Abstract:A method for deforming fractals from complex dynamics is proposed. Firstly, an elementary fractal transfiguration model of complex quadratic dynamics in the form of a six-parameter family is presented. Secondly, a two-dimensional extension factor, also including six control parameters, is constructed. Finally, a transfiguration algorithm is put forward, which begins with an iteration of the fractal transfiguration model for computation of the periodicities of all discrete points in the given complex plane and then exerts a 2D extension factor on every point to transfer them while keeping their periodicities unchanged. Experimental results demonstrate that our fractal deformation algorithm is simple, intuitive, foreseeable and easy to control. It is hoped that our investigation would result in new perspectives for the deformation of other deterministic fractals as well.

Abstract:We discuss fractal measures on a bifractal, which is defined as a Cartesian product of two fractals and represents a class of self-affine fractals. It is shown that the global D-q, f(q) and alpha(q) are the sums of the corresponding exponents for the subfractals. The relation Between the global f(alpha) spectrum and those for subfractals is also derived.

Abstract:We define and analyse, by an exact real space renormalization group method, ultradiffusion on a family of fractal branching Koch curves. The fractal dimension of the family is df=ln[2b+12(b−3)]/ln b, where b is the scaling factor of the fractal. find that if and only if b=7, 9, 11 and 13, there is a crossover for the dynamical phase transition from anomalous to ordinary diffusion.

Abstract:Self-avoiding random walks on Sierpinski carpets with different fractal dimensionalities (FDs) were simulated. The results indicate that the scaling property of walks remains; however, the power exponents are modified by the FDs of the carpets on which the walker is placed.

Abstract:It has recently been shown that networks possessing the scale-free and fractal properties may exhibit the bifractal nature, in which local structures are described by two different fractal dimensions. In this study, we investigate random walks on fractal scale-free networks (FSFNs) by examining the walk dimension $d_{\text{w}}$ and the spectral dimension $d_{\text{s}}$, to understand how the bifractality of FSFNs affects their dynamical properties. The walk dimension is found to be unaffected by the difference in local fractality of an FSFN and remains constant regardless of the starting node of a random walk, whereas the spectral dimension takes two values, $d_{\text{s}}^{\text{min}}$ and $d_{\text{s}}^{\text{max}}(> d_{\text{s}}^{\text{min}})$, depending on the starting node. The dimension $d_{\text{s}}^{\text{min}}$ characterizes the return probability of a random walker starting from an infinite-degree hub node in the thermodynamic limit, while $d_{\text{s}}^{\text{max}}$ describes that of a random walker starting from a finite-degree non-hub node infinitely distant from hub nodes and is equal to the global spectral dimension $D_{\text{s}}$. The existence of two local spectral dimensions is a direct consequence of the bifractality of the FSFN. Furthermore, analytical expressions of $d_{\text{w}}$, $d_{\text{s}}^{\text{min}}$, and $d_{\text{s}}^{\text{max}}$ are presented for FSFNs formed by the generator model and the giant components of critical scale-free random graphs, and are numerically confirmed.

Abstract:We study the intricate relationships between the dynamical scaling properties of electron wave packets and the multifractality of the eigenstates in quantum systems. Numerical simulations for the Harper model and the Fibonacci chain indicate that the root mean square displacement displays the scaling behavior r(t)∼ t^β with β=D_2^ψ, where D_2^ψ is the correlation dimension of the multifractal eigenstates. The equality can be generalized to d-dimensional systems as β=D_2^ψ/d, as long as the electron motion is ballistic in the effective D_2^ψ-dimensional space. This equality should be replaced by β<D_2^ψ/d if the motion is non-ballistic, as supported by all known results.

Abstract:Scaling properties in financial fluctuations are reviewed from the standpoint of statistical physics. We firstly show theoretically that the balance of demand and supply enhances fluctuations due to the underlying phase transition mechanism. By analyzing tick data of yen-dollar exchange rates we confirm two fractal properties: 1 The distribution of rate change in a fixed ticks is approximated by a symmetric stretched exponential function for a wide range of time intervals; 2 the interval time distribution of trades nearly follows a power law. Empirical fractal properties in companies' financial data, such as distributions and fluctuations in assets and incomes are discussed with a simple model. The importance of methods and theories for phase transitions is discussed.

