Abstract:Fractals and multifractals and their associated scaling laws provide a quantification of the complexity of a variety of scale invariant complex systems. Here, we focus on lattice multifractals which exhibit complex exponents associated with observable log-periodicity. We perform detailed numerical analyses of lattice multifractals and explain the origin of three different scaling regions found in the moments. A novel numerical approach is proposed to extract the log-frequencies. In the non-lattice case, there is no visible log-periodicity. i.e., no preferred scaling ratio since the set of complex exponents spreads irregularly within the complex plane. A non-lattice multifractal can be approximated by a sequence of lattice multifractals so that the sets of complex exponents of the lattice sequence converge to the set of complex exponents of the non-lattice one. An algorithm for the construction of the lattice sequence is proposed explicitly. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Inhomogeneities in deposition may lead to formation of rough surfaces, whose height fluctuations can be probed directly by scanning microscopy, or indirectly by scattering. Analytical or numerical treatments of simple growth models suggest that, quite generally, the height fluctuations have a self-similar character. The roughness and dynamic exponents are expected to be universal; depending only on the underlying mechanism that generates self-similar roughness. Despite its ubiquitous occurrence in theory and simulations, experimental confirmations of dynamic scaling have been rare. I shall briefly review the theoretical foundations of dynamic scaling, and suggest possible reasons for discrepancies with experimental results.

Abstract:Geographical phenomena of cities fall into two categories: one is simple systems which characteristic scales, and the other is complex systems without characteristic scale. The key of conventional mathematical modeling and quantitative analysis is to find characteristic length. The scale-free phenomena of cities cannot be effectively characterized by traditional mathematical methods. Thus the characteristic scale-based spatial analysis should be replace by scaling-based spatial analysis. Based on mathematical reasoning and empirical studies, this work is devoted to discussing scaling, fractals, spatial complexity of cities and the inherent relationships between these theories. The main points are as follows. First, scaling is one of basic properties of cities, and the essence of scaling in cities is invariance of contraction or dilation transform of urban models. Second, fractal pattern is the spatial order emerging from urban self-organized evolution. The essence of city fractals is scaling symmetry. Third, spatial complexity of cities is related to scaling and fractals. The ideas from scaling and fractals make new ways for understanding complex spatial systems. In conclusions, fractal geometry provides a powerful tool for scaling analysis, and can be used to explore spatial complexity and singularity of cities. Scaling and fractals can be integrated into a new theoretical framework of spatial complexity of cities.

Abstract:Our numerical simulations with the Cahn-Hilliard equation show that coarsening of fractal clusters (FCs) is not a scale-invariant process. On the other hand, a typical coarsening length scale and interfacial area of the FC exhibit power laws in time, while the mass fractal dimension remains invariant. The initial value of the lower cutoff is a relevant length scale. A sharp-interface model is formulated that can follow the whole dynamics of a diffusion controlled growth, coarsening, fragmentation and approach to equilibrium in a system with conserved order parameter.

Abstract:We study the intricate relationships between the dynamical scaling properties of electron wave packets and the multifractality of the eigenstates in quantum systems. Numerical simulations for the Harper model and the Fibonacci chain indicate that the root mean square displacement displays the scaling behavior r(t)∼ t^β with β=D_2^ψ, where D_2^ψ is the correlation dimension of the multifractal eigenstates. The equality can be generalized to d-dimensional systems as β=D_2^ψ/d, as long as the electron motion is ballistic in the effective D_2^ψ-dimensional space. This equality should be replaced by β<D_2^ψ/d if the motion is non-ballistic, as supported by all known results.
Extremal-point density of scaling processes: From fractional Brownian motion to turbulence in one dimension

Abstract:In recent years several local extrema-based methodologies have been proposed to investigate either the nonlinear or the nonstationary time series for scaling analysis. In the present work, we study systematically the distribution of the local extrema for both synthesized scaling processes and turbulent velocity data from experiments. The results show that for the fractional Brownian motion (fBm) without intermittency correction the measured extremal-point-density (EPD) agrees well with a theoretical prediction. For a multifractal random walk (MRW) with the lognormal statistics, the measured EPD is independent of the intermittency parameter μ, suggesting that the intermittency correction does not change the distribution of extremal points but changes the amplitude. By introducing a coarse-grained operator, the power-law behavior of these scaling processes is then revealed via the measured EPD for different scales. For fBm the scaling exponent ξ(H) is found to be ξ(H)=H, where H is Hurst number, while for MRW ξ(μ) shows a linear relation with the intermittency parameter μ. Such EPD approach is further applied to the turbulent velocity data obtained from a wind tunnel flow experiment with the Taylor scale λ-based Reynolds number Re_{λ}=720, and a turbulent boundary layer with the momentum thickness θ based Reynolds number Re_{θ}=810. A scaling exponent ξ≃0.37 is retrieved for the former case. For the latter one, the measured EPD shows clearly four regimes, which agrees well with the corresponding sublayer structures inside the turbulent boundary layer.

