techniques including field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were conducted. The gas sensor based on the synthesized hybrid composite was successfully tested over a wide range of carbon dioxide concentrations where it exhibited excellent response magnitudes, good linearity, and low detection limit. The synergistic effect can explain the obtained hybrid gas sensor’s prominent sensing properties between SnO2 and rGO that provide excellent charge transport capability and an abundance of sensing sites.

Abstract:SnO2 quantum wire/reduced graphene oxide nanocomposites (SnO2 QW/rGO) were synthesized by a facile one-step hydrothermal method with rGO and SnCl4.5H(2)O as the precursors. The SnO2 QW/rGO nanocomposites well-dispersed in ethanol were spin-coated onto ceramics substrates to construct chemiresistive gas sensors. The H2S-sensing isotherm curves were obtained based on the real-time response curves of the SnO2 QW/rGO gas sensors when operated at different temperatures ranging from 30 degrees C to 70 degrees C, from which the adsorbing/sensing performance of the specific materials were extracted and the kinetic parameters (such as response rate constant k and activation energy Ea) of the sensing-materials were quantitatively modeled. The H2S-sensing mechanism was found to follow Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-first-order model. Compared to pure SnO2 QW sensors, the SnO2 QW/rGO gas sensors exhibited higher sensitivity and faster response rate toward" H2S, which was attributed to its lower activation energy. The SnO2 QW/rGO gas sensors can even detect H2S at room temperature, highly attractive for the detection of H2S detection with lower power consumption. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The attention toward cost-effective and high-performance H2S sensors is increasing due to the growing need for physical health and environmental monitoring. In this paper, Ag/WO3/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanocomposites were synthesized by using a microwave-assisted gas–liquid interfacial method. Nanomaterials with different Ag doping contents were successfully prepared with AgNO3 as an additive. The Ag/WO3/rGO sensors exhibit remarkable selectivity toward H2S, and the gas sensing performances of Ag-doped WO3/rGO gas sensors are significantly better than those of WO3/rGO. At 150 °C, the response value of the 10 wt % Ag/WO3/rGO gas sensor to 100 ppm H2S is 204.5, which is 7 times higher than that of WO3/rGO, and the response/recovery time of the sensor is 9/49 s, respectively. Additionally, the gas sensing performance of the sensor is further enhanced under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. The response value is enhanced to 685.8, which is 3 times higher than that without UV irradiation, and the response/recovery time is reduced to 8/38 s, respectively. The sensing mechanism is also discussed. This work offers a potential application for H2S detection in environmental monitoring and smart healthcare.

Abstract:High selectivity to specific analyte is essential for chemical sensors but difficult to achieve. For most chemical sensors, although the response to the target analyte can be more significant than interference analytes, they still show obvious responses to the interference analytes. Here, highly selective chemical sensors are developed with negligible responses to other interference vapors. Instead of the widely investigated electronically conductive metal-organic frameworks (EC-MOFs), ionically conductive MOFs (IC-MOFs) are used as the sensing materials, and the unique interaction between the ion charge carrier and the analyte is utilized to achieve high sensing selectivity. Through the modulation of the metal nodes (Cu, Co, Ni, Zn, Mg) and organic ligands (H2TCPP, H2THPP, H4BTEC), sensor arrays based on a set of IC-MOFs are fabricated and achieve highly selective detection toward volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs). H2S and CH3SH can be selectively detected at concentrations down to 1 ppb and 1 ppm, respectively. The facile preparation and low cost endow the device with disposability. These results suggest new approaches for the development of highly selective chemical sensors.

Abstract:New hydrophilic 2D graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets with various oxygen functional groups were employed to maintain high sensitivity in highly unfavorable environments (extremely high humidity, strong acidic or basic). Novel one-headed polymer optical fiber sensor arrays using hydrophilic GO and hydrophobic reduced graphene oxide (rGO) were carefully designed, leading to the selective sensing of volatile organic gases for the first time. The two physically different surfaces of GO and rGO could provide the sensing ability to distinguish between tetrahydrofuran (THF) and dichloromethane (MC), respectively, which is the most challenging issue in the area of gas sensors. The eco-friendly physical properties of GO allowed for faster sensing and higher sensitivity when compared to previous results for rGO even under extreme environments of over 90% humidity, making it the best choice for an environmentally friendly gas sensor.
Synergy of Two Intermolecular Hydrogen Bonds Promotes Highly Sensitive and Selective Room-Temperature Dimethyl Methylphosphonate Sensing: A Case of rGO-Based Gas Sensors

