Abstract:Scale free dynamics are observed in a variety of physical and biological systems. These include neural activity in which evidence for scale freeness has been reported using a range of imaging modalities. Here, we derive the ways in which connections within a network must transform - relative to system size - in order to maintain scale freeness and test these theoretical transformations via simulations. First, we explore the known invariance of planetary motion for orbits varying in size. Using parametric empirical Bayesian modelling and a generic dynamical systems model, we show that we recover Kepler's third law from orbital timeseries, using our proposed transformations; thereby providing construct validation. We then demonstrate that the dynamical critical exponent is inversely proportional to the time rescaling exponent, in the context of coarse graining operations. Using murine calcium imaging data, we then show that the dynamical critical exponent can be estimated in an empirical biological setting. Specifically, we compare dynamical critical exponents - associated with spontaneous and task states in two regions of imaged cortex - that are classified as task-relevant and task-irrelevant. We find, consistently across animals, that the task-irrelevant region exhibits higher dynamical critical exponents during spontaneous activity than during task performance. Conversely, the task-relevant region is associated with higher dynamical critical exponents in task vs. spontaneous states. These data support the idea that higher dynamical critical exponents, within relevant cortical structures, underwrite neuronal processing due to the implicit increase in cross-scale information transmission.

Abstract:Inhomogeneities in deposition may lead to formation of rough surfaces, whose height fluctuations can be probed directly by scanning microscopy, or indirectly by scattering. Analytical or numerical treatments of simple growth models suggest that, quite generally, the height fluctuations have a self-similar character. The roughness and dynamic exponents are expected to be universal; depending only on the underlying mechanism that generates self-similar roughness. Despite its ubiquitous occurrence in theory and simulations, experimental confirmations of dynamic scaling have been rare. I shall briefly review the theoretical foundations of dynamic scaling, and suggest possible reasons for discrepancies with experimental results.

Abstract:Critical indices $\ensuremath{\beta}$, $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ $\ensuremath{\delta}$, $\ensuremath{\nu}$, etc. are defined and calculated for self-organized critical phenomena. Scaling relations are derived and checked numerically. The order-parameter exponent $\ensuremath{\beta}$ describes the spontaneous current and the relaxation to the critical point. The power spectrum has "$\frac{1}{f}$" behavior with exponent $\ensuremath{\varphi}=\frac{\ensuremath{\gamma}}{\ensuremath{\nu}z}$, where $z$ is the dynamical critical exponent.

Abstract:Characterizing the multiscale nature of fluctuations from nonlinear and nonstationary time series is one of the most intensively studied contemporary problems in nonlinear sciences. In this work, we address this problem by combining two established concepts-empirical mode decomposition (EMD) and generalized fractal dimensions-into a unified analysis framework. Specifically, we demonstrate that the intrinsic mode functions derived by EMD can be used as a source of local (in terms of scales) information about the properties of the phase-space trajectory of the system under study, allowing us to derive multiscale measures when looking at the behavior of the generalized fractal dimensions at different scales. This formalism is applied to three well-known low-dimensional deterministic dynamical systems (the Hénon map, the Lorenz '63 system, and the standard map), three realizations of fractional Brownian motion with different Hurst exponents, and two somewhat higher-dimensional deterministic dynamical systems (the Lorenz '96 model and the on-off intermittency model). These examples allow us to assess the performance of our formalism with respect to practically relevant aspects like additive noise, different initial conditions, the length of the time series under study, low- vs high-dimensional dynamics, and bursting effects. Finally, by taking advantage of two real-world systems whose multiscale features have been widely investigated (a marine stack record providing a proxy of the global ice volume variability of the past 5×106 years and the SYM-H geomagnetic index), we also illustrate the applicability of this formalism to real-world time series.

Abstract:In delocalized systems, particle number fluctuations, also known as quantum surface roughness, and the mean-square displacement exhibit a temporal power-law growth followed by a saturation to a system-size-dependent value. We use simple scaling arguments to show that these quantities satisfy the Family-Vicsek scaling law and derive a dynamic scaling relation between the dynamical exponents, assuming that the saturation times of both quantities scale similarly with the system size. This relation clarifies the mechanism behind quantum surface roughness growth and suggests that diffusive quantum many-body systems belong to the Edwards-Wilkinson universality class. Moreover, it provides a convenient way to assess quantum transport in cold-atom experiments. We numerically verify our results by studying two non-interacting models and one interacting model having regimes with distinct dynamical exponents.

Abstract:We study the intricate relationships between the dynamical scaling properties of electron wave packets and the multifractality of the eigenstates in quantum systems. Numerical simulations for the Harper model and the Fibonacci chain indicate that the root mean square displacement displays the scaling behavior r(t)∼ t^β with β=D_2^ψ, where D_2^ψ is the correlation dimension of the multifractal eigenstates. The equality can be generalized to d-dimensional systems as β=D_2^ψ/d, as long as the electron motion is ballistic in the effective D_2^ψ-dimensional space. This equality should be replaced by β<D_2^ψ/d if the motion is non-ballistic, as supported by all known results.