This is an established method to detect and quantify the fluctuation behaviour known under the term hyperuniformity. Here, we consider one-dimensional systems with pure point, singular continuous and absolutely continuous diffraction spectra, which include perfectly ordered cut and project and inflation point sets as well as systems with stochastic disorder.

Abstract:The instability of fractal aggregates is discussed qualitatively using the self-consistent harmonic approximation. The density of elastic vibrational states originating from phonon and elastic fracton modes is used to calculate the mean square displacement of lattice constituents, and the transition temperature is estimated for fractal aggregates with different dimensionalities of elastic fractons.

Abstract:Roughness of successively developed gravel surfaces in flume experiments is investigated using laser scanned elevation fields. Scaling behavior of these surfaces is studied using structure functions. The results show that all surfaces exhibit good scaling behavior for two scaling regions. Multifractal analysis based on singular measures is then conducted for the two scaling regions, respectively. The relatively smaller scaling region characterizing subgrain scale roughness exhibits evident nonstationarity and intermittency. In contrary, the measures for the larger scaling region characterizing the spatial distribution of grains are more stationary and less intermittent than the measures for the subgrain scaling region.

Abstract:Using a recently introduced mapping between a scalar elastic network tethered at its boundaries and a diffusion problem with permanent traps, we study various vibrational properties of progressively tethered disordered fractals. Different scaling forms are proposed for different types of boundary tethering and numerical investigation of the scaling is performed by the approximate diagonalization of the corresponding large, sparse transition probability matrices. Rather different localization behaviors are found for the leading modes depending on the types of tethering.

Abstract:Fractal/non-fractal morphological transitions allow for the systematic study of the physics behind fractal morphogenesis in nature. In these systems, the fractal dimension is considered a non-thermal order parameter, commonly and equivalently computed from the scaling of the two-point radial- or angular-density correlations. However, these two quantities lead to discrepancies during the analysis of basic systems, such as in the diffusion-limited aggregation fractal. Hence, the corresponding clarification regarding the limits of the radial/angular scaling equivalence is needed. In this work, considering three fundamental fractal/non-fractal transitions in two dimensions, we show that the unavoidable emergence of growth anisotropies is responsible for the breaking-down of the radial/angular equivalence. Specifically, we show that the angular scaling behaves as a critical power-law, whereas the radial scaling as an exponential that, under the fractal dimension interpretation, resemble first- and second-order transitions, respectively. Remarkably, these and previous results can be unified under a single fractal dimensionality equation.

Abstract:We formulate a scaling theory for the long-time diffusive motion in a space occluded by a high density of moving obstacles in dimensions 1, 2 and 3. Our tracers diffuse anomalously over many decades in time, before reaching a diffusive steady state with an effective diffusion constant D eff , which depends on the obstacle diffusivity and density. The scaling of D eff , above and below a critical regime, is characterized by two independent critical parameters: the conductivity exponent μ, also found in models with frozen obstacles, and an exponent ψ, which quantifies the effect of obstacle diffusivity.

Abstract:Under decompression, disordered solids undergo an unjamming transition where they become under-coordinated and lose their structural rigidity. The mechanical and vibrational properties of these materials have been an object of theoretical, numerical, and experimental research for decades. In the study of low-coordination solids, understanding the behavior and physical interpretation of observables that diverge near the transition is of particular importance. Several such quantities are length scales ($\xi$ or $l$) that characterize the size of excitations, the decay of spatial correlations, the response to perturbations, or the effect of physical constraints in the boundary or bulk of the material. Additionally, the spatial and sample-to-sample fluctuations of macroscopic observables such as contact statistics or elastic moduli diverge approaching unjamming. Here, we discuss important connections between all of these quantities, and present numerical results that characterize the scaling properties of sample-to-sample contact and shear modulus fluctuations in ensembles of low-coordination disordered sphere packings and spring networks. Overall, we highlight three distinct scaling regimes and two crossovers in the disorder quantifiers $\chi_z$ and $\chi_\mu$ as functions of system size $N$ and proximity to unjamming $\delta z$. As we discuss, $\chi_X$ relates to the standard deviation $\sigma_X$ of the sample-to-sample distribution of the quantity $X$ (e.g. excess coordination $\delta z$ or shear modulus $\mu$) for an ensemble of systems. Importantly, $\chi_\mu$ has been linked to experimentally accessible quantities that pertain to sound attenuation and the density of vibrational states in glasses.