Abstract:It is well known that for a Brownian motion, if we change the medium to be inhomogeneous by a measure μ , then the new motion (the time-changed process) will diffuse according to a different metric D (·,·). In 2009, Kigami initiated a general scheme to construct such metrics through some self-similar weight functions g on the symbolic space. In order to provide concrete models to Kigami’s theoretical construction, in this paper, we give a thorough study of his metric on two classes of fractals of primary importance: the nested fractals and the generalized Sierpinski carpets; we assume further that the weight functions g ≔ g a are generated by “symmetric” weights a . Let M be the domain of a such that D ga defines a metric, and let S be the boundary of M . One of our main results is that the metrics from g a satisfy the metric chain condition if and only if a ∈ S. To determine M and S , we provide a recursive weight transfer construction on the nested fractals, and a basic symmetric argument on the Sierpinski carpet. As an application, we use the metric chain condition to obtain the lower estimate of the sub-Gaussian heat kernel. This together with the upper estimate obtained by Kigami allows us to have a concrete class of metrics for the time change, and the two-sided sub-Gaussian heat kernel estimate on the fundamental fractals.

Abstract:We introduce a notion of gap sequences for compact sets E subset of R(d), which is a generalization of the gap sequences of compact sets on the real line. We show that if the gap sequences of two fractal sets are not equivalent, then these two sets cannot be Lipschitz equivalent, where the latter fact is usually very hard to verify. Finally, we show that for some typical fractal sets, the gap sequences characterize the upper box dimension.

Abstract:Several arguments are given leading to the sufficient and necessary condition for spontaneous symmetry breaking at a finite temperature on fractals, which is (d) over tilde greater than or equal to 2 for discrete symmetry and d > d(w) + 1 for continuous symmetry, where (d) over tilde, d, and d(w) are, respectively, the spectral dimensionality, fractal dimensionality, and dimensionality of the random walk of this structure. In addition, phase transitions can always occur at T-c > O on infinitely ramified lattices. Since (d) over tilde < 2 for fractals usually studied, T-c was always found to be O on finitely ramified fractals. (d) over tilde > 2 can be satisfied by a bifractal, a Cartesian product of two fractals, hence T-c > O is expected. A Peierls-Griffiths proof is given for an Ising model on an example of bifractals, the periodic Koch lattice with (d) over tilde = 2, showing that T-c is indeed finite. A unified picture concerning both fractal and Euclidean lattices is thus obtained.

Abstract:The presence of large-scale real-world networks with various architectures has motivated an active research towards a unified understanding of diverse topologies of networks. Such studies have revealed that many networks with the scale-free and fractal properties exhibit the structural multifractality, some of which are actually bifractal. Bifractality is a particular case of the multifractal property, where only two local fractal dimensions $d_{\text{f}}^{\text{min}}$ and $d_{\text{f}}^{\text{max}} (>d_{\text{f}}^{\text{min}})$ suffice to explain the structural inhomogeneity of a network. In this work, we investigate analytically and numerically the multifractal property of a wide range of fractal scale-free networks (FSFNs) including deterministic hierarchical, stochastic hierarchical, non-hierarchical, and real-world FSFNs. Then we demonstrate how commonly FSFNs exhibit the bifractal property. The results show that all these networks possess the bifractal nature. We conjecture from our findings that any FSFN is bifractal. Furthermore, we find that in the thermodynamic limit the lower local fractal dimension $d_{\text{f}}^{\text{min}}$ describes substructures around infinitely high-degree hub nodes and finite-degree nodes at finite distances from these hub nodes, whereas $d_{\text{f}}^{\text{max}}$ characterizes local fractality around finite-degree nodes infinitely far from the infinite-degree hub nodes. Since the bifractal nature of FSFNs may strongly influence time-dependent phenomena on FSFNs, our results will be useful for understanding dynamics such as information diffusion and synchronization on FSFNs from a unified perspective.