Abstract:The notion of scale-invariant dynamics is well established at late times in quantum chaotic systems, as illustrated by the emergence of a ramp in the spectral form factor (SFF). Building on the results of the preceding Letter [Phys. Rev. Lett. 131, 060404 (2023)], we explore features of scale-invariant dynamics of survival probability and SFF at criticality, i.e., at eigenstate transitions from quantum chaos to localization. We show that, in contrast to the quantum chaotic regime, the quantum dynamics at criticality do not only exhibit scale invariance at late times, but also at much shorter times that we refer to as mid-time dynamics. Our results apply to both quadratic and interacting models. Specifically, we study Anderson models in dimensions three to five and power-law random banded matrices for the former, and the quantum sun model and the ultrametric model for the latter, as well as the Rosenzweig-Porter model.

Abstract:We consider the decoherence of a quantum system S coupled to a quantum environment E. For states chosen uniformly at random from the unit hypersphere in the Hilbert space of the closed system S + E we derive a scaling relationship for the sum of the off-diagonal elements of the reduced density matrix of S as a function of the size D-E of the Hilbert space of E. This sum decreases as 1/root D-E as long as D-E >> 1. We test this scaling prediction by performing large-scale simulations which solve the time-dependent Schrodinger equation for a ring of spin-1/2 particles, four of them belonging to S and the others to E, and for this ring with small world bonds added in E and/or between S and E. The spin-1/2 particles experience nearest-neighbor interactions that are identical for the interactions within S and random for the interactions within E and between S and E, or that are all identical. Provided that the time evolution drives the whole system from the initial state toward a scaling state, a state which has similar properties as states belonging to the class of quantum states for which we derived the scaling relationship, the scaling prediction holds. We examine various interaction parameters and initial states for our model system to find whether or not the time evolution reaches the class of states that have the scaling property. For the homogeneous ring we find that the evolution for select initial states does not reach these scaling states. This conclusion is not modified if we add some homogeneous random connections. For a ring we find that some randomness in the interaction parameters is required so that most initial configurations are driven toward the scaling state. Furthermore, if the amount of randomness is small the time required to reach the scaling states may be very large. For the case of all random interactions in E the ring is driven toward the scaling state. Adding small world bonds between S and E with random interaction strengths may decrease the time required to reach the scaling state or may prevent the scaling state from being reached. For the latter case we show that increasing the complexity of the environment by adding extra connections within the environment suffices to observe the predicted scaling behavior. Measurement-induced integer families of critical dynamical scaling in quantum many-body systems

Abstract:A quantum many-body system can undergo transitions in the presence of continuous measurement. In this work, we find that a generic class of critical dynamical scaling behavior can emerge at these measurement-induced transitions. Remarkably, depending on the symmetry that can be respected by the system, different integer families of dynamical scaling can emerge. The origin of these scaling families can be traced back to the presence of hierarchies of high order exceptional points in the effective non-Hermitian descriptions of the systems. Direct experimental observation of this class of dynamical scaling behavior can be readily achieved using ultracold atoms in optical lattices or through intermediate-scale quantum computing systems.

Abstract:A detailed examination of the cascade statistics and scaling exponents is carried out for a dynamical-system model of fully developed turbulence called the GOY shell model. The convergence in time of the probability density functions and moments of the velocity fluctuations and their scaling exponents is studied with particular care. With a large sample size (5 x 10(9)), we demonstrate that there exists a finite cutoff for the velocity fluctuations at each inertial-range wave-number shell and the properties of the cutoff determine the scaling exponents of all moments. This cutoff represents the most intermittent structures in the cascade dynamics and exhibits a power-law dependence on wave number. The accurately determined scaling exponents permit a detailed comparison with various phenomenological models describing the statistics of the energy cascade. The consideration of the first and second derivatives of the scaling exponents with respect to the order of the moments p provides the evidence that the hierarchical-structure model [She and Leveque, Phys. Rev. Lett. 72, 336 (1994)] predicts the best functional dependence on p of the scaling exponents in the GOY shell model.

Abstract:Recent studies on the phenomenology of ageing in certain many-particle systems which are at a critical point of their non-equilibrium steady-states, are reviewed. Examples include the contact process, the parity-conserving branching-annihilating random walk, two exactly solvable particle-reaction models and kinetic growth models. While the generic scaling descriptions known from magnetic system can be taken over, some of the scaling relations between the ageing exponents are no longer valid. In particular, there is no obvious generalization of the universal limit fluctuation-dissipation ratio. The form of the scaling function of the two-time response function is compared with the prediction of the theory of local scale-invariance.