Abstract:When stressed sufficiently, solid materials yield and deform plastically via reorganization of microscopic constituents. Indeed, it is possible to alter the micro-structure of materials by judicious application of stress, an empirical pro- cess utilized in practice to enhance the mechanical properties of metals. Un- derstanding the interdependence of plastic flow and microscopic structure in these non-equilibrium states, however, remains a major challenge. Here, we ex- perimentally investigate this relationship, between the relaxation dynamics and microscopic structure of disordered colloidal solids during plastic deformation. We apply oscillatory shear to solid colloidal monolayers and study their particle trajectories as a function of shear rate in the plastic regime. Under these cir- cumstances, the strain rate, the relaxation rate associated with plastic flow, and the sample microscopic structure oscillate together but with different phases. Interestingly, the experiments reveal that the relaxation rate associated with plastic flow at time t is correlated with the strain rate and sample microscopic structure measured at earlier and later times, respectively. The relaxation rate, in this non-stationary condition, exhibits power-law shear-thinning behavior and scales exponentially with sample excess entropy. Thus, measurement of sample static structure (excess entropy) provides insight about both strain-rate and constituent rearrangement dynamics in the sample at earlier times.

Scaling law of diffusion processes on fractal networks

Abstract:We investigate diffusion processes on fractal networks at different length scales. This is achieved by the application of a box covering procedure. We find that a clearly scaling law emerges on a great variety of fractal networks. Specifically, a number of metrics for quantifying diffusion processes, such as Kemeny’s constant, the expected search time and its variation, follow a power-law with the number of boxes for covering. Furthermore, we identify a power-law relation between energy and the number of boxes. Remarkably, we show that the expected time for hunting a moving target similarly presents a power law behavior on a given fractal network. Our work reveals that scaling law is a common characteristic of fractal networks beyond their structural organization.

Abstract:We use x-ray tomography to investigate the translational and rotational dynamical heterogeneities of a three dimensional hard ellipsoid granular packing driven by oscillatory shear. We find that particles which translate quickly form clusters with a size distribution given by a power law with an exponent that is independent of the strain amplitude. Identical behavior is found for particles that are translating slowly, rotating quickly, or rotating slowly. The geometrical properties of these four different types of clusters are the same as those of random clusters. Different cluster types are considerably correlated or anticorrelated, indicating a significant coupling between translational and rotational degrees of freedom. Surprisingly, these clusters are formed already at time scales that are much shorter than the a-relaxation time, in stark contrast to the behavior found in glass-forming systems.
Fractal Analysis Based on Hierarchical Scaling in Complex Systems

Abstract:A fractal is in essence a hierarchy with cascade structure, which can be described with a set of exponential functions. From these exponential functions, a set of power laws indicative of scaling can be derived. Hierarchy structure and spatial network proved to be associated with one another. This paper is devoted to exploring the theory of fractal analysis of complex systems by means of hierarchical scaling. Two research methods are utilized to make this study, including logic analysis method and empirical analysis method. The main results are as follows. First, a fractal system such as Cantor set is described from the hierarchical angle of view; based on hierarchical structure, three approaches are proposed to estimate fractal dimension. Second, the hierarchical scaling can be generalized to describe multifractals, fractal complementary sets, and self-similar curve such as logarithmic spiral. Third, complex systems such as urban systems are demonstrated to be a self-similar hierarchy. The human settlements in Germany and the population of different languages in the world are taken as two examples to make empirical analyses. This study may be revealing for associating fractal analysis with other types of scaling analysis of complex systems, and spatial optimization theory may be developed in future by combining the theories of fractals, allometry, and hierarchy.
Fractal homogenization of multiscale interface problems

Abstract:Inspired by continuum mechanical contact problems with geological fault networks, we consider elliptic second order differential equations with jump conditions on a sequence of multiscale networks of interfaces with a finite number of non-separating scales. Our aim is to derive and analyze a description of the asymptotic limit of infinitely many scales in order to quantify the effect of resolving the network only up to some finite number of interfaces and to consider all further effects as homogeneous. As classical homogenization techniques are not suited for this kind of geometrical setting, we suggest a new concept, called fractal homogenization, to derive and analyze an asymptotic limit problem from a corresponding sequence of finite-scale interface problems. We provide an intuitive characterization of the corresponding fractal solution space in terms of generalized jumps and gradients together with continuous embeddings into L2 and Hs, s<1/2. We show existence and uniqueness of the solution of the asymptotic limit problem and exponential convergence of the approximating finite-scale solutions. Computational experiments involving a related numerical homogenization technique illustrate our theoretical findings.