Abstract:The distribution of visible matter in the universe, such as galaxies and galaxy clusters, has its origin in the week fluctuations of density that existed at the epoch of recombination. The hierarchical distribution of the universe, with its galaxies, clusters and super-clusters of galaxies indicates the absence of a natural length scale. In the Newtonian formulation, numerical simulations of a one-dimensional system permit us to precisely follow the evolution of an ensemble of particles starting with an initial perturbation in the Hubble flow. The limitation of the investigation to one dimension removes the necessity to make approximations in calculating the gravitational field and, on the whole, the system dynamics. It is then possible to accurately follow the trajectories of particles for a long time. The simulations show the emergence of a self-similar hierarchical structure in both the phase space and the configuration space and invites the implementation of a multifractal analysis. Here, after showing that symmetry considerations leads to the construction of a family of equations of motion of the one-dimensional gravitational system, we apply four different methods for computing generalized dimensions $D_q$ of the distribution of particles in configuration space. We first employ the conventional box counting and correlation integral methods based on partitions of equal size and then the less familiar nearest-neighbor and k-neighbor methods based on partitions of equal mass. We show that the latter are superior for computing generalized dimensions for indices $q<-1$ which characterize regions of low density.

Abstract:We develop the hypothesis that the dynamics of a given system may lead to the activity being constricted to a subset of space, characterized by a fractal dimension smaller than the space dimension. We also address how the response function might be sensitive to this change in dimensionality. We discuss how this phenomenon is observable in growth processes and near critical points for systems in equilibrium. In particular, we determine the fractal dimension $d_f$ for the Ising model and validate it via computer simulations for two dimensions.

Abstract:Inspired by the similarity between the fractal Weierstrass function and quantum systems with discrete scaling symmetry, we establish general conditions under which the dynamics of a quantum system will exhibit fractal structure in the time domain. As an example, we discuss the dynamics of the Loschmidt amplitude and the zero-momentum occupation of a single particle moving in a scale invariant 1/r^{2} potential. In order to show these conditions can be realized in ultracold atomic gases, we perform numerical simulations with practical experimental parameters, which shows that the dynamical fractal can be observed in realistic timescales. The predication can be directly verified in current cold atom experiments.

Abstract:Geographical phenomena of cities fall into two categories: one is simple systems which characteristic scales, and the other is complex systems without characteristic scale. The key of conventional mathematical modeling and quantitative analysis is to find characteristic length. The scale-free phenomena of cities cannot be effectively characterized by traditional mathematical methods. Thus the characteristic scale-based spatial analysis should be replace by scaling-based spatial analysis. Based on mathematical reasoning and empirical studies, this work is devoted to discussing scaling, fractals, spatial complexity of cities and the inherent relationships between these theories. The main points are as follows. First, scaling is one of basic properties of cities, and the essence of scaling in cities is invariance of contraction or dilation transform of urban models. Second, fractal pattern is the spatial order emerging from urban self-organized evolution. The essence of city fractals is scaling symmetry. Third, spatial complexity of cities is related to scaling and fractals. The ideas from scaling and fractals make new ways for understanding complex spatial systems. In conclusions, fractal geometry provides a powerful tool for scaling analysis, and can be used to explore spatial complexity and singularity of cities. Scaling and fractals can be integrated into a new theoretical framework of spatial complexity of cities.
Invariant Distributions of Partially Hyperbolic Systems: Fractal Graphs, Excessive Regularity, and Rigidity

Abstract:We introduce a novel approach linking fractal geometry to partially hyperbolic dynamics, revealing several new phenomena related to regularity jumps and rigidity. One key result demonstrates a sharp phase transition for partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms $f \in \mathrm{Diff}^\infty_{\mathrm{vol}}(\mathbb{T}^3)$ with a contracting center direction: $f$ is $C^\infty$-rigid if and only if both $E^s$ and $E^c$ exhibit Hölder exponents exceeding the expected threshold. Specifically, we prove: If the Hölder exponent of $E^s$ exceeds the expected value, then $E^s$ is $C^{1+}$ and $E^u \oplus E^s$ is jointly integrable. If the Hölder exponent of $E^c$ exceeds the expected value, then $W^c$ forms a $C^{1+}$ foliation. If $E^s$ (or $E^c$) does not exhibit excessive Hölder regularity, it must have a fractal graph. These and related results originate from a general non-fractal invariance principle: for a skew product $F$ over a partially hyperbolic system $f$, if $F$ expands fibers more weakly than $f$ along $W^u_f$ in the base, then for any $F$-invariant section, if $\Phi$ has no a fractal graph, then it is smooth along $W^u_f$ and holonomy-invariant. Motivated by these findings, we propose a new conjecture on the stable fractal or stable smooth behavior of invariant distributions in typical partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms.
