Abstract:The author provedTheorems 1.1–1.3 in [3] for not necessarily torus-invariant divisors on toric varieties in positive characteristic. Recently, an anonymous referee provided the following example to show that Theorem 1.1 does not necessarily hold for non torus-invariant divisors, which means that the arguments of [3] are erroneous. Example 1 Let X = P2, D ⊆ X a smooth projective curve of degree d ≥ 4, and L = OX (1). Then the cohomology exact sequence associated to the short exact sequence 0 → X ⊗ L → X (log D)⊗ L → OD ⊗ L → 0 together with the standard Bott vanishing for P2 show that H1(X, X (log D)⊗ L) ∼= H1(X, L|D). Then the cohomology exact sequence associated to the short exact sequence 0 → OX (−d + 1) → OX (1) → OD(1) → 0 shows that H1(X, L|D) ∼= H(X,OX (−d + 1)), which is nonzero as d ≥ 4. Therefore H1(X, X (log D) ⊗ L) = 0, which implies that Theorem 1.1 in [3] does not necessarily hold for non torus-invariant divisors on toric varieties in arbitrary characteristic.
Stable rationality of hypersurfaces of mock toric variety II

Abstract:In recent years, there has been a development in approaching rationality problems through motivic methods (cf. [Kontsevich--Tschinkel'19], [Nicaise--Shinder'19], [Nicaise--Ottem'21]). This method requires the explicit construction of degeneration families of curves with favorable properties. While the specific construction is generally difficult, [Nicaise--Ottem'22] combines combinatorial methods to construct degeneration families of hypersurfaces in toric varieties and mentions the stable rationality of a very general hypersurface in projective spaces. In this paper, we substitute mock toric varieties for toric varieties and we prove the following theorem from the motivic method: If a very general hypersurface of degree $d$ in $\mathbb{P}^{2n-5}_\mathbb{C}$ is not stably rational, then a very general hypersurface of degree $d$ in $\mathrm{Gr}_\mathbb{C}(2, n)$ is not stably rational.

Abstract:An irrational toric variety X is an analytic subset of the simplex associated to a finite configuration of real vectors. The positive torus acts on X by translation, and we consider limits of sequences of these translations. Our main result identifies all possible Hausdorff limits of translations of X as toric degenerations using elementary methods and the geometry of the secondary fan of the vector configuration. This generalizes work of Garcia-Puente et al., who used algebraic geometry and work of Kapranov, Sturmfels, and Zelevinsky, when the vectors were integral.

Abstract:Given a smooth projective toric variety $X$ of Picard rank 2, we resolve the diagonal sheaf on $X \times X$ by a linear complex of length $\dim{X}$ consisting of finite direct sums of line bundles. As applications, we prove a new case of a conjecture of Berkesch-Erman-Smith that predicts a version of Hilbert's Syzygy Theorem for virtual resolutions, and we obtain a Horrocks-type splitting criterion for vector bundles over smooth projective toric varieties of Picard rank 2, extending a result of Eisenbud-Erman-Schreyer. We also apply our results to give a new proof, in the case of smooth projective toric varieties of Picard rank 2, of a conjecture of Orlov concerning the Rouquier dimension of derived categories.

A remark on a theorem of Narasimhan and Ramanan

Abstract:In this short note, we provide an alternative proof of a notable theorem by Narasimhan and Ramanan. The theorem states that the moduli space of $S$-equivalence classes of semistable rank $2$ vector bundles over a curve $X$ of genus $2$ with trivial determinant is isomorphic to $\mathbb{P}^3$. Our proof relies on a criterion by Bauer and Szemberg, which characterizes projective spaces among smooth Fano varieties using Seshadri constants.

