A Study on the Derivations of Viewpoint Aspects in Mandarin Chinese

Abstract:This paper aims to study viewpoint aspects in Mandarin Chinese,normally regarded as aspects by Chinese linguists.Viewpoint aspects are the manifestations of the speakers' perspectives on the different parts of the internal intervals of the events.The hyponymies of Chinese viewpoint aspects are imperfective,progressive,perfective,and perfect,mainly expressed by such aspect markers aszhe,zheng,zhengzai,zai,le,guo,laizhe,lai,andlaile.The paper extracted the constellations of Chinese ″viewpoint aspect marker + verb″,″temporal adverbial + viewpoint aspect marker + verb″ and their English correspondents from a large scale self-built Chinese-English viewpoint aspect parallel corpus.The analysis of these extracted Chinese and English viewpoint aspect parallel sentences with the above constellations reveals that the viewpoint aspects in Mandarin have derivative phenomena.For instance,the progressive markers zai +verbs in the extracted sentences are not always progressive aspects.With some temporal adverbials in the sentences,the progressive aspects often shift to imperfective,perfect or perfect progressive.As regards this phenomenon,the paper advances the following general Chinese viewpoint derivative principle: In a clash between the vocabulary meanings of the temporal adverbials and the grammatical meanings of the basic constellations ″aspect marker + verb″,the vocabulary meanings of temporal adverbials override.This clash renders the viewpoint aspects to shift to other types of viewpoint aspects.The impact of the temporal adverbials on the Chinese basic viewpoint aspects is analyzed from the following two aspects:(1) It is approved by the self-extracted Chinese-English examples that the temporal adverbials used with the constellation of ″aspect marker + verb″ can restrict the durations and specific temporal locations of the actions.In short,this is a type of sentential,linear,hierarchical,and semantic impact inward from vocabulary meanings to the grammatical meanings,from grammatical meanings to the vocabulary meanings,rendering the derivative phenomena.(2) The inconsistencies between the durations expressed by the temporal adverbials and the basic viewpoint aspects can alter the focus width of the basic viewpoint aspects on the situation types.It is believed that the proposal of the Chinese viewpoint derivative principle may have some implications for the study of Chinese-English machine translation.