Abstract:We investigated numerically the critical scaling and universality in the short-time dynamics for the spin models on the two-dimensional triangle lattices. By using the dynamic Monte Carlo simulations, the critical exponents θ, ζ and β/ν are estimated from short-time dynamic scaling relations and the power-law behavior of the magnetization, auto-correlation and the second magnetic moment. Our results confirmed the universality proposal.
Scaling and Finite-Size Scaling above the Upper Critical Dimension

Abstract:In the 1960's, four famous scaling relations were developed which relate the six standard critical exponents describing continuous phase transitions in the thermodynamic limit of statistical physics models. They are well understood at a fundamental level through the renormalization group. They have been verified in multitudes of theoretical, computational and experimental studies and are firmly established and profoundly important for our understanding of critical phenomena. One of the scaling relations, hyperscaling, fails above the upper critical dimension. There, critical phenomena are governed by Gaussian fixed points in the renormalization-group formalism. Dangerous irrelevant variables are required to deliver the mean-field and Landau values of the critical exponents, which are deemed valid by the Ginzburg criterion. Also above the upper critical dimension, the standard picture is that, unlike for low-dimensional systems, finite-size scaling is non-universal. Here we report on new developments which indicate that the current paradigm is flawed and incomplete. In particular, the introduction of a new exponent characterising the finite-size correlation length allows one to extend hyperscaling beyond the upper critical dimension. Moreover, finite-size scaling is shown to be universal provided the correct scaling window is chosen. These recent developments also lead to the introduction of a new scaling relation analogous to one introduced by Fisher 50 years ago.

Critical dynamics of the Kuramoto model on sparse random networks

Abstract:We consider the Kuramoto model on sparse random networks such as the Erdős-Rényi graph or its combination with a regular two-dimensional lattice and study the dynamical scaling behavior of the model at the synchronization transition by large-scale, massively parallel numerical integration. By this method, we obtain an estimate of critical coupling strength more accurate than obtained earlier by finite-size scaling of the stationary order parameter. Our results confirm the compatibility of the correlation-size and the temporal correlation-length exponent with the mean-field universality class. However, the scaling of the order parameter exhibits corrections much stronger than those of the Kuramoto model with all-to-all coupling, making thereby an accurate estimate of the order-parameter exponent hard. We find furthermore that, as a qualitative difference to the model with all-to-all coupling, the effective critical exponents involving the order-parameter exponent, such as the effective decay exponent characterizing the critical desynchronization dynamics show a non-monotonic approach toward the asymptotic value. In the light of these results, the technique of finite-size scaling of limited size data for the Kuramoto model on sparse graphs has to be treated cautiously.

A new approach to dynamic finite-size scaling

Abstract:In this work we have considered the Taylor series expansion of the dynamic scaling relation of the magnetization with respect to small initial magnetization values in order to study the dynamic scaling behaviour of 2- and 3-dimensional Ising models. We have used the literature values of the critical exponents and of the new dynamic exponent $x_0$ to observe the dynamic finite-size scaling behaviour of the time evolution of the magnetization during early stages of the Monte Carlo simulation. For 3-dimensional Ising Model we have also presented that this method opens the possibility of calculating $z$ and $x_0$ separately. Our results show good agreement with the literature values. Measurements done on lattices with different sizes seem to give very good scaling.

Universal scaling in active single-file dynamics

Abstract:We study the single-file dynamics of three classes of active particles: run-and-tumble particles, active Brownian particles and active Ornstein-Uhlenbeck particles. At high activity values, the particles, interacting via purely repulsive and short-ranged forces, aggregate into several motile and dynamical clusters of comparable size, and do not display bulk phase-segregation. In this dynamical steady-state, we find that the cluster size distribution of these aggregates is a scaled function of the density and activity parameters across the three models of active particles with the same scaling function. The velocity distribution of these motile clusters is non-Gaussian. We show that the effective dynamics of these clusters can explain the observed emergent scaling of the mean-squared displacement of tagged particles for all the three models with identical scaling exponents and functions. Concomitant with the clustering seen at high activities, we observe that the static density correlation function displays rich structures, including multiple peaks that are reminiscent of particle clustering induced by effective attractive interactions, while the dynamical variant shows non-diffusive scaling. Our study reveals a universal scaling behavior in the single-file dynamics of interacting active particles.

Scaling and Universality in River Flow Dynamics

Abstract:We investigate flow dynamics in rivers characterized by basin areas and daily mean discharge spanning different orders of magnitude. We show that the delayed increments evaluated at time scales ranging from days to months can be opportunely rescaled to the same non-Gaussian probability density function. Such a scaling breaks up above a certain critical horizon, where a behavior typical of thermodynamic systems at the critical point emerges. We finally show that both the scaling behavior and the break up of the scaling are universal features of river flow dynamics.

Abstract:In this work we analyze the universal scaling functions and the critical exponents at the upper critical dimension of a continuous phase transition. The consideration of the universal scaling behavior yields a decisive check of the value of the upper critical dimension. We apply our method to a non-equilibrium continuous phase transition. But focusing on the equation of state of the phase transition it is easy to extend our analysis to all equilibrium and non-equilibrium phase transitions observed numerically or experimentally.