Abstract:We construct and study the moduli of stable hypersurfaces in toric orbifolds. Let X be a projective toric orbifold and an ample class. The moduli space is constructed as a quotient of the linear system by . Since the group G is non-reductive in general, we use new techniques of non-reductive geometric invariant theory. Using the A-discriminant of Gelfand, Kapranov and Zelevinsky, we prove semistability for quasismooth hypersurfaces of toric orbifolds. Further, we prove the existence of a quasi-projective moduli space of quasismooth hypersurfaces in a weighted projective space when the weighted projective space satisfies a certain condition. We also discuss how to proceed when this condition is not satisfied. We prove that the automorphism group of a quasismooth hypersurface of weighted projective space is finite excluding some low degrees.

Abstract:In this paper, the concepts of binomial difference ideals and toric difference varieties are defined and their properties are proved. Two canonical representations for Laurent binomial difference ideals are given using the reduced Groebner basis of Z[x]-lattices and regular and coherent difference ascending chains, respectively. Criteria for a Laurent binomial difference ideal to be reflexive, prime, well-mixed, perfect, and toric are given in terms of their support lattices which are Z[x]-lattices. The reflexive, well-mixed, and perfect closures of a Laurent binomial difference ideal are shown to be binomial. Four equivalent definitions for toric difference varieties are presented. Finally, algorithms are given to check whether a given Laurent binomial difference ideal I is reflexive, prime, well-mixed, perfect, or toric, and in the negative case, to compute the reflexive, well-mixed, and perfect closures of I. An algorithm is given to decompose a finitely generated perfect binomial difference ideal as the intersection of reflexive prime binomial difference ideals.

Abstract:Gotzmann's persistence theorem enables us to confirm the Hilbert polynomial of a subscheme of projective space by checking the Hilbert function in just two points, regardless of the dimension of the ambient space. We generalise this result to products of projective spaces, and then extend our result to any smooth projective toric variety. The number of points to check depends solely on the Picard rank of the ambient space, with no dependence on the dimension.

Abstract:We prove (with a mild restriction on the multidegrees) that all secant varieties of Segre-Veronese varieties with $k>2$ factors, $k-2$ of them being $\mathbb{P}^1$, have the expected dimension. This is equivalent to compute the dimension of the set of all partially symmetric tensors with a fixed rank and the same format. The proof uses the case $k=2$ proved by Galuppi and Oneto. Our theorem is an easy consequence of a theorem proved here for arbitrary projective varieties with a projective line as a factor and with respect to complete linear systems.

Abstract:We give a sufficient condition on a positive integer $m$ for every stratum of a given real toric hyperplane arrangement to contain a rational point of denominator $m$. As a consequence, we give a sufficient condition on $m$ for the degree $m$ Frobenius pushforward of the structure sheaf on a smooth toric variety to contain all possible summands in the Picard group.

Abstract:We consider the multigraded Hilbert scheme corresponding to the Hilbert function of a finite number of points in general position in a smooth projective complex toric variety. We develop several criteria for a point of that parameter space to be in the distinguished irreducible component. To obtain the criteria we study the behaviour of the locus of saturated ideals under morphisms of multigraded Hilbert schemes. We apply our results to classify the irreducible multigraded Hilbert schemes corresponding to points in general position in a product of projective spaces.

Abstract:We use the liftability of the relative Frobenius morphism of toric varieties and the strong liftability of toric varieties to prove the Bott vanishing theorem, the degeneration of the Hodge to de Rham spectral sequence and the Kawamata–Viehweg vanishing theorem for log pairs on toric varieties in positive characteristic. These results generalize those results of Danilov, Buch–Thomsen–Lauritzen–Mehta, Mustaţǎ and Fujino to the case where concerned Weil divisors are not necessarily torus invariant.

Abstract:We describe explicitly all multisets of weights whose defining projective toric varieties are self-dual. In addition, we describe a remarkable and unexpected combinatorial behaviour of the defining ideals of these varieties. The toric ideal of a self-dual projective variety is weakly robust, that means the Graver basis is the union of all minimal binomial generating sets. When, in addition, the self-dual projective variety is defined by a non-pyramidal configuration, then the toric ideal is strongly robust, namely the Graver basis is a minimal generating set, therefore there is only one minimal binomial generating set which is also a reduced Gröbner basis with respect to every monomial order and thus, equals the universal Gröbner basis.
