Abstract:This paper presents the results of wear and service life investigations of solid-lubricated rolling bearings. The cage of the bearing consists of a PI matrix with 15% MoS 2 and serves as a lubrication depot in addition to silver coated balls. First, investigations of the bearing system within the bearing service life are presented, and the torque curve, the wear mass and surface analyses are discussed. With regard to wear, it is shown which that the bearing rings tend to increase in mass over the life of the bearing and while the balls and the cage tend to decrease in mass. With respect to the elemental surface condition, the surfaces of the bearing rings and balls are examined with respect to the mass of the elements on them. Furthermore, service life investigations with different material pairings are presented, whereby the focus here is on the service life achieved, in addition to the torque curve, the wear development and the surface analysis. It could be shown, that MoS 2 in the cage results in a longer service life while an Ag coating of the balls has no positive effect on the service life and even seems so reduce it when combined with MoS 2 .

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper primarily explores the wear behavior of solid-lubricated rolling bearings during their service life and further demonstrates the impact of different solid lubricants and their interactions on bearing life. Specifically, the paper addresses the following key issues: 1. **Research Background and Objectives**: With the increasing demand for sustainable development and energy transition, reducing friction has become an important topic. Under certain conditions (such as extreme temperatures or high vacuum environments), traditional lubrication methods (e.g., grease or oil) are no longer applicable, making solid-lubricated rolling bearings particularly important. 2. **Experimental Design**: The paper employs a special bearing structure, including a cage made of PI (polyimide) matrix with 15% MoS2 (molybdenum disulfide), silver-coated steel balls, and other components, and conducts a series of tests under high temperature and high vacuum conditions. 3. **Results Analysis**: - During the bearing's service life, the performance of the bearing system is evaluated through torque curves, mass loss, and surface analysis. - The study found that the mass of the bearing rings increases with service life, while the mass of the balls and cage decreases. - The study of material surface conditions shows that the presence of MoS2 in the cage can extend the bearing's service life, while the silver-coated balls do not seem to have a positive effect on extending service life and may even reduce it when combined with MoS2. 4. **Life Testing**: Through life testing of bearings with different material combinations, the paper further verifies that cages filled with MoS2 can significantly improve bearing life, while the effect of silver-coated balls is not significant and sometimes even harmful. In summary, the main purpose of this paper is to understand the wear behavior and service life of solid-lubricated rolling bearings under different configurations and to determine which factors can effectively extend the service life of such bearings. In particular, the paper emphasizes the effectiveness of MoS2 as a solid lubricant and its role in extending bearing life in specific configurations.