Abstract:The development of room-temperature chemiresistive gas sensors with low limit of detection, high sensitivity, and selectivity for dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP) detection remains a challenge. Herein, a synergy of the two intermolecular hydrogen bond-promoted approach was proposed to fabricate a room-temperature DMMP sensor with enhanced performances. As a proof of concept, ternary <i>p</i>-hexafluoroisopropanol phenyl (HFIP) functionalized polypyrrole-reduced graphene oxide hybrids (HFIP-PPy-rGO) were rationally designed. During the sensing process, rGO serves as a conductive carrier, ensuring that the sensors operate at room temperature, and both HFIP and PPy act as adsorption sites for DMMP through hydrogen bonding interactions. As expected, the HFIP-PPy-rGO sensor exhibits high selectivity and sensitivity to DMMP. Besides, the HFIP-PPy-rGO sensor also possesses excellent linear response to DMMP and long-term stability. Experimental results and quartz crystal microbalance measurements prove that the specific recognition of DMMP is realized by forming two intermolecular hydrogen bonds between HFIP and DMMP, as well as PPy and DMMP. Additionally, the introduction of HFIP groups also contributes to adjusting device conductivity, enhancing signal conversion function. To put the DMMP sensor into potential practical application, the obvious sensing response to different DMMP concentrations in soil was confirmed, and a wireless detection system was built to realize real-time monitoring of DMMP concentrations in the surroundings. Overall, this study provides a facile and practical solution for improving the sensing performance of room-temperature sensors based on the hydrogen bond theory.

Abstract:Formaldehyde (HCHO) is a major indoor pollutant that is extremely harmful to human health even at ppb-level. Meanwhile, ppb-level HCHO is also a potential disease marker in the exhalation of patients with respiratory diseases. Higher humidity resistance and lower practical limit of detection (pLOD) both have to be pursued for practical HCHO sensors. In this work, by assembling indium oxide (In2O3) and fluorinated dipole modified reduced graphene oxide (rGO), we prepared a high-performance room temperature HCHO sensor (In2O3 @ATQ-rGO). Excellent sensing properties toward HCHO under visible illumination have been achieved, including ultra-low pLOD of 3 ppb and high humidity-resistance. By control experiments and density functional theory calculation, it is indicated that the introduced fluorinated dipoles act as not only an "umbrella" to improve the humidity resistance of the composite, but also a "bridge" to accelerate the electron transport, improving the sensitivity of the material. The significant practicality and reliability of the obtained sensors were verified by in-situ simulation experiments using a 3 m3 test chamber with a humidity control system and by detection of the simulated lung disease patient's exhalation. This work provides an effective strategy of simultaneously achieving high humidity-resistance and low pLOD of room temperature formaldehyde sensing materials.

Abstract:Accurately detecting low concentrations (ppm levels) of hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) is paramount for maintaining production process stability and safeguarding human health. In this work, graphene electrodes were prepared on flexible PI films by laser direct writing technique, and rGO/ZnO was prepared by one-step hydrothermal method, which was coated on the surface of graphene electrodes by drop-coating method, and finally, a gas sensor for detecting H 2 S was obtained. Performance tests showed that all rGO/ZnO sensors responded effectively to 10 ppm H 2 S at 140 °C. Notably, the 10% rGO/ZnO sensor exhibited responses of 1.2 at 140 °C and 1.53 at 180 °C. They displayed qualities of commendable selectivity, rapid response, and recovery times. Furthermore, the study delves into the mechanism of rGO/ZnO on H 2 S gas and explains the electron transfer between the rGO/ZnO surface and H 2 S by calculations combined with spin-polarized density-functional theory (DFT). The experimental findings represent a positive contribution to advancing gas sensors tailored for ppm-level H 2 S detection.

Abstract:Fe2O3/graphene was synthesized successfully by a super critical CO2-assisted thermal method and further made into paper-like nanosheets by directed-flow, vertical assembly of individual Fe2O3/graphene nanosheets under a controlled magnetic field. Characterization of the samples was carried out by both electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The sensor materials outperform many other paper-like materials for H2S gas detection. In addition, vertically and horizontally aligned nanosheets were used as sensing materials to detect H2S gas along with chemiluminescence measurements. Importantly, the nanoscale Fe2O3/graphene sheets with the vertical arrangement are more beneficial than the nanosheets with the horizontal arrangement in terms of sensitivity.

Abstract:The bimetallic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), Cu/Co-MOF, was synthesized through a solvothermal method and calcined to obtain CuO/Co3O4 composites. By adjusting the molar ratio between Cu and Co ions, a composite material of CuO/Co3O4 (Cu: Co = 1: 1) was developed and showed excellent sensing capabilities, and the response reached as high as 196.3 for 10 ppm H2S detection. Furthermore, the optimal operating temperature as low as 40 °C was found. In comparison with the sensors prepared by pristine CuO and pristine Co3O4, the sensor based on CuO/Co3O4 composite exhibited a significant response. Additionally, the sensor showed a low detection limit of 300 ppb to H2S sensing. The gas sensing mechanism is discussed in depth from the perspective of p-p heterojunction formation between the p-type CuO and p-type Co3O4. The as-prepared CuO/Co3O4 composite-based sensor is expected to find practical application in the low-power monitoring of H2S.

High-Performance H2S Sensors to Detect SF6 Leakage

Abstract:Detecting H2S in oxygen-deficient conditions is vital for identifying leaks in SF6-insulated electrical equipment. Current infrared-based detection methods are expensive and sensitive to environmental conditions, highlighting the necessity for cost-effective and stable gas sensors. Existing gas sensors based on semiconducting metal oxides (SMOXs) are limited by redox reactions with oxygen and require high operating temperatures. Here, we introduce a room-temperature (RT) H2S sensor for oxygen-deficient environments using the intrinsic conducting two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic framework (MOF), Co1.8Ni1.2(hexaiminotriphenylene)2 [Co1.8Ni1.2(HITP)2], overcoming the limitations of SMOX gas sensors. Remarkably, Co1.8Ni1.2(HITP)2 sensors exhibit exceptional selectivity for H2S with negligible cross-responses and a sensitivity drift of less than 4.13% in an SF6 atmosphere over 60 days. The Co1.8Ni1.2(HITP)2 gas sensor shows significant promise for real-time and stable monitoring of H2S gas in oxygen-deficient environments.
Exploring MOF-Derived CuO/rGO Heterostructures for Highly Efficient Room Temperature CO2 Sensors

Abstract:In response to the urgent need for advanced climate change mitigation tools, this study introduces an innovative CO2 gas sensor based on p-p-type heterostructures designed for effective operation at room temperature. This sensor represents a significant step forward, utilizing the synergistic effects of p-p heterojunctions to enhance the effective interfacial area, thereby improving sensitivity. The incorporation of CuO nanoparticles and rGO sheets also optimizes gas transport channels, enhancing the sensor's performance. Our CuO/rGO heterostructures, with 5 wt % rGO, have shown a notable maximum response of 39.6-500 ppm of CO2 at 25 °C, and a low detection limit of 2 ppm, indicating their potential as high-performance, room-temperature CO2 sensors. The prepared sensor demonstrates long-term stability, maintaining 98% of its initial performance over a 30-day period when tested at 1-day intervals. Additionally, the sensor remains stable under conditions of over 40% relative humidity. Furthermore, a first-principles study provides insights into the interaction mechanisms with CO2 molecules, enhancing our understanding of the sensor's operation. This research contributes to the development of CO2 monitoring solutions, offering a practical and cost-effective approach to environmental monitoring in the context of global climate change efforts.
Cadmium sulfide in-situ derived heterostructure hybrids with tunable component ratio for highly sensitive and selective detection of ppb-level H2S

Abstract:Herein, we reported cadmium sulfide derivatives pine needles-like CdS/CdO heterostructure hybrids synthesized by hydrothermal treatment and subsequent self-template oxidation approach. The component ratio of the CdS/CdO hybrids can be controlled specifically via tuning the annealing treatment protocol, and thereby giving rise to the optimization of morphology, electrical characteristics, and gas sensing properties of derived hybrids. As proof of concept, the pine needles-like CdS/CdO, which obtained after different annealing temperatures and durations, as sensitive material was employed to manufacture H2S gas sensors. The sensor based on CdS/CdO hybrids (400 °C & 1 h) exhibited high sensitivity (73.5 to 5 ppm), ppb-level limit of detection (10 ppb), and excellent selectivity regardless of the interference of other gases at optimal working temperature of 200 °C. Due to the abnormal resistance variation of n-type cadmium sulfide derived hybrids while contacting with H2S, the sensing mechanism mainly depends on the surface chemical conversion from oxide to sulfide. The pine needles-like hierarchical morphology provided an excellent scaffold for the carriers transportation and the growth of the CdO, which played a key role in resistance modulation both in air and target gas, resulting in the enhanced H2S sensing performance ultimately.
Investigation of p-n sensing transition and related highly sensitive NH3 gas sensing behavior of SnPx/rGO composites

Abstract:Tin phosphides (SnPx) with alternating layers of P and Sn atoms possess abundant acidic P vacancy sites and high electronegativity, which can be potential candidates for gas sensing at room temperatures (RT). Herein, SnPx/rGO composites were fabricated for NH3 gas sensing at RT. Structural characterizations indicated the uniform distribution of SnPx on the rGO surface with small sizes and the existence of abundant acidic P vacancy sites. Gas sensing results showed that the response of SnPx/rGO composites with the phosphating ratio of 1:5 (SG-5) to 40 ppm NH3 at RT can be calculated as 117.5%. Moreover, SG-5 also exhibited a high response to NH3 gas with low concentrations (Response: 3% to 500 ppb NH3) and a LOD of 43.6 ppb. Besides, the NH3-TPD and in situ DRIFTs analysis were conducted to reveal the physical adsorption and complete desorption of NH3 gas on the material surface. More interestingly, due to different adsorption sites and conductive channels, the SnPx/rGO composites exhibited different sensing types upon exposure to reducing and oxidizing gases. Sensing response under different background gas atmospheres indicated that NH3 gases were mainly adsorbed on the heterojunctions to react with the surface oxygen species, exhibiting an n-type sensing behavior. However, NO2 gases were mainly adsorbed on the rGO surface to attract electrons, exhibiting a p-type sensing behavior. Density functional theory calculation results also confirmed the preferred adsorption of NH3 on SnPx and NO2 on rGO surface. This work provides an insight into gas adsorptions and desorptions on the SnPx surface and will promote the applications of metal phosphides in gas sensing.

Abstract:Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) gas is one of the highly toxic, lethal, and corrosive gases in the environment that can cause a series of inimical effects after human exposure. Therefore, developing gas-sensitive nanomaterials that could effectively detect the ultralow concentration of H2S is of utmost significance. In this study, a perovskite quantum dot (QD) structure is synthesized through a simple solution method in which CsPbBr3 QDs are surface capped with tributyltin oxide (TBTO). It was employed as a chemiresistor to H2S, exhibiting exceptional repeatability, superior selectivity, and an ultralow limit of detection of 250 ppb with a response sensitivity of 0.58 at room temperature, which is the highest value for H2S sensors based on metal-halide perovskite structure. The response/recovery time is 278/730 s at a 100 ppm concentration of H2S. Furthermore, we proposed the sensing mechanism of dispersion-sensing effect of the metallo-organic ligand by theory calculation to explain the excellent response performance. The chemical adsorption sensitivity of the related chemical groups is amended when the metallo-organic molecular is engrossed on the surface of CsPbBr3 QDs and becomes an isolated ligand. Thus, the H2S molecule is first absorbed by the isolated TBTO molecule, which prevents H2S from penetrating the perovskite CsPbBr3, forming a Pb–S bond, and damaging the sensing performance. Meanwhile, the H2S adsorption also affects the charge distribution of the internal CsPbBr3 QDs through a metallo-organic TBTO molecule, enhancing the sensitivity and response to H2S. Overall, the nanomaterial’s structure and gas response mechanism could be extended to detecting other gases.

A trace ppb-level electrochemical H2S sensor based on ultrathin Pt nanotubes

Abstract:An amperometric sensor has been developed with high sensitivity for real-time measurement of H2S gas at room temperature (25 °C ± 2 °C). In order to enhance the utilization of platinum and improve its catalytic performance, an ultrathin and one-dimensional (1D) Pt nanotubes (Pt NTs, ~3.5 nm in wall thickness) were designed and used as sensing electrode materials. Different concentrations of H2S gas were tested to evaluate the sensitivity of the sensor and to obtain the relationship between the electricity response signal and H2S gas concentration. At room temperature, the sensor based on Pt NTs shows better sensing performance than that based on Pt nanoparticles, which is mainly attributed to two factors, namely, the inherent characteristic of the hollow 1D Pt NTs. The Pt NTs-based sensor shows a detection limit as low as 0.025 ppb, which are the lowest among H2S gas sensors reported in the literatures. The response and recovery times are 0.75 s and 0.86 s for 0.8 ppb H2S, respectively. In addition, the sensor shows a wide range (100 ppm-0.025 ppb), high selectivity compared to other gases (including CO, NH3, CH2O, NO and NO2), good reproducibility, and satisfactory long-term stability. Thus, the ultrathin Pt NTs-based gas sensor would be a great potential to the real-time and online monitoring of the trace ppb-level H2S gas at room temperature.
